The intention of the seven years is that we become an ART/LIFE VIRTUAL COMMUNITY/FAMILY for seven years-nine months, and also that each artist, while relaxing in the STATE OF ART/LIFE for the duration of the performance, feels FREE to also make art of their life using their own unique methods, while staying in MENTAL-or-real communication/support/email contact with the group, in an EASY WAY. Each artist “oversees-guides-shapes” one of the years and is a mentor for that time. Inspiration and SIMPLICITY of ART/LIFE are the goals, but do watch for an invisible or possibly visible group spectacle December 8, 2012.

Works to be performed will include:
David Cossin performing Piano/Video Phase, an inventive new visual version of Steve Reich’s original Piano Phase for two pianos, written in 1967. In Cossin’s version, which was created in 2000, he performs with a pre-recorded video of himself playing the music, projected on a screen in front of him. He then plays along with himself, although gradually, he gets out of phase with himself an amazing sonic and visual effect. “Piano Phase/Video Phase” updated an early piece that is hypnotically beautiful for its paradox of simplicity and complication.

XY by Michael Gordon, inspired by models of chromosomes. This percussion solo, written by Michael Gordon for 5 tuned drums, inspired Cossin and Shepard to turn the piece into a duo by using electronic percussion and live sound processing.
Ir Shel Shalom (City of Peace) by Yoav Gal. The piece reflects the composer’s hope for peace in his embattled homeland, Israel. Commissioned by David Cossin in 2002, it is a piece for solo amplified vibraphone, with some features extending the instrument. The result is a polyphonic piece with a pre-recorded vocal line and bass vibraphone samples, which are triggered during performance by the percussionist. The vocal line was pre-recorded in Jerusalem, Israel in March 2003 by singer Meirav Ben David.
Having Never Written a Note for Percussion by James Tenney, is one of a series of ten short works printed on postcards for friends of the composer. This particular composition was written for John Bergamo and is the last, and probably most famous, of the series. The music is simply a single sustained note, a swell from pppp to ffff and back. The only instructions “very long.”
New Works by David Cossin and David Sheppard. Part of the excitement of this collaboration is that the sound designer role, which is usually viewed as tech support, instead is treated like an instrument performed by another musician,” says Preston Stahly, Director of the New York Art Ensemble. “Sound designer and percussionist contribute equally. The implications are farreaching and open a whole new world of musical options.”

Schroeder Romero is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Lynn Cazabon. Cazabon continues to use movie film as a source in her work, both conceptually and materially. The prints in the series Film Tombs are made from films that have been discarded or de-accessioned by public institutions, in this particular series from The Pratt Library in Baltimore. Cazabon’s prints are digitally produced on a large scale with their source being the analog material of film. In these images, an entire film is presented like skeletal remains in a tomb or casket so that each print serves as a kind of memento-mori to film. The films are presented as “dead” to highlight the notion that, as a representational technology, film has been displaced by digital media and is sometimes seen as a decaying artifact in need of preservation or burial.
On view in the small gallery will be a projected digital video entitled Reel which takes the form and content of these prints into motion.
Lynn Cazabon lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland. She received an MFA in photography from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Her work is in several public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, The Mattress Factory Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha. Her first solo show with Schroeder Romero was entitled Story of M in 2002 which was also exhibited in 2003 at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, New York. As Storytelling Consultant for the Tribeca Film Festival’s Family Day, FF alum Bill Gordh has gathered more than 20 storytellers to share stories for 7 hours at the Family Day on Greenwich Street in Tribeca on Saturday, May 8th from 11:00 to 5:00. The event is free and attracted more than 200,000 people last year. The storytelling will take place on outdoor stages through out and for the entire day in a tent – The Storyland Theatre. The Storyland Theatre will be located on Jay Street just off Greenwich near Bazzini’s. Bill will be the host.

AHORA ES EL FUTURO / THE FUTURE IS NOW brings together in two consecutive exhibits, art by Cubans in Cuba and the U.S. – with a look towards tomorrow. The show focuses on artists whose works explore universal ideas, while relating to their own Cubaness. Breaking away from artworks that are directly influenced by the existing political climate or works that are rooted in representations of island life, the artists speak to a broader engagement with the contemporary art world and art historical context. Almost all of the artists in this exhibit have received widespread recognition amongst aficionados of contemporary Cuban art. Most have had a good measure of public acknowledgement from the major art press, along with inclusion in exhibitions organized by prestigious museum curators. The artists in this show are pioneers, both in form and in content. They challenge the viewer to imagine tomorrow in the context of their own concerns with modernization and globalization, migration and the status quo, the environment and the viscidity of daily life. Together these artists represent a metaphor for collective experience both present and future. If there is a universal theme in their work, it echoes a broader sentiment toward respect for the individual, a distaste for greed and consumerism, and a concern for the environment.

Free Speech Zone Installation Explores The Impact Of Censorship And Exercise Of First Amendment Rights
Site-specific work by artists Ligorano/Reese at Brooklyn Public Library May 6 – June 26
Brooklyn, NY, April 29, 2004 – The expansive powers of the Patriot Act, the increasing monopolization of media, and the explosion of the Internet present new challenges to America’s foundation of free speech. Artists Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese have conceived “Free Speech Zone” for Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) as a designated area for the exercise of First Amendment rights.
The site-specific work created specially for BPL will be on view free to the public at the Central Library, Grand Army Plaza (2nd floor balcony cases), May 6 – June 26. An Artists Talk will be held Thursday, May 20 at 6 p.m. at the Central Library’s Trustees Room, 3rd floor.
“We created this work as an elegant statement against the banning of books,” says Reese. “Libraries are a vital public access point when it comes to protecting our rights to read and to have access to information. Making this installation was a real education; it made us understand and respect even more the efforts of the library for maintaining an open society.”
The artists will transform BPL’s balcony display cases into two sets of illuminated triptychs. Each triptych includes two backlit portraits of blindfolded individuals from the library’s community, representing the diversity of those impacted by censorship. “They are the bookends, so to speak, of the triptychs,” says Ligorano.
The two middle window cases contain LED displays with a scrolling collage of passages from books that have been censored. Excerpts from recently challenged books, such as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Color Purple, Native Son and Heather Has Two Mommies, alternate with those from landmark censorship cases that include Ulysses, Naked Lunch, The Well of Loneliness, Lysistrata and The Tropic of Cancer. Nearly half of the 100 most acclaimed novels of the 20th century have been targeted for censorship, according to the American Library Association.
“Free Speech Zone” continues a series of interdisciplinary works that Ligorano/Reese call “The Borges Project.” The series focuses on the library and the collection as a site for cultural investigation. Previous works in the series include “Acid Migration of Culture” (1994), a site-specific photo-video mural at the Donnell Library Center in Manhattan, and Turning Leaves of Mind (Granary Books, 2003), a photo essay about the materiality of the book, with images drawn from archival collections throughout Spain.
The artists received assistance for “Free Speech Zone” from Materials for the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, NYC Department of Sanitation and NYC Department of Education, as well as ImageKing Visual Solutions. The installation is co-sponsored by Artists & Audiences Exchange, a public program of the New York Foundation for the Arts. The project is also supported in part by funding from the Puffin Foundation, Ltd.
Ligorano/Reese
Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese have been collaborating for almost 20 years. Their installations, videotapes and artists books have been shown in the United States and Europe. They have exhibited at Cristinerose Gallery in New York and eyewash in Brooklyn. Ligorano/Reese were artists-in-residence at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program and The MacDowell Colony. They are recipients of numerous awards and grants, including support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Jerome Foundation, and Art Matters, Inc., and are 2004 artist fellowship recipients of the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Dlight 2004 Young German Artists in New York
May 6th through May 15th, 2004
DLight presents 19 of the 25 current German DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) grantees in the arts with works ranging from dance and performance to sculpture, painting, photography, illustration, design, and architecture. These 25 talented artists were selected in a nationwide competition of the top graduates of art colleges in Germany to win a year-long fellowship to work in the US and/or Canada. This exhibit will offer visitors a small glimpse of the incredible breadth and depth of Germany’s contemporary art scene. The success of the past exhibitions of the DAAD arts grantees in the US and Canada has mandated the move to a larger venue. The exhibition will be hosted by the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in their beautiful 2900 sq. ft. gallery in Midtown Manhattan. Founded in 1925, DAAD promotes international academic relations and cooperation by offering exchange and study abroad programs for students and faculty. Over 50,000 people are supported each year, making DAAD the world’s largest mobility-supporting organization. Past recipients of this Arts Award for Graduates include LOTHAR BAUMGARTEN, THOMAS DEMAND, and HANS HAACKE. DAAD has had a long-standing tradition of work with the arts, including managing the internationally renowned Berlin Artist Program (BKP). BKP counts among its past recipients cultural celebrities from the fields of music, literature, film, and art including JOHN CAGE, IMRE KERTÉZ, JIM JARMUSH, and DAMIEN HIRST.
DLight 2004 participants are: architects Sophia Meger, Tobias Nolte, Oliver Sohn, Katja Thorwarth and Satoshi Teshima; dancer Felix Bürkle; designers Arnold Freidling and Ralf Schneider; filmmakers Ralph Kaechle and Ulrich Schwarz; performance artist Stefanie Trojan; FF Alumn; illustrators Paul Hoppe, Nora Krug, graphic designer Dirk Wachowiak; painter and printmaker Daniela Schlüter; photographer Christian Siekmeier; and sculptors Klara Hobza, Notburga Karl and Ulrich Vogl.
This DAAD annual showcase is presented with the support of the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and the Consul General of Germany Uwe-Karsten Heye.

Hi!
Most of you know I am involved with The Field, an artist-run organization in town: I started making my own performances at their workshops, I had a job there for many years, and I started teaching there. I don’t believe I’d be making art today if it weren’t for The Field. Now I’m on the board of directors; this year we are inaugurating a yearly fundraising benefit, and I hope you can come.
The party is happening Monday May 24th, at Bubby’s Brooklyn (in DUMBO) and it should be a blast. It’s the launch party for The Field’s new website, GoTour, that lets you take touring into your own hands and the whole party is travel-themed. It costs $25 at the door, but there are some details below about getting in cheaper. Kids are welcome (and under 12, they’re free!). We’ll have barbecue, drink tickets for early birds, and more.
Prizes – did I mention the prizes? There are prizes. We are raffling off round-trip airfare for two to anywhere in North America, South America, or Europe, plus other goodies. (If you want to buy some raffle tickets right now, you can let me know and I’ll hook you up, dog).
There is also a silent auction with stuff you want and even stuff you need. There will be festivities involving funny and smart people like David Parker, Mike Daisey and Jane Comfort (and some surprises).

Avatar Body Collision presents “DTN2” the first cyberformance in UpStage
Globally dispersed cyberformance troupe Avatar Body Collision will present “DTN2” using the new software UpStage, at 9pm UK time on Sunday 9 May. UpStage provides a web-based venue for live online performance, bringing some of the functionality of chat applications into a web page viewable by online audiences with a standard browser and internet connection.
“DTN2” is a demonstration performance to a proximal audience at the Machinista Festival, Glasgow, as well as to an online audience, by performers in Glasgow, Helsinki, Belgrade and Christchurch. Everything happens in real time, nothing is pre-recorded.
“DTN2” begins as a restaging of an earlier anti-war performance, “Dress The Nation” – but times have changed and what was once a satirical indictment of war-mongering is now seen as an unpatriotic act. The performance conjures up a paranoid world where the metaphors and methods of theatre become indistinguishable from the political games that are being played out on the world stage. In such an environment, what weapons do we choose? Do we act?

17. Stretch – Brooklyn International Film Festival at Brooklyn Museum, June 4-13
Now in our 7th year, we continue to explore the cultural, artistic, and educational diversity celebrated through filmmaking. Brooklyn is comprised of over 199 different ethnic groups and we have chosen films to represent and reflect this demographic. Our festival is truly a mirror of society and the current events that shape our lives and provoke our emotions.
In this rather dark moment in history, surrounded by half truths and polished versions, suffocated by inevitable circumstances, the festival wants to give space to the imagination and the creative minds that feed it. To the pure and open-minded, to the honest and those striving to be honest (we don’t discriminate). For this reason, BIFF 2004 is titled “Stretch.”
“Stretch” is a multi-cultural, multi-directional, multi-genre, and truly broad experience (we have even tailored two programs for children: June 6 – 2pm and 4pm). “Stretch” is highly opinionated and critical, yet subtle and charming. The festival was looking for new ideas and variety and found 1,618 films from 74 countries. We selected 100 films from 30 different countries that explore political, social, human and philosophical themes from genuinely imaginative points of view. That’s why each film in competition feels like no other. What do they have in common? Daring, depth, strength and the 7th BIFF.
We believe our festival is unique in this aspect. We look for uncompromised talent that reflects off the screen and into the mind’s eye. We have found it and we are proud to share it from June 4th-13th at the Brooklyn Museum.
