Franklin Furnace’s Goings On
A special Goings On for Friday, August 1st

Franklin Furnace announces the departure of Tiffany Ludwig, Webmistress and Producer of Virtual and Physical Programs from 1999 – 2003.

Tiffany Ludwig, Franklin Furnace’s Webmistress and Producer of Virtual and Physical Programs, is leaving Franklin Furnace as of July 31, 2003.

Franklin Furnace is deeply grateful to Tiffany Ludwig for building the organization’s demonstration online database, The Unwritten History Project. Under the direction of Ms. Ludwig, this pilot project creates the online framework for documenting Franklin Furnace’s entire 27-year history online in a fully searchable, media enhanced database. This project, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts’ Heritage and Preservation program and NYFA’s TechTAP program, enabled Franklin Furnace to engage Rick Rinehart of the Conceptual and Intermedia Arts Online (CIAO) consortium (www.bampfa.Berkeley.edu/ciao). http://www.franklinfurnace.org/database.

Partnership with CIAO since 1998 resulted in new opportunities for Franklin Furnace, including the publication of an essay by Ms. Ludwig in “Permanence Through Change: The Variable Media Approach,” edited by Alain Depocas, Jon Ippolito, and Caitlin Jones, Guggenheim Museum Publications and The Daniel Langlois Foundation for Art, Science, and Technology. Published this year, Ms. Ludwig’s contribution describes her role in Franklin Furnace’s efforts to archive and preserve their videotape collection and live art on the Internet.

Over the past four years, Ms. Ludwig has produced key Franklin Furnace projects including the online and physical production and coordination for The Future of the Present series, Franklin Furnace’s residency program for the production of Live Art of the Internet; coordination of the grant giving program the Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art; facilitation of the annual Peer Panel Review; and the design and creation of Franklin Furnace’s new public face, launched in 2001, Franklin Furnace’s 25th Birthday.

Upon leaving Franklin Furnace, Ms. Ludwig will continue her work as a technology consultant and web developer for arts organizations and artists (http://www.tiffanyludwig.com), as well as pursue her own artworks, including her collaborative project, Two Girls Working (http://www.twogirlsworking.com), which will be presenting a paper at the College Art Association’s 2004 Conference in Seattle and conducting a workshop at the SUNY New Paltz conference on Feminism and Social Action in October 2003. Their project “Trappings” will be exhibited at the Jersey City Museum in 2004.

Taking her place at Franklin Furnace is Dolores Zorreguieta. Ms Zorreguieta is an Argentinean artist who moved to New York in 1992. She was first introduced to Franklin Furnace in 1994 when she was selected to exhibit her installation, “Wounds,” as part of Franklin Furnace’s emerging artists installations program. The following year, Franklin Furnace invited her to be a panelist in the selection of artists for the same program. She has exhibited her work in the United States and Argentina. Most recently, she had a solo show in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires. In 1997 and through a gradual process, she started exploring digital media. In 2000 she was awarded a grant from The New York Foundation for the Arts in the digital art category. In 2002, Ms Zorreguieta was invited to create The Digital Lab for the After School Program at the Middle Collegiate Church. She teaches digital applications to whoever needs it in an effort to counteract the economic gap that leaves so many people computer illiterate. Her work can be seen at http://www.sheisanartist.com.
