“ This Delicate Monster” created by Michelle Handelman
“This Delicate Monster” is a multi-media pop fable inspired by Charles Baudelaire’s Flowers of Evil, a book of poems succulent and darkly suave as 19th-century Paris and Baudelaire himself. Michelle Handelman transposes the Flowers of Evil into a garden feast of excess and desire with multiple projections, live performances, organic foods and cocktails, creating a haunting and hallucinatory fragmented narrative best described as a cross between a music video, a pagan ritual and a Vogue fashion shoot gone terribly wrong. Collaborating with couture costume designer Garo Sparo and a cast of performers, Handelman visits the abyss of fear and the sublime – implicating the viewer every step of the way. A visceral experience not to be missed.
Michelle Handelman, video artist, performer and director of the critically acclaimed feature documentary BloodSisters (1999 Bravo Award) invites the viewer into her invented world of This Delicate Monster – a benevolent nightmare creating a new spin on the human condition – an abject space where meaning falls apart in a persistent and macabre performance of endurance.

“Miracles in Reverse” plus two new works in progress
July 27th at 8:30 pm at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center
part of the Scanners: NY Video Festival.
Julia Heyward -Heyward will be performing with elements of her large scale triptych “Nothing Random Access Memory” which includes the completed interactive version of “Miracles in Reverse” as well as work-in-progress versions of part two, “Points of View,” a series of ‘faux’ windows (including the artist’s own bedroom window, which looks out onto Cortland Alley, an often used film location featuring a continuous stream of Hollywood simulated violence) and part three “The Gabriel Frequency,” featuring the Archangel Gabriel the middleman of monotheism and the source of much of the conflicting revelations that to this day is at the core of the various infidel cleansings. All parts of the triptych deal with trauma and memory — some from a local/personal perspective others from a global/mythological perspective. Heyward will be performing with musician/collaborators Greg Smith, Mike Barron, Michael Kott and Collier Hyams. “Miracles in Reverse” was directed and designed by Heyward with music by Heyward and Greg Smith with Michael Kott, Dwight Loop and Greg Bowman; additional sound design by Don Christensen.The lingo prgamming is by Aishwarya Saigal.
This work was produced by generous grants from The Rockefeller Foundation’s Film/Video/Multimedia Fellowship , The Rockefeller Foundation’s Multi Arts Production Grant, The John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, The Greenwall Foundation, The New York State Council on the Arts

“Miracles in Reverse” is an interactive DVD-ROM an audio visual album… a hybrid of a family album and a music album. “Miracles” is structurally and conceptually composed of loops ( music and visuals ). These designs explore the rhythms of the vicious cycles of associative and obsessive thoughts as well as other mantras. Within the programming design there is room for interpretation in the sense that the performer can literally play her ‘life movies’ like a musical instrument which evokes sounds and pictures. The narrative is centered around trauma and memory consistently traveling between the personal and the global with a kind of slippery Jungian spirit dipping into the collective unconscious, quantum theory, animism, neuroarcheology, and history reflexively. How we survive the memories, how we distort the memories, and how we store and access the memories gets equal time in this life’s reflections .

3. Terry Dame, FF Alumn, selected as 2006 Sundance Institute Composer Lab Fellow
Terry Dame was selected to be one of 6 composers out of 250 applicants to participate in the 2006 Sundance Institute Composer Lab. The lab takes place at the Sundance Institute in Utah from July 25-August 10th. The two week intensive pairs composers with directors from the Sundance Directors Lab to work on feature projects. Dame also recently finished two feature film scores. One for Maria Maggenti’s new feature “Puccini for Beginners” which premeired in competition at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and opened both the Frameline Festival in San Francisco and OutFest in LA. The second film, entitled “MOM” by director Erin Greenwell premiered in NYC at NewFest in June and also had showings at Framline and OutFest.

liveartwork DVD issue 3, July 2006 Now Released!
July sees the release of the third issue of liveartwork DVD, a unique publication which showcases contemporary, international performance art work.
Issue 3 features documentation of the debut of Lone Twin Theatre’s first narrative based theatre work, ‘Alice Bell’; extracts from the most recent appearance by legendary performance art group Black Market International and ‘FunnySorryJesus’, Norwegian performance theatre group Baktruppen’s very unique interpretation of the Bible. Also featured are solo performance works from Sylvette Babin ( Canada), Paul Granjon ( UK) and Mark Wayman (UK).
With a new issue published every three months, liveartwork DVD aims to present an overview of contemporary performance art practice to an international audience.

Dianne Arndt’s Fire In The Bronx… & Armed And Dangerous, multiple light-box installations, are on view at the Gallery Aferro’s IN LIGHT exhibit from July 12 through August 6. The gallery is at 73 Market Street, Newark, NJ. The work focuses on “a linear display of civic unease.”

Hell on Reels [Astoria Moving Picture Festival], named in reference to the infamous Hell Gate Bridge spanning NYC’s East River, is a forum for the exhibition of exceptional and unique short format moving image works, including documentary, narrative, music video, animation, design and experimental films.
The intention of the festival is to provide a forum for the presentation of a diverse range of moving image works and promote creative dialogue and collaboration among participants within the local Queens community, greater NYC metropolitan area and global film society. The first installment of the Hell on Reels [Summer Series] on May 21, 2006 was a great success and featured a selection of short films from around the globe, from Jackson Heights, Queens to Malmo, Sweden and Chicago, Illinois to Berlin, Germany. The June 25 th installment of the festival featured short works of all genres ranging from quirky animations from Brooklyn, to hand manipulated 16mm film from Ontario, Canada.
All screenings are outdoors in the garden to take full advantage of the NYC summer while it lasts!
