Schroeder Romero is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Lynn Cazabon, FF Future of the Present 2004 Recipient. Cazabon continues to use movie film as a source in her work, both conceptually and materially. The prints in the series Film Tombs are made from films that have been discarded or de-accessioned by public institutions, in this particular series from The Pratt Library in Baltimore. Cazabon’s prints are digitally produced on a large scale with their source being the analog material of film. In these images, an entire film is presented like skeletal remains in a tomb or casket so that each print serves as a kind of memento-mori to film. The films are presented as “dead” to highlight the notion that, as a representational technology, film has been displaced by digital media and is sometimes seen as a decaying artifact in need of preservation or burial.
On view in the small gallery will be a projected digital video entitled Reel which takes the form and content of these prints into motion.
Lynn Cazabon lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland. She received an MFA in photography from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Her work is in several public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, The Mattress Factory Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Omaha. Her first solo show with Schroeder Romero was entitled Story of M in 2002 which was also exhibited in 2003 at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, New York.

Phillip Warnell, FF Alumn, will have his ‘Shock’ video piece screened as part of ‘Whiz Bang’, a curated screening of work at Harvestworks in New York on Wednesday 26th May. Curated by Meg Shiffler. Works featured exploring unconventional relationships between the video image and the accompanying soundtrack. Each work has sonic elements that are not subordinate to the moving image, but play an equally significant or dominant role.

The Auckland Art Gallery – Toi O Tamaki – opens a major exhibition, “Max Gimblett: the brush of all things”, painting, sculpture, and drawing 1977-2004, curated by Wystan Curnow, with catalogue essays by Thomas McEvilley and Wystan Curnow, and an interview with Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett on June 19th. The opening reception, is June 18th. This exhibition will travel to the City Gallery, Wellington, with an opening date of December 12th, 2004. For most of the artists in this show it marks the first time their work will be exhibited in a New York Gallery. “It’s For the Birds” is a traveling exhibition organized by the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery. Fifty artists, among whom are:Stephanie Brody-Lederman, FF Alumn, Helene Brandt, Marilynn Gelfman, Allison Spear, Peter Sarkisian, Rosario Marquardt, Roberto Behar, and Zang Wanxin, have created their concept of a bird house for this exhibition. The show will be installed at the Bernice Steinbaum Gallery in Miami from May 29-August 28, 2004. It will then travel to museums nationally, for a three year tour. A catalogue has been produced to accompany the show.

Scott C Durkin, FF Alumn, began his four year “Law School Event” when he sat unprepared for the December 4, 1999 administration of the LSAT.
When we investigate ancient civilizations two areas of human achievement are prominent, civics and art. Contemporary perceptions of the legal and art professions reveal a very different and disparate regard for the two most important contributions to civilization. In an attempt to equate art and law in a practical present day application, Scott C Durkin enrolled in and successfully completed a four year accredited law school program as a documented performance event.
On Friday May 28, 2004 Durkin will conclude his performance with a “Commencement Event” to be held at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Homdel, New Jersey at 12 noon. All are welcome to attend.

Equipo Terrestre Carries the Torch in Puerto Rico!
People of all ages will be needed to walk or run carrying a ceremonial torch through the streets of Viejo San Juan on Friday night, May 28 th and Rincón on Thursday, June 3rd. The torch relay, called “Lampadedromia, Puerto Rico 2004,” has been created by artists Tadej Pogacar (Slovenia), Deidre Hoguet (USA) and Peter Walsh (USA) in celebration of pr_04. tribute to the messenger. //2004 olympics, an arts festival sponsored by the Puerto Rican arts group M&M Proyectos. In the Olympics, athletes run to represent their nations. Our olympics are on the “other site”, questioning politics, geography and sports.
As part of Equipo Terrestre, participants will run to represent whomever or whatever they wish. Anyone can carry the torch – there are no restrictions on nationality or citizenship, age or background – and artists from around the world will join with Puerto Ricans to carry the torch. Each participant will be awarded a commemorative t-shirt to wear as they carry the torch across Puerto Rico.

Background for the Project
In September of 1961 in the city of Belgrade, President Tito of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia convened the first “Conference of Non-Aligned Heads of State,” in part as a response to the growing threat of nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union. A communist who had also broken Yugoslavia’s ties with the Soviet bloc, Tito brought together luminaries of what was then called the “Third World.” Figures such as India’s Jawaharlal Nehru, Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah and Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser worked with leaders from 25 nations to look for new alternatives in the struggle to create world peace and prosperity. Looking back to this seminal moment in world history, and in search of ways that would move human society beyond the limits of national identity, Slovenian artist ad curator Tadej Pogacar has invited United States artists Deidre Hoguet and Peter Walsh to join him in creating a new olympic torch relay to carry the flame for Equipo Terrestre (Team Earth) across the commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Called “Lampadedromia, Puerto Rico 2004” after the greek word for torch relay, the art project will take place in celebration of pr_04. tribute to the messenger. //2004 olympics, an arts festival sponsored by the Puerto Rican arts group M&M Proyectos. On this occasion, several international curators have been invited to propose and work on projects in the specific context of Puerto Rico. The event will take place from May 28 to May 30 in San Juan and from May 31 to June 6, 2004, in Rincón, a town of 15,000 local habitants with a significant floating population of temporary residents. The interest of the project is to work closely with the community, carrying out a sort of archaeology of the place and having the artists collaborate with local residents. This would be the third project that M&M Proyectos would undertake in Rincón, this time with the participation of international artists and curators, which will also expand the scope of interaction between the local community and a wider international context.

Yeah hi, it’s Aaron. I’m reading a short story at Amanda Stern’s Happy Ending reading series on Wednesday May 26 at 8PM. I’d love it if you could join me. It’s a series that’s both free and fun, and has been all over the news – since when was a reading series ever on Page Six? There is musical entertainment, too, and frilly drinks are available. I’ll be reading a short story called “The Story I Would Tell You.” Ironically the ending of the story is not so happy, but don’t let that deter you.

Ninth Annual Lower East Side Festival Of The Arts at the Theater For The New City May 28-30, 2004
To demonstrate the creative explosion of the Lower East Side and the area’s importance to culture and tourism for New York City, a score of stars and over 100 performing arts organizations, independent artists, poets, politicians and film makers will join forces May 28 to 30 in the Lower East Side’s Ninth Annual Festival of the Arts (LES), in and around Theater for the New City at First Avenue and East Tenth Street. This three-day, indoor and outdoor festival of theater is organized by TNC and a coalition of civic, cultural and business leaders and is free to all New Yorkers. Last year, over 3,000 people attended.
The festival will be three days of theater and theater-related events, from Friday, May 28 to Sunday, May 30 employing three theater spaces at TNC plus the block of East Tenth Street between First and Second Avenues. On Saturday, May 29 there will be a day-long, block-long outdoor carnival of musical attractions and a community arts fair with food and crafts vendors. The list of attractions includes artists presently residing on the Lower East Side, arts groups performing there, prominent writers and artists whose work has dealt directly with the Lower East Side experience and plays written especially for this festival. The distinct ethnic communities of the Lower East Side are amply represented, including the Latin American, African American, Chinese, Indian, Irish, Italian, Jewish, Native American, Polish and Ukrainian communities. El Museo del Barrio and The Museum of Modern Art Library cordially invite you to a symposium dedicated to the MoMA Library’s current Survey of Latino Archives,( a historic effort to preserve, document and publish the continuing heritage of Latino artists in the New York Metropolitan Area. Latino and Latin American experts from the East and West Coasts will address the state of U.S. Latino visual arts documentation. They will also consider methods to increase awareness of archival practices and improve public accessibility to existing Latino art archives, with the hope to secure the history-and future-of this vital community. Selected institutions in New York containing archival and bibliographic material relevant to New York’s Latino visual arts community will also be discussed.

MoMA at El Museo: Latin American and Caribbean Art from the Collection of The Museum of Modern Art

This collaborative exhibition, organized by a curatorial team from MoMA and El Museo del Barrio, provides an overview outlining the history of MoMA’s collection of Latin American art. The presentation at El Museo del Barrio comprises over 100 works in various mediums, including painting, sculpture, drawings, prints, and artists’ books.
The first section includes major paintings and drawings by Mexicans Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros that were acquired by the Museum in the 1930s. The next section highlights works acquired from throughout Latin America by artists including Antonio Berni, Frida Kahlo, and Wifredo Lam, all purchased after the creation of the Museum’s Inter-American Fund in 1942. The third focuses on the 1960s, with particular emphasis on drawings and prints by artists such as Leon Ferrari, Gego, and Marisol. The exhibition culminates in a presentation of the Museum’s most recent acquisitions, as it continues to collect contemporary works in various media by such artists as Cildo Meireles, Vik Muniz, Gabriel Orozco and Doris Salcedo. A fully illustrated catalogue, including several essays by the curators, and a range of educational programs accompany the exhibition. MoMA at El Museo is organized for The Museum of Modern Art by Gary Garrels, Chief Curator, Department of Drawings, and Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture; Luis-Enrique Perez-Oramas, Adjunct Curator, Department of Drawings; and Miriam Basilio, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Drawings; and for El Museo del Barrio by Fatima Bercht, Chief Curator, and Deborah Cullen, Curator.

By Car from Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island:
Take the lower level of Verrazano Narrows Bridge; stay on the right, and exit at Bay Street. Take the Bay Street exit service road to Bay Street. Make a left and follow Bay Street past the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, where Bay Street becomes Richmond Terrace. Follow Richmond Terrace about one mile to Tysen Street. Make a left on Tysen Street, and then the next right on Fillmore Street, and enter the parking lot immediately to the left of the gated entrance. Parking will be right after the gate on the left-hand side.
By Car from Manhattan:
Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to BQE West. Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to SI Expwy (I-278). Get off at Clove/Richmond Road exit (#13). At third intersection, bear right onto Clove Road. Continue to Bement Ave. (will see a cemetery), turn right onto Bement. Continue to Richmond Terrace. Make a right onto Richmond Terrace to Snug Harbor. Make a quick right at the Snug Harbor sign and then a quick left through the brick gatehouse.
By Public Transportation:
From Manhattan: (by SI Ferry/bus) Travel to the SI Ferry located near Battery Park. You can take the 1/9 subway to South Ferry (make sure you are in the first 5 subway cars), or the 4/5/6 subway to Bowling Green. After a 25-minute ride across the Hudson, take the S40 bus from the ferry along Richmond Terrace to Snug Harbor (about 10-minute ride). Let the bus driver know that you want to get off at Snug Harbor.
The Art Lab is a not-for-profit art school that has been offering classes, studio and exhibition space to all artists, from novice to professional, for twenty-five years. Classes for children, teenagers and adults include instruction in the fine arts, crafts, photography and graphics.
