Barbara Hammer, FF Alumn, screens RESISTING PARADISE at Makor Cinema, 35 W. 67 th St. on September 9 at 7 ($15)and 9:30 ($9). Hammer will introduce both screenings and have Q &A following the 7pm screening. Synopsis of film: The Mediterranean town of Cassis, France, known for its perfect light, was home to Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard during WWII. French and German resistance fighters used the port to help countless people, including Walter Benjamin, escape. Renowned film artist Barbara Hammer recounts the stories of brave individuals and offers a meditation on the value of art in the time of war.

Each participant in her two-day workshop receives an individual make-over, complete with facial hair, and learns to take up space, walk, eat, pick up objects, smile… as a man. The workshop culminates in a visit to a public place, where you’ll test your new identity. Outrageous and fun!

Several months ago a group of artists including Trisha Brown, Elizabeth Streb, Lisa Kron, Linda Chapman, Mary Patierno started working together to organize an event to help make a difference in the upcoming election. The result is called Joyful November and it’s going to be at the Great Hall at Cooper Union on September 21st. The first part of the event is a benefit perfomance with performers like Lou Reed, Bill T. Jones, Will Power, Mark Crispin Miller, Carmelita Tropicana, Maggie Moore, Lisa Kron and the Lynne Cheney Players. Proceeds willl go directly to benefit Downtown for Democracy which is doing great work getting out the vote in swing states among other things (check out dowtownfordemocracy.org). After the performance, representatives of various organizations will be at tables throughout the hall ready to sign up volunteers. So you can find an organization you like and sign yourself up. There will be a party vibe provided by DJ Bald Bastard — and refreshments. It’s going to be a great event. If you’ve been despairing about how to make a difference in this election this is the event for you.

8. David Medalla, FF Alumn, at Liverpool Biennial, Sept 18, 6 pm
David Medalla, FF alumnus, will perform the first of his series of new live improvisations entitled “Auguries in Autumn”, to mark the opening of the Museum MAN Berlin exhibition, directed by Adam Nankervis, at the start of the Liverpool Biennial, on Saturday, September 18, 2004, at 6 p.m. This new work by the Filipino artist was inspired partly by Ernest Fraenkel’s interpretation of Stephane Mallarme’s poem “Un coup de des n’abolira pas le hasard’ (“A throw of the dice does not abolish chance”) and Medalla’s own interpretation of the esoteric references in Mallarme’s poem. As in many of Medalla’s performances, the participatory element will play an important part; in this particular case, he will invite members of the audience to play with him a game of dice, betting their secrets and dreams against Medalla’s own secrets and dreams. The pair of dice Medalla will use in the performance comes from Las Vegas and are in the form of salt and pepper cellars. The “Auguries” will be in the form of sybilline utterances by one of Medalla’s own heteronyms, “La Profeta Divina”, who first made an appearance in Copenhagen a few years ago. Medalla’s performance will take place inside the assemblage-installation created by Adam Nankervis inside a Georgian house in Liverpool. The assemblage-installation consists of selected items from the permanent collection of Museum MAN Berlin, which Adam Nankervis founded in 1996 when he moved to East Berlin and was inspired initially by the photograph of an unknown man Adam found inside an apartment at Prenzlauer Berg. Museum MAN Berlin is a lived-in museum, devoted to the enigmas of anonymous persons as well as to the “flotsam and jetsem” of Adam Nankervis’ own extensive travels and numerous performances in New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Venice, Honolulu, Lisbon, and other places. The Museum MAN Berlin’s exhibition will be one of the highlights of this year’s Liverpool Biennial. David Medalla’s performance there is open to the public.

Karen Finley, FF Alumn, officially inaugurates the new Collective: Unconscious theater complex in Tribeca with, GEORGE & MARTHA. This broad two-character political satire combines the real-life antics of George Dubya and Martha Stewart with Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” duo (and a touch of George and Martha Washington). This co-production between Collective: Unconscious and P.S. 122 stars Finley as Martha and newcomer Neal Medlyn as George. George & Martha is set during a secret rendezvous in a hotel room in New York City during the Republican National Convention. Here, they air their embittered legal and political woes into the intimacy of their private relationship. The tragedies and personal triumphs of these self-created icons become intertwined in their symbiotic need to be loved.

Gigantic ArtSpace [GAS] takes a small look at GIGANTICISM – oversized consumption practices; the amplifying power of the media and its exaggeration of the spectacle; a supersized consumer society; the implications of scientific inquiry; global income inequality; ever greater computing power and digital storage capabilities; and spatial and perceptual expansions on land, in water, in the atmosphere, in outer space, inner space and cyber space. Showing Your Stuff
You have to wonder what Harley Spiller’s parents thought of his collections while he was growing up. One thing is certain: they didn’t throw them out. And now Mr. Spiller, a k a Inspector Collector, has provided an apt retort to exasperated adults who wish their children would just chuck all those marbles, Beanie Babies, Pokémon cards or whatever: “Hey, Mom and Dad, it could all go in a museum some day!”
Mr. Spiller, who has been acquiring everything from bottle caps to straws to subway tokens (now MetroCards) since childhood, has his own show, “Inspector Collector’s Cool Stuff,” at the Queens Museum of Art. With 18 of his collections and one borrowed one – pencils from the Revolutionary War – it illustrates how humble objects chronicle the habits and beliefs of cultures.
Consider Mr. Spiller’s Chinese menus. They demonstrate that this cuisine is global – he has examples from Greenland and Iceland – and they are case studies in how countries view one another. The display includes comments from Chinese who examined the menus, noting how some designs reflected racial stereotypes or Western expectations.
Mr. Spiller has filled the show with intriguing questions that the exhibits answer, like “What is ullage?” (The air space inside a bottle.) He has also created a free catalog (“Stuff”) and a contest that asks youngsters to identify six mystery objects. (Those making one or more correct guesses win prizes.) The answers will be revealed on Oct. 10, Junior Collectors’ Day, an invitation for children to display their own collections. (Applications are available at the exhibition or from inspector-collector@nyc.rr.com.) So don’t throw anything out.
“Inspector Collector’s Cool Stuff,” through Oct. 24 at the Queens Museum of Art, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, (718) 592-9700. Wednesdays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 5 p.m. Suggested admission: $5; 65+ and children, $2.50; under 5, free.
