Linda M. Montano is an internationally renowned and pivotal figure in performance art. Since the 1960s she has explored the ways in which art can be used to dissolve the boundaries between art and life. Her influence is wide ranging – she has been featured at museums including The New Museum in New York, MOCA San Francisco and the ICA in London.
This exhibition configures for the first time key art works generated out of Linda M. Montano’s groundbreaking, time-based endurance performances, where art becomes a vehicle for self-transformation. Montano’s distinctly ascetic approach emerges from the confluence of Dada, happenings, her own mystical training as a novice for the Maryknoll nuns, and her practice of yoga.
14 Years of Living Art incorporates two of Montano’s monumental performance works: Seven Years of Living Art (1984-1991) and Another 7 Years of Living Art (1991-1998). Montano conceptualized these performances to align herself with particular experiential states corresponding to the system of chakras, or energy centres, described in yogic philosophy. Each year, she wore monochromatic clothing, spent a portion of every day in a coloured room, and listened to a designated tone, all of which corresponded to the energetic qualities of a specific chakra. She intended to shift her consciousness and “train the mind not to wander, shop around, or buy into the millions of distractions that impinge minute-to-minute.”
The exhibition presents a range of installations by Montano, each referencing her art/life explorations of the seven chakras. Also featured are expressionistic drawings that represent meditations of specific chakra states, and major video works, including Characters Learning to Talk, The Seven Stages of Intoxication, The Seven Spiritual Lives of Linda Montano and Chakraphonics With Jackie Gleason.
During her stay in Montreal Montano will be creating a new work on site in the gallery, and on opening night will present a new art/life performance, Sacramental Chakra Settee, consisting of one-on-one art/life counselling performed with gallery goers. The Chakra Sleepover, presented in collaboration with La Centrale and Rad’a Gallery, will be another Montreal premiere – the artist will host an all-night sleepover exploring the Vedic chakra system as a guiding technology. I am VERY buzzed about my brand new show “Us” that I’ll be premiering in Atlanta at Seven Stages April 4-13. Please forward this e-mail to fun folks in Atlanta. “Us” ricochets between my love affair since childhood with Broadway musicals crosscut to an exploration of home, exile and the injustices lesbian and gay couples face in the good ol’ USA. “Us” is a funny and pissed-off exploration of these most American contradictions as the piece careens from memories of a ten year old’s plan to flee to Canada to escape the war in Viet Nam, to a meditation on why a Southern California child spoke in an English accent, to a tongue-in-cheek guide explaining how NOT to be angry.
Teetering here on the edge of exile, it has been really fun to do this exploration of how musicals informed my queer identity and politics as we grow up. 10. Peggy Diggs, FF Alumn, starts MakeDo, a new public art project.
MakeDo, a new public art project by Peggy Diggs, will be gradually released into the public domain over a period of months, beginning April 1, 2003 through February, 2004. Diggs’ project is one of several that comprise the exhibition Borne of Necessity, organized by the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the University of North Carolina/Greensboro and opening there on February 19, 2004 for a period of twelve weeks. Curated by Ron Platt, the exhibition brings together contemporary artwork that “proactively addresses the situations of those economically dispossessed, and comments on the larger social and political factors that contribute to adverse economic conditions. Central to the project is the desire to counteract stereotypical expectations and portrayals of lower-income existence.”
This first part of MakeDo is soon to be released around the United States. Part One is called Has Money Hurt You?, and consists of a series of questions that Diggs devised which will be stamped on dollar bills and put into circulation. The questions were developed after speaking with people in Greensboro, NC involved in the social services for the poor; with Quakers who follow the principles of Simple Living, some of whom live in intentional communities; and with War Tax Resisters, who Diggs describes as “secondarily, the intentional poor.” Her interviews have been with people who have very little and those who work to help them attain services; people who choose a life of few possessions, living with little and recycling much; and people who refuse to pay taxes on the grounds that 60% of any income tax money goes to support the military, which they believe to be morally wrong. This last group, as a result, typically aims to make only $10,000 a year or less so as not to HAVE to pay taxes. From these conversations, Diggs devised eight questions that she has had made into hand stamps — questions aimed principally at the wealthy. These questions include:
In what ways has money hurt you?
What is satisfied in you by buying things?
What do you think is gained in poverty and lost through wealth?
What if you only had what you needed?
Does this purchase give you any social power?
Where do you find your real security?
Do you feel the need to be paid for everything you do?
When did you last choose ethics over money?
These questions are hand-stamped onto the edges of paper bills of any and all denominations that come into and go out of Diggs’ wallet. In addition, she is sending one stamp each to colleagues in New York City, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., asking them to do the same, sending their printed bills out into the public domain. “I’m interested in projects that originate in public conversations and the questions that are raised relevant to the culture at large. My goal is to reach out to the intended audience in a format relevant to the combination of the values of the project and the targeted audience,” Diggs says. “And although everyone uses money, I think that these questions have particular relevance to the rich. I’m not printing a web-site address or anything else on the bills, so I’m hoping that these ‘authorless’ questions will resonate with those who value the Mighty Dollar above most everything else.”
Interested in where these bills go, Diggs herself is registering each of her own stamped bills with the Where’s George website (www.wheresgeorge.com). People who frequent the website follow site-registered bills, and can report on the cities and states where they show up. She is not asking her colleagues to do the same, as the process is a large time investment. For the record, before beginning this project, Diggs worked with a lawyer to determine whether this stamping was legal, as she did not want the stamped bills to be taken out of circulation; it is deemed legal.

It’s 1970. The American military has for years been hopelessly bogged in an unpopular war in a foreign landscape. Drawing attention to their cause and hoping to force concessions, Middle Eastern terrorists hijack commercial airplanes. The American economy lies wounded and sluggish and the country is divided and anxious. A movie hits the nation’s pre-multiplex screens that mixes personal drama, the uncontrollable forces of nature, an individual act of desperation, and latent human fears of flying. Based on the novel by Arthur Hailey, Airport spawns a whole genre of disaster films including Towering Inferno, The Poseidon Adventure, and Earthquake as well as Airport ’75, Airport ’77, and Airport ’79: Concorde. It’s 2003, and contemporary artists are finding anxiety in the air. HEREart presents a short, informal, and perhaps timely survey.
Christoph Draeger has been reconstructing the elements of disaster for some time. His 2 channel video piece “Crash” starts with vintage military footage of warplanes (and the Hindenburg) meeting a bad end, segues into government footage of staged crashes, splurges on sometimes campy Hollywood renditions of air disaster, and finishes with somber images of the space shuttle Challenger.
Radek Szczesny uses the familiar silhouette of the Challenger explosion as the subject of minimalist paintings and drawings that exercise his own formal vocabulary.
The Associated Artists for Propaganda Research make work focusing on the myths and fallibility of secret government projects and large corporations. AARP also maintains a website of information on alternative media sources. AARP’s “The Shadow” depicts an F-117 crashed in a desert landscape.
Skúta enlarges details from airline safety cards for an environment to engage viewer’s own anxieties, situated somewhere between dreaming and awakening.
Peter Staley’s “Try all 3 Views” depicts New York City attacked by a threat from the sky. Anxious New Yorkers scurry for the safety of another form of transportation-one that operates flipside of the surface of the earth from air flight-the subway.
Guy Hundere provides a poetic break in the anxiety. His planes follow the graceful formations of migrating birds. But then again, so do military jets…

Underlying rhythms of the city – crowd movement, dreams of glory, ambient sound, and memories of place – recur throughout the Digital Downtown exhibition. The work maps visual and aural poetries from the patterns and clutter which result from too many people in too little space.
New Yorkers have a special, intimate relationship with their city’s architecture. So much so that the architecture becomes icons for the city itself. Perhaps the reason for it is that in Manhattan, one of the most densely populated islands in the world, the very transportation, architecture, and geography are symbols of the connection a tourist or resident may have with the city.

eART
Willoughby Sharp and his partners, Duff Schweninger and Se Yeon Lee, announce the formation of eART, a collective of artists and media producers devoted to the production, proliferation, and preservation of advanced contemporary art, using twenty-first century digital technology.
Since the late 19601s, a vast archive of artistic information (audio and video interviews, photographs, films, and video programs) has been accumulated. Media programs devoted to Vito Acconci, Joseph Beuys, Chris Burden, Terry Fox, Dennis Oppenheim, Keith Sonnier, William Wegman, and many others had been produced by 2000.
We have continued to document these artists’ work as well as that of John Ahearn, Jene Highstein, Joan Jonas, Joseph Nechvatal, Michele Oka Doner, Tom Otterness, Alan Scarritt, Duff Schweninger, John Torreano, Tom Warren, Lawrence Weiner, and others.
eART is now engaged in an evaluation of the available archives of late twentieth century cutting edge art and intends to transfer much of this information into a variety of current media formats. The programs that eART will be distributing can be ordered in any of the following contemporary formats: CD, Audio Cassette, VCD, DVD 3/4 Umatic, VHS NTSC, VHS PAL, Beta, Beta PAL, and Digital Beta.

“Desarme/Disarm”, a proposal from the art practice, to propitiate a reflection about the war, the violence, the gun culture and the systems of national security, in this century. Artists of diverse countries of the world will be summoned simultaneously on April 25-27 2003 to carry out different artistic proposals, in very diverse contexts, in this reflection day on the meaning of a war in this era of human evolution.
The proposal of “Desarme/Disarm” consists of
* To summon the realization of events or artistic acts internationally between April 25 to 27, with performance art as its core discipline, but without excluding other artistic manifestations.
* To publish the acts carried out all over the world, not only inside the art circuit.
* To encourage other future initiatives.
“Desarme/Disarm” will gather all material, from the initial proposals to their practical materialization, keeping the documentation at the website http://desarme.perfopuerto.org

What do the Department of Defense and the computer gaming industry have in common? What kinds of strategic alliances is the Pentagon making with Hollywood? How is the American Institute of Architects connecting with the military’s designs for a “new security environment?” Are artists collaborating with, exposing, or resisting the military by deploying technologies of simulation, data surveillance, tracking, and computer vision in their work?
A group of internationally renowned panelists explore these and other questions in The Future of War: Aesthetics, Politics, Technologies, a two-day conference that examines the increasingly complex exchanges between the military, the entertainment industry, the computer industry, the media and artists. What impact do these exchanges have on war, technology and related visual cultures in the American public sphere?
The conference looks at war not simply as a utilitarian means to an end but as a cultural process involving particular ways of seeing, narrating, and imagining. The conference will focus on the architectural spaces of war, the cinematic language of Hollywood combat films, online gaming and military simulations, and the computer and installation work of artists.

Radar, 3-D computer graphics, tracking devices, covert
data-gathering,nrobots, and computer vision have become
ubiquitous technologies of warfare and play an integral
role in maintaining “homeland security.” These technologies
have long been a rich source of interest to artists engaged
in the subjects of surveillance, control, and military
imaging. Curators, artists, and human rights activists

Grahame Weinbren’s talk, titled “In the Ocean of Streams of Stories,” is centered on the problematics of interactivity. What expressive possibilities does it open? How is it connected with concepts of non- and multi-linearity? Is the notion of interactive narrative a useful one, or is it no more than old wine in new bottles? What are the psychological and ideological implications of interactivity? Weinbren will discuss and present his own projects in the light of these questions, which take on a particular currency as computer interfaces are increasingly integrated into our environments, from toys and games, to kitchen gadgets, to advanced weapons of warfare.
Grahame Weinbren has worked in film and video since the early 1970s and was one of the first artists to incorporate interactivity with the moving image in the work The Erl King (1983-86). His interactive cinema installations have been exhibited internationally since 1984. TUNNEL (2000), a large scale interactive environment, was made in collaboration with architect James Cathcart for a disused coal-mine in the Ruhr Valley, and his three-screen interactive cinema installation Frames, based on the first photographs of mental patients, was commissioned by the NTT/ICC in Tokyo for its 1999 Biennial. Frames was recently exhibited in “Interactive Legends” at the Kitchen in New York. Weinbren’s documentary film George, made in collaboration with Henry Corra, was broadcast in 2000 on HBO. Weinbren has been an editor of the Millennium Film Journal since 1985, and his writings on cinema, new technology, and media art have been widely published. He is on the faculty of the graduate division of the School of Visual Arts and has recently been a visiting artist in the Department of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard.

THEATER FOR THE NEW CITY, a Pulitzer Prize winning community center, is An expert in the art of festival creation, having originated the world-famous Village Halloween Parade and many other free cultural events. TNC’s Village Writers on the Village (1976) featured the premiere of Harvey Fierstein’s INTERNATIONAL STUD, which later became the centerpiece of TORCH SONG TRILOGY. The Village Halloween Parade was sponsored by TNC during its first two years, during which time it won a special OBIE Award.
THEATER FOR THE NEW CITY also held a Christmas Pageant (1990 1999) that entertained shelter children while they waited to get presents and hot cocoa from Santa Claus at the local police precinct; and an Eco-Fest where artists voiced their concern about the earth. THEATER FOR THE NEW CITY was the only community center to hold a protest against the original Gulf War. Called STOP THE WAR: A FESTIVAL FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST, it won an 1991 OBIE citation.
TNC¹s current annual community festivals include the LOWER EAST SIDE FESTIVAL FOR THE ARTS, a 3-day extravaganza celebrating the ethnic and artistic diversity of the Lower East Side area (May 23 25), and the HALLOWEEN BALL (October 31).

Greetings in this dark time: When I finally can’t help myself, and sometimes just by accident I stop in front of a television and there is the war and there is death and there is the body shocking realization that WE ARE PAYING FOR IT!
And so we invite you to REVEREND BILLY’S PEACE REVIVAL AND TAX REVOLT at St. Mark’s Church at 7 with the War Resistor’s League to introduce different law honoring ways to STOP SHOPPING FOR BOMBS.
After our strange worship we will go preaching on the steps of the 34th Street Post Office; talk to those late-filers. The Stop Bombing Gospel Choir will keep us joyous. Peace makers Granny D and Liza Jessie Peterson will perform and inspire. “Village Anna” Sawaryn, will be canonized into Fabulous Sainthood for her intrepid fight to save the east village from Cooper Union. And we will baptize a new child, MIRANDA LEE REALITY TORN. JOIN THIS PARTY. STOP BOMBING. STOP SHOPPING

Hi Everyone,
Next Friday April 18th I am premiering Major Asia, a monthly Asian music party, at Otto’s Shrunken Head Tiki Lounge. I will be spinning 60’s garage rock from Japan, Cambodia, Singapore and Turkey, Beijing punk, Hong Kong hip-hop, Bollywood and Arabic grooves (with some North African stuff thrown in for good measure) and more all night long from 9pm. At 10pm there will be a performance by Japanese punk band Peelander-Z. Admission is FREE, cheap drinks. Invitation is attached. Hope to see you there!!
