Capricious is pleased to announce the release of Ellen Cantor: “I’m Still Coming,” a dual catalogue and archival exposé that explores the pivotal exhibition, Coming to Power: 25 Years of Sexually X-Plicit Art By Women, originally curated by the late artist, Ellen Cantor, in 1993, along with its re-staging in 2016 by curator Pati Hertling and artist, Julie Tolentino.
Cantor’s 1993 Coming to Power: 25 Years of Sexually X-Plicit Art by Women put into dialogue a generation of pioneering and provocative feminist artists working including Alice Neel, Lynda Benglis, Carolee Schneemann, Nancy Spero, with a younger generation including Nicole Eisenman, GB Jones, Monica Majoli, Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman, and others. Cantor also drew points of perspective from the queer community, specifically engaging Clit Club, an intergenerational, multi-racial queer and sex positive lesbian nightclub founded in 1990.
In re-staging Cantor’s Coming to Power in 2016, Hertling and Tolentino followed Cantor’s lead and invited yet another generation of young artists and writers to participate in the project as a way of shared thinking with contemporary notions of gender, the art market, and the grip (and release) of explicit sexuality. The book includes original essays by historians Liz Kotz, Linda Nochlin, Jan Avgikos, and the artist, Lorraine O’Grady that accompanied the original show, as well as newly commissioned essays by artists, curators, thinkers: Amalle Dublon and Constantina Zavitsanos, Ashton Cooper, Vivian Crockett, and Clara López Menéndez.
I’m Still Coming also offers a glimpse into the provocative works of FlucT, luciana achugar, Kia Labeija, Xandra Ibarra/La Chica Boom, Zackary Drucker & Orlando Tirado, Jim Fletcher, Narcissister, niv Acosta, and Jen Rosenblit and their collaborators, who were part of the performance program featured in the 2016 exhibition which aimed to harness the impact and articulations of intersectional feminism, sexual politics, and queer practice via the lives of diverse, queer, trans, and genderqueer artists.
The book additionally chronicles the unprecedented partnership amongst five New York City institutions. Exhibitions and programming of Cantor’s work were offered by 80WSWE, Maccarone, Foxy Productions, Participant Inc., Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI), Skowhegan School of Painting, and MOMA-highlighting the lush, visionary, and audacious aspects of Cantor’s drawings, paintings, curatorial projects, sculpture, assemblage, video, film, and evocative writing. Another section features a reprint of an interview between Cantor and Cerith Wyn Evans, a conversation between Lia Gangitano/Jonathan Berger and Julie Tolentino/Pati Hertling, as well as archival material from Cantor’s diary entries and never-seen sketches from Cantor’s personal papers.

The Queens Museum is excited to present Patty Chang’s most extensive work to date, The Wandering Lake (2009-2017), a project that redefines the roles of artists, images, and performance in the construction of narratives through an exhibition that integrates video projection, photography, sculpture, publication, and performance as one expansive body of work.
The Wandering Lake is a personal, associative, narrative meditation on mourning, caregiving, and landscape. The exhibition of this project at the Queens Museum will be designed to mirror Chang’s larger artistic approach; a singular complex narrative will be presented through an installation that attempts to replicate the complex way stories develop-through geography, history, cultural mythology, fiction, and personal experience. While Chang’s multi-year project was in part inspired by turn-of-the-century colonial explorer Sven Hedin’s book Wandering Lake (1938)-which tells the story of a migrating body of water in the Chinese desert-the project also chronicles the loss of Chang’s father as well as her pregnancy and the birth of her son.
Patty Chang (b. 1972, San Leandro, CA) Patty Chang received a B.A. from the University of California, San Diego in 1994. Her work has been exhibited nationwide and internationally at such institutions as The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Guggenheim Museum, New York; New Museum, New York; BAK- basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht, NL, the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Fri-Art Centre d’Art Contemporain Kunsthalle, Fribourg, Switzerland; Chinese Arts Centre, Manchester, England; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Hamburg Kunstverein, Hamburg, Germany; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Sweden. Chang lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
Major programming support for the Queens Museum is provided by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Additional support is provided by Ford Foundation, Lambent Foundation, Booth Ferris Foundation, the Charina Endowment Fund, and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund.

elin o’Hara slavick will be participating in this year’s Governors Island Art Fair, opening September 2, every weekend through October 1. She will be exhibiting cyanotypes of A-Bombed artifacts from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. This work is featured in the exhibition After Hiroshima at IoDeposito’s B#SGallery, August 6 – October 31, 2017, Treviso, Italy, with a special event in Venice, August 9. Slavick will be lecturing at the opening in Treviso and the special event in Venice.

Episode 8 – Art Of Risking
Episode 8, “Art Of Risking”, of the LET ME BE FRANK web documentary series, is now available for viewing. Readings by Linda Mac and hip hop musician Tha Archivez. This episode explores Moore’s approach to performance, involving risk, vulnerability and self-trust, the difference between traditional theater and direct participatory performance, and how Moore took Richard Schechner’s ideas into the next stage of his life/work, communal intimacy. Episode 8 includes “Hollywood Calls”, the third episode of “How To Handle An Anthropologist” a recurring feature in the Let Me Be Frank series, from the soon-to-be-published book by the same name. Another segment, “How Linda Met Frank”, is read by Linda Mac, Moore’s lover and partner in crime for almost 40 years, and producer of the Let Me Be Frank series with Michael LaBash. Also included in Episode 8 is a montage from the years of classic Frank Moore/Linda Mac performances of “I Got You Babe”. Music by Frank Moore, Sander Roscoe Wolff, Vinnie Spit Santino, Frank Moore’s Shaman’s Den Jams, Michael LaBash, Billy Murray Haydon Quartet, and Tha Archivez.
Let Me Be Frank is a video series based on the life and art of shaman, performance artist, writer, poet, painter, rock singer, director, TV show host, teacher and bon vivant, Frank Moore.
The series is partly a biography, but also a presentation of Frank’s philosophy on life and on art. Twenty-plus episodes have been planned based on Frank’s book, Art Of A Shaman, which was originally delivered as a lecture at New York University in 1990 as part of the conference “New Pathways in Performance”. Each episode will feature readings by people who played an important part in Frank’s life, either as friends, lovers, students, artistic collaborators or supporters of his art.
Let Me Be Frank presents Frank’s exploration of performance and art as being a magical way to effect change in the world … performance as an art of melting action, of ritualistic shamanistic doings/playings. Using Frank’s career and life as a “baseline”, it explores this dynamic playing within the context of reality shaping.

Mark Mothersbaugh: Myopia

In Myopia, the prolific composer, musician, and tinkerer Mark Mothersbaugh (b. 1950), offers a rich investigation of the relationship between technology and individuality in a post-punk, post-selfie capitalist society that he seems to navigate with ease, moving seamlessly between costumes, home recordings, DEVO performances, prints, drawings, paintings, sculptures, rugs, video animations, sculptures, installations and a series of some thirty thousand postcard-sized drawings he produced over the last five decades.
In previous incarnations as the front man for the New Wave(ish) rock’n’roll band DEVO, and then as the creator of scores for Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, the Rugrats franchise and then Wes Anderson movies, Mothersbaugh has publically exhibited an apparent ability to culturally mutate, even while making “celebrations of mutations” his subject matter.
This adroit facility to transform himself and his Pop environment has now extended to the fine art world in this recent show that was the final stop on a tour organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, and traveling to Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota and elsewhere before arriving at NYU’s Grey Art Gallery.

Now in its fourth cycle, Bronx Calling: The Fourth AIM Biennial features the work of seventy-two emerging artists from the 2016 and 2017 classes of the Bronx Museum’s Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) program. AIM provides professional development resources to emerging artists living and working in the New York metropolitan area. The exhibition is organized by Aylet Ojeda Jequin, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art, National Museum of Fine Arts, Havana; and the Bronx Museum’s Christine Licata, Director of Community and Public Programs; and, Heather Reyes, independent curator.
