Hi Everybody,
I will be doing an intensive week-long performance workshop this summer on Cap Cod at the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill in Truro August 4-8. This workshop is for people to gather together to explore creating original performances. No previous performance experience necessary! More info below. (There is a one-third off discount for folks on my mailing list who would travel to do the workshop.) Truro is right next to Provincetown so it would make for a good creative holiday! Tim Miller: Storytelling/Performance Workshop
This workshop is for people to gather together to explore creating original performances. Our goal is to share a variety of strategies to create original performances from the tremendous energies and stories that are present in our lives. Using our own memories and myths as a jumping off point, we will see where a deep sense of personal history creates performance that jumps out from our bodies onto the stage or the page. Please bring your hearts and brains, hopes and fears. No performance experience necessary.
Tim Miller is an internationally acclaimed solo performer. Hailed for their humor and passion, Miller’s solo theater works have been presented all over North America, Australia, and Europe at such prestigious venues as Yale Repertory Theatre, the Institute of Contemporary Art (London), the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He is the author of the book Shirts & Skin and Body Blows. Since 1990, Miller has taught performance in the theater department at UCLA. He is a founder of the two most influential performance spaces in the United States: Performance Space 122 on Manhattanís Lower East Side and Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica, CA. Two-Day Workshop with Nationally Acclaimed Playwright/Performance Artist Deb Margolin Offered at Kitchen Theatre, Ithaca
Nationally and critically acclaimed playwright and performance artist Deb Margolin, who has appeared in the last two Bring in the Spring! Performance Art Festivals at the Kitchen Theatre, is returning to Ithaca this summer for a two-day intensive workshop called Creative Writing for Performance. This workshop, sponsored by The Kitchen Theatre Company and Sharp Co., is scheduled for the weekend of August 3 and 4 and costs $150. Using automatic writing, storytelling, vocal playing, movement work and performance itself, participants will develop material for use in autobiographically derived performance, find concrete methods for making the personal presentational, and actually culminate the experience in an informal yet fully realized experimental performance. Deb Margolin is a playwright, performance artist and founding member of Split Britches Theater Company. As the author of six full-length solo performance pieces that have toured throughout the United States, Ms. Margolin is the recipient of a 1999-2000 OBIE Award for Sustained Excellence of Performance. Her solo performance piece entitled O Wholly Night and Other Jewish Solecisms was commissioned by the Jewish Museum of New York in 1996, and subsequently enjoyed a successful run at the Interart Theater in New York City. Deb’s play Critical Mass premiered at Performance Space 122 in New York in the Winter of 1997. Her play Bringing the Fishermen Home workshopped at Dixon Place in NYC and was
part of the New Work Now! Festival at the Joseph Papp Public Theater that premiered in April of 1999 at the Cleveland Public Theater under the direction of Randy Rollison. Index to Idioms, her latest performance piece, premiered in workshop at The Kitchen Theatre¹s Bring in the Spring! Performance Art Festival this past April. Ms. Margolin has lectured extensively at universities throughout the country, has been artist in residence at Hampshire College and University of Hawaii, and a Zale writer-in-residence at Tulane University. She is currently a faculty lecturer in Playwriting and Performance in Yale University’s Theater Studies Program.
The Kitchen Theatre Company, under the guidance of Artistic Director Rachel Lampert, brings cutting edge, though provoking theatre to Ithaca and nurtures a community of diverse artists. The Kitchen develops and produces the newest plays, is both a presenting and producing organization for a variety of audiences, and supports a growing culture of performance art in Ithaca and the surrounding region. Dear People:
I’ll be improvising with live commercial radio this coming Friday, on an interesting double bill with Amy X Neuburg.
In addition to her own stunning work, Amy will also perform my headphone-driven solo piece TRAVELOGUE (her one and only TRAVELOGUE, of course). She is a fine and fast, musical headphoner.
As for me, once again I will walk on with FM boom box, grab some radio bits on the spot, and fire up the PowerBook and Musical Shoes to slice, dice and rhythmatize the media as it flies through the air. In other words, the (always-different) usual, and still in-progress!
As I continue to perform the piece in its current state, my structured improvs grow increasingly musical, or so I’m told. The comic/theatrical elements are still there.
My next major step will be to create software algorithms which will transform the found sound into complex, FUNKY musical patterns. And then on to longer structures, all from found material, of course…

6. Helen Varley Jamieson, FF Intern, UpStage project now online.
A web site documenting the UpStage project is now live at http://www.upstage.org.nz
UpStage is a software development project that will create a web-based venue for online peformance and cyberformance (live performance that uses the internet to bring remote performers together in real time).
Online audiences anywhere in the world will be able to participate in live performance events by going to a web page – no downloads, no additional applications needed, just one simple url: http://www.upstage.org.nz
Currently, we are developing the software, which is Flash-based and open source. UpStage will be launched in October 2003.
The UpStage team are Douglas Bagnall (programmer) and artists Helen Varley Jamieson, Vicki Smith, Leena Saarinen and Karla Ptacek (Avatar Body Collision, www.avatarbodycollision.org), with project management support from MediaLab South Pacific (www.medialab.co.nz).
The project is funded by Creative New Zealand and the NZ Ministry of Research, Science and Technology.

China Blue is an installation artist who uses feng shui parameters to place the work. The application of feng shui it is believed, changes the direction and pattern of energy in the room, resulting in a “healthy and positive” environment. This in turn creates healthier and productive lives. When exercising the practice, China Blue uses a diversity of materials including digital devices and sound, to facilitate this concept. These hybrid digital interfaces first build on the feng shui parameters and then succeed in abstracting the solutions. By transcending the functional aspects of the practice she had thus transformed a discipline into art. The work is created in relationship to the space and the people who use it and live in it. The solutions for spaces are based on the problems and concerns in the lives of the people who live and work in them. As a result, this on-going project constantly fluxes, according to the space and people involved. In applying this concept to the gallery she challenges the Western notions of how space is perceived, by articulating a Chinese perception to space that is in relationship to those who live and work in it.
