Midtown Detroit, Inc. (MDI) announced today details of DLECTRICITY 2017, the stunning nighttime outdoor festival of art and light with DTE Energy Foundation returning as the event’s presenting sponsor. DLECTRICITY, presented by DTE Energy Foundation, will showcase the work of 35 international, national and local artists who have been commissioned to illuminate the Woodward corridor with cutting-edge installations of light, video, performance, and other unexpected works of art on September 22-23, 2017, in Midtown Detroit from 7 p.m. to midnight. MDI also announced major funders and a new footprint for the event, spanning from the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) to the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD). The event features artists from Australia, the UK, Japan and Germany, as well as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, Baltimore, and Cleveland. Detroit’s own art community also will be well represented. The event is inspired by other internationalfestivals known for bringing the best of contemporary light and technology-based arts to the streets of major cities like Paris, Sydney, Toronto, Minneapolis and New York.
“DLECTRICITY has bonded audiences in public spaces with art that has surprised, enlightened and awed us. It promotes art that is of the moment, yet speaks to timeless themes through new means,” said Benjamin Kennedy, Kresge Detroit Program managing director. “Within that context, we are particularly proud to support Midtown Detroit’s focus on recruiting and commissioning Detroit-based artists and artists of color, and elevating the legacy of the 1967 rebellion and other themes relevant to Detroit residents.”
“With arts and culture at its core, DLECTRICITY inspires connection and inclusivity, offering a unique chance to advance collisions between Detroit’s talented creative community and some of the most influential artists in the world,” said Katy Locker, program director for Detroit at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Knight Foundation is supporting three high-caliber artists, including Rashaad Newsome, Pope.L and Apetechnology as part of the festival.

Tate Modern presents Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, a landmark exhibition exploring sociopolitical issues played out among and beyond African American artists from 1963 to 1983. At a time when race and identity became major issues in music, sport and literature, brought to public attention by iconic figures like Aretha Franklin, Muhammad Ali and Toni Morrison, ‘Black Art’ was being defined and debated across the country in vibrant paintings, photographs, prints and sculptures. Featuring more than 150 works by over 60 artists, many on display in the UK for the first time, Soul of a Nation presents an opportunity to see how American cultural identity was re-shaped at a time of social unrest and political struggle.
The show begins in 1963 with the formation of the Spiral Group, a New York-based collective. They questioned how Black artists should relate to American society, with key figures like Romare Bearden and Norman Lewis responding to current events in their photomontages and abstract paintings. Artists also considered the locations and audiences for their art – from local murals to nationally circulated posters and newspapers – with many turning away from seeking mainstream gallery approval to show artwork in their own communities through Black-owned galleries and artist-curated shows. The exhibition uses archive photographs and documentary material to illustrate the mural movement, including the ‘Wall of Respect’ in Chicago and the ‘Smokehouse’ wall paintings in Harlem. The way artists engaged with street activism are explored through posters and newspapers, such as the work of the Black Panther Party’s Culture Minister Emory Douglas, who declared “The ghetto itself is the gallery”.
Further themes investigated in the exhibition include the emergence of Black Feminism through the work of Lorraine O’Grady, Betye Saar and Kay Brown, showing how the period marked a revolutionary moment of visibility for Black women, and debates over the possibility of a Black aesthetic in photography featuring work by Roy DeCarava. The exhibition also spotlights Just Above Midtown gallery (JAM), a pioneering New York commercial gallery that displayed the work of avant-garde Black artists and whose legendary programme spanned innovative approaches to sculpture and performance, using materials as unexpected as Black hair and tights.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue from Tate Publishing and a programme of talks.
Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power will travel to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas and the Brooklyn Museum, New York.

Chelsea NY: Viridian Artists is pleased to present an exhibition of outstanding art by six artists who are part of Viridian Artists’ Affiliate program. The show extends from July 18thto August 5th with a reception to meet the artists Thursday July 22nd, 6-8pm.
“THE HEAT IS ON” alludes to the often pressing circumstances of life, our drive to move forward, the need to do it now, and of course, hot topics like the environment. Art offers artists solutions and ways of dealing with “the heat” of daily life. But the art itself gives the viewers too, methods and means to cope with life’s surprises & pitfalls. These artists will help you bear it all by visually seducing you in a wide variety of ways. Take your pick and be cool!!
MICHAEL RECK has been working exclusively with spray paint and stencils for several months now and recently reintroduced color back into the mix after working primarily in black and white for the past couple of years. ‘As the medium necessitates working in front of an exhaust fan, I have been trying to produce as much as possible before the New York summer grows too hot to work (or breathe) comfortably.”
DEB FLAGEL graduated with a degree in Art Education from Indiana University and holds a MFA in Visual Communication from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her professional background includes teaching, freelance design and restoration of commercial spaces. Flagel has been an exhibiting artist since 2005. Her work has been shown in Chicago, New York, and places in between. Sculptor Ron Moore, when I ask for some words about his art, says “The Heat is On’, is certainly apropos of our difficult, and continually upsetting time’s!! ~ Although my piece, which is entitled; ‘Yearning’s’, may not be specifically aligned with those larger frustration’s. ~ On a personal level, it attempts to represent the inner struggle(s), of trying to wrestle free from personal limitations. Then beyond that, to hopefully ‘run, and soar’ with the spirit of artistic wildness, as long as time and inspiration allows.”
In this group of works by KATHLEEN SHANAHAN, nature-inspired forms are partnered with contrasting elements, resulting in new visual entities. “In their stacked formations, these forged visual associations resemble totems. Appreciation of both the micro and the macro elements in nature and our attentiveness to them, especially given global warming and climate change, is both apropos and crucial to our humanity.” For the artist, this kind of preoccupation and focus is a much welcome and paradoxical escape/ responsibility.
JENNY BELIN’S drawings are inspired by 1950s/1960s swimsuit models. “As a feminist I am intrigued by the history of pinups: bombshell images of women were iconic at a time when sexuality was often perceived as a threat.”
VERNITA N’COGNITA continues to deal with the overabundance of stuff that would be thrown away if it were not made into art. These collages combine security envelope textures from junkmail with flipped and broken images from fashion magazines and other found fragments as the artist interweaves environmental realities & feminist fantasies in these works from the late 90’s til now.
Viridian’s Affiliate Program is an important aspect of the gallery’s mission to expand exhibition opportunities for outstanding under-known contemporary artists, those young as well as those older.

Our current political, racial, and cultural state has caused individual and mass stress. When the election results were announced, putting more stress on our already socially trying state, I thought what do I have? I have this space (The Box LA), and I have amazing artists and people around who inspire me everyday. So Hot Box was born. I gathered four amazing artists and friends, Dorit Cypis, Gina Lamb, Barbara T. Smith, and Corazon del Sol together to create three days of performances, lectures, workshops, blessings and lessons. This is the time to allow us to find the wisdom that lives amongst us; we hold this wisdom in ourselves and our collective community.

Residency Art Gallery (310 E. Queen St., Inglewood, Ca) is pleased to present The Ride Back to Black, a solo exhibition by Elizabeth Axtman. The exhibition will run from July 22nd through August 31st, 2017, with an opening reception on Saturday, July 22nd from 6pm to 9pm.
The Ride Back to Black is an exhibition that explores the perilous journey of Black athletes, entertainers and public figures that attempt to transcend their race to be accepted by the majority (aka “Crossing Over”). The work exhibited attempts to capture the desires and illusions of wanting to belong to something that historically rejects the idea of Blackness in America. The inevitable “Ride Back” back to Blackness is taken when the subject has discovered they were not viewed anymore as manageable, polite, docile, or containable as at the height of their celebrity.
Artist Statement:
“I’m not Black I’m OJ” —–Orenthal James “OJ” Simpson
OJ Simpson isn’t the first Black person to believe he successfully transcended race and he won’t be the last but in 1994 he had a very important phone call ring in his ear.
There is a very well known saying in the Black community known as the, “Nigga Wake Up Call” (for those of you that don’t know what a NWUC is: it’s when a Black person forgets their Blackness in any given situation and then reminded rather brutally by an unpredicted act of racism), many Black people have answered the call (begrudgingly) but none rang more thunderously or publically than OJ Simpson’s did.
Personally my fascination began with OJ in PE class during my sophomore year in high school. I remember my white teacher came barreling onto the field mad as hell yelling, “HE’S NOT GUILTY”!! I distinctly recall smirking to myself and being happy for all the reasons every Black person I saw on the news that day were…..none of which really seemed to do with the facts of the case but more with the long sordid legacy of race in this county. I was only 15 but I was wise enough to understand what race in America was really about, and a spark had been lit. I was, am deeply fascinated by OJ and his kin who have been seduced by whiteness to their own peril and this is my work about it.
OJ was paroled on July 20th, I hope he can make the opening…………

Hector Canonge, FF Alumn, continues with the presentation of “Derivas & Jornadas” in collaboration with artist Verónica Peña. The month long project (June 28 – July 27) consists of a residency program, exhibitions, performances, public interventions, talks, and workshops in various cities in Spain and Portugal.
“DERIVAS y JORNADAS” started in Tarragona, Spain, with the presentation of the performance / exhibition “Del Caos” (of Chaos) at La Grey Gallery. The artists are currently in La Rioja (July 2- 10) with the exhibition (IN)FLEXIONES at centro cultural La Gota de Leche (On view through July 23). They presented performances for the closing of ARTEFACTO, and for Fondo REPARTE in Santo Domingo de la Calzada. In Valencia, Canonge and Peña presented “Del Caos” (of Chaos) a performance and public intervention at Torres de Samora for the opening of the international festival INTRAMURS (July 11-13). They will be in Bilbao at BILBAO ARTE(July 18-20), and Madrid at Centro Cultural La Tortuga and Tabacalera (July 21-23). In Portugal, the artists will present work for ZARATAN ARTE in Porto and Lisbon (July 21-27). After completing the project, Canonge will travel to England for solo presentations in London (July 28 – August 3).
Hector Canonge and Verónica Peña are performance artists working at the convergence of various disciplines. They met in 2014 during the Month of Performance Art in Berlin in the program PERFORMEANDO organized by Canonge. After presenting work independently in the United States, and coinciding in various programs in Europe and Latin America, they decided to collaborate creating multimedia pieces that incorporate physical theater, movement based performance, dance-theater, and mediated installations. Argentinian born, Hector Canonge is based in New York City. His work integrates the use of new media technologies, cinematic narratives, performance art and social practice to treat issues related to the construction of identity, gender roles, and the politics of migration. Verónica Peña, born in Spain, is based in Indiana and Chicago. Her work explores the themes of absence, separation, and the search for harmony through performance art. Her recent work consists of experimental participatory performances that create shared moments amongst strangers. Independently, both artists have exhibited and presented work in the United States, Latin America, and Europe. As collaborators, since 2016, they presented the performances: De lo Ajeno (of Others) Queens Museum, and Rabbithole, New York City; De lo Lejano (of the Distant), Panoply Performance Lab, New York City; and the Exhibition and Performance Art program, UNDER OUR SKIN: Body and Territory in Performance Art, Patti & Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Their new work, De lo Possible (of Possibilities) will be premiered at TRISKELION ARTS Split Bill Program in March 2017. The artists are also preparing the continuation of their HEPTALOGE performance series for future presentations in the United States and abroad.

400-foot Road Tattoo Stretches Across 2 Blocks of Broadway!
Sew and Sew is 12′ wide and 400′ long on the 36-37 and 39-40 blocks of Broadway within the Garment District in Manhattan. Commissioned by the Garment District Alliance with support from the NYC DOT Art Program, it is on displayed from June 19th to Labor Day 2017. The artwork honors the long and illustrious history of the area by including names of people employed 20+ years in the fashion industry. Made to be walk and biked over, it is a key part of the City’s and Alliance’s summer effort to make these sections of Broadway a vehicle-free, urban garden and pedestrian oasis in the heart of the New York.

My article about the big, new, career-spanning exhibition of the unusual work of the American outsider artist Eugene Von Bruenchenhein has just been published in HYPERALLERGIC, the online arts-and-culture magazine. This exhibition is now on view at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin (through January 14, 2018).
Von Bruenchenhein (1910-1983) and his wife Marie lived in a humble house in the suburbs of Milwaukee. There, Eugene, who had worked as a florist and in a commercial bakery, often inspired by his muse and creative collaborator, Marie, produced a diverse body of work that included abstract paintings, handmade ceramic crowns and vessels, and sculptures made from chicken bones. He also made a large group of fantastic-erotic photographs in which Marie, his vixen and muse, appeared as his costumed or unclothed model. Together, Eugene and Marie conjured up a world of larger-than-life self-expression over which they reigned as king and queen.

(Los Angeles, CA) – Beginning July 15th, 2017, VENUS is pleased to present CUNT,
an exhibition featuring work by Judith Bernstein, VALIE EXPORT, Dorothy Iannone, Marilyn Minter, Carolee Schneemann, and Betty Tompkins. Comprised of important and historical works from each artist’s career, as well as new works produced expressly for the exhibition, the show will be on view through September 2nd, 2017.
On view in the gallery is an expansive selection of work in diverse media by six artists who unapologetically create representations of female sexuality. Bound by a dedication to alter the ways in which women’s bodies are represented in both fine art and media, these artists worked independently of one another to create images that unabashedly portray the vagina as a locus of power. The exhibition features works produced between 1964 and the present, in order to situate these artists’ practices as in part a reaction against the misogyny present in the art world in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as to celebrate the fortitude and dogged artistic activism that these artists have shared for nearly five decades.
The history of women in art has been, in large part, the history of women as subject or as muse. The artists included in CUNT make work that runs counter to this dominant history, asserting instead that women can be both image and image-maker. The exhibition argues
that methods of representation have an impact upon the interpretation of bodies and histories, in a way that can challenge governing understandings of female sexuality. Each artist in the exhibition contributes work that employs imagery of the body, of copulation, or of masturbation, that underscores these conversations, but none of the images elevate, romanticize, or subdue their subject matter for the comfort of the viewer. Instead, these works enlarge, repeat, and glorify images of women and vaginas in order to demand that the viewer respond to the work with an understanding of women as both subject and maker. Taken together, the show assembles work by a group of artists who have made it their life’s work to champion both the centrality and importance of female perspectives in creative production.
ABOUT JUDITH BERNSTEIN
Judith Bernstein (b. 1942, Newark, NJ) lives and works in New York City. She received her BFA from Yale University, and her MFA from the Yale University School of Art in 1967, and her painting practice has been marked by an engagement with sexual and political activism. Bernstein was a founding member of A.I.R. Gallery, the first gallery in the United States to be cooperatively owned and operated by women, and has been involved with the Guerilla Girls, a group of radical feminist artists dedicated to fighting sexism and racism in the art world, since the group’s founding in 1985. For CUNT, Bernstein has conceived a brand new 180-foot long mural for the gallery’s exterior wall, which renders one of her iconic black and white screws that suggests a violently mechanized phallus. In addition to the mural, Bernstein will exhibit a new series of sexualized protest paintings in the gallery, all rendered in day-glow paint, as well as a pair of her vertical screw paintings. With the day-glow paintings, Bernstein continues to develop a system of images she established in her CUNTFACE paintings, rendering enormous, predatory vaginas complete with sharp, gnashing teeth. Bernstein’s work is held in the collections of numerous public institutions around the world, including the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art, Athens; the Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Jewish Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase; the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zürich; and the Alex Katz Foundation, New York.
ABOUT VALIE EXPORT
VALIE EXPORT (b. 1940, Linz, Austria, as Waltraud Lehner) lives and works in Vienna. In 1967, the artist changed her name to VALIE EXPORT, shedding the names of both her father and husband, in favor of the name of her favorite brand of cigarettes. Her oeuvre includes work in nearly all media, including video, photography, performance, installation, writing, and publishing, and her production has long been marked by a desire to explore culturally coded taboos related to women as sexualized objects. EXPORT quickly gained notoriety
for her guerilla performances, in which she used her body as material. In one of her most discussed early performances, Touch Cinema (1968), EXPORT wore a shrunken box, or “movie theater,” around her naked upper body, and between 1968 and 1971, EXPORT invited strangers in ten European cities to touch her through the curtains affixed to the front of the box. Video documentation of Touch Cinema will be on view in the exhibition, as well as a video work titled Mann & Frau & Animal (1970-1973). EXPORT’s work is held in the collections of numerous public institutions around the world, including the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels; the Institute of Contemporary Art, London; the Tate Modern, London; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; MoMA P.S.1., New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai; the Generali Foundation, Vienna; and MUMoK, Vienna.
ABOUT DOROTHY IANNONE
Dorothy Iannone (b. 1933, Boston, MA) lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Iannone began painting in the mid-1950s, with no formal training, and developed an instantly recognizable style that pulled on a set of visual strategies gathered during periods of extensive travel. Her work has always addressed corporality and the human figure, and her flattened forms variously recall Japanese woodcuts, Greek urns, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and Byzantine Mosaics. Iannone’s practice is deliberately multidisciplinary, and her narrative works often unfold across paintings, works on paper, artists’ books, sculptures, and films. On view in the gallery is a set of early and important works by Iannone, including I Was Thinking Of You III (1975/2006), which consists of a large, hand-painted box, in which a monitor plays a recording of Iannone’s face taken while she masturbated. L’Adorable Trixie (1975-1978), is a major example of Iannone’s hand-drawn, collage based style, assembled from various pieces of paper and swathes of paint and mounted on board. Presented on a series of tables through the gallery, Iannone’s work from 1968, Lists IV: A Much More Detailed Than Requested Reconstruction, is a narrative sequence of 34 black and white drawings, which highlight the artist’s folkloric interest in coitus and the female form. Iannone’s work is held in the collections of numerous public institutions around the world, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France; the Museum Ludwig, Cologne; Museum Moderner Kunst Stifung Ludwig Wien, Austria; and the Living Art Museum, Iceland.
ABOUT MARILYN MINTER
Marilyn Minter (b. 1948, Shreveport, LA) lives and works in New York City. Minter’s work is concerned with representations of female sexuality, specifically as they relate to issues of contemporary feminism and sexual politics. Since the 1980s, Minter has doggedly rendered shocking images that call attention to the violent aspects of pornography, misogyny, and mass media present in American culture. Minter’s earliest work on view in the gallery is a painting on metal from 1992, which features a woman with her legs raised, closely cropped to depict her vagina tightly covered with a pair of white cotton panties. Also on view are two large format enamel paintings on metal, both
of which feature close-up depictions of vaginas, partially obscured behind foggy panes of glass. Minter continues this steamy imagery in a dye-sublimation print and a series of large format c-prints, which variously depict manicured hands grazing vaginas, lengthy pubic hair, and glowing skin. Minter has also included a photographic portrait of Miley Cyrus portrayed in a similar style, printed in an edition of fifty, the profits from which will be donate entirely to Planned Parenthood. Minter’s work is held in the collections of numerous public institutions around the world, including the Denver Art Museum, Denver; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum of Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm. In 2015, a major retrospective of Minter’s work opened at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, before traveling to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport, and the Brooklyn Museum, New York.
ABOUT CAROLEE SCHNEEMANN
Carolee Schneemann (b. 1939, Philadelphia, PA) lives and works in upstate New York. Schneemann’s work was among the earliest to investigate the relationship between the politics and erotics of gender. Her practice has been hailed for the way in which Schneemann uses her body as material to create videos, performances, and situations to address the politics of the body. On view in this exhibition is a video called Fuses, from 1966, which depicts Schneemann and her then-boyfriend James Tenney having sex. The film is notable for the way in which Schneemann reworked the very material of the film by drawing, painting, burning, and staining the celluloid to blend the genres of performance, painting, and video art. Alongside the video work, Schneemann will also display a gelatin silver print and a work on paper that were produced in conjunction with the video. From a more recent series of work, Schneemann will display a work on paper related

ABOUT BETTY TOMPKINS
Betty Tompkins (b. 1945, Washington, D.C.) lives and works in New York City. Since the late 1960s, Tompkins’s practice has focused almost entirely on photorealistic representations of genitalia and sexual acts. With near absolute precision, Tompkins variously renders vaginas and penises on large format canvases, as well as close-up depictions of both heterosexual and homosexual intercourse. Her earliest work was produced using images from vintage pornography, which she would grid off, scale up, and subsequently render on large canvases with finely a tuned airbrush. On view in the gallery is a selection of early works on paper that bear a certain psychedelic influence in their depictions of breasts, mouths, and penises, as well as two smaller gridded works on paper from Tompkins’s Cow Cunt series, which portray small cows grazing on women’s pubic hair. A grid of her more recent Pussy Paintings, each an airbrushed rendering of a different vagina
in black and white paint, will hang alongside a large format painting from 2016 entitled Ersatz Cunt Painting #1, which depicts a vagina in peachy monochrome in a panoramic format. Tompkins’s work is held in the collections of numerous public institutions around the world, including the Brooklyn Museum, New York; the Museum of the City of New York, New York; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and the Fondation d’Entreprise Frances, Senlis.

Natalie Bookchin’s films, multi-channel media installations, and online works investigate the seismic impact of the digital tools, platforms, and algorithms that determine and control the shape and texture of contemporary life. She creates dense media environments with complex soundscapes, polyphonic voices, choreographed bodies and portraits, mobile depictions of the shared self, and live streams from security webcams. Her critically acclaimed works reimagine new social arrangements that push against the constraints of network technologies and platforms.
We will be presenting two programs of her work, including the astonishing LONG STORY SHORT, winner of the Grand Prize in Paris at Cinema du Reel in 2016. LONG STORY SHORT conjures a dizzying multiplicity of frames and voices. Featuring deeply moving, unadorned testimony from a range of poverty-stricken men and women, it visualizes a collective body with overlapping subjectivities, interdependencies, and potential alliances. The screening will also include Bookchin’s latest film, NOW HE’S OUT IN PUBLIC AND EVERYONE CAN SEE, which explores the early stirrings of a darker, more nihilistic, and polarized space the internet helped to produce.
Brooklyn-based, Bookchin is considered a pioneering media artist who, since the mid-1990s, has created an extensive body of work interrogating cultural effects and the promises and perils of global technologies and ubiquitous connectivity. She has developed unique sonic and visual languages that explore precarity, subjectivity, collectivity, and the increasingly fuzzy lines between public and private space.

A riveting polyphonic documentary, this film presents a fractured narrative about an unnamed man whose racial identity is continually redrawn and contested by clusters of impassioned narrators. Bookchin’s intricately-edited and deeply political essay film is composed of fragments of found online video diaries made in the early days of the Obama era, a period many believed would be “post-racial” but instead ushered in a new era of racial discord. Bookchin explores this new landscape, one where mass media is transformed into social media and where cascades of disinformation, rumors, and insinuations spread across global electronic networks.
LONG STORY SHORT

In the moving and immersive LONG STORY SHORT, over 100 people at homeless shelters, food banks, adult literacy programs, and job training centers in L.A. and the Bay Area discuss their experiences of poverty: why they are poor, how it feels, and what they think should be done about American poverty and homelessness today. While individuals whom Bookchin filmed in separate spaces appear onscreen in their own visual spaces, mirroring the isolation of their experiences, words flow between them like a musical ensemble. Together in the film for the first time, Americans who are rarely acknowledged or listened to form a virtual collective.

An internet-age remake of Hollis Frampton’s seminal 1970 structuralist film, ZORNS LEMMA2 consists of sets of signs photographed off online webcams and arranged alphabetically in one-second intervals. In each subsequent set, one letter of the alphabet is replaced by a video clip chosen as representative of the visual language of surveillance cameras.

Composed of animated screengrabs of private security webcams found by means of a simple search engine hack, LOCATION INSECURE depicts the asynchronous time and space of the internet.

Appropriations from virtual and physical commercial spaces create temporary public space – dismal, endlessly reproduced, anonymous spaces where even creative appropriations can sometimes appear mass-produced.

TESTAMENT presents a series of collective expressions of the shared self. The series reflects on the peculiar blend of intimacy and anonymity, of the simultaneous connectivity and isolation of contemporary social relations.

Turn your walk through Times Square into a journey through a song. Artists Mendi + Keith Obadike have stretched fragments of music, poetry, stories, and myths across the pedestrian plazas and surrounding blocks in all four cardinal directions, for you to discover whether you’re exploring the neighborhood or simply on your way to work. The result is Compass Song, an app-based public sound artwork inspired by Times Square’s rich history as the Crossroads of the World. Compass Song was commissioned by and created in residence with Times Square Arts.
As you turn on the app, plug in your headphones and walk through Times Square, a voice will accompany your wanderings with poems about searching for freedom, reflections on navigating the city, and cross-cultural myths about the cardinal directions, woven through with quotes from and reworkings of Walk With Me, the African-American spiritual turned Civil Rights freedom song. The voice in Compass Song is always underscored by a drone, a unique harmony that translates the latitude and longitude data for Times Square into sound and modulates as you walk north, south, east, or west. Interspersed with this are vocal performances of the sounds of Times Square, as if the city itself is singing to you.
Compass Song is centered at Duffy Square, with sounds spread between 49th Street to the north, 42nd Street to the south, 8th Avenue to the west, and 6th Avenue to the east. Let the map guide you within the active soundscape to seek out more of the audio experience, or wander through the district using only the app’s compass to happen upon divergent sonic elements.

A special kick-off performance exemplifying the Compass Song experience will take place on Wednesday, July 12th on the Broadway Pedestrian Plaza between 45th and 46th Street. Sixteen performers will vocally recreate the city’s sounds as they hear them and then begin singing the freedom song Walk With Me as they divide into four ambulatory groups, each group walking off in one of the cardinal directions. The audience is encouraged to follow whichever group they choose, finding their own individual viewing and listening experience across the landscape of Times Square. Like the app itself, it is an invitation to meditate on the process of finding yourself at a crossroads and choosing your path.

The Ray Johnson Estate and Matthew Marks Gallery are pleased to announce that Ray Johnson will be extended until August 18th. The exhibition features almost forty works spanning three decades and is accompanied by a fully illustrated 192-page catalogue with an essay by Brad Gooch.
Johnson’s collage works, which often incorporate celebrity images cut from magazines, are considered among the earliest examples of Pop art. He exhibited them at galleries and museums in the 1960s and 1970s, but starting in the late 1970s, with only a few exceptions, he stopped showing his work publicly.
It was during Johnson’s reclusive final decades that he created most of the works in this exhibition, building them up in layers of magazine clippings, found photographs, and handmade marks. He worked in a nonlinear way, often setting aside a collage for years before picking it up, adding to it, and setting it aside again. This layering can be seen in the works’ content too, with images and phrases (such as “mouth of the month,” “Janis Joplin’s mother’s hat,” and “I love you Alice B. Toklas”) joined together in associative chains that are equal parts comedy and poetry.
Johnson seemed to build a world within his work, filling it with a peculiar mix of celebrities, writers, and members of the New York art world. A partial list from this exhibition alone: David Bowie, William Burroughs, John Cage, Salvador Dalí, Candy Darling, James Dean, Jacques Derrida, Agnes Gund, Arsenio Hall, Peter Hujar, Jasper Johns, Sophia Loren, Agnes Martin, Louise Nevelson, River Phoenix, Paloma Picasso, Lou Reed, Gertrude Stein, and Shirley Temple. The 14th Big E Festival and Elvis Tribute Artists Competition will take place August 4 & 5 at the Main Street Event Facility, 215 S. Main Street in Cornelia, GA. This year commemorates the 40th anniversary of the king’s death.
Kicking off the festivities, returning champion Eric Schneider will give a special performance featuring his renditions of both Elvis and Conway Twitty.
Hendricks Coates will warm the stage starting at 7pm on Friday.

Established in 1989 by the City of Hiroshima, site of the first atomic bombing in human history, the Hiroshima Art Prize aims to appeal to a wider world about the “Spirit of Hiroshima,” which seeks everlasting world peace, through contemporary art. The prize is awarded once every three years, and this year we present an exhibition by Mona Hatoum, winner of the 10th Hiroshima Art Prize, at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art.
Mona Hatoum was born in Beirut to an exiled Palestinian family in 1952. While on a short visit to London in 1975, she was forced to remain in England after civil war broke out in Lebanon. Since then, Hatoum has created performances, videos, installations and sculptures that deal with a variety of social contradictions, such as the hardships of displaced people, political oppression, and gender issues based on her experience of double exile as a Palestinian.
This exhibition, Hatoum’s first comprehensive solo show in Japan, will introduce both important works from the past as well as new works that the artist created after accepting the prize and visiting Hiroshima. With new works that make reference to Hiroshima, this exhibition promises to inspire further universal concern over one of the most tragic events in human history.

Hiroshima’s experience brings to mind a very sad and low point in human history. Laurie Anderson is best known as a performance artist who uses music, technology, handmade instruments, words, film, actors and props to tell her tales. Although Anderson describes herself as a “story-teller,” her performances are rich in visual imagery and have often been presented in art galleries and museums. ART/new york has been a fan of Anderson’s work for some time and on this program we see an exhibition of early pieces taped in 1984 at the Queens Museum and a 1998 installation at Artists Space in New York City. Included are two lengthy interviews with Anderson: one in her downtown loft and a second one in 1999 shortly before her performance of “Moby Dick” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Also included is an interview with RoseLee Goldberg, a performance art historian and author of a recent Abrams book on Anderson.

Linda Stein’s fast-paced and inspiring lecture merges pop culture icons with images of ten extraordinary women from the time of the Holocaust who faced brutal oppression and saved many lives. Stein is a feminist activist-artist addressing issues concerning strength, power and justice in contemporary culture. She uses her art as a starting point to spark the audience’s imagination to find that personal place to feel a most authentic self. With over 150 moving and still images, Stein takes her audience on a half-hour journey from Persecution to Protection, from the Bully to the Moral Exemplar.
You are welcome to bring lunch to eat during the lecture.
