In the ongoing series “Feed da Booty,” Amanda Alfieri figuratively and literally seeks to embody and ingest media-reinforced stereotypes and symbols within multiple social and cultural constructs such as race, gender, and sexuality. For this body of work, Amanda takes a familiar social media meme “feed da booty” verbatim as a solution to make my own “grow,” pushing my body through intensive exercise along with an implausible post-workout “booty feeding.”

Ten years ago I came to the United States in pursuit of freedom of self-expression, luggage full of passion. Ten years later, my passion has been burning out due to struggles with legal status in the US, visa applications and rejections, foreign policies, and Trump. Crawling back into the luggage that once carried all my dreams, I am rotted inside. What is left in me is helplessness and hopelessness.
Performance begins at 3pm at the pavilion near the southwest corner of Union Square Park.

Anonymous managed to poignantly (if unintentionally) raise awareness about the threat of infrastructure insecurity by activating San Francisco’s air raid sirens on Halloween night 2011. Emergency systems get hacked all the time. This one just happened to wake people up.
Chip Lord/Ant Farm fed workers in a corporate cafeteria and they were arrested.
Chris Johanson worked as a graffiti artist briefly, early on in his career – his goal now is to topple the system that exploits the planet. Chris will be producing an edition of housing survival documents to be distributed for free.
Judith Donath, Mark Pauline, Ken Goldberg & Eric Paulos built a gun that destroyed American dollars by a remote control system operated by the audience.
Paul Kos and Mel Henderson were arrested for spelling out the word ATTICA in lights on a hillside in Newport Beach, Ca.
Trevor Paglen, current MacArthur Fellowship “Genius Grant” awardee. On the occasion of a photo shoot of a military base was encountered by American military police who ask to see his photos; upon viewing he was asked to delete it – Paglen refused.
A jurisdictional issue arises when photographing NSA bases in Germany. Signs on the fences warn that photography is forbidden, but that’s not true. A US military officer has no legal power over a German national standing on German soil outside an American military base – nor, for that matter, over an American national on German soil, as in his cae..
Michele Pred’s Wage Gaps series includes cut up dollars. The $Bills are cut to the exact percentage that women make according to their racial background compared to a white man. Defacing American Currency is against the law.
Ivory Serra has been researching the Port Chicago disaster for over a decade. He was approached by the Fed security and forced to delete images he took of the port but had a film camera with photos that the authorities didn’t find.
Rigo23’s statue of Leonard Peltier was illegally moved from the campus of American University after receiving death threats.

FALL 2017
Hi Everyone, I’m very excited to announce that the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has commissioned my new project HUSTLERS & EMPIRES as part of their Performance in Practice Series. It will premiere at SFMOMA in March 2018.
HUSTLERS & EMPIRES is a multichannel film installation with live performance that takes inspiration from Iceberg Slim’s novel PIMP, Marguerite Duras’ novel THE LOVER, and Federico Fellini’s film TOBY DAMMIT. It looks at transgression as a mode of survival and examines how the hustler survives despite all odds. It stars the amazing performers SHANNON FUNCHESS, JOHN KELLY, and VIVA RUIZ who each write and perform original songs for the piece.
There’s a lot of collaborators on this project including cinematography by Ed David; costumes by Karen Young and Neon Music; set design by And or Forever; original music by the performers and additional music by Jonathan Kreinik. I’ll be sending more images and updates in the coming weeks.
I’m in San Francisco this week presenting a talk at the San Francisco Art Institute with SFMOMA curator Frank Smigiel. THIS WEEK Tues Nov 7, 7:00-9:00p at San Francisco Art Institute.
Later this month I’ll be presenting work as part of the collective live projection STATE OF EMERGENCY, curated by Nina Felshin and Lenore Malen, and presented on the streets of New York City. The exhibition features thought-provoking work by artists and activists about the current political crisis. If you’re in SF or NYC I’d love to see you!

Michelle Handelman: Hustlers & Empires | November 7
Graduate Lecture Series co-presentation with SFMOMA
Michelle Handelman’s presentation phantasmagoric video installations create hypnotic and complex spaces of ever-shifting queer identities. Blurring the line between performance and reality, she re-contextualizing historical figures in cinema and literature by casting subcultural icons who play versions of themselves within a cinematic framework. Exploring philosophical questions of existence, she confronts the things we collectively fear and deny-sexuality, death, chaos. Handelman will introduce her project Hustlers & Empires, a SFMOMA co-commission and her project Irma Vep, The Last Breath (2013/15) starring Zackary Drucker and Flawless Sabrina.
Michelle Handelman is a Guggenheim Fellow who has exhibited at Broad Art Museum; MIT List Visual Arts Center; Participant, Inc, NYC; PERFORMA Biennial; The Henry Art Gallery; Guangzhou 53 Art Museum; and REDCAT. During the 1990s, Handelman was based in SF where she collaborated with Monte Cazazza, a pioneer of the Industrial music scene; directed the feature doc BloodSisters (1996), and performed in several films by Lynn Hershman-Leeson. Her work is in many collections including Kadist Art Foundation; di Rosa Foundation and Preserve; Zabludowicz Art Trust. She’s an Associate Professor in the Film, Media and Performing Arts department at Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC.

This show takes place in the framework of Alessandro De Francesco’s one-year project in Anima Ludens space entitled Un un sans images – Poetry as Artistic Practice, co-curated by François de Coninck and Gregory Lang, confronting his work with those by other invited artists. From November 10th to December 23rd 2017 Alessandro’s work dialogues with a room piece by Peter Downsbrough. The whole project is documented by a continuously updated blog.

Peter Downsbrough is a pioneer in the generation of American minimal artists. His works investigate the relationship between space and language with a practice that has pushed the boundaries of conceptual art and concrete art. In his works related to architecture, the artist investigates linearity and the essence of line, with letters and simple words – made from metal or adhesive tape, always in black color – to give a structure and rhythm to surfaces and environments. He seeks convergence lines, recomposes points of view, and positions geometrical forms, with a sharp sense that reframes and positions space.
His refined projects reveal themselves through placement of his gesture within a given context, and through precise interventions in the urban landscape or in the framework of a page, or well of a postcard. His work generates intervals by evoking the notion of tridimensionality that is expressed in a hollowed out manner to re-establishing existing space. And so, the artist makes in a new game of balance to challenge the familiar.
Like here: with AND/ AS SET THE THEN THEN, Peter Downsbrough proposes a combination of easily identifiable linguistic elements, with simple conjunctions and coordinations, and uses vertical lines to integrate and question architectural structures and their constraints.

12. Nicole Eisenman, FF Alumn, at The New School, Manhattan, Nov. 14
On November 14, Nicole Eisenman will address the dialogue between her painting practice and expansion into sculpture, in particular her works for the public realm like Sketch for a Fountain. Following her recent presentation at the New Museum, Eisenman’s commission for this year’s Skulptur Projekte Münster arranges casually posed androgynous bronze and plaster figures around a water basin that simultaneously adopts and confronts the traditional art historical image of nude bathers.
On November 29, Alfredo Jaar will discuss his many public interventions that invite the Western world to consider the grave consequences of its frequent indifference toward suffering in the developing world. Among these is one of his most iconic artworks, “A Logo For America,” which he premiered in 1987 as part of Public Art Fund’s Messages to the Public series.

Dear Friends,
This November, I am excited to announce a few exciting new opportunities to share my work.
Currently on view in Cracow, Poland is a group exhibition “A New Region of the World” in which my work is featured at Bunkier Sztuki. I was recently onsite in Cracow where I delivered a tour of the exhibition and participated in a panel discussion at the Ethnographic Museum in a day long symposium.
Back in Chicago I am also participating in a group show at Gallery400. Traduttore, Traditore opened Friday November the 3rd and runs until December 16th. As well on November 15th I am in conversation with Professor Stephen F Eisenman of Art History at Northwestern University to give a talk on the work of William Blake at the Block Museum. The talk starts at 6pm.
Last, for all who may not be able to make it to these opportunities, I am also currently featured in an online exhibition curated by Christopher Clary. “SAFE” explores the the idea of safety and safe-space through an intersection of artists and projects assembled and written about by Clary online.

Edition of 12. This show, “Garden of Earthly Delights” is curated by Maddy Rosenberg, HABER SPACE is dedicated to art about scientific phenomena.
This bookwork is featured in this show, and several of her print installations and mixed-media works, are also in the front room “Artist’s Book Gallery” :

PRINT INSTALLATION: Sewn Jackets and Shirts Installation 4 archival digital print collages of scanned articles of clothing belonging to the artist, and still worn, since the 1960s; Each piece comprises 12 prints, sewn back-to-back and together by the artist with black cotton thread. Each is placed in Artelope See-Throughs, and hung by Steel Binding Rings suspended from Blond Wooden Hangars, 26 x 38 inches each, complete set of 4,
c. BOXED BOOKWORK: “Dirty Book,” Boxed, 2009. A boxed, comb-bound, handcrafted book of 8 actual sheet of laminated “dry dirt” cleaned from distinct areas of the artist’s kitchen and studio, plus 51 scanned and digitally printed, double-sided sheets. Two chapters: “Past Life” and “Art History”, plus a “Dirty Joke.” Each lamination and print have been created as an abstract collage of authentic debris. 5 x 5 inches, edition of 12.
d. OFFSET BOOK: Homo Furturus, 1986. Publisher: Visual Studies Workshop Press. An offset book with smythsewn binding, printed spine, varnished black, white and cyan cover, containing 37 surreal photographs, 26 trompe l’oeil overlays, 34 pages of continuous journal-form entries as texture-to-be-read. DESGARRO (TEARING) treats notions of psychological uprootedness, and forced physical relocation. The project relates to the present state of migratory reform politics in the United States. In particular, to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). As children, many “Dreamers” were brought here by their parents. They grew up not knowing any other country, but the United States as their own. Though they may feel connected to their parents’ homeland, their upbringing makes them “American.” Through this project, Canonge explores the notion of tearing one’s position in the world. The “desgarro” (the tearing apart) is a form of segregation, displacement, and control.

Under the theme “Performing Liberation,” this month’s program focuses on natural states of freedom, personal choice, and social autonomy as explored in Live Action Art. Featured artists were invited to participate in the program as they visit, in many cases for the first time, the United States. Performances are followed by a round table discussion with attending audience. This month’s program features the works of guest artists from Argentina, Romania / Germany, Greece, and Philippines. The new works presented are centered on the theme of liberation and performance art.

ARTerial Performance Lab (APLAB) in collaboration with PerForMIA and hosted by Edge Zones Project presents the program NeXus during Miami Art Week. NeXus, a new initiative curated by Hector Canonge, will feature new works by local, national, and international artists during Miami Art Week. Hosted by Edge Zones Art Gallery, Miami’s leading performance art venue, created and directed by Charo Oquet, NeXus will present new performance art works by selected artists. For its first edition, NeXus curatorial theme explores and treat notions of human (dis)connections, personal binds, social (re)attachements, misplaced identities, and focal (dis)placements. As a new initiative, NeXus will bring diverse manifestations of performance art where the body is at the center of artistic expression, corporeal examination, and challenging execution.

I’m pleased to invite you to my solo show, Vessels at Thomas Hunter Projects at Hunter College.
Expanding upon my Vapors project presented earlier this year at SPRING/BREAK, I will be exhibiting a new video featuring the woolly mammoth alongside a group of sculptural ceramic animal rhytons, and related paintings. Conjuring new restorative myths and histories for the new Anthropocentric epoch, this exhibition continues to explore the historical ways man divined the future and sought influence over natural processes.
