This most recent solo show by interdisciplinary performer Stanya Kahn is a multimedia play within a play -a tragi-comedy which situates itself within the confines of economic recession and emotional instability. Shempco, a high strung, insomniac loner, wrangles the idea of citizen power, while unnerved by his own unemployment, social alienation, and the florid imagination which drives a play he works on through long nights alone. Sock puppets, a flotation device, songs and dances large and small are lucid and frenetic devices in a tender balance of anxiety and hope. The show, co-directed by acclaimed performer and film director Harry Dodge, includes a wall-sized painting by Alessandra Nichols, a full feathered showgirl outfit and original video and sound design. The fourth in a series, The Ballad continues Kahn’s project of integrating text, image and physicality to create visceral, conceptual performance theater.

The Pauline Oliveros Foundation is pleased to present a synergetic two generations – two worlds show by the mother and daughter artists Alisa and Coco Go in the Gallery at Deep Listening Space, Saturday May 3 through Sunday May 25. Fairleigh Dickinson University Edward Williams College, NJ in 1970 was the first proving grounds for their two generations two worlds of art. This DLS exhibition includes styrofoam sculptures, paintings, artist books, a fabric flag installation, works in handmade paper, two pool installations, sound recordings, a visual music room and a candid video about the artists. Alisa has chosen the works of Coco Go. Coco Go has chosen the works of Alisa. Three works are collaborations between mother and daughter. Together they chose two works by (husband/father) Dr. Heinz I Lippmann. By chance, the works chosen by both artists show the influence of how each hears music.
Alisa’s work is fed by nature, wind, Mythological themes, rock & roll dancing, the early sounds of her mother Emma’s coloratura voice singing arias, and her husband Heinz’s pulsating piano, playing everything from Bach to Bartok to Lota Pearl
on his Hamburg Steinway, rebuilt after his family home fire in Breslau. Her early life in Rome, Italy was peaceful and secure. Her 62 years of married life was fulfilling despite the loss of home, the scattering of family, the near miss of almost not being able to enter the United States, and the difficulty of living without her husband during a two yearlong miracle escape of his own. In the 60’s she evolved a way of punching, hammering and soldering into styrofoam to the force of music. As a result of damage to a muscle in her hand as a child that prevented small hand work, she found that by using her fist she was able to transfer the energies of music and nature into art.
Coco Go’s experience of musics – a Zen, Cagean, flux interpretation of the sounds of food cooking, the sounds in nature from birdsong to wormsong, and the sounds of everyday environments – has spun out transformative healing projects, installations, the making of paper instruments, poetry and artist books. She also was sensitized to music by falling asleep to her father’s constant piano and chamber music played with a consummate order of musicians such as Zvi Zeitlin and David Soyer, drawing her into the “music humor” between them. In the recesses of the mind, War plays a silent partner to survival. From Coco Go’s exodus in 1939 from Hitler’s SS tentacles, through her work of the 80’s in La Push at the Quilleute Reservation, her works signal a strong advocacy for self-sustainability. In the last 15 years she has internalized the principles of Permaculture into her art. Permaculture is the design of our living systems, patterned after nature which cycles waste, giving humans specific skills for living sustainably in surplus and good health.

Pine Plains Vinyl is a print series consisting of Polaroid landscapes superimposed on patterned vinyl. Putting together photographs of exterior scenes with interior domestic material like oilcloth alludes to the more pleasant aspects of everyday life in rural Hudson Valley. To augment this bucolic atmosphere, an audio tape of natural sounds from Ancramdale, New York accompanies this print installation. This idyllic depiction is in sharp counterpoint to Part One, exhibited in April of Greenpoint/ Hudson Tower of Tires Project which focused on the inherent danger of the proposed St Lawrence Cement Plant in the Hudson River Valley.

“Will **** for Peace is a collaborative performance and installation by Los Angeles-based artists Yong Soon Min and Allan deSouza. Will **** for Peace revisits newlywed Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s week-long Peace Bed-In that began on May 26, 1969 at Montreal’s Queen Elizabeth Hotel, and which mobilized their celebrity to publicize peace and love at a critical socio-political moment during the Vietnam War. The group song/chant, Give Peace a Chance, was recorded during the Bed-In, with the help of their numerous guests. Including other references to Yoko Ono’s body of artistic work, Min and deSouza create their own Bed-In, and invite the public to participate in 3 days of live interactive performance. The video, sound and gallery installation will remain on exhibition.
Min and deSouza’s re-visioning of John and Yoko’s remarkably simple yet enduring gesture in support of peace (which itself played on the 1960s’ Sit-Ins for peace), has a poignant resonance in the present climate. In the hyper-militarized world context of the US-led war against Iraq, Will **** for Peace offers a multifaceted and welcome site to engage in dialogue on the interrelated complexities of war, globalization, immigration and nationalism, and to reflect on the roles of art and activism. Their refashioned title spins the social desperation of “will work for food,” and asks each one of us to imagine what we are willing to do for world peace.” Monica Gagnon – curator

max gimblett myth

Thatcher Projects is pleased to announce Myth, an exhibition of new works by Max Gimblett. This exhibition marks a very active year for the artist, including solo shows in Sydney, Auckland, and San Francisco; an exhibition of drawings at Pfizer, Inc.. curated by Lisa Hatchadoorian; and the publication of a major monograph. The monograph, Max Gimblett, will be available at the gallery.
In his most recent works, Gimblett has immersed himself completely in the iconic sculptural shapes for which his work is best known; focusing on the quatrefoil, the oval, and the wheel. The title piece (Myth) is a quadtych of deep ovals in which Gimblett employs very recognizable symbols, i.e. that of the human hand (the artist’s hand) and that of the human skull. These more figural references to physicality and mortality are a key to seeing and understanding Max Gimblett’s work. The artist’s language is a unique blend of the physical, philosophical, the unconscious, and the sublime. An abstract example of the melding of the physical and metaphysical is the painting, Seed, an 80 inch wheel form on which Gimblett has painted a grand, sweeping gesture across the surface of the canvas. Seed’s single calligraphic gesture is straightforward and present, with a subtle grace. It is mark-making that engages you on an instinctual and intuitive level. Lisa Hatchadoorian’s recent essay addresses the artist’s language most
clearly:
In a practice that has shifted in increments from abstraction to figuration to almost total abstraction, Gimblett now weaves in and out of them. He merges influences and bodies of knowledge as diverse as Abstract Expressionism, Zen Buddhism, the archetypes of Jungian analysis, an interest in alchemy, and the various calligraphic tendencies that surface in American and Asian art. These influences . . . can be thought of as threads or strains that a viewer senses a kinship with on a deeper level than just surface visual connections.

The Electric Junkyard Gamelan will be performing two concerts in May at Superfine Gallery in DUMBO on May 9th and 11th. For those who have never seen the group before we perform my original, gamelan inspired, compositions on invented instruments. It’s quite unlike anything you’ve seen before and features musicians Robin Burdulis, Terry Dame, Mary Feaster, Lisa Frisari and Julian Hintz. We’ll be premiering some new tunes and a new instrument so you don’t want to miss it. The May 11th show will be a special Mother’s Day gamelan double bill with Electric Junkyard Gamelan and Gamelan Dharma Swara, the traditional Balinese ensemble complete with dancers from the Indonesian Consulate here in NY. So take your Mom for a delicious brunch before or dinner after at Superfine Restaurant (reservations recommended) and come hear the shimmering sounds of gamelan old and new. Details are below. A trio of female artists creating images inspired by pin-ups, pornography, and pop culture break free of stereotypes and crash the underground boy’s club with Deep Pretty, a collection of new work by Kirsten Easthope, Isabel Samaras and Donavan Crosby appearing at Jonathan Levine’s Tin Man Alley in Philadelphia. Be forewarned: this is not a collection of “chick art” you’ll see no odes to motherhood, hearth and home from these three innovative artists. Instead, Easthope, Samaras and Crosby explore the sweet, sexual, and sometimes twisted icons of femininity.
Easthope draws from mid century pin-up art and paints bosomed beauties on bowling pins to create unique and quirky sculptures. Samaras pulls down the curtain and exposes the naughty nature of 70s TV divas, imagining what would happen if Ginger from Gilligan’s Island and the Bionic Woman bared all for the camera. By contrast, Crosby creates humor and charm in her surreal rendering of animals on adventures on the land, sea and in the air.
