The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is pleased to announce a new site-specific installation by 2008 Artist-in-Residence Adam Pendleton. Adam Pendleton is a returning Artist-in-Residence to the Gardner Museum. Pendleton is known for work animated by what he calls “Black Dada,” a critical articulation of blackness, abstraction, and the avant-garde. As described in his own words, he uses “radical juxtapositions, to disrupt established history and open up new potential associations.” Drawing from an archive of language and images, Pendleton makes “conceptually rigorous and formally inventive paintings, collages, videos, and installations that insert his work into broader conversations about history and contemporary culture.” https://www.gardnermuseum.org/experience/contemporary-art/artists/pendleton-adam
Pendleton has transformed the Fenway Gallery into an immersive, room-sized installation where three primary shapes—square, triangle, and circle—act as refrains, creating and framing abstract space. These spaces exist as “neutral” black areas in dialogue with the language and images collected in the artist’s works on Mylar and in System of Display, a series of sculptural glass-and-mirror works. These works refuse straightforward interpretation, gently probing the history of visual display and the shifting status of foreground versus background.

Adam Pendleton is a New York-based artist known for work animated by what the artist calls “Black Dada,” a critical articulation of blackness, abstraction, and the avant-garde. Drawing from an archive of language and images, Pendleton makes conceptually rigorous and formally inventive paintings, collages, videos, and installations that insert his work into broader conversations about history and contemporary culture.
In 2013 Pendleton was the second artist invited to create a work for the Gardner’s public art space on the façade of the New Wing. Untitled: (Fang Man from the Upper Ivindo Area, Northern Gabon, 1905-6/Furnishing Fabric, French or Italian, 1725-50 featured an early 20th-century photographic portrait of an African man set against an 18th-century European silk damask from the Gardner’s collection.
Pendleton’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, notably at the Walker Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Studio Museum, New York; the Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; and the Tate Liverpool. This week, we are launching Soho Rep. Project Number One.

Through this new program, eight artists are becoming salaried staff members at Soho Rep for the 2020/21 season: Becca Blackwell! Shayok Misha Chowdhury! Stacey Derosier! David Mendizábal! Ife Olujobi! David Ryan Smith! Carmelita Tropicana! Jillian Walker!
It should not be a wild experiment to recognize the enormous benefit that artists offer society but given the dire lack of government support for arts workers during this pandemic, it is.
Over the last six months, a global health crisis and urgent calls for racial justice have exposed the intense unsustainability and inequities in our field. Moving forward with this amazing cohort, we will meet regularly together to reimagine what comes next for theater-making. Each artist will also create something to be shared with you throughout the season. Artists will receive a salary equivalent to the average staff salary at Soho Rep.: $1,250 per week plus health insurance.
Each of these artists has a singular theatrical vision, has an interest in interrogating the relationship between artists and institutions, integrates their values deeply into their creative practice, and shows a generosity of spirit toward the work of other theater makers. They are also intergenerational and represent a range of disciplines—theatrical design, directing, acting, publishing, and playwriting.
As we live through this rupture together, we aspire to serve our mission more rigorously, ambitiously and experimentally than ever before. If our role is to provide meaningful opportunities to radical theater makers at critical junctures in their practice, then there has never been a better moment to more urgently increase our direct support of artists. We’ve also long been artist-led, and we’re excited to further center that distinctive aspect of our work and radically grow the number of artists in formal roles at the Soho Rep. for the coming year.
Of course, we are also eager to begin producing in our theater again as soon as conditions allow, and are thrilled to tell you about the brilliant slate of work coming up: Hansol Jung’s Wolf Play, directed by Dustin Wills, produced in association with Ma-Yi Theater Company; while you were partying, by Peter Mills Weiss and Julia Mounsey with Brian Fiddyment; Omar Vélez Meléndez’s Notes on Killing Seven Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Board Members directed by David Mendizábal; Kate Tarker’s Montag, directed by Dustin Wills; and Jillian Walker’s Untitled Work(ing) for Whitney, directed by Jenny Koons.
All of this great work will continue to be developed virtually and in-person through our Studio Program and will run alongside our Writer/ Director Lab, co-chaired by William Burke and Jackie Sibblies Drury.

What impact do gender constructs have on artists and art history? Is there greater gender equity in today’s art world?
New York–based artist Maria Yoon and curator Sooa McCormick explore the pressing issue of gender inequality, past and present, through their shared experience as Korean women and discuss how notions of gender play a role in their artistic and curatorial practices. Yoon’s documentary, Maria the Korean Bride (2013), uncovers the different ways communities across the United States view the institution of marriage. McCormick’s current exhibition, Gold Needles: Embroidery Arts from Korea, frames Korean embroidery works as tools for promoting women’s own cultural identities.

Performance Art Latinoamérica, PALTA, presents Festival Intercontinental de Performance Art Virtual, OCCIDENTALMENTE to take place from October 10 to 12, 2020. Coinciding with the controversial date of the much questioned “discovery of America”, the program proposes a reflexion on the historical processes of actualization and revision of history considering post-colonial, decolonial, neo-indigenist, and emancipatory approaches that are present in today’s societies. On this day of the first presidential debate, am writing to invite you to Bound up Together: On the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, a new and timely group exhibition curated by Rachel Gugelberger at Smack Mellon in Dumbo.
I am very pleased to have two large-scale drawings in the exhibition and to be hosting A Remedy for a Constitutional Crisis, a multilingual reading of the United States Constitution by multiple performers.

In this two-part program, join exhibiting artist Maya Ciarrocchi for A Remedy for Constitutional Crisis, a participatory reexamination of the U.S. Constitution. On October 8th, the artist will lead an introductory prelude, in which visitors are invited to an intimate round-table gathering within the context of the exhibition to read from Pocket Constitutions provided by the artist, to discuss the laws and rights the Constitution outlines, and to write down their own personal amendments. On October 17, Ciarrocchi will organize a public performance reading of the U.S. Constitution. In anticipation of the 2020 presidential election, participants are invited to assemble outside Smack Mellon to read from the Constitution in various languages, hold long table discussions on the importance of a written constitution, and write amendments that imagine a more meaningful and accessible constitution.

Through improvisational watercolor I embrace humor, the unexpected, and the theatrical, figuratively inserting myself and you into a scenario and painting it from the perspective of an imaginary or real experience.
While the video, due to technical difficulties, contains some noticeable errors – it is certainly not perfect – I wanted to share it with you regardless. This way, it aligns with its core message that sometimes what might be imperfect can actually be exhilarating and a great thing.
The exploration is what matters!

I hope you take on the challenge and, if you feel so inspired, send Ruby (c/o GP..) your own perfectly imperfect video or photograph in which you attempt to create a watercolor storyboard of your story from your own home.
