3. Franc Palaia, FF Alumn, in Hudson Valley Magazine, June, and more
Franc Palaia, FF Alumn, will be featured in Hudson Valley Magazine in June. Franc’s photos will illustrate an article on composer and percussionist Joseph Bertolozzi and his Tower Music project where he played the Eiffel Tower as a musical instrument. Franc spent two weeks with Joe and a team of eight for two weeks in Paris in 2013 where Joseph banged, tapped, scraped and hit thousands of surfaces on the Eiffel Tower and recorded them in order to compose an entire CD of music created solely on the Tower sounds. The magazine will feature a story on the project and Franc’s photos will illustrate it.
Franc will also present a solo show of his Tower Music photographs at Vassar College’s Palmer Gallery from June 14 – July 28. The opening reception is June 14th from 4:30-6:30pm. NEW YORK and ROME (April 2016) – The American Academy in Rome is pleased to announce winners of the 2016 Rome Prize Fellowship, which annually supports advanced independent work in the arts and humanities within a unique residential community. These thirty-one artists and scholars will receive a stipend, workspace, and room and board for a period of six-months to two years at the Academy’s 11-acre campus in Rome. The Rome Prize winners were presented at the Arthur and Janet C. Ross Rome Prize Ceremony, which was held in Kaplan Hall Auditorium at the New School in New York City.

The Howl! Festival-celebrating the artistry and legacy of Allen Ginsberg-will present a staged reading of 33 & 1/3 CORNELIA STREET at the newly renovated Howl! Gallery at 6 East First St, NYC, on Monday, June 6 at 9 PM. Alternating between Bohemian Greenwich Village and a 1970s Women’s Studies lecture by accidental feminist icon and painter Alice Neel, the play dramatizes the conflicts of spiritual vs. commercial ownership of art and personal stories. 33 & 1/3 Cornelia Street explores the conjoined legacy of urban legend/proto-Beat poet Joe Gould and celebrated New Yorker journalist Joseph Mitchell through the vortex of Neel’s groundbreaking 1933 portrait of Gould. Mitchell immortalized Gould in a 1942 The New Yorker profile for writing the longest book ever written and the first oral history-or did he? Later, Mitchell published a second profile, “Joe Gould’s Secret,” claiming Gould’s opus to be a hoax…or was it?
For the Howl! reading, Joe Gould will be played by Bob Holman, poet, Bowery Poetry founder and PBS Language Matters host. Alice Neel will be played by the legendary Mink Stole, featured in all of John Waters’ films. The cast will also feature Obie Award winner Matthew Maguire as Joseph Mitchell, Paul Gigante as Ken Doolittle, Carlo Fiorletta as Minetta Tavern bartender and Lulu Fogarty as Younger Alice Neel. Dramaturg is Wendy Wasdahl.
With the recent publication of Jill Lepore’s new book, “Joe Gould’s Teeth” (based on her New Yorker profile of the same name-marking the third time Gould has been featured in The New Yorker), as well as Thomas Kunkel’s 2015 biography, “Joseph Mitchell: Man in Profile,” and with Alice Neel a perennial for exhibitions, the play is play very timely and we look forward to a future full production.

As part of this residency, I will work and meet with rangers and biologists and get to learn more about the Rewilding of the Wood Bison in the refuge, which took place in 2015.

The exhibition Watched! Surveillance, Art and Photography reflects on the complexities of contemporary surveillance, with a specific attention to photography. The works in the exhibition are from the last ten years, and they convey different approaches to surveillance: from technologies used by state and authorities to everyday monitoring practices that have become an integrated part of our lives, especially within social media.
Contemporary surveillance is not limited to visual monitoring, but in order to understand how surveillance works, it is still necessary to address the photographic. Our entire existence is being photographed and visualized to an unprecedented degree. This raises new questions about voluntary and involuntary visibility, as well photohistorical issues of watching and being watched.
The artists in Watched! appropriate imagery and apply CCTV, Facial Recognition Technology, Google Street View, life-logging and virtual animation. They also reactivate older practices of spying, exposure and voyeurism. Conceptually, they probe issues of security, which are used as arguments for enhanced surveillance, but which often ignore the discriminatory scrutiny, criminalization and vulnerability that follow.
Watched! is part of a research project on surveillance, art, and photography in Europe in the new millennium, initiated by Louise Wolthers, Head of Research at the Hasselblad Foundation. The accompanying book, published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, includes artworks by 40 artists, as well as in-depth essays on surveillance by leading scholars within the field, such as Tom Holert, Hille Koskela and Peter Weibel.

The exhibition and the book are collaborations between the Hasselblad Foundation, Valand Academy, Kunsthal Aarhus, Galleri Image, ARoS and C/O Berlin.
Upcoming exhibition venues are Kunsthal Aarhus, October 14-December 31, 2016, with selected works displayed at Galleri Image and ARoS, in Aarhus, October 14-December 18, 2016; C/O Berlin February 17-May 21, 2017.

The CareForce One makes its NYC debut at Brooklyn Museum Target Family Saturday on June 4th from 5-9 pm. Interactive media, car, and advocates available 5-9 pm.
Check out the CareForce One’s graphics that trigger songs by those at the frontlines of care. The performance and accompanying artwork is being featured as part of the Brooklyn Museum’s Agit Prop exhibition, which runs through August 7th and comes at a time when New York’s City Council deliberates a Bill that would creating a Division of Paid Care, which would conduct public education and connect workers to relevant systems & resources for enforcing their rights (Int. No. 1084).

Hello Friends,
I am pleased to announce my new one-person show on Tower Music/ Musique de la Tour, a photographic documentation of a unique musical project by composer and percussionist, Joseph Bertolozzi at Vassar College’s Palmer Gallery. The show debuts a selection of 30 large archival color prints from my Tower Music series. Joseph and a team of seven spent two weeks on the Eiffel Tower harvesting over 10,000 sounds from which Joseph composed an entire CD of music using only the recorded sounds. The exhibit will also include video clips by Tower Music videographer Joseph Redwood Martinez. Six of the eight team members may attend the opening reception and will meet and greet and answer questions. Joseph Bertolozzi and I will conduct a CD and book signing during the reception.

In collaboration with Seager Gray Gallery, the ICA will present This is Not a Book: Chapter Two in the Focus Gallery.
For the past decade, Seager Gray has taken the lead in presenting art related to books and recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of their now widely acclaimed Art of the Book exhibition, which takes place each May at the Mill Valley gallery. The ICA’s presentation culls from that rich history and continues where the ICA’s 2001 exhibition This is Not A Book left off. The current exhibition is curated by Donna Seager.
The typical anatomy of a printed book is text and/or images on paper, bounded by glue or sewn together. On the interior pages, authors write stories and information about places, memories, facts, and images, and on the exterior, a cover details the title of the book, name of the author, and often offers a teaser summary. In This is Not a Book: Chapter 2, 28 artists expand on the very essence of a book. The ubiquitous objects on the shelves of our homes or libraries have been astonishingly altered into wondrous sculptures. One might still discern the materiality of the pages and the characteristics of the covers. However, they are now transfigured into inventive forms, from intimate, finely carved objects to large-scale installations to glowing cubes. With curiosity, whit, and play, artists in This is Not a Book: Chapter 2 create sculptural objects that question our assumptions about book design, the future of the book, and our relationship to these ordinary, but important and cherished publications.

NADA is pleased to announce a video and music programming series featuring Michel Auder in collaboration with Kevin Beasley and Gianni Jetzer to be held at The David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center.
View three short films by Michel Auder-Heads of the Town, Endless Column, and 1967-including a talk between the artist and curator Gianni Jetzer followed by a sound/performance piece from rising artist Kevin Beasley, one of Auder’s students whose work was featured at the 2014 Whitney Biennial.
Coming of age in the Parisian bohemia of the ’60s and Warhol’s New York of the ’70s, Michel Auder’s “elusive and tantalizing” works (New York Times) are essential to anyone seeking to understand what constitutes beauty in the realm of video art.

Enacting Stillness includes a group of visual and performance artists who are engaged with stillness, stoppage, and slowing down in the context of performance. Artists in the exhibition employ gestures that involve turning away, inward, and upward, upending our expectations for the continuity of dance and theatrical compositions and lines of movement and thought. Enacting Stillness considers the political and emotional potential that these unexpected ruptures might mean to both the artist and the viewer.
