Mark Berghash, FF Alumn, will be showing two works in THE ART OF AGING, curated by Laura Kruger. Berghash a conceptual portraitist shows a triptych entitled The Age Hurdle and a six image Polaroid based work entitled Disintegration. Both works are from his current project entitled Until Death Do We Part, a self portrait.
The exhibition is at the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion Museum, One West 4th Street, NY,NY 10012 and will be showing until June 25, 2004.

EAI presents a live performance event and video screening featuring three new art collectives who re-activate the lo-fi. Cory Arcangel and Alex Galloway from Beige and Radical Software Group will demonstrate the subversive genre of video game hacking. Video work by Forcefield and a live music performance from Termination Gnome galvanizes obsolete analogue signal-processors and defunct electronics. With psychedelic ebullience, Paper Rad synthesizes and re-stages popular material from the Internet, television, video games, and advertising. An analogous era of analogue synthesis is bridged by rarely screened video from technical pioneers of the 1960s and 70s.

BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange offers Writing & Performance Workshops For Adults this Fall with Lois Weaver and Pam Booker. Get your creative juices flowing this fall at BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange with two new creative writing and performance workshops for adults. To register call (718) 832-0018.
Performer, writer and Obie Award winning Lois Weaver will offer the performance/writing workshop MAKING WORK to be held Saturday & Sunday October 18 & 19 from 2:00-5:00pm. This practical workshop is designed to create performance from the ordinary details and extra-ordinary fantasies of our lives. Personal story, popular culture, and gender identity will be used to create a character, some text and a 3-5 minute performance. This impulse-based workshop will be dedicated to establishing a vocabulary for both physical and verbal impulse work and to re-establish a sense of ‘play’ to learn to rely on the body as a source of ideas. Lois Weaver is a co-founder and director of the Split Britches Company. She was the Artistic Director of Gay Sweatshop, a founding member of Spiderwoman Theatre, and co-founder of WOW, a lesbian performance space in New York City. Lois won a Village Voice OBIE award for her ensemble performance in Belle Reprieve (co-production with Bloolips). Most recently she edited and directed Peggy Shaw’s new solo work, To My Chagrin and she teaches independently in the U. S. and is a Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Performance Practice in Queen Mary, University of London.
MEMOIRS FROM THE MIDDLE taught by playwright, Pamela Booker, will be held for three Saturdays October 25, November 1, 8 2:00-5:00pm. Ordinary lives have an unexpected number of life’s “moments”. This writing workshop is designed to support a safe space environment for “mid life” students to utilize those autobiographical memories through a focused narrative. An artist in residence at Tribeca Performing Arts, Pamela Booker’s work have been staged by the Naked Angels Theatre Lab, HERE Arts Center and has been presented by Karen Finley at The Culture Project, Voices from the Edge Festival at New Perspectives Theater and Dixon Place, where she is also curator for the HomoText Literary Series. She received an M.A. from the Gallatin School at NYU in Dramatic Writing and Performance Studies. Current book projects include memoirs on fathers and daughters and on her post-modern grandmothers.

This event is free and open to the public
Is it live or Memorex? Is it real or is it virtual? Just like the mirror in Alice’s looking-glass world, the boundaries between the real and the simulated are less and less distinct. Exploring these boundaries, artists and technologists are utilizing new technologies and new interactive paradigms to redefine the very notion of artist and viewer, of character and narrative. In many cases the art experience is no longer a passive one, but requires active participation. How does interactive, responsive work shift a viewer’s relationship to narrative and character? How are character, time and space altered in these kinds of works? What are some new methods for conveying narrative and character in non-linear and interactive forms of art, entertainment,and communications?
Coinciding with the final weekend of ‘Engaging Characters’ (an art exhibition on view at the Art Interactive gallery through October 5th), this evening explores these questions, showcasing the work and research of NYC-based artists Toni Dove and Julia Heyword, and MIT Media Lab Professors Bruce Blumberg and Joe Paradiso. Join us on Thursday evening, Oct 2 at 7:00pm for this unique opportunity to hear from and meet some of the artists and researchers who are redefining the notion of interactivity, character, and dialogue.
PANELISTS:
Bruce Blumberg is an Associate Professor of the Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab. He is head of the Synthetic Characters Group as well as co-director of the Digital Life consortium at the Media Lab. He is a frequent lecturer in courses on ALife techniques for interactive characters.
Toni Dove is a NYC-based artist/independent producer who works primarily with electronic media, including virtual reality and interactive video installations, performance and DVD-ROMs, that engage viewers in responsive and immersive narrative environments.
Julia Heyward is a NYC-based artist whose work centers on the orchestration of music, image, and language through the forms of multi-media and live performance. She has written, directed, and performed numerous pieces in the US and internationally.
Joe Paradiso is Associate Professor and Sony Career Development Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab. He directs the Responsive Environments group and co-directs the Things That Think Consortium at the Media Lab. An expert on sensing technology, Paradiso has developed a wide variety of systems that track human activity, using electric field sensing, microwaves, laser ranging, passive and active sonar, piezoelectrics, and resonant electromagnetic tags.
MODERATOR:
Kathy Brew is an independent media producer, curator, and educator who curated Engaging Characters, now showing at Art Interactive through October 5th. She has recently completed a video with her collaborator, Roberto Guerra, for the MIT Media Lab on an exhibition that originated there entitled, ID/entity: Portraits in the 21st Century, that will be released as a DVD this fall.

Located in Central Square Cambridge, Art Interactive was founded in 2001 by Emanuel Lewin and Irene Buchine. Its arts advisory board includes such well known arts professionals as Joe Paradiso of MIT’s Media Lab, George Fifield, Director of the Boston Cyber Arts Festival, Joseph Ketner, Director of the Waltham-based Rose Art Museum, and Kathryn Brew, NYC-based independent producer, curator, and educator. 6. Benita Abrams/Ron Littke, FF Alumns, awarded NYSCA grant for new video
Ron Littke and Benita Abrams (R&B Video) have been awarded a NYSCA decentralization grant through the Delaware Valley Arts Association for a video documentary about Narrowsburg, NY.
The documentary will attempt to tell the history of the hamlet of Narrowsburg by way of their own house, a 150-year-old cottage on the banks of Little Lake Erie, which the artists believe was used originally as a shed for ice harvesters in the late 19th through early 20th century. Aptly named the “icehouse” by its current owners, it doesn’t exist on any map of the area, and seems to have been part of a huge land redistribution by Sullivan County real estate moguls a la early 1800’s. Built in 1850, the icehouse has been a residence for most of its existence, but it it is believed that it may have been placed there by the Erie RR to supply ice for its passenger trains. Through interviews with local historians and assorted town residents, Ron and Benita will attempt to get at the truth behind the icehouse, and while they’re at it, discover some interesting history about Narrowsburg.
Come and join the other residents of Western Sullivan County as Ron and Benita screen their work-in-progress at county venues sometime in December. Locations and schedules to be announced.

Pablo Picasso and Kurt Schwitters were not only among the great artists of the twentieth century but were formidable and transgressively experimental poets – Schwitters for most of his life, Picasso from the mid-1930s to the late 1950s. Jerome Rothenberg and Pierre Joris have been engaged over the last decade in extended translations from the writings of both artists. This reading – with the participation of Anne Tardos as co-perfomer – will bring a selection of Schwitters’ and Picasso’s works into performance – a reminder too that Schwitters, who will be heard on a 1931 recording, was himself a major pioneer of performance art and sound poetry. Jerome Rothenberg’s most recent book of poems, A Book of Witness, his twelfth from New Directions, has just been published. He is the author of over seventy books of poetry and groundbreaking assemblages of experimental and traditional poetry such as Technicians of the Sacred and Poems for the Millennium. Recent translated books include Schwitters’ Poems Performance Pieces Proses Plays Poetics (with Pierre Joris), Nezval’s Antilyrik & Other Poems (with Milos Sovak), and Lorca’s Suites. Scheduled for 2004 are Picasso’s Burial of the Count of Orgaz, & Other Poems (also with Joris) and Writing Through, a selection of Rothenberg’s translations and related writings.
Anne Tardos is a poet, a visual artist, and a composer. She is the author of the multilingual performance work Among Men, which was produced by the (WDR) West German Radio, in Cologne. Her books of multilingual poems and graphics include The Dik-dik’s Solitude (Granary Books, New York City, 2002) and Uxudo (Berkeley / Oakland: Tuumba Press/O Books, 1999). Examples of her visual texts were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Neuberger Museum. She has lectured and performed her works widely in the United States and Europe.

NIPAF (Nippon International Performance Art Festival) started in 1993 in Nagano, as first international performance art festival in Asia. Director, Seiji Shimoda is internationally well known artist, and some other Japanese artists in several cities are working now for NIPAF as non profit artists organization. Since 1996, NIPAF started “Asian Performance Art Series” in summer season. Through past 10 years, NIPAF had invited 182 foreign artists from 37 countries. For almost of them, this NIPAF invitation is their first experience to Japan. In this year 2003, we both had finished in March “10th NIPAF’03” in 5 cities in Japan, and in summer “8th Asian Performance Series” in 4 cities in Japan.Performance art history in Asia is not so long enough, except some countries like Japan. But through some Asian artists’ experience of NIPAF, some artists had started their own international performance art festival. Now performance art in Asia became strong movement as one symbol of contemporary art development.This tour’s artists are from Japan, China, Taiwan, and Philippines. Japanese artists are main member of NIPAF and Asian artists are also organizing performance art event in their town. Almost Asian artists never been Europe before, this is their first visiting. We all hope this trip will be good opportunity to understand each other really deeply.

Marja Samson, FF Alumn, opens Chibitini on Clinton Street, LES Performance artist and FF Visionary Marja Samson opened the Kitchen Club on Prince Street over a decade ago, serving food with European and Japanese flavors. Now she has opened Chibitini, a sake and dumpling bar, at 63 Clinton Street, in the new restaurant row of the Lower East Side. One of their offerings is a dessert dumpling of apple and chocolate! b. In 2002, I was asked to create music for the GuitarBot, a robotic electric slide guitar created by the LEMUR collective (League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots). My response was the 4-minute EMERGENCY BOT TV THEME, intended to be 1 movement of a 30-minute suite.
I have just received word of a substantial commissioning grant from the American Composers Forum (with support from the Jerome Foundation). Harvestworks and LEMUR will co-present the completed work for the whole LEMUR orchestra in Spring 2004. Stay tuned!!

I was selected as one of the designers participating in the next ‘Open Up’ in Williamsburg. The event promises to be interesting, please come and join us in Brooklyn. It is a good chance to walk around the neighborhood while looking at new experimental and professional design.
