We are pleased to announce LIVE 2003: Biennial of Performance Art will take place this Fall from October 18th- November 29th. LIVE 2003 is a national event promoting performance activity within Vancouver. Structured as a six week festival around the solo performance, it is a collaboration of 40 events and 20 participating galleries.
LIVE 2003’s theme, ‘Performance Art and the Academy’, focuses on performance’s rocky road through the halls of academia. Through publications, artist’s talks and panel discussions as well as performance presentations and exhibitions, (most free) our aim is to increase the profile of performance internationally and increase the participation of Canadian artists within this international dialogue.
Some participating institutions are Artspeak, Or Gallery, Western Front, Video-In studios, Vancouver Art Gallery, Contemporary Art Gallery, Access, grunt gallery, Centre A, On Edge, Helen Pitt Gallery, Gallery Gachet, Butchershop Floor, Crying Room, H.A.G., Radix Theatre, Indigenous Media Arts Group, Open Space (Victoria), and Neutral Ground (Regina).

After 24 years of trying, Jeanne Claude and Christo have just been granted permission by Mayor Bloomberg – an old friend – to build “The Gates” in Central Park. For two weeks in February 2005, Christo and Jeanne Claude will create a “gentle disturbance” in New York’s sanctuary: about 7,500 16-foot high gates dangling saffron colored fabric will wind around 23 miles of the park’s pathways. 16th Annual Provincetown Harbor Swim For Life & Paddler Flotilla, A Community Benefit For Aids & Women’s Health, Set For Saturday, September 6, 2003; Pool Splash Returns; New Business Awards Announced.
Swimmers and paddlers from across the country are invited to converge on Cape Cod for the Provincetown Harbor Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla, A Community Benefit for AIDS & Women’s Health, celebrating its 16th year on September 6, 2003. The 2002 event raised $140,000 from 300 swimmers and paddlers, surpassing the million dollar mark. A total of $98,000 was disbursed to the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, Helping Our Women, Outer Cape Health Services, the Family Tree/AIDS History Project, and the Art Archives. Business sponsors for this year to date include: The Provincetown Banner, Mike’s Movies/Boston, Paul Mitchell, KY Liquid, The New Crown & Anchor, Mussel Beach Health Club and David Flower Productions. The Swim for Life is sponsored in part by the Provincetown Tourism Fund and the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
This popular post-Labor Day community festival will be held at the Boatslip Resort, 161 Commercial Street and includes the Celebration of Life Concert on Friday and the Mermaid Brunch at the Bas Relief Park following the Swim on Saturday. The Pool Splash for those unable or unwilling to cross the harbor invites swimmers to swim in a pool. New business awards will be presented to businesses who recruit and/or sponsor a swimmer and collect pledges.

Joe Tullgren A graduate of the University of New Hampshire’s Music Performance Program under the instruction of David Ripley and Dr. Henry Wing, Joseph Tullgren’s concentration was in Ethnomusicology. His primary focus was in Native and African-American Song development,as well as the study of contemporary Art Song. Joe has developed a unique experimental style that bridges the gap between Art Songs and Song Cycles and the more contemporary forms of “Nu Jazz”, R&B, Ambient, and Electronic music. He founded Loosepaper Music to publish his works and also to develop ideas for “Loosepaper Collection” – a cycle of works in progress. Most recently he performed with Leonardo Smith and Dancers as primary composer and music director.

China Blue, FF Alumn, is an installation artist who uses feng shui parameters to place the work. The application of feng shui it is believed, changes the direction and pattern of energy in the room, resulting in a “healthy and positive” environment. This in turn creates healthier and productive lives. When exercising the practice, China Blue uses a diversity of materials including digital devices and sound, to facilitate this concept. These hybrid digital interfaces first build on the feng shui parameters and then succeed in abstracting the solutions. By transcending the functional aspects of the practice she had thus transformed a discipline into art. The work is created in relationship to the space and the people who use it and live in it. The solutions for spaces are based on the problems and concerns in the lives of the people who live and work in them. As a result, this on-going project constantly fluxes, according to the space and people involved. In applying this concept to the gallery she challenges the Western notions of how space is perceived, by articulating a Chinese perception to space that is in relationship to those who live and work in it.
