Mutant Monkey Business
The Phatory is pleased to announce a new installation in the gallery’s window by Joe Lewis entitled Mutant Monkey Business which will be on view starting Sunday, May 1st, through Friday, May 22nd.
As an advanced critique of Capitolism [sic] Lewis recalls:”The first time I saw the scaffolding around the Capitol building it reminded me of a jungle gym. I remember how my young daughter used to climb all over the one in Washington Square Park, hang upside down, and jump from the top rungs into my arms – scaring the hell out of me. I’d set her down and off she’d go again, not a care in the world as she’d twist and turn, trying to fly. When I was a kid, they called them monkey bars. And that’s what comes to mind when I see our elected officials behind banks of microphones, imitating each other’s body language, twitching with hostility held in check by the thinnest veneer of civility. It always reminds me of a field trip I went on in third grade to the Central Park Zoo Monkey House. It was loud and smelled bad. One monkey had his back to the group but kept looking over his shoulder. Mrs. Fireburg was chattering away about something, and the monkey turned around, and I think he spits in her face. We were quickly ushered out of the building, but Mrs. Fireburg never came back to class. Today, I know what that monkey was doing – the same thing those guys are doing in the Capitol Building”.

Forfatternes Klimaaksjon (Authors Climate Action) is pleased to include the works of American artist Betty Beaumont and other world-wide environmental artists, writers, and activists representing the notion: “Everyone has the right to an environment that ensures health and a nature where production, capability, and diversity is preserved. Natural resources should be allocated on the basis of a long-term and versatile use that safeguard this right for posterity.”
Included on the website are a series of Beaumont’s photographs of the materials, fabrication, installation, and evolution of the project, Ocean Landmark, 1978-1980.
“Ocean Landmark dealt with the issues of reclamation and the future, working through the one toward the viability of the other. Beaumont was seeking alternatives to standard assumptions, both about art and about technology. She began with two pieces of information, first with the knowledge that the Atlantic Continental Shelf is unwilling host to the dumping of vast quantities of hazardous and toxic wastes, and that the burning of coal produces quantities of coal fly-ash waste. Beaumont worked with a team of scientists who were investigating ways to stabilize coal waste. They developed a process to stabilize it in water. Beaumont proposed the concept of turning this product into an underwater sculpture, which would function as an artificial reef, creating a place where people might come and fish. The sculpture now lies seventy feet below the surface, on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, an active fishing ground, unseen, but flourishing. It is documented in aerial photography of the process, underwater footage and sonograms. In her voiceover in the film, The Journey, some of the questions she poses as the barge makes its journey are ‘How do we use energy in a world of diminishing resources?’; ‘How do we feed the people of the world?’; ‘What is cognition?’; ‘What are the poetics of space?’” –Beth Harber, The Binnewater Tides
Beaumont freely integrates cross-disciplinary ideas and the connections among them to produce works that reveal transformational ideas about our contemporary world and urban landscapes. The flow from the specific, concrete, and technical, to the abstract, meditative and lyrical characterizes her work.
Since 1970, Beaumont’s art has been exhibited in the US, Europe, Japan, South Korea, South America, Africa, Egypt, Mexico and Cuba, including the Whitney (NYC), Centre Pompidou-Metz (France), Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Egypt), National Museum of Modern Art (Tokyo and Kyoto) and MoMA PS1 (NYC). Beaumont has received the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award (University of Calif., Berkeley), Pollock Krasner and Creative Capital grants and NEA and NYSCA Fellowships. She has produced work in a variety of media including photography, sculpture, installations, public interventions, and new media.

LCF Agency for International Arts & Culture Programs and Creative Tech Week, New York City are pleased to announce the presentation of Nina Yankowitz’s Spiral Vortex Paint Game 2014-2016 from her ongoing series Criss~Crossing the Divine.
The Spiral Vortex Paint Game is a multimedia video installation that invited viewers to play games using an interactive wand to curate and prioritize topic-words they wish to explore.
The process of playing the games actively engages our understanding that as personal perspectives change so does how we interpret those sacred texts. The software interface was designed in collaboration with a team of tech experts to parse all the topics that the player chooses in order to determine which unique results will project on the wall. The participant can scroll through their customized collection of scriptures and even download a copy to keep. The searches deliver an expansive, constantly changing landscape in which new questions lead to new searches and results ad infinitum. Criss~Crossing The Divine highlights the core similarities between the holy books of different religions, to cultivate cross-cultural understanding.
The complete Criss~Crossing the Divine multimedia installation hosts robotic sculptures, video projections and interactive games addressing today’s expanding religious intolerance which fuels violence and global conflict. World religions were founded on great storytelling and a flexible body of scriptures whose content could be interpreted according to the shifting needs of different generations. While in a virtual dialogue with 46,000 original scriptures from five faiths: The Old Testament, New Testament, Hindu Rig Vedas, The Quran, and Buddhist texts, these explorations underscore that intolerance is not a function of differing religious beliefs. The project originated with the artist’s interest in inspiring people to reassess their personal biases regarding religion and faith.
As a pioneering feminist artist, known more recently for her bold technology-rich collaborative works, Nina Yankowitz’s prolific career, beginning late 1960’s /early 1970’s, has been defined by artistic experimentation across all media. Her works have been included in solo and group exhibitions at MOMA NY, the Brooklyn Museum, Kunsthaus Hamburg, GuildHall Art Museum, National Academy Museum, the Whitney Museum’s Inaugural Biennale, the Larry Aldrich Museum, MOMA Kiev, Thessaloniki Biennial, and Kunsthalle Vienna, among many others. Her work figures in numerous public and private collections worldwide and she has been awarded grants from various prestigious institutions such as the National Endowment for the Arts, Ford Foundation, Pollock-Krasner Foundation and was a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome. Yankowitz’s work has been written about in a wide range of publications including: The New York Times, The Village Voice, Vogue, Artforum, ArtNews, and the Wall Street Journal.

Chun Hua Catherine Dong, born in China, is a visual artist working with performance, photography, and video. She received a M.F.A. from Concordia University and a B.F.A from Emily Carr University Art & Design in Canada. She has performed and exhibited her works in New York, Boston, London, Delhi, Dublin, Helsinki, Moscow, Turin, Tornio, Toronto, Venice, Montreal and Vancouver. Her perforamce video work has been screened in Mexico, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Colombia, Spain, The Netherlands, Finland, Poland, Greece, Romania, Croatia, Denmark, Sweden, Scotland, USA, and Canada. Among many other awards, she is the recipient of Franklin Furnace Award in 2014.
