Dear All,
I’d like to invite you a work-in-progress performance of ” Domestic Drifts,” the new section of TRACES/fades, my new performance work that considers Alzheimer’s and our national inability to remember history.
The cast for this section includes Valda Setterfield, Molly Powell, and Amelie Champagne Lyons. Music is by composer Daniel Levy; video is by Lauren Petty and Shaun Irons.
The showing will take place at HERE Art Center (west of Sixth Avenue, south of Spring Street) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 25 and 26. Please note: The new entrance is on the side street below Spring Street. Admission is $8.
There are two other works-in-progress excerpts both nights; ours will be the first on the bill each evening.
This project is supported by a HARP residency at HERE and by commissioning funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. This section was written during a residency at Yaddo.

“2 D-D-Detritus: Collage Only” is the latest installment of “Art From Detritus: Recycling With Imagination”, an annual exhibit of art that has been bringing attention to the critical issue of too much trash since 1994 by inviting artists to participate from around the world who use throw–aways to create their art. The exhibit is curated and conceived by Vernita Nemec, an artist who has been creating art from discarded materials for the past decade.
This exhibit of Detritus Art focuses on the medium of collage, art that is made of cut or torn fragments glued together. Traditionally collage is thought of as art of paper fragments, found and saved. In this exhibit, however, the artists include other found fragments, not necessarily of paper, but also fabric, bark, glass, rubber, string, and materials that stretch the definition of collage, but do not go into the 3rd dimension by becoming assemblage, two art forms capitalized on in the early 20 th century by artists seeking to broaden the definition of what art is.
Since the beginning of time, artists have been creating from trash- the “detritus of life” — for a host of reasons: the beauty and accessibility of the old and discarded, its spiritual and emotional significance and its cheapness. Artists today are also attracted to trash for financial and aesthetic reasons, but now, because of the overabundance of trash threatening our health and planet, politics have entered the picture.
By using society’s wastes as material to make their art, these artists are not only communicating the importance of recycling, but they are doing it. The Detritus exhibits initially were inspired when Nemec attended her first Recycling Conference. Since curating that first Detritus exhibit in Portland, Oregon, she has continued to present Detritus exhibits including hundreds of artists throughout the U.S. for more than a decade.
Many of the artists have been exhibiting with the Detritus shows since their inception in ’94 and others have joined more recently. Past exhibits have been supported by the Kaufmann Foundation, the National Recycling Coalition plus the many galleries and universities that have presented past Detritus exhibits.

“Endless Junkmail Scroll”, a collage installation & Multi-media performance

Huntington : In Vernita Nemec’s Endless Junkmail Scroll, the viewer is confronted with a tapestry of textures and symbolic meanings: the artist’s answer to all that junk mail we receive that tries to convince us to borrow money, open more charge accounts or accept services we don’t need. The 100 foot artwork is also a creative reflection on the information overload and complexity of life in 21 st century America. In conjunction with the exhibition, Nemec will present an adaptation of a new performance first presented at the Pompidou Centre in Paris on Saturday June 17, th at 3 PM with composer and musician Sean Carolan who has created original music for this event.
The artist’s process is ongoing in the creation of this “cutting edge” collage (with more tearing & burning than cutting). As sections of the scroll are sold (by linear inch), the scroll is closed, re-collaged and re-connected, keeping the work in constant transition. Nemec transforms the scroll for each exhibition. The scroll’s torn fragments and burned edges gives the impression of an aged document, saved for posterity. The value we attach to ephemera is explored both aesthetic and philosophically in this scroll of security envelopes that the artist has ‘snaked’ around the gallery.
Critic Ed McCormack calls Nemec’s scroll “a defining, career-crowning achievement… Encapsulating the philosophy of aesthetic ecology that prompted her to found the Art from Detritus movement (art made from recycled materials), …it is a major statement which seems slated to extend this artist’s influence beyond the underground where it has too long languished as one of the better kept secrets of the avant-garde.”
The artist created her first installation artworks in the mid-70’s, transferring fragments of notes, ideas and the detritus of her artmaking from the walls of her studio to the walls of the gallery like a giant sketch. She has continued creating these installations both as site specific works and as a backdrop for performance artworks in Mexico, Europe and the U.S. A sense of autobiography has continuously permeated Nemec’s art since an early feminist performance in which she swept the corner at Spring & Wooster Streets in Soho where she still lives and works.
Vernita Nemec aka Vernita N’Cognita has been active in the art world as visual artist, performance artist and curator since the late 1960’s when she co-curated X-12, the first feminist art show of the period, and worked with such political art organizations as Artworkers Coalition (AWC), Women Artists in Revolution (WAR), Artists Meeting for Cultural Change . In the 90’s, Nemec served as Director of Artists Talk On Art, interviewing many art world luminaries, and as independent curator at the Henry Street Settlement for the Arts. For the past decade, Nemec has been organizing and independently curating exhibitions of art made from recycled materials called “Art from Detritus.” She is currently director of Viridian Artists, a contemporary art gallery in New York City’s Chelsea.
A recipient of grants from the Jerome Foundation, Artists Space, Franklin Furnace and the Field, Nemec has presented her visual and performance art in the U.S., Mexico, Hungary, Germany, France and Japan. The Endless Junkmail Scroll’s next stops will be Fountain Street Gallery in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and the Schacknow Museum of Art in Plantation Florida.

An environmental installation featuring the work of over thirty international sound artists selected to create a sonic field of information produced with renewable energy, digital technologies, and ecological imagination. Hikers to the back woods location will use bluetooth-enabled devices or transistor radios to receive sonic information through digital downloads and radio transmissions.
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, May 27th, 2006, at 4:00pm (Rain date: June 10).
At the Pine Lake Environmental Campus of Hartwick College, 940 acres of woods in the upper Catskills of New York State, USA. Visitors to the opening are encouraged to spend the night onsite experiencing the audio transmissions and to bring along their camping gear and a Bluetooth enabled device or a transistor radio. Directions and additional information available on the website. Installation will be active May 27th through June 27th, 2006.
The project was initiated and curated by Cary Peppermint and The Department of Ecology Art and Technology, a performative collaborative of artists seeking to create works that explore issues that lie at the intersection between digital media technologies and the environment.

If we encountered a pod-cast, or a streaming radio server in the woods, in the “natural” environment, what kind of information would be distributed? If there was an entity, a life-form, or a “natural” other that disseminated sonic information, wild-information, how would this information sound? This project encourages artists to create audio sound works that imagine the “voice” of the ecological other and explore its translation into the language of digital art technologies.
If “nature” encountered a pod-cast, or a streaming radio server in the woods, in the “natural” environment, what kind of information would be distributed? This project could take on unpredictable, interactive, and experimental dimensions as it also encourages artists to consider themselves as human animals, beings within “nature” producing sound works for unknowable others, e.g. ferns, salamanders, flowers, mosquito, beetles, flowers, deer, coyotes, bear, water, etc.
This project is made possible by support from Hartwick College, The Upper Catskills Community Council for the Arts, the NYSCA, and The Pine Lake Environmental Campus of Hartwick College.

I would like to invite you to an afternoon performance of A SLIGHT HEADACHE
on Saturday June 3rd at 4pm at the Women¹s Studio Center, Inc. 21-25 44

A SLIGHT HEADACHE is a solo movement/theatre work set in the late 1800s, which explores the unusual relationship of a mother and daughter. The mother gives birth to a tiny girl from her forehead and they are inextricably joined, from that moment by their hair. As they journey from America to London, freak show to salon, the daughter struggles for independence while her mother seeks to insure their survival by exploiting their unusual bond. The story introduces a world where medical practice is not yet a science, imagination and invention rule the day, and anything is possible.
The Women’s Center is a lovely new space with abundant natural light and hard wood floors in Long Island City. I am pleased to share this performance in this intimate studio setting I hope that you can join me on June 3rd.

The Idiot King will take you inside the palace to witness God’s visits and the discussions on government policies that are defining the future of the world.
The Idiot King combines video, sound design, movement, official and religious discourses to create a political satire that exposes the ridiculous arguments used by the ruling class. In this show humor is used as a tool to ridicule the ones in power and their reasons for the oppression of minorities. Real facts are mixed up with ridiculous exaggerations, becoming very difficult to tell them apart.

FF Alums Tasha Depp and Norm Magnusson in UNEXPECTED CATSKILLS a thought provoking exhibition of work by seven artists who live in the Catskills and work in a variety of media. Inspired by the Catskill landscape the artists reveal a very different view of the region. We are living in a time when any sense of balance between humans and nature seems to be tipping. Our cultures relationship to nature has evolved into a place arrived at on vacation or visited on television. Working within the natural surroundings of the Catskill Mountains, the artists in this exhibition have created works that turn on the question of our place in this world of conflicting Nature and Culture. In their various ways, these artists show us works that broaden our view toward this region in transition. Curated by Portia Munson.

PARTICIPATING ARTIST DETAILS:
Vincent Bilotta achieves a painterly idealization of nature using the latest computer technology. He visits the sites of famous Hudson River School paintings where he takes numerous photos, brings them back to his computer, and weaves them together creating a modern take on a classic subject. He will be exhibiting a wall size archival K3 print.
Tasha Depp is showing paintings from two different bodies of work; in one she paints close up landscapes in which a piece of garbage caught in the weeds might be mistaken for flowers. In the others, she makes beautiful paintings of wild flowers on trash both collected from the roadside and woods.
Jared Handelsman will be showing his large scale, one of a kind photograms of nocturnal landscapes. Working with this early photo technique, he captures images of the natural world lit by moonlight and artificial means: a flashlight illuminating a garden or the passing headlights of a car piercing the forest landscape at a curve in the road.
Norm Magnusson will be showing new historical markers from his I-75 project. Using the appropriated format of the roadside markers that dot the history-rich Catskill region, he has created his own markers with socially relevant content, using the authority of the format to consider the issues addressed.
Iain Machell creates poetic environmental sculpture. He inscribes military lingo into the natural world by carving text into rocks and dead tree limbs. He will show a rock/text installation and photographs of other installations including one of a log jam in a stream where a log has been carved with the word “target.”
Alexander Queen travels around the Catskills drawing quick sketches of the landscape. Back in his studio he works from these sketches drawing many versions and reworking them over a long period of time. He will be showing a wall of these landscapes.
Susan Wides is a landscape photographer who creates beautiful, voyeuristic, environmental images of the natural world. By shifting the focus of her large format camera she alters the scale of a scene causing the viewer to look at and experience the landscape differently. In one photo a large car dump nestled into the autumn forest is seen as if toy-like through a brightly colored scrim of blurred leaves.
