The summer issue of Gastronomica Magazine includes a 2-page artist portfolio of artwork by FF alumn Stephanie Brody-Lederman. Gastronomica is a multidisciplinary magazine, published quarterly by The University of California Press. The journal explores the history, representation and cultural impact of food with no nutritional guidelines, no lifestyle articles and no filler. Hard Copy is an exhibition that formally and conceptually revolves around painting. With the plethora of painting exhibitions of the last two years as well as critical writing in magazines and journals concerning the “death of painting,” “the return to painting” and other reassessments of the medium, Hard Copy takes a more ironic stance towards painting by fusing formal aspects of figuration, abstraction, decoration, interior design, as well as ready-made photography into a cohesive installation.
Hard Copy thematically mines the media, sensationalism and the American obsession for celebrities whose iconic status has been further propelled by recent falls from grace. Yet the paired figures of celebrities are given an idiosyncratic air of respectability as well as notoriety, for the paintings simultaneously refer to academic portraiture, film studio publicity stills as well as paparazzi snapshots. Converging on the canvas, these disparate forms of visual culture culled from both the “high and low” are wry commentary on the culture of complacency and the complacency of culture. The paintings are juxtaposed with works on paper that mimic templates for books on decoration and interior design; manuals of “aesthetic lifestyles” that are then commercially sold en masse to the public. The artist was involved in this trade and their re-contextualization in the exhibition situates them somewhere between wallpaper, mural painting, installation and non-linear story-boards. This composite of ostensible do-it-yourself ephemera that has appeared in the equivalency of Martha Stewart-like catalogs for “better living,” consists of an array of patterns, ornaments, motifs and arabesques amounting to a pastiche of suburban interior decoration. With serendipity akin to Andy Warhol’s pre-Pop commercial art, the works on paper serve as foil for formal and conceptual strategies that counterpoint the surface transparency of the exhibition’s overall subject matter.

Feral Childe presents SHERWOOD FOREST, a Gesamtkunstwerk teeming with milky frauleins, downy faunlets and busy woodcutters in a multi-sensory micro-terrain comprised of equal parts mediaeval village, Canterbury Tales and Bruegel landscape. Passing through shadowy thickets and clearings, the intrepid visitor will happen upon Feral Childe’s Fall 2003 Collection underfoot everywhere, sprouting from a wayward haystack, fermenting in the mead tent, and surfacing from a mulchy pond. Come drink mead and be merry at the opening reception of SHERWOOD FOREST at Landing on Saturday September 6 from 8PM to Midnight. The exhibition will remain on view through September.
Landing is a unique venue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn featuring one-of-a-kind designs, custom furniture, jewelry, and art. Landing hosts monthly art events where artists/designers launch new ideas and projects. Following the exhibition at Landing, Sherwood Forest travels to HaNNA, a Tokyo gallery space. In association with the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec’s exhibition “Body Doubles: The Clothing of Contemporary Art”, Devora Neumark and Louise Dubreuil invite you to participate in this tickling and potentially ticklish experience. Initiation into the Brigade of the Laughing Warriors is a seriously playful process. This participatory durational performance is an invitation to explore the path of the peaceful warrior in laughter, in silence, maybe even with a few tears.
Robert R. Provine’s recent publication “Laughter: A Scientific Investigation” explores how laughter is a universal and often contagious social experience with reputed health benefits. He writes: “Just as social interactions are the key to understanding tickling, tickling is essential to understanding the associated social vocalization of laughter. Tickling is not a footnote in the story of laughter but at the very heart of it.”

Heidi House Arneson is a performing artist renowned for her one-woman shows, a powerful blend of comedy, poetry and quirky American characters. Her work has been produced by Franklin Furnace and Dixon Place in New York, the Cleveland Performance Art Festival, the Bug in Denver, N.A.M.E. Gallery in Chicago, Ace Arts in Winnipeg, and nearly every venue in the Twin Cities, including the Walker, the Southern, the Jungle, Red Eye, the Weisman and Patrick’s Cabaret. She is a recipient of the Bush Artist Fellowship, Franklin Furnace Emerging Artist Award, and Core Alumni of the Playwrights’ Center. Her plays include HOMELAND INSECURITY, PREHANSEL & POSTGRETEL, MARY MARGARET PLEASE APPEAR, SMALL BARBIE and DEGRADE SCHOOL. She teaches weekly performance workshops at Patrick’s Cabaret, where people of all levels learn to write and perform their own works for the stage.

LEONIE WILSON recently moved to Brooklyn from Edinburgh in Scotland. Plays trumpet, has worked with numerous jazz/big bands.
ALAN SONDHEIM works in sound, text, video, image, internet, etc. He thinks his early records with ESP-DISK were a disaster. He promises to do better this time.
The Flying Saucer Cafe series pares up new media artists with poets who instead of giving a reading present a talk relating to their poetry and ideas. We will be having readings the first Tuesday of each month (September an exception). Please come and support us!

Fast, funny and furious, Tim Miller’s new show US ricochets between Miller’s love affair since childhood with Broadway musicals to an exploration of home, exile and the injustices gay people face in the good ol’ USA.
US is a hilarious and pissed-off exploration of these most American contradictions, as the piece careens from the 8 year old boy who did stripteases with the musical Gypsy on the record player, to memories of a ten year old’s plan to flee to Canada to escape the war in Vietnam, to a tongue-in-cheek guide explaining how NOT to be angry, and a surreal wedding day tug-of-war at the edge of America as the Niagara Falls rushes between Tim’s legs!

An Exhibition of Political Book Art
In every era books have been created to influence people’s actions and decisions. In ancient times the priests of Egypt made books that controlled the belief system of their civilization and secured the power of themselves and their Pharaoh. During the Inquisition the Catholic Church controlled what books could exist. The spread of literacy through printing advanced the Reformation in the 16th Century as books changed the way people thought and shifted political power. Books fomented the French and American Revolutions in the 18th Century. In the 19th Century political cartoons were a powerful force.
During the 20th Century artists took to the presses, and worked to change the way we view the world. The manifestos of the Constructivists and the Futurists shook the pillars of accepted Art. The Bauhaus artists promoted their visions through books. By the last quarter of the century, thousands of individual artists were producing books to express themselves. Our current exhibition opens with a reception on Thursday, September 25 from 6 – 8pm. It presents the work of over 40 artists who use the book form to incite the viewer to action. Some of the works focus on the environment, others on war, racism, or personal issues like sex and gender relations. The works are not just intended to inform or entertain-the artists want you to DO SOMETHING!
Featuring works by Seana Biondolillo, Gaza Bowen, Kyle Bravo, Sue Coe & Holly Metz, Critical Art Ensemble, John Fekner, Guerilla Art Action Group, Davd Homer, Nora Ligorano & Marshall Reese, Barbara Kruger, Tuli Kupferberg, Miranda Maher, Scott McCarney, Josh McPhee, Dona Ann McAdams, Louise Neaderland, Joseph Nechvatal, Gilles Peress, Roxy Paine, Stephan Petroff, Adrian Piper, Susan Rotolo, Annie Sprinkle, Melissa Shook, David Thorne, Jean Toche, Larry Walczak, Carrie Mae Weems, John Wood and others.

Bawdy sibling duo the WAU WAU SISTERS preside over the event with trapeze and circus tricks, acrobatics, original songwriting and impure thoughts.
