a Solo Exhibition by m(artha) BurgessArtists Reception Friday, September 8th, 7-9pm (through Sept 19th)Trestle Gallery is pleased to announce Queer as a Clockwork PeachFish, a solo exhibition by m(artha) Holloway Burgess. Queer as a Clockwork PeachFish will feature an installation consisting of sculptural objects and two distinct editions of photographs. One edition is titled, Queer as a Clockwork Orange (portraits of notable GLBTIQ New Yorkers in handmade sets fashioned after drawings in Stanley Kubrick’s film A Clockwork Orange) and the other edition of photographs is titled, My Something (nudes). By creating a space in which to question and dislodge socially constructed mores, the artist embraces the fluidity of GLBTIQ culture. The installation provides a means for various considerations of the title to emerge.

The unshackling of material obligation in the course of biological degradation. The regeneration of desire. Making a mess, cleaning it up and starting all over again. Constructing a fantasy, tearing it apart and beginning again anew. MIX & REMIX until MAXXED. Viral replications and social relations. When life throws you lemons, make lemonAIDS…
DESCRIPTIVE BLURB
A multiple overlapping projection of super8, 16MM, video, slides and digital media as a live immersive interaction. A mashup moving image dance party mix that encases a time capsule circa 1995 while sampling from the present day with contemporary content and in-the-moment live feedback captures of image and dialogue. Footage includes images taken of fountains, churches and museums of Rome, Munich and Heidelberg, footage shot at Gay Pride and ACT UP marches, portraiture and landscape shots, and documentation and media elements from the maker’s performances. REMNANTS is a modular, evolving, morphing site specific work adapting to the conditions and requirements of the situation in which it is executed. Premiered for the Fringe Festival at Abrons Art Center, subsequent iterations include MIX NYC 1995 & 2014.

Sheffield Artist Showing at Museum in Germany
Sheffield, MA artist Mark Mendel is exhibiting new work at the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, Germany from May through October 2017. The ZKM features artwork created after 1960. The show Centerbeam at the ZKM (Center for Art and Media) celebrates the 40th anniversary of Centerbeam, a collaborative outdoor sculpture presented at the Dokumenta 6 in 1977.
From 1976 to 1982 Mendel was a Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT in Cambridge, MA, directed by the late German artist Otto Piene.
He was one of 20 artists, scientists and engineers who collaborated on the massive 144′ long temporary installation of kinetic performative and participatory sculpture. Mendel is in Karlsruhe to present his recent work at a symposium on September 2.

In Stand in the Stream, Stanya Kahn weaves together deeply personal and emphatically political imagery into a meditation on intimacy, alienation, and resistance. Both a work of mourning and a call to action, the film is also a documentary portrait of four generations of Kahn’s family: her grandmother, her mother, her son, and herself. MoMA PS1’s exhibition is the New York premiere and first museum presentation of this work.
Built from footage Kahn shot primarily over the past six years, Stand in the Stream records the artist in the act of both living and seeing, culminating in her activist mother’s decline into dementia and eventual death in 2015, and in events leading up to and surrounding the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. In a rhythmic flow of images, punctuated by irruptions of protest, solidarity, and violence, Kahn’s film charts the intersection between private and public life in today’s America.
The film’s title refers both to the stream of digital images and to Bertolt Brecht’s play, Man Equals Man, which deals with the ways in which human beings are instrumentalized in the manner of machines. As Kahn connects to random strangers in internet chatrooms while wearing Halloween monster masks, or voyeuristically records anonymous riders on the subway, she plays with distinctions between the intimacy of family and the estrangement of contemporary life.
The film’s sound design includes original compositions by Kahn and by musician/composer Alexia Riner. All footage is shot live or livestream screen-recorded in real time.

‘Wanderlust’ examines action, exploration outside the studio

“Wanderlust: Actions, Traces, Journeys 1967-2017,” a 50-year survey exhibition that considers the themes of action and exploration outside of the studio and how artists engage this theme in various ways, opens Sept. 7 at both locations of the UB Art Galleries. It will be on view through Dec. 31 and then travel to the Des Moines Art Center, where it will open on Feb. 18. Opening receptions at UB will take place from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 7 in the UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 9 in the UB Anderson Gallery, One Martha Jackson Place, off Englewood Avenue near the South Campus. One of the largest and most ambitious contemporary art exhibitions ever presented by the UB Art Galleries, “Wanderlust” questions and explores the complex nature of artists as voyagers – those who leave their studio to create work outside of the confines of four walls. It is a comprehensive survey of the artist’s need to roam and the work that emerges from this need.
‘Wanderlust’ exhibition examines action, exploration outside the studio… Now: News and views for UB faculty and staff. Artwork ranges from drawing, photography, sculpture, installations, film and video to performance and social practice taking place in both urban and rural landscapes, and include works that are narrative, political, performative, and conceptual examples of contemporary art. Each work recognizes the walk and the journey as much more than just a basic human act. Writer Rebecca Solnit – the exhibition takes its name from her book “Wanderlust: A History of Walking” – observes that walking replicates thinking, but adds that “the motions of the mind cannot be traced, but those of the feet can.” The exhibition encompasses a broad spectrum of artists working in this particular way, demonstrating that those who step outside of their studio have a shared sensibility, yet approach art-making in a variety of ways.
“‘Wanderlust’ showcases work by more than 40 artists, with underrecognized and emerging artists alongside pioneers in the field of contemporary art,” says Rachel
Adams, curator of “Wanderlust” and senior curator of exhibitions at the UB Art Galleries. “Beginning with Richard Long’s ‘A Line Made by Walking’ and Michelangelo Pistoletto’s ‘Walking Sculpture,’ this exhibition has work representing every decade from the last 50 years and includes artists from the Western New York region and the United States, as well as internationally, including Canada, Italy, Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, Palestine and Poland,” she says. “This exhibition will not only be a learning experience, but promote much-needed discourse for students and the greater Buffalo community.” Artists featured in “Wanderlust” include Vito Acconci, Bas Jan Ader, Nevin Aladag, Francis Alÿs, Janine Antoni, John Baldessari, Kim Beck, Roberley Bell, Blue Republic, Sophie Calle, Rosemarie Castoro, Cardiff/Miller, Millie Chen, Zoe Crosher, Fallen Fruit, David Hammons, Mona Hatoum, Nancy Holt, Kenneth Josephson, Allan Kaprow, William Lamson, Richard Long, Marie Lorenz, Mary Mattingly, Anthony McCall, Ana Mendieta, Teresa Murak, Wangechi Mutu, Efrat Natan, OHO, Gabriel Orozco, Carmen Papalia, John Pfahl, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Pope.L, Teri Reub, Michael x. Among the highlights of the exhibition are the previously mentioned “A Line Made by Walking,” Richard Long’s first walking work; Vito Acconci’s “Following Piece”; and 12 photographs from Ana Mendieta’s “Silhueta” series. The exhibition also features several new commissions. “The Grass is Always Greener” is a collaboration with art collective Fallen Fruit that began last May with “Endless Orchard,” the planting of more than 20 fruit trees in Buffalo’s Fruit Belt neighborhood, and will continue with the design and installation of fruit flags in the Anderson Gallery and possibly other sites in the community. Marie Lorenz’s “Gyre” is a series of found objects from her trip down the Erie Canal last summer that have been cast in porcelain. And “Still Visible, After Gezi” is Roberley Bell’s investigative artwork in which she scoured the streets of Istanbul in 2015 – after the Gezi Park protests of 2013 – trying to find trees she had originally photographed in 2005 and 2010.
Other commissions include a new skywriting performance [http://www.buffalo.edu/ubnow/stories/2017/07/galleries-skywriting.html] on Aug. 19 by Kim Beck and “Untitled (Infinity Mirror),” a two-channel video piece by William Lamson.
“Wanderlust” also will incorporate a variety of public programming, allowing visitors to leave the gallery and experience their own form of wanderlust. Todd Shalom will lead a newly commissioned walk through Buffalo’s West Side on Sept. 29, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1; UB media study professor Teri Rueb’s GPS-based sound walk will take place at Times Beach on Buffalo’s Outer Harbor beginning Sept. 9, with a free app ‘available for download; and Carmen Papalia, a visually impaired artist, will lead participants on a new iteration of his eyes-closed “Blind Field Shuttle” at 1 p.m. Sept. 9, starting at the UB Anderson Gallery.

“Wanderlust” is accompanied by a fully illustrated, 264-page catalogue with essays written by Adams and art historians Jane McFadden and Lori Waxman.
The exhibition and its publication are supported by a $30,000 Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and UB’s Techne Institute for Arts and Emerging Technologies. The UB Anderson Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday; the UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday.

Robert Longo Installation Will Come to Hunter College

Before he shares a billing with Francisco Goya at the Brooklyn Museum next month, Robert Longo will present a public work above Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.
Mr. Longo’s “American Bridge Project,” which consists of vinyl renderings of the original First Amendment document and the American flag, will go on view on the Hunter College sky bridges on Friday and remain until Dec. 1. Mr. Longo, whose art is often politically charged, hopes to provide a daily reminder of the importance of unity and free speech.
To create this site-specific work, which was curated by Jill Brienza, Mr. Longo enlarged portions of two of his charcoal drawings, often visiting 68th Street to examine the possibilities of scope and color.
“It was really difficult to figure out what would work from a distance,” Mr. Longo said in an interview. “It’s like these slivers of images; they slice the sky. And bridges are metaphorically something we need politically more than ever.”
The lower piece, on the third-floor bridge, is based on his 2017 work “Untitled (First Amendment, September 25, 1789),” in which he drew the First Amendment by hand in an effort to convey its very human origins.
“People address the Constitution as if it was the Bible,” Mr. Longo said. “I was quite touched when I actually looked at it and realized it was written by someone with penmanship, by hand.”
The seventh-floor installation is based on Mr. Longo’s 2012 charcoal drawing “Untitled (Berlin Flag).” Another one of Mr. Longo’s depictions of the American flag will go on display in September in at least eight venues around the country, as part of Creative Time’s “Pledges of Allegiance” project.
Mr. Longo said that he will also deliver a talk and visit student studios at Hunter this fall. The Brooklyn Museum exhibition, “Proof: Francisco Goya, Sergei Eisenstein, Robert Longo,” will open on Sept. 8.

The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is partnering with SUNY on a major travelling exhibition commemorating the work of NYFA and New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Fellows over the past 30 years.
The exhibition, titled Artists as Innovators: Celebrating Three Decades of New York State Council on the Arts/New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships, will show at seven SUNY museums between 2017 and 2020.
The Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art at SUNY New Paltz is first in line, with the exhibition debut and public opening reception scheduled for September 9, from 5 to 7pm, at the Dorsky. The exhibition will be on display in the museum’s Alice and Horace Chandler and North Galleries from August 30 to November 12.
“The Dorsky and its SUNY partners are thrilled to be participating in this collaboration with NYFA,” said Sara Pasti, the Neil C. Trager director of the Dorsky Museum, who also serves as chair of the SUNY Council of Museums and Galleries.
“We’re particularly honored to have the opportunity to open ‘Artists as Innovators’ here in New Paltz, as the exhibition provides a unique opportunity for our students and regional audiences to see work by extraordinary contemporary artists who have played an influential role in art history. This is likely to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Pasti said.
“Artists as Innovators” is a celebration of NYSCA and NYFA Fellowships, which over the last 30 years have supported more than 4,000 in a variety of disciplines, including not only the visual arts but also literature and performance.
Curated by Judith K. Brodsky and David C. Terry with the assistance of Madeline Scholl, the exhibition looks back over the years to feature works by more than 20 NYSCA/NYFA Fellows who have gone on to record significant achievements in their artistic careers.
Participating artists include: Elia Alba, Ida Applebroog, Dawoud Bey, Sanford Biggers, Ross Bleckner, Wendell Castle, Tara Donovan, Chitra Ganesh, The Guerrilla Girls, Christian Marclay, Marilyn Minter, Lori Nix, Tony Oursler, Faith Ringgold, Martha Rosler, Dread Scott, Andres Serrano, Shinique Smith, Carmelita Tropicana and Fred Wilson.
“The work in this exhibition shows how these influential artists interpret our times, questioning our values and prompting social awareness, but at the same time creating works of art that are innovative and full of visual power,” said co-curator and NYFA Board Chair Brodsky.

All of the above are words used to describe people and situations related to the individuals who come to live in, travel throughout, or escape from, a foreign country or condition. The noun we assign to each differing situation has a distinct connotation and stigma attached; we see manifestations of these differing connotations in legislation, in travel bans, in fetishized radical fantasies of revolution, and in the selection of words themselves (e.g. the use of ‘expat’ for people of European descent and ‘immigrant’ for people of color). Despite their situational differences, all peoples navigating immigrancy hold a powerful position, in that, as Christian Viveros-Fauné states in “Confessions of an American Refugee” on Affidavit, they are “invaluable and threatening to the new leaders in the U.S. Not only are immigrants among America’s most defenseless residents-making them the easiest to scapegoat-they also bear inconvenient witness by their very presence to a history of authoritarianism that complicates the power-hungry narratives of [our political] figures […]Artists must take a cue from America’s most vulnerable residents: its refugees. Before you get back to work at your studio or office, assume, like many of America’s most defenseless immigrants, that everything you treasure- home, family, well being your own hard-fought place in the world-can be taken away from you tomorrow.”

This year I will be selling mini comics and body science based images at the Small Press Expo in Bethesda Maryland (http://www.smallpressexpo.com). My debut comic for this event is called Stitchin’ Time!, a ridiculous historical fiction based on factual medical history. For the first time ever, the Roman encyclopedist Celsus (25 BCE-50 CE) and the Greek surgeon Galen (129-200 CE) team up to to stitch a disemboweled gladiator back together. Hilarity ensues! ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE at the ACADEMY
My summer has been spent researching the history of sutures and ligatures at the New York Academy of Medicine Library as their first-ever Artist In Residence. Since April I have been wrapping up in a wool sweater, reading (translated) books written by famous surgeons of history like Galen, Guy de Chauliac, and Ambrose Paré; researching flax production in Rome, silk production in France, and the history of catgut all over the world; making embroidery based on medical illustrations; and sketching out ideas for a graphic novel based on these histories. Abrons Art Center presents Maya Ciarrocchi’s A Remedy for a Constitutional Crisis.
A Remedy for a Constitutional Crisis is an eight-hour celebratory reading of the United States Constitution. This event is free to the public and will occur in the outdoor amphitheater at Abrons Art Center on September 17, 2017 (Constitution Day) from 12pm-8pm.
During this event, the U.S. Constitution will be read in multiple languages by multiple performers. In addition to the reading, there will be breakout groups for concepts discussions on topics such as, the separation of powers, Federalism and individual rights and as well as an area for participatory writing where attendees may copy portions of the U.S. Constitution or interpret it in their own words.
Artist Rosemary Taylor is creating banners which visually interpret specific amendments. These will hang from the balconies that surround the amphitheater. Food and drink will be available throughout the day for attendees and participants alike.

The three-part exhibition includes: Heroic Tapestries, Spoon to Shell sculptures, and a Protector sculpture. Heroic Tapestries represent different aspects of bravery during the time of the Holocaust: Jew and non-Jew, child and adult, World War II military fighter and ghetto/concentration camp smuggler, record keeper and saboteur. Together they represent the many types of female heroism, with war battle gear and without, during the years of the Holocaust. For her Spoon to Shell sculpture, the artist blended spoon and shell into an amalgam of materials, addressing sexual abuse. Protector includes a Wonder Woman shadow and becomes a symbol for the brave defender.

Figureworks is very pleased to open this fall season with a new series of Lutradur-based sculpture and paintings on plastic by Jacquelyn Schiffman.
For many years, Schiffman has worked with Lutradur, a strong, lightweight polyester-based fabric that accepts paints and other mixed medium very well. In this exhibition, Schiffman has cut, manipulated and threaded the material into suspended figurative sculpture. This allows the forms to move and light to filter through the work in strikingly beautiful ways.
These floating forms take on a powerful presence in the gallery as they respond to the slightest air currents, creating interaction and conversations with each other. This evokes a variety of emotional responses, including humor, reverence, and nostalgia.
Joining this work are a number of select two-dimensional paintings Schiffman created in the 1980’s. These paintings were created on paper and affixed to various colored plexiglass sheets. They compliment the sculpture beautifully and provide additional insight into Schiffman’s development with sculpture.
Artist’s Statement
“In this my third solo exhibition at Figureworks Gallery, I look into the material nature of art in our time. I begin with figure drawings which I sew into three dimensions with a focus on lightness and expression. Over time I experimented with various materials including the plastics which are part of this show. I settled on Lutradur because it is light and transparent. I greatly admire the work of Jean Dubuffet. Other influences include Greer Langton, Marta Kuhn-Weber and Eileen Gray”.
Figureworks is located at 168 North 6th St., Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY 11211, one block from the Bedford Avenue “L” train. The gallery is open to the public Saturday and Sunday from 1-6 PM and is dedicated to exhibiting contemporary and 20th century fine art of the human form.

Fridman Gallery presents Eat a Pink Owl, Tamar Ettun’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
Ettun’s flamboyant assemblages call for a physical response in the viewer: their sharp-edged limbs and horns point to internalized pain and destructive tendencies; yet their soft bodies and relaxed poses suggest rebirth and pleasure. Pink used to be a boys’ color, becoming a symbol of submissiveness ascribed to women only after World War II. Eat a Pink Owl is about gender fluidity, femmes repossessing pink as a symbol of assertiveness, through bodily forms and primal emotions.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog with an essay by Wendy Vogel and an interview with the artist by Barry Schwabsky.

At a time of heightened uncertainty, division, and geopolitical tensions, I am you, you are too foregrounds works from the Walker Art Center’s collection that explore contemporary life through themes of citizenship and belonging, borders and barriers, and ways in which everyday life informs our understanding of ourselves. Bringing together a diverse, multigenerational, and international group of artists, the exhibition questions how we memorialize the past and understand the social, geographic, and political structures that shape us.
Alexander Gray Associates is a contemporary art gallery in New York. Through exhibitions, research, and artist representation, the Gallery spotlights artistic movements and artists who emerged in the mid- to late-Twentieth Century. Dearest friends,
It has been a year filled with ups and downs, lots of learning to transform difficulty into growth. I have been very lucky to perform a lot this year, each performance filled with its own discoveries (we are light, Linton:15lbs/3hrs per week/$31.50. and (de)sangrar, among others).
I am thrilled to share with you my next performances in September and October:
As part of a collaboration with Monique Blom, we have been selected in Nuit Blanche Festival in Saskatoon, Canada to present Blood and Soil: The Art of Survival.
During October, I was selected to present SENSEsoscope as part of Art in Odd Places Festival in NYC . Later this year, I will perform Chuy:12 hour shift in Miami.
