In 1998 a SoaPOPera for Laptops by G.H. Hovagimyan & Peter Sinclair won a prize in the computer music category at Ars Electronica. I’m pleased to announce that the installation format of the work A SoaPOPera for iMacs will be in the summer exhibition titled Burlesque at the Jeu de Paume in Paris, France. The exhibition runs from June 6th to September 15th. It’s a rather interesting exhibition curated by Cristophe Kihm on the influence of burlesque on contemporary art practice.

Long Island City, NY—Stories of new immigrants and refugees come to life in a performance by Judith Sloan and Warren Lehrer. The performance, based on their award-winning book and cross media project, Crossing the BLVD: strangers, neighbors, aliens in a new America will be held at LaGuardia Community College on May 23. The event will be held in the college’s Little Theatre at 47th Avenue and Van Dam Street in Long Island City at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free with student I.D. and $10 for general public. 718-482-5151.
For three years, photographer, writer, book artist Warren Lehrer and oral historian and actress/audio artist Judith Sloan traveled the world by trekking the streets of their home borough of Queens, NY-the most ethnically diverse locality in the United States. The Crossing the BLVD project documents the people and stories they encountered along their journey. In the performance, Lehrer is our tour guide, providing wry commentary on the follies of Queens living and U.S. immigration policy, while Sloan “channels” a variety of interviewees. Judith Sloan is a mesmerizing performer, whose vocalization work and movement bring these characters to life. Their performance is illuminated by Lehrer’s photographic images of the Crossing the BLVD subjects, objects they have carried with them from home to home, landscapes and maps, along with Sloan’s engaging soundtrack of original music, sounds and voices.
At the end of the production, five LaGuardia students will read their own narratives directed by Judith Sloan.

CARNEGIE ART CENTER presents EVERYTHING: An Evening with Ron Ehmke and His or Her Very Special Guests Saturday, May 21, 8 p.m.
The Carnegie Art Center will present a free live performance by writer/performer/media artist Ron Ehmke on Saturday, May 21 at 8 p.m. as part of the multi-site Beyond/In Western New York series of projects by artists from throughout the region. Ron Ehmke does a little of everything: spoken-word performances, large-scale ensemble theater, autobiographical storytelling, political satire, improvisational cabaret, cable access television, arts programming, DJ-ing, you name it. He has been creating live art throughout the U.S. for the last 25 years, both alone and frequently in collaboration with actors, visual and media artists, dancers, and others. EVERYTHING: AN EVENING WITH RON EHMKE AND HIS OR HER VERY SPECIAL GUESTS is his first new evening-long solo project since 1998. The show is structured like a touring rock concert, from a merchandise table in the lobby (offering t-shirts, DVDs, and even action figures of characters from the show) to a set list which changes from venue to venue and night to night. (Three different versions of EVERYTHING also appeared at the Burchfield-Penney Arts Center in April, and another will be presented at Soundlab on June 11.) The content is drawn from every phase of Ehmke¹s career, which includes monologues, stories, rants, videotapes, character sketches, audio pieces, and brand-new material.
Each production includes one or more hand-picked guest artists and spur-of-the-moment surprises. Joining Ehmke at the Carnegie show will be singer/songwriter Tom Stahl, one of the most respected performers in Buffalo¹s thriving acoustic music scene, and Jack Papier, a founding member of the Real Dream Cabaret. The show is co-directed by Catherine Young and Taunee Grant, and features a site-specific environmental set (which also changes radically from venue to venue) designed by David Butler. Internationally acclaimed artist Robert Longo will discuss his work, which though increasingly introspective, reflects the appropriation of images from existing photographic sources and the mood of emotional conflict and violence for which he is best known.

Robert Longo, who became synonymous with pictorial art in the 1980s, will discuss his unique large-scale works, his influences, and the inspiration for his images as part of AFA’s lecture series, ArtTalks. ArtTalks will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at 6:30 p.m. at the AFA, located at 41 East 65th Street, New York. Born in Brooklyn in 1953, Robert Longo obtained his BFA from the State University of New York, Buffalo, in 1975. During his studies there, he co-founded Hallwalls, a studio and exhibition space for contemporary art, with Cindy Sherman. After graduation, Longo moved to New York because he was invited to participate in the seminal 1977 Artists Space show, Pictures. In New York, he continued to experiment with sculptural, pictorial, and performance work that would become the foundation for his ongoing interest in utilizing the multi-disciplinary potential of art. Blending techniques from the worlds of photography, video, painting, and drawing, Longo’s work seemed to mirror the media-infused climate of the United States in the Reagan era. In 1980, he had his first one-person exhibition, in Europe at Studio d’Arte Cannaviello in Milan. The following year, his first New York solo show, Men in the Cities, at Metro Pictures, brought him international critical acclaim.
For the past two decades, Longo has continued to produce works in monumental scale that touch on social, political, and economic issues. Regardless of the medium, he consistently explores the importance of images in our society and investigates the individual’s relationship to these images. In addition to painting and drawing, his work has included theatre projects (for the Salzburg Festival), performances (collaborations with Bill T. Jones and Eric Bogosian), sculpture, photography, feature films (he directed 1995’s Johnny Mnemonic), and music videos (he directed videos for R.E.M. and New Order).
In 1989, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art mounted a major retrospective of Longo’s work. He has also had solo exhibitions at Museum Haus Lange and Haus Esters, Krefeld, Germany; the Brooklyn Museum; the Albertina, Vienna; Galeria Soledad Lorenzo, Madrid; Gallery Hans Mayer in Dusseldorf; and Galerie Piece Unique, Paris. His work is in numerous private and public collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Tate Gallery, London; the Art Institute of Chicago; and the Broad Foundation, Los Angeles. Most recently, Longo was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial. He is also the 2005 recipient of the Goslar Kaiser Ring, one of the most prestigious awards in modern art.

Using Glyndor Gallery and the grounds, Meteorologic Phenomena explores a variety of artistic responses to the weather, that elemental force that shapes all human relationships to nature. Atmospheric conditions influence ecological and biological progress as well cultural and technological development. The artists consider the weather as a psychological condition, source of scientific information, and aesthetic inspiration.

Conceptual artist Marcus Young will perform ” Pacific Avenue” on WangFuJing, Beijing’s busiest commerical street, May 17-20. The work is simple–slow walking and gentle smiling in public. The pedestrian walkway that typically takes seven minutes to walk Marcus will walk with micro-steps in three hours. Inspired by the behavior of The Umbrella Man, a resident and street personality of Santa Cruz, California, this work will re-interpret his behavior as public art. ” Pacific Avenue” premieres in Beijing and will then show in Minneapolis and other cities in the U.S. The showing in Beijing is part of the 3 rd DaDao Live Arts Festival and will run through May 20. Costume is by Feng Ling.
