The New York Times reported on Friday July 15th that the Harvard University Art Museums have acquired a large collection of Fluxus materials amassed by Barbara and Peter Moore. The collection includes examples of Fluxus work by FF Alumns Christo, Claes Oldenburg, Yoko Ono, and others. Congratulations to all involved.

CLOSING PARTY for Comix Ex Machina, 8:00 PM
This is your last chance to crank, flash and whiz your way through some truly fantastic pieces! Following the comics-as-installation theme of our 2004 summer show Cartünnel, Comix Ex Machina exhibit looks back to archaic technologies like Stereoscopy and the automated mechanical entertainment of the turn of the previous century. It also draws upon the aesthetics of interactive and contemporary science museum displays. In Comix Ex Machina, each artist will build an installation with graphic as well as mechanical components that presents a sequence of images to the viewer in an interactive setting, making the story part of an overall physical experience. The pieces will be engaging and inclusive, inviting viewers to be active participants in the art.

Doug Skinner, FF Alumn, In addition to his work as a visual artist, Doug Skinner is a translator, lecturer, actor, ventriloquist, and musician. He has written several scores for theater and dance, most conspicuously for Bill Irwin’s ‘The Regard of Flight’, which enjoyed a Broadway run and a spot on PBS’s ‘Great Performances’. The Upgrade! presents Diane Ludin
August 4, 7:30pm
The Upgrade! New York is delighted to present Diane Ludin for a second talk. Ludin gave her first Upgrade! talk in July 2000 and this Thursday she will present two projects: Memoryflesh 2.0, a Turbulence commission about the Human Genome and iBPE, her Patent database project. This event is open to the public and free of charge.
An artist and writer, Diane Ludin has been using the internet as a resource since 1996. She draws together voices of intimacy, confession and fragmented illusion. Her collections focus on the changing nature of “embodiment”, representation and communication as determined by publicly available information. She has exhibited both her solo and collaborative works in the US and abroad. Commissioned works include projects for The Walker Art Center, Franklin Furnace, Turbulence.org and the Whitney Museum’s Artport. Collaborative performances and broadcasts include work with The Electronic Disturbance Theater, FAKESHOP, Las Fantasmas, Prema Murthy, Francesca DiRimini, Ricardo Dominguez and Agnese Trocchi.
The Upgrade! is an international network of gatherings of new media practitioners. There are currently Upgrade gatherings in New York, Boston, Montreal, Munich, Seoul, Tel Aviv and Vancouver with groups in Scotland and Oklahoma City coming soon. 7. Doug Skinner, FF Alumn, in “Fortean Times”
My article “Doubting Tiffany” can be perused in the gala 200th issue of the “Fortean Times.” Tiffany Thayer founded the Fortean Society — along with Theodore Dreiser, Ben Hecht, Booth Tarkington, Alexander Woollcott and other lively souls — in 1932 to promote the work of philosopher/satirist Charles Fort, and to encourage “dissent from any and all dogma.” The article covers the history of the society, its journal “Doubt,” and Thayer’s career as a writer and actor, including rare stills from his only film role and capsule summaries of all of his books. A sample of Thayer in full cry: “Respect for authority is the most paralyzing, subversive, degrading, enslaving, retarding, and completely damning bit of mental conditioning that can be imposed upon human beings.”
The “Fortean Times” is distributed mostly in the UK, but can be found at larger newsstands and bookstores.
