My short experimental film, “In A Waken,” (based on an excerpt from John Cage’s “Root of an Unfocus”, 1944) performed by Anthony de Mare is being presented at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival in Germany (May 1-6).My latest short experimental film, “Double Fiesta”, inspired by/based on Meredith Monk’s composition performed by Anthony de Mare with an appearance by Eli Myers is premiering at the Taos Talking Pictures Festival in New Mexico, April (10-14). Coming to the Tribeca Film Festival May 6-11th, check later for the exact times.

In conjunction with the Words on Fire project of the New Arts Council, the gallery has invited Dread Scott to exhibit a portion of his most recent project, “Lockdown.” This work-in-progress examines the unheard stories of prison inmates through black and white portraits, recorded interviews, and written text.
“The difference between me and the President is that I’m forced, and other people like me are forced, to commit crimes. The crimes he commit, he commit ’em for luxury, pleasure and things of that nature…That’s why he commit crimes. But his crimes don’t go punished. Mine do. Because I have no power. I have no economics. I have no what they call influence on society…”

Noon in the College Center
Billy X. Curmano will celebrate the holiday magic of April Fools with performance art, spoken word, poetry, “riff-rap,” and formal compositions that segue into free-form improvisations. A seasoned performer, he often discards key and time signatures to explore the space between traditional notes with multi-tonal variations from the electric dulcimer, vibraphone, mbira and ocean harp as music, noise and voice struggle and vie for prominence. Surprises and additional curious instrumentation are in store with appearances from members of his New X Art Ensemble.
MORE ON BILLY:
Billy X. Curmano is a new traditionalist who uses an unusual blend of jazz-inspired performance, poetry, music and movement along with an odd assortment of instruments to create what he calls “riff-rap.”
Besides musical experimentation, Curmano is a former McKnight Foundation Interdisciplinary Art Fellow best known for eccentric performances like being buried alive in 1983, or the “Tiger Cage on Wheels” that drew attention to the plight of political prisoners. Then there was the more whimsical “performance for cows”with a tuxedoed “New X” playing to a herd n a Minnesota pasture complete with a bus load of baffled tourists.
In 1997, he became the first person in recorded history to swim from the source of the Mississippi River over 2,000 miles to the Gulf of Mexico in an extended performance, environmental statement, and water ballet. He marked the Millennium with a 40-day performance art fast in Death Valley.

Greenpoint / Hudson Tire Project
April 2nd – April 26th, 2003
Opening Reception: April 2nd, 5-8pm
The Tower of Tires will symbolize the toxic fumes generated by a cement plant covering over 1600 acres to be located in the historic Hudson Valley a few miles south of Hudson, New York. The Tower of Tires will involve the local community through after-school programs and participation in the hands-on building of the project.
Spewing from the forty foot Tower Of Tires, the excrescence from a burning torch will represent the noxious spread of toxic fumes generated by the proposed new plant. These effluents will layer up over agricultural and scenic lands until prevailing east wind distributes this pollution on an ever widening path to the Atlantic ocean, spreading over Columbia and Dutchess Counties, across The Berkshires, Connecticut and Maine, from New York Harbor to Labrador. A sound track will augment sight and smell, conveying both danger and spoken statistics.
Part 1 opens on April 2 at Art Resources Transfer Inc. (212 691-5956) 210 Second Avenue #403 (betw 24th &25th St) through April 26. Upstate Projects brings attention to the danger of a proposed St Lawrence Cement Plant in the Hudson River Valley, and is a preview of Tower of Tires, a site specific upstate project. In contrast to a dire scenario of industrial blight, an audio tape plays sounds of nature from Columbia County.
Part 2 will follow in May and will present a further counterpoint to the prospect of the poisonous cement plant with a series of prints entitled Pine Plains Vinyl. These prints, consisting of Polaroid landscape photographs superimposed on oil cloth, combine exterior and interior imagery and refer to everyday domestic life and the bucolic Hudson Valley.
