Cartoonist R. Sikoryak presents an entertaining slide show lecture revealing how “high art” literature collides with “low art” comic strips as cartoonists adapt (and plunder) classic novels and plays, in comics as varied as Classics Illustrated, Picture Stories from the Bible, Mad, and R. Crumb’s Kafka.

Sikoryak discusses the history of these reinterpretations, with 150 images from over eighty years of comic books and strips. They are by turns respectful, hilarious, and revelatory. This program is made possible through the support of the New York City Council for the Humanities’ “Speakers in the Humanities” program.

Let Me
NAO BUSTAMANTE
Tuesday July 19, 8 pm
Tickets $8/$6 Langton members, students, seniors

JAMES BEWLEY and NAO BUSTAMANTE, longtime Bay Area performance artists, present two new works which explore the darker sides of role-playing, storytelling and dashed dreams. For “Let Me,” Bustamante uses video, karaoke, costume, fairy tales and her own “evil voice” to challenge the conventions of the “hero” figure in performance. Bewley’s alter-ego Dale (formerly of the Man/Woman Show) is the protagonist of “Back to Life,” a tragicomic performance incorporating songs of redemption from America’s heartland. More info:

3. David Medalla, FF Alumn, at EuroArt Live, London, July 16, 2pm

David Medalla, FF Alumn, will perform on Saturday, July 16, 2005, at 2 p.m., during the 1st EuroArt Live Festival on the stage at Unit 22F, 784/788 High Road, Tottenham, London N7 0DA, England. The 1st EuroArt Live Festival is organised by English artist Lorraine Clarke and Jamaican artist Nigel Young. The festival will feature live art events, poetry, music and dance.

David Medalla’s performance is the latest in his series of impromptus and performance art works, collectively entitled “Aerial Surfing Through Labyrinths of Light”. Recent works in this on-going series are the performance entitled “Jusq’au bout du monde”, which  David Medalla presented at the opening of the exhibition “Les Merveilles du Monde” curated by Peter Fillingham at the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Dunkerque in France, and several imppromptus dedicated to the memory of Albert Einstein, including “A Game of Dice” (which David Medalla performed at Museum Man in Liverpool), “Professor Einstein  Descending the Grand Staircase at Humboldt University in Berlin” (created in collaboration with Australian artist Adam Nankervis), and “The Einstein Rap”, which David Medalla performed with young break-dancers at the Einstein Turn (designed by Felix Mendelsohn) in Potsdam, Germany, in spring this year.

David Medalla’s coming performance at the 1st EuroArt Live Festival was inspired by a dream which the Filipino artist had recently, about voyaging with his lovers in  galactic space and encountering the Asteroid named in honor of the Russian poet Anna Akhmatova. It is an enchanting dream, and, doubtless, David Medalla will enchant the audience at the EuroArt Live Festival,as he has done in all his beautiful performances.

For more information about the 1st EuroArt Live Festival, please log in the internet into the websites: info@euroart.co.uk and www.euroart.co.uk

For photos of some of David Medalla’s performances, please log in the internet into these two websites: www.londonbiennale.org and www.museumman.org

David Medalla is the founder and director of the London Biennale, the first do-it-yourself biennial of modern international art.

A photograph of David Medalla’s celebrated bubble-machines, “Cloud Canyons”, the first works of auto-creative art, appears in the book “Art Since 1900” by Hal Foster, Rosalind Krauss, Benjamin Buchloh and Yve-Alain Bois, published recently by Thames & Hudson, London.

Zapped! Workshop – July 15, 2005 – 6:30 – 9:00pm at Eyebeam, NYC
By Preemptive Media (Beatriz da Costa, Heidi Kumao, Jamie Schulte and
Brooke Singer)

You may have heard the term RFID and possibly even brought one home unknowingly. But what exactly is a Radio Frequency Identification tag? Why are Wal-Mart, the Department of Defense and the Food & Drug Administration sinking big bucks into these little chips and paving the way for mass implementation? After a brief overview of the technology and its potential impact on our lives, each participant will receive a Zapped! RFID Kit complete with a colorful workbook and materials for the hands-on portion of the workshop. Preemptive Media will guide the group through building an RFID keychain detector that plays a jingle when a reader is within range and scanning the airwaves for data. Participants can program tags that “talk back” to a RFID reader uncovered by a Zapped! keychain. www.zapped-it.net.

Registration fee is $25 general public, $20 for Eyebeam members.

10. Ron Athey, FF Alumn, at Redcat, LA, July 13-16

Dearest friends, I’m writing to give you an update on the status of the performative opera The Judas Cradle, that Juliana Snapper and I have been developing for the last year. We are now working with a brilliant electronic musician and trumpet player, Amanda Piasecki, who we just returned from a strenuous 7 week tour of Ireland and UK with. I wanted to let you know about our upcoming July performances at REDCAT, we look forward to premiering this work in the U.S. As this is the first large production I’ve done in Los Angeles since 1994! and I’m excited OUTFEST and REDCAT are co-producing this event in order to make it happen. There’s ticket information on the redcat site: http://redcatweb.net/ and more info at bottom of the press release below. July 13-16: In order to fill 4 nights, I need help promoting, please feel free to forward info on this performance to anyone who might be interested!

Finally, for the Afterparty on Opening Night, my dear comradess Vaginal Davis will be hosting with a special performance from her Vanessa Beecroft series, “V.D. is V.B.: Black and White Men & Women Together Forever,” and Amanda Piasecki will present a cradle cake performance. If you are not coming to the performance that night but want to come to the party just send me an email.
Hope to see you soon, Ron

Opera Meets Performance Art in The Judas Cradle — Four Performances Only!

Ron Athey, joined by Juliana Snapper, performs in Los Angeles for the first time in 10 years

Los Angeles — REDCAT, the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, and Outfest 2005: The 23rd Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival will copresent the U.S. premiere of The Judas Cradle, a special live performance that features legendary performance artist Ron Athey and soprano/musicologist Juliana Snapper. This multimedia operatic drama uses body and voice, as well as projected image and elaborate costumes, to explore the history of torture and personal suffering. The limited engagement is July 13-16, beginning each evening at 8:30 p.m. The four performances are part of the Platinum Section of Outfest 2005, a signature showcase dedicated to films, videos, live performances and multimedia works that defy boundaries.

The Judas Cradle can only be described as a visually stunning piece of work, which moves the senses and disturbs the intellect. It invites the audience to question the very nature of the human condition, the authority that is in operation to judge and control us and how, as humans, we are so capable of subverting this.” (Giovanna Maria Casetta, Colchester Journal)

Athey performs with a barbaric torture device, also named the Judas cradle, while undergoing an operatic inquisition from Snapper. Forcing his body to transcend its confines, Athey pushes the limits of endurance through artistic expression.

“Athey’s voice spins around my taut string, greasing it up, defining its space and pulling light in,” says Snapper. “Our trilling, nuzzling, beating phonography is a struggle between one body disciplined and one body stretching to capacity.”

The multilingual libretto is built from disparate sources, including transcripts of Inquisition hearings, opera quotes, and Jean Genet’s closing statement of the witness from Prisoner of Love. Vocal techniques include high-pitched duets, Mae West-inspired Debussy and spirit-induced speaking in tongues.

Conceived and performed by Ron Athey and Juliana Snapper, with live accompaniment and sound design by Amanda Piaseki, costume design by Susan Mattheson, and video/supertitles by Cyril Kuhn. The Judas Cradlewas originally commissioned by Fierce! Festival with support from Arts Council England.

REDCAT, CalArts’ downtown center for innovative visual, performing and media arts, is located at the corner of W. 2nd St. and S. Hope St., inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex. The Judas Cradle runs July 13-16, Thursday-Saturday, starting at 8:30 p.m. each evening. Tickets prices: $25; $22 for Outfest members. Seating is general admission. Tickets may be purchased at the REDCAT box office — located at the corner of 2nd and Hope Streets, by calling 213.237.2800, or at www.redcat.org. They can also be purchased through the Outfest website at www.outfest.org or by calling 213.480.7065.

11. Mitzi Humphrey, Stephanie Brody Lederman, Lucy Lippard FF Alumns, at art6 Gallery, VA, thru July 31, 2005

Thru July 31st 2005 Curated by Mitzi Humphrey, art6 Gallery is excited to announce the Fluxus Redux exhibit for the month of July. Based on a movement that mainly developed in North America and Europe, “Fluxus” did not aim at being avant-garde in the sense of creating a new language, but rather at making a different use of established channels of art, and at the liberation of art from any specific language. “Fluxus” has functioned as a moving front of people, rather than as a group of specialists, with the aim of creating a series of chain-reactions, or magnetic waves, above and below art.

The Fluxux Redux exhibit will feature Re-Collage; an international mail art project, The Paper Shredder; a full room installation of ritual paper shredding, Fluxus Driven; a large van covered with bumper stickers that will travel in and around Richmond, and other Fluxus art from the 70’s and 80’s, which will be donated by Humphrey to the Rare Books Department at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Cabell Library following the July exhibit.

In support of the Fluxus Redux exhibit, art6 Gallery will be hosting a variety of lectures, music performances, and film presentations during the month of July.

Toilet Treatments—A ‘Dank’ Comedy
Written, Directed and Produced by Jay Critchley
2002/Digital/39 minutes
HBO Audience Award for Short, Provincetown International Film Festival 2002

Alice in Wonderland meets David Lynch! Psychologically-repressed, Mid-westerner Katrina’s spiritual journey takes her to a magical East Coast seaside town where she confronts her demons, her father, and her sub-conscious—literally in an abandoned, reclaimed backyard septic tank. Katrina’s (Blythe Frank) new business of installing and programming video screens in public and private bathrooms utilizes found clips from Mary Tyler Moore Aerobic Workout video to Bass Fishing in Texas. New Age cross dresser Lady McBee, played by David Hanbury, is her mentor as the entrepreneur descends into her subterranean apartment and is ultimately transformed by the world of color (she is color blind except when she watches TV!). George, her ex-high school guidance counselor and business partner is continuously heard via cellphone only from their New Jersey headquarters. Ramone, the indomitable Latin Lover Ricardo Rodriguez, Katrina’s plumber and choreographer, sparks romance that vibrates from the magic of septic sex to Texas! A must pee!
