BEFORE AUTUMN LEAVES ~ FROM JOHN
JOHN KELLY PERFORMANCE’S AUTUMN 2024 UPDATE
Dear Friends,
I just completed a week long workshop at Mercury Store Residency (https://www.mercurystore.com/) for a new chamber opera by the Swedish composer Mikael Karlsson (https://mikaelk.com/) . Barcelona, Map of Shadows (https://www.maboumines.org/production/barcelona-map-of-shadows/) is based on the play by Lluisa Cunille, with Libretto and Direction by Mallory Catlett. During this initial workshop as a vocalist I did some serious improvisation with esteemed soprano (and friend) Lauren Flanigan. The production will ultimately happen early in 2026 at Skirball Center for the Performing Arts (https://nyuskirball.org/) , produced by Mabou Mines (https://www.maboumines.org/) and American Opera Projects (https://www.aopopera.org/) .
On the occasion of what would have been his 70th birthday, the David Wojnarowicz Foundation in collaboration with the New York City AIDS Memorial (https://www.nycaidsmemorial.org/projects-library/david-wojnarowicz-70-years) , Visual AIDS, and P·P·O·W presented a series readings of Wojnarowicz’s seminal monologues, The Waterfront Journals, a collection of autobiographical fiction inspired by the many people he encountered in his early twenties.
After the readings, the band RIMBAUD HATTIE—comprised of Wojnarowicz’s former 3 Teens Kill 4 bandmates Doug Bressler and Julie Hair, along with John Kelly performed a set of original songs. The Memorial also unveiled a park bench dedicated to Wojnarowicz to memorialize his championing of the fight against HIV/AIDS. Following the performances, a procession moved from the AIDS Memorial to Hudson River Park, depositing his ashes in the river, and symbolically honoring David’s life and spirit in communal recognition and celebration.
I was a guest speaker at The Stella Adler Center for the Arts (https://stellaadler.com/) , invited by Joanne Edelmann, the Poetry Series Curator and Master Teacher/Movement. We go way back to my early dancing days, and even though my training has been in dance and visual art, and not theatre, she was wonderfully encouraging in my capacity to share my experiences in performance with her acting students. The great thing about this Center is that the training is expansive and includes: Theater. Music. Dance. Art. Poetry. Training.
Recently, BIAC’s Intergenerational Pride Panel and Gallery Walk brought together the amazing Brooklyn Interns for Arts and Culture ( (https://www.bam.org/education/2023/biac) BIAC) program participants and LGBTQ+ ARTIST ARCHIVE PROJECT (https://www.lgbtqartistsarchive.org/) artists and activists at BAM Strong’s Rudin Gallery. Moderated by Ma’a Feaster and Desmond Loo, the panel featured iconic performance artists John Kelly and Carmelita Tropicana, sharing their journeys from the 1980s to today, inspiring our young participants to add their voices to the legacy of queer art in NYC. Since 2021, the BIAC program empowers young people to produce their own artistic events, celebrating creativity and cultural engagement.
I am currently a Resident Artist in the Painting Space 122 Program, renting a studio for a year through next July. It is located in the iconic Performance Space New York (formerly Performance Space 122) old school house building in the East Village on the corner of 9th Street and 1st Avenue. I’m in the process of (finalmente!) completing my Graphic Memoir A Friend Gave Me A Book, with its 360 completely hand rendered panels/pages. INSANE. I plan to have a series of open studio visits, to share the work as I search for a Publisher (or Literary Agent), and Gallery or other possible exhibition venue. Wish me luck. and if you have any ideas or leads (or would like a personal studio visit!) please feel welcome to reach out to me at performancekelly@gmail.com
Wshing you a peaceful Autumn ~
~ John

Part performance, part participatory experience and part action, Let Her In is a collaborative movement by choreographer Priscilla Marrero, sculptor Ferran Martín, and Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful Espejo Ovalles Morel that recognizes the need to build more bridges in our divisive political climate. This triad of creatives structures their improvisation at different parts of the Bronx River, grounding their walk along the banks of this flowing being. Ferran brings in some of his mirrored-cubes titled Mirror, Mirror, with which he has worked with in the past, and that offer the possibility of concealing our identities, while reflecting back the landscape that surrounds us. Let Her In invites those in attendance into the realms of play, relaxation, daydreaming, and love for the only fresh water river in the City of New York. At least two drops in every glass of the water we drink in our metropolis comes from the Bronx River.
Let Her In is an action that is part of Bodies of Water / Fluid Improvisations Along the Bronx River, a program conceived and produced by Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful, with individual actions co-created with Arantxa Araujo, Andrés Senra, Luis A., and Priscilla Marrero & Ferran Martín.
The series of actions is dedicated to the late Nancy Wallace. “She…[Nancy]…helped transform a watery graveyard for automobiles, tires and appliances into an urban greenbelt for New York City and Westchester County” The New York Times
About Bodies of Water/Fluid Improvisations Along the Bronx River points to the connections between bodies, as in human and non-human ones–such as Rivers–, as well as to concepts of interbeing, interconnectedness, and interdependence with all beings. Similarly, it brings to light ecological and social justice issues regarding colonial histories, environmental racism, and extractive capitalism while issuing a call for individual and collective stewardship and care for all bodies of Water. During four gatherings in different points along the Bronx River, improvisations centered on flow, water, compassion and deep listening are meant to unfold for invited participants, or perhaps unsuspecting audiences and wanderers attracted by a sight inspiring wonder and contemplation.
Bodies of Water/Fluid Improvisations Along the Bronx River / Background:
The Bronx River has been a constant presence for Nicolás since he moved from the Dominican Republic to New York City in 1991. His first job was in the Fordham Road section with the Bronx River Restoration Project and it entailed engaging the aquatic subject through art classes. In 2011 he was baptized by Bill Aguado and Susan Newmark in Drew Gardens. The sacramental was water from the Bronx River and the intention was that of a rite of passage into Bronxhood. Three decades after his first connection with the Bronx, and in a rapidly gentrifying borough, Nicolás is proposing to approach the Bronx River from the perspective of elderhood and aging.
Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful was awarded a New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Support for Artists Grant (Bronx, NY) to support his creative work. Sponsored by The Action Lab, this award is funding Bodies of Water/Fluid Improvisations Along the Bronx River. Through New York State’s continued investment in arts and culture, NYSCA has awarded over $80 million since Spring 2023 to over 1,500 artists and organizations across the state.
Bodies of Water/Fluid Improvisations Along the Bronx River Ó 2022 Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful / with copyrights for individual actions equally shared with each collaborator.
Ferran Martín is an interdisciplinary artist originally from Valencia, Spain. He is recognized for his work as an experimental sculptor with a focus in the public realm and performance. His work has been exhibited at Greene Naftali (NY), Daniel Silverstein (NY), Newman & Popiasvhilli Gallery (NY), Farside (Miami), Dorsky Gallery (NY), Roger Smith Gallery (NY), Greenberg Van Doren Gallery (NY), Sala de Arte Publico Siqueiros (Mexico City), Arte Veintiuno (Madrid), The Empty Circle (NY), Proyectos Raúl Zamudio (NY), Ethan Cohen Gallery (NY) amongst others. His work has been presented in St. Moritz Art Masters Festival 2011, Yeosu Art Festival (Korea) 2010, Beijing Biennale 2009 and the Bronx Museum of Art’s AIM program (NY).
Priscilla Marrero (ella/she) is an experimental performing + teaching artista and a first-generation Cubana-Americana. She is a passionate storyteller and loves to discover new ways to collaborate with transdisciplinary artistas through live performance, filmmaking, or educational gatherings. She has presented her collaborations in the Musée Dapper, The Empty Circle, BAAD!, Miami Light Project, Inkub8, Movement Research at Judson Memorial Church, Van Cortlandt Park, The Interior Beauty Salón, Inwood Hill Park y más. She graduated from Florida International University with a BA in Performance and Choreography (2009) and MFA in Experimental Choreography from the University of California Riverside (2022) for her research practice on La Pelvis.
Since 2011, Martín and Marrero have been creating works that range in mediums of film and live performance. They have collaborated in their research interests of bringing conceptual and experimental art to low-income, and marginalized communities. Together, they bridge the conversation between performance art and the dance theater worlds. Their work together brings awareness to spaces that perhaps are challenging to speak about and discover ways to bring humor, charm, and characters that will invite others to participate in the conversation.
Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful Espejo Ovalles Morel treads an elusive path that manifests itself performatively through creative experiences that he helps unfold within the quotidian. He has exhibited or performed at Madrid Abierto/ARCO, The IX Havana Biennial, PERFORMA 05/07/21, IDENSITAT, Prague Quadrennial, Pontevedra Biennial, Queens Museum, MoMA, Printed Matter, P.S. 122, Sculpture Center, Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance BAAD!, Hemispheric Institute of Performance Art and Politics, City as Living Lab, Princeton University, Anthology Film Archives, El Museo del Barrio, Center for Book Arts, Longwood Art Gallery/BCA, The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Franklin Furnace, and Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. Nicolás has received mentorship in art in everyday life from Linda Mary Montano, a historic figure in the performance art field. Nicolás holds an MFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, where he studied with Coco Fusco; and an MA from Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. He recently served as a Senior Lecturer and Social Practice Artist in Residence in the Art and Art History Department at The University of Texas, Austin; and was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow in Washington DC. He is the founding director of The Interior Beauty Salon, an organism living at the intersection of creativity and healing. Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, Nicolás was baptized as a Bronxite in 2011.

Frank Gillette: The Symbiotic Blues
7910 Ivanhoe Avenue
La Jolla, CA 92037
October 24 – December 5, 2024
Opening Reception
October 24, 2024, 6-8 p.m.
“to hold, as’ twere, the mirror up to nature, to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure.” – William Shakespeare, Hamlet
LOS/NR is proud to present a major multi-screen video work by the pioneering American video and installation artist Frank Gillette (b. 1941, Jersey City, NY). Interested in the empirical observation of natural phenomena, his early work integrated the viewer’s image with prerecorded information. He has been described as a pioneer in video research with an almost scientific attention for taxonomies and descriptions of ecological systems and environments. Gillette’s seminal work Wipe Cycle (co-produced with Ira Schneider in 1968) is considered as one of the first video installations in art history. Gillette is the recipient of fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Guggenheim Foundation, as well as grants from the New York State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Symbiotic Blues is the world premier of a 9-channel video study of woodland and beach of eastern Long Island. It consists of three video triptychs (Riverrun, Spearlight, and Blackseer) exploring the ways in which we experience the natural world. In nine endless loops, Gillette returns to a subject he has been drawn to for over fifty years; the relationship between the natural world and the ways in which we experience it over time. He achieves this through a complex engagement with classic genres: still-life, landscape, and symbolic abstraction combined with soundtracks mixing natural and electronic sounds. Though the artist was among the first to use television as an artistic medium, his video work has remained rooted in an approach stemming from his early training as an abstract painter. In the artist’s words, “…each triptych combines aesthetic judgment with the forces which shape nature’s boundaries.”
This exhibition is organized by David A. Ross, the former Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In 1972, Ross was appointed as the world’s first curator of Video Art at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY. His first exhibition of Frank Gillette’s work occurred in 1973. An illustrated brochure with an essay by the noted philosopher, naturalist and musician Dr. David Rothenberg will be available for the show.
There will be an opening reception with free flowers and ice creams (while supplies last) on Thursday, October 24, 6-8 pm. Be advised, timed entry might be required during the event.

October 25, 2024 – February 16, 2025
Sean Kelly is delighted to announce the opening of Marina Abramović’s first major retrospective in Switzerland at the Kunsthaus Zürich. In a career that spans over fifty-five years, Abramović has propelled performance art from its experimental beginnings to cementing its place in art history. This comprehensive survey offers insight into Abramović’s multifaceted oeuvre ranging from performance, video, and photography to sculpture, installations, and works on paper.
Abramović’s trademark is her long-durational performances in which the artist pushes the limits of her body and mind. In her early works, Abramović tested the boundaries of her physical endurance, while more recently, she has focused on mental transformation, themes of healing, and a new participatory experience for visitors explored through her Transitory Objects.
In this exhibition, an installation of Abramović’s historical works Imponderabilia, 1977 and Luminosity, 1997 will be restaged by trained performers. Abramović will involve the public directly in the interactive piece Counting the Rice, 2024 and a new work, Decompression Chamber, 2024 created specially for the Kunsthaus Zürich. In her new conceptual piece, Abramović encourages the audience to pause for a moment and decompress – to relax and enter a different state of feeling or being, and thus discover and perceive both themselves and the world in new ways.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue in English and German, which sheds light on the background of Marina Abramović’s work. Abramović has also created a special limited edition photograph for the Kunsthaus Zürich which has been produced in association with the Swiss newspaper, Neue Zürcher Zeitung.
