Dominic McGill – Project for a New American Century

Derek Eller Gallery is pleased to present new work by Dominic McGill.
Like a modern-day Bayeux tapestry, Dominic McGill’s latest drawing, Project For a New American Century, is an epic graphite on paper panoramic loop that stretches 65 feet. Standing at almost 8 feet high, the drawing hangs suspended from the ceiling and fills the entire gallery space.
Project for a New American Century takes its name from a Washington-based neo-conservative think-tank “The Project for the New American Century”. Drawn largely from historical quotes, political slogans, media buzzwords, and pop culture references; this endless timeline spans from Hiroshima through the Cold War to the present, ending and beginning in nuclear fire. The work functions as a hypertext of conspiracy, the sensational, the propagandist and the revolutionary. Hundreds of names ,events and slogans that have made the papers are scrawled over a panoramic wasteland; Whittaker Chambers, Martin Luther King Jr., Osama bin Laden , Dresden, Levittown, overlayed with ,Bloody Sunday, By Any Means Necessary ,Axis of Evil, and Chernobyl . Curious coincidences appear throughout the work.’ Bob Dylan Finds Jesus’ appears close to ‘Jonestown Massacre’, and Gary Gilmore’s quote “We are sentenced to die the day that we are born” crops up next to the Hyde Amendment. Thick lines of gothic text referencing the Prison Industry to the Religious Right to O.J . unravel into a dark wood , leading the viewer to a silent place, where the words are obscured and the present is uncertain. Born in England, Dominic McGill lives and works in New York. This will be his first show with the gallery.

Dear Sex, Love and Art Enthusiasts,
This is it folks! An eye-gasmic, educational, enlightening, and sexy documentary about the big O, featuring interviews with 26 orgasm experts. After you see this film, you will likely see orgasms in a whole new light. This film has been years in the making, and now finally I’m having the world premiere of my movie ANNIE SPRINKLE’S AMAZING WORLD OF ORGASM, which I co-directed with Sheila Malone. (Running time: 53 minutes.) I’d absolutely LOVE you to come to this premiere, because I honestly think you will really enjoy it. Plus it’s a double feature! You will also experience HEARTS CRACKED OPEN, the first-ever lesbian Tantra documentary, by Betsy Kalin and her partner, Candy Lowell. (RT: 45 minutes.) It’s their world premiere too. Ms. Arneson is an interdisciplinary artist (writer/director/performer/painter) renowned for plays about girlhood, sexuality and American archetypes, including MARY MARGARET PLEASE APPEAR, DEGRADE SCHOOL, HOMELAND SECURITY and TEN BEDROOM HEART. She has performed as featured artist for Franklin Furnace and Dixon Place in NYC, N.A.M.E. in Chicago, Cleveland Performance Art Festival, and nearly every venue in Minneapolis, including Red Eye, the Walker, The Weisman and the Southern. She is a recipient of the Bush Artist Fellowship, Franklin Furnace Emerging Artist Award, and Core Alumni of the Playwrights’ Center. Her writing was recently chosen for publication in the book New Monologues by Women for Women (Willamette University). She teaches CreativityWorkshops in the Twin Cities which sharpen public speaking skills, expand creativity, dissolve fears and build community.

Film-makers’ cooperative plans summer benefit concert at Orensanz Center
On Thursday, July 1, 2004 at 8:00pm music headliners and filmmakers will rally in support of The Film-Makers’ Cooperative at a Summer Benefit Concert at the Angel Orensanz Center for the Arts, 172 Norfolk Street (betw. Houston and Stanton Streets) in New York City.
The evening’s line-up features performances by Philip Glass in conjunction with the screening of a film by Harry Smith, a projector performance by Ken Jacobs, a performance video by Carolee Schneemann, Lee Ranaldo and Tim Barnes performing “Text of Light”, Rebecca Moore’s band Prevention of Blindness with films by Joel Schlemowitz, and the Michael Gordon Band featuring the films of Bill Morrison.
Film-makers’ Coop Executive Director M.M. Serra beams, “It will be a phenomenal night of great music, by great performers with rare screenings of some of avant-garde’s great cinematic treasures.”
Founded in 1962, The Film-Makers’ Cooperative is the oldest and largest artist-run collection of avant-garde cinema in the nation. Proceeds from the benefit will support the Coop’s preservation efforts and the distribution of over 4000 films in its collection.
Artist and organizer for the event, Bill Morrison remarks “This is a chance for the city to come together and support a vibrant, living film collection in lower Manhattan that reflects a history of the avant-garde back to 1921.” “It’s an amazing collection that continues to influence audiences worldwide everyday.”

LAB MEAT: a creative dissection of the body in motion with Kathy Westwater, FF Alumn.
This laboratory uses improvisational techniques to articulate the body in relationship to varying matter, including, object, environment, sound, concept, and structure. Context is created to allow physical responses to occur, which are examined somatically and creatively. Participants, through their relationship to the material and each other, influence the outcome of each lab.

Her published writings include “WHENness” in the current issue of Movement Research Performance Journal, #27/28, “Then and Now.” Her teaching practice is informed by studies of improvisation with Dana Reitz and Simone Forti, and composition with Sara Rudner and Dan Hurlin.

Last year’s pageant was “legendary” (and this is no joke) –there were two catfights backstage, the fourth runner-up cried for days, the third runner-up was so loaded she ripped the curtain on the way to the floor, the judges were hilariously corrupt, and Ivana Trump, who sat next to Kathleen Hanna, witnessed the entire show in absolute delight…and horror. Murray guarantees an even more enticing spectacle this year.
The Miss Lower East Side Pageant is one of the East Village’s leading achievement programs and the world¹s largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women by providing unlimited drink tickets, a plastic tiara from the 99 cent store, and $100 cash in singles to the winner. The Miss L.E.S. (which also can be pronounced “lez” signifying gay women) Organization provides young women with a vehicle to further their personal and professional goals and instills a spirit of community service, and gives these gals the opportunity to wear sashes rather than Dickies and Trucker Hats for a change.
The pageant itself is highly competitive, loads of fun, and occasionally meaningless. After receiving over 500 applications on friendster, our judges narrowed down the search to five contestants: Miss Orchard, Miss Delancey, Miss Rivington, Miss Houston, and Miss Allen. These young women will compete in the following categories: platform statement, swimsuit, evening gown, interview, swimsuit, and if there is time, talent.
THE MURRAYETTES, ex-showgirls and pageant runner-ups now in recovery, provide half-time entertainment, while our celebrity judges Michael Musto, Latina comic sensation Marga Gomez, Linda Simpson, Off-Broadway swingers Wau-Wau Sisters, and JD Samson from LeTigre tally the votes and take bribes from the contestants (it happens every year). All previous pageant winners will be on hand to share with the audience and contestants, how their life changed after being crowned Miss L.E.S.
