Performances With Electroacoustic Clothes:The Electronic Guy.
Demonstration solo from Benoit Maubrey with electroacoustic tuxedo, guitar, and white noise radio. After the performance Mr. Maubrey will give a video presentation concerning his Audio Gruppe . Mr. Maubrey’s workshop at FluxFactory is the first step towards a larger cooperative event between the Audio Gruppe and local NYC performers and dancers that is planned in NYC in September 2006.
Background:
Benoît Maubrey is the director of DIE AUDIO GRUPPE a Berlin-based art group that build and perform with electronic clothes (past examples: AUDIO BALLERINAS, AUDIO STEELWORKERS, BONG BOYS, VIDEO PEACOCKS…).Basically these are electro-acoustic clothes and dresses (equipped with amplifiers and loudspeakers) that make sounds by interacting with their environment. For example the AUDIO BALLERINAS use — among other electronic instruments– light sensors that enable them to produce sounds through the interaction of their movements and the surrounding light (PEEPER choreography). Via movement sensors they can also trigger electronic sounds that are subsequently choreographed –or “orchestrated”—into musical compositions as an “audio ballet ” (YAMAHA choreography). A variety of other electronic instruments (mini-computers, samplers, contact microphones, cassette and CD players, and radio receivers) allow them to work with the sounds, surfaces, and topographies of the space around them in a variety of solo or group choreographies. Die Audio Gruppe‘s work is essentially site-specific. Often the electronics is adapted into entirely new “Audio Uniforms” or “sonic costumes” that reflect local customs , themes, or traditions (AUDIO GEISHA/Japan, AUDIO CYCLISTS/France, AUDIO HANBOK/Korea).
The future event is called SOUND JUNCTIONS :it consists of a sound event for 20-30 electro-acoustic costumes and would take place in the rooms and spaces of a large building and the neighborhood area surrounding it. The project would involve a collaboration between the Audio Gruppe and local artists, performers and organizations (for example media artists, dancers, performers, musicians, singers, students, handicapped people, break dancers, retired persons, electronic techniciens and lighting designers). Mr. Maubrey and the Audio Gruppe would bring 30 electro-acoustic costumes and work for approximately 2 weeks via a series of workshops with local groups. This promises to be an exciting night of intergenerational eclecticism. A rare and unusual songbird, McMahon (8 PM) will be backed by the renowned pedal steel guitar virtuoso ‘Fooch’ Fischetti. He will be followed by two very exciting young bands. Frankie and His Fingers (9 PM) is “loud, fast, original pop music” with the most refreshingly intense and classic stage presence (amazing girl drummer). Baba Yaga (10 PM) is an indie soaked noise pop quartet that is a wonder to behold, so self-contained and yet introspective. Both of these bands have a polite following of spasmodic dancing kids that must be seen and experienced by anyone who has lost hope in the future of madkind.

The Psychasthenia Society is back in an extended run at Collective:Unconscious, with performances on the first Friday of every month. Good Enough to Eat is a cooking presentation during which edible as well as inedible ingredients are used to produce a dish that includes the performer’s body. Toes, thighs, neck and buttocks are carefully prepared into an elaborate recipe of an onanistic nature that serves 1.

EarSay artists Judith Sloan and Warren Lehrer present Crossing the BLVD: strangers, neighbors, aliens in a new America, a performance and discussion based on their acclaimed book. Following the performance, BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange Executive Director Marya Warshaw will discuss some of the issues revealed in the book with select individuals who are portrayed along with the authors. Crossing the BLVD depicts the struggles, humor and pathos of new immigrants and refugees in the most polyglot locality in the U.S. At a time when immigration patterns are re-shaping American culture, this award winning multimedia performance sheds light on the experiences of people who came to the United States after the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act Amendment mandated an end to immigration policies that favored white Western Europeans. For three years, photographer, writer, book artist Warren Lehrer and oral historian, actress/audio artist Judith Sloan traveled the world by trekking the streets of their home borough of Queens, NY-the most ethnically diverse locality in the United States. The Crossing the BLVD project documents the people and stories they encountered along their journey. In the performance, Lehrer is our tour guide, providing wry commentary on the follies of Queens living and U.S. immigration policy, while Sloan “channels” a variety of interviewees. Judith Sloan is a mesmerizing performer, whose vocalization work and movement bring these characters to life. Their performance is illuminated by projected images of the subjects, objects they have carried with them from home to home, landscapes and maps, along with Sloan’s engaging soundtrack of original music, sounds and voices.
Crossing the BLVD is a project of EarSay, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to uncovering and portraying stories of the uncelebrated.

From a gay teen’s head-on collision with life in a sleazy hotel across the street from the Hollywood Bowl to an ecstatic vision of a sex-positive future on a mattress in a police holding cell, the show is a kinky and funny journey thru the beds and hotels and life on the road as a traveling salesman- oops I mean a performance artist! I was doing the math recently and I figured that if I continue to tour as a performer for another twenty years, I will end up sleeping in at least 1000 hotel beds in my lifetime on the road. For maximum poetic oomph, let’s say 1001 beds! Yikes!

For Art’s Sake Book Launching Party on Friday, March 17 th
(NYC—February 18, 2006) The Center for Book Arts is pleased to present For Art’s Sake, a limited edition devotional guide created at the Center, conceived by Nicolás Dumit Estévez and produced in collaboration with artists Amber McMillan and Ana Cordeiro. We will be hosting a book launch on Friday, March 17 at 6:30pm to celebrate the publication. The For Art’s Sake devotional guide is a collection of letterpress printed instructions and advice for potential pilgrims, hand bound in red velvet, which includes a passport for the reader to use on their own pilgrimages.
The devotional guide is a component of Estévez’s larger two-year series of performances For Art’s Sake. Estévez has staged a series of torturous pilgrimages in which religious practice becomes a tool for art, basing his work on the Catholic pilgrimage to El Camino de Compostela in Spain. Estévez has strapped art publications to his back and walked to East Harlem, walked backwards from lower Manhattan to the Bronx over two days, traveled to the Studio Museum in Harlem wearing an iron crown embellished with admission buttons from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and proselytized at educational and cultural sites on his way to the Jersey City Museum. Each journey begins at the LMCC or Franklin Furnace and ends at a major cultural institution, at which point Estévez present his passport to be signed by the director of the institution to signify completion of the penance. For Art’s Sake has been conceived as a part of the LMCC/Workspace: 120 Broadway Residency Program and the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art. The For Art’s Sake devotional guide serves as a tool for readers to create their own series of pilgrimages in Estévez’s footsteps.
Our book launch party on Friday, March 17 is part of an evening of performance, including artist Pablo Helguera, presented in conjunction with our current exhibition The Only Book, organized by Sara Reisman, guest curator. There is a suggested donation at the door of $10/ $5 for CBA members. To get to the Center by train, take the N, R to 28th Street and Broadway; the F to 23 rd Street and 6th Avenue; or the 1 or 9 to 28 th Street and 7th Avenue. Heather Woodbury is the author of the renowned What Ever (Farrar Straus Giroux), which began as a ten hour theater phenomenon and was adapted as a radio play hosted by Ira Glass of This American Life. A legendary performer, Woodbury’s serial-dramas were a highlight of the East Village club scene of the 1980s.Tale, which won a Kennedy Award for playwrighting, will premiere next Fall in New York at PS 122.
Using her trademark meta-mix of voices, David Cote of Time Out NY writes, “Woodbury employs characters and locales on both coasts to chart the psychic devastation the Dodger’s desertion wrought upon Brooklyn fans, while also relating the fate of LA’s Chavez Ravine, where a whole community of Mexican Americans were forced to sell their homes to make room for the Dodger’s Stadium.Toggling between 1957 and the present, Tale swoops through cities and drops into the minds of a mini-series worth of major and minor characters.” From the rise of Senator McCarthy to the fall of the twin Towers, 2Cities channels a lost universe of lives otherwise erased, in a style that owes as much to DJ Shadow as John Steinbeck.
