Vivian Babuts, bares her consummated hermaphroditic soul in this hairy-raising collection of raw and provocative live performances exploring the powerful role of the “Other” in our society – and in ourselves, and our simultaneous attraction and revulsion toward this monster of our own creation. The work expresses the powerlessness and rage, as well as the determination and empowerment accompanying her/it/our attempts for survival and a voice in this highly charged time/space reality we know as our current contemporary world. All the distinctions we thought we could count on, like fantasy and reality, private and public, male and female, straight and gay, are all crumbling like the tall towering egos of our past. And as we run for our lives! – we’re headed directly toward an age of enlightenment. Queer, but true.
BIO:
Vivian Babuts was born in Syracuse, NY – the daughter of Romanian immigrants. She has performed her solo works and exhibited her photographs over the years in various venues in New York City; Syracuse, NY; and Uzdin, Serbia; including Dixon Place, WOW Café Theater, LaMama Theater Annex, I Gallery, and Light Work Gallery. She is many things – including the love of your life.

The Community Environmental Center Site Specific Solar Series presents choreographer Kathy Westwater’s Interspecies Love, Part 1: Twisted, a neo-romantic melodrama inspired by cross species culture. In this duet delineation among human, animal, mind, and body transform moment to moment, challenging perceptions of time, space, memory, myth, how we relate to other species, and ourselves.
About her recent work Tobi Tobias of The Village Voice wrote, “Westwater’s Dark Matter, Part 1: Frontier & Part 2: Dynasty evokes primordial life with intimations of the highly evolved organisms that would emerge from it. Westwater reminds us that we are irrevocably connected, not merely biologically but also psychologically, to that original ooze and the blunt impulses that lay within it.” Interspecies Love, Part 1: Twisted is performed by Abby Block and Kathy Westwater with music by Peter Kirn.

Synopsis:
“Demotic” is a performance work about American Memory, a single character whose many voices are woven together into a complex texture of language, sound, and music to create a kind of covert national anthem.
Project Description:
How do we best portray the multiplicity underlying the American experience? In “Demotic,” artists Antoinette LaFarge and Robert Allen harness the Internet and the stage to create a performance work exploring American Memory. Made possible through the Beall Center’s high speed connectivity, the performance features a single live actor who draws on an ensemble of sound artists, dispersed performers, avatars, and the everyday experience of online citizens. From this tour-de-force improvisation emerges both a complex texture of language, sound, and music and a contemporary national anthem.

Dear Friends,
Rocio Aranda-Alvarado and I are hoping that you will join us for “Plight,” an evening of performance pieces by “EA50” artist Nicolás Dumit Estévez and self-appointed psychotherapist Lisa Levy (details below). To avoid a panel at all costs, both artists have chosen alternative formats to probe the most pressing concerns of professional artists and to open dialogues that will be both informative and entertaining. It’s also a great excuse to bring your friends down to the exhibit and buy raffle tickets!
As part of the evening, Lisa will invite three artist-audience members to her couch to discuss any issue related to his or her lifestyle, professionally or otherwise. As EA50 artists, we would like to offer you the first opportunity to participate. Please email me and let me know if you would like to be called on stage. We will put your name in a hat among other interested EA50 artists and select randomly. You are welcome to tell us what your issues are in 1-2 sentences, but we would prefer that you remain open to the improvisational format-in other words, there is no need to rehearse or invent a serious neurosis before the show!

Part 1. Nicholas Estevez: “A.P. (Artist’s Proof)” – 35min.
When I’ve been invited to perform, I’ve often settled for a kitchen, a lobby, a subway platform, a restaurant, a market stall or reception desk, but hardly ever for a theater space.

In “A.P.” Estévez intentionally selects HEREart’s 75-seat theater space to discuss his art practice through a chronological slide presentation formatted as a performative exercise.
Part 2. Lisa Levy: “Psychotherapy Live!” – The Emerging Session – 45min Performance artist and self-appointed psychotherapist, Lisa Levy invites emerging artists to the couch in special version of her interactive performance piece Psychotherapy Live! Dr. Levy cures audience volunteers of their “issues” with the collective help of everyone else watching. It’s a unique improvisational format that’s helpful, insightful and funnier than Dr. Phil on Valium. After 20 years of being in therapy herself, Dr, Levy is quite qualified to tell other people what’s wrong with them. She applies her psychological insights in 13-minute sessions. Meanwhile, everyone watching is invited to offer their own HELPFUL advice.
On July 21, Psychotherapy Live! Dr. Levy will be dealing exclusively with the issues of three aspiring artist-audience members, presenting a broader survey for all of us on the life of the emerging.

Printed Matter, Inc. is very pleased to announce the opening of our summer exhibition, Yoko Ono. Editions, Ephemera and Printed Works. On view throughout Summer 2004, the exhibition will feature a wide range of material from the early 1960s to the present. Some pieces will be for sale while others, long out of print, will serve as a framework for the work of this committed avant-garde artist. The opening reception for the exhibition will take place at Printed Matter on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 from 5 to 7 PM. Printed Matter is located at 535 West 22nd Street between 10th and 11th Avenues.
Yoko Ono is known internationally as one of the most challenging and influential artists of our age. She has created revolutionary music, performance, film and visual art since the 1960s. Her engagement with language, concept and viewer participation had a strong influence on the formation of Fluxus, and she was among the first artists to practice what later came to be called “Conceptual Art.” Her poetic projects operate on both intimate and global scales, linking experiences of personal transformation with the possibility of political transformation through thoughtful action.
Ono’s engagement with simple, human activities and her belief in the power of the mind to realize good through visualization, led her to create profound ephemeral works of art seamlessly integrated into everyday life. These works often took the form of instructions – for music, paintings, events, objects and films. They were collected for the first time in her seminal 1964 artist’s book Grapefruit, which, from 1970 on, has been re-published in many languages and editions. Perhaps more copies of Grapefruit have been printed than any other artist’s book.
As an organization dedicated to artists’ publications as an alternative and accessible venue for artists’ ideas and artworks, Printed Matter is proud to present the work of someone who so inventively and energetically uses printed material as an integral part of her work. We are delighted to exhibit documents from Ono’s early performances, exhibitions, and installations in addition to examples of her mailed artworks, artists’ books, and a 1965 price list (a conceptual work in itself). Post cards and posters from her collaborative work with John Lennon, War is Over! (If You Want It), will be displayed alongside buttons, cards and posters from her current peace campaigns, Imagine Peace, and Remember Love. The image of a naked bottom that filled all public advertising space in the small town of Langenhagen, Germany for In Celebration of Being Human, covers umbrellas, stickers, shopping bags, newspapers and posters that will be for sale at Printed Matter during the exhibition.
Yoko Ono’s works and 15,000 other artists’ publications will be available from Printed Matter’s web site: www.printedmatter.org. A complete checklist will be posted to our website on July 21, 2004.

Indra Tamang is a photographer and collagist. During the Studio 54 era, he photographed everyone in the world. He didn’t know who many of them were, having only left Nepal in 1974. He met Charles Henri Ford while he was working in the pantry of the hotel in which Charles was staying. When he left the first time, they went to Paris. Indra met Man Ray, Edouard Roditi and Leonor Fini first. In New York, Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey were first, as well as Dali, Sylvia Miles, John and Yoko, on and on. Indra can tell stories of Charles’s flirtations with Gertrude Stein, and he can tell about castrating a bull in his little village, where his mother still lives in Nepal. He is truly an amazing person with one foot in each of two very different and interesting worlds.

Make Nice will be the theme of the fifth edition of White Box’s annual summer series, Six Feet Under. As in previous years, Make Nice will consist of exhibitions mounted by critics and curators who will take possession of White Box’s exhibition space for the duration of one week each. These exhibitions are viewed through the sidewalk-level large window and in (VIDEOBOX), a division of White Box located in another outdoor window. This year the topic specifically addresses the Republican National Convention, which is to be staged in New York from August 29 through September 2, 2004. The premise is that the curators, and the artists they select, respond to an ad-campaign featuring Ed Koch in which he tells New Yorkers: “The Republicans are Coming, Make Nice.” This superfluous comment, that New Yorkers or anyone visiting New York this summer should not voice their opinion against the Republicans nor harass them at their National Convention is paradoxically the prime motivation for White Box to invite curators and artists to add their voices.

Susana Cook’s 100 Years of Attitude constructs an allegory of worldly crisis which constantly jumps the divide between the surreal and the commonplace. Latin American Magic Realism meets Global Logic Terrorism in this frenzied clash of sanctifiers, executioners, lesbian homeowners, and some very undistinguished guests – all fighting to make their way in one queer land of make believe. This epic tale of love, valor, and staged compassion follows the family of women as they venture beyond death and silence to embark on a 100-year journey in search of progress and their very own dramatic reappearance. Cook welcomes you to a world of adaptation and civilization – gone awry – as only she could tell it. Her artistic approach has been described as Argentinean-Butch-Political-Performance-Art and, as with all of her work, 100 Years of Attitude deftly combines political satire, dark humor, and non-traditional branches of theater, to create this tour de force of biting social commentary.
