We invite you to an Artist¹s Reception on Thursday, May 5th, from 5pm to 8pm
Projected Histories envisions the human body, the book and sections of medieval paintings as a single entity, visually blurring the viewer’s understanding between what is real and what is fabricated; can we believe or trust the image as truth. In medieval times, the book was considered to be a rare and valuable object symbolizing power and sacredness. Performing before a camera, a human model serves as a screen over which images of saints holding books from medieval paintings are projected. Overlaid onto the human torso the body makes its own sculptural forms and is the medium through which we either consciously or unconsciously express ourselves.
The two-dimensional paintings of the saints are mutated by the contours of the human body into a living form, visually confusing the source of information. Projecting selectively cropped images of classical paintings onto a human torso creates the illusion of a flat picture becoming fleshy, visually confusing the lines of the painting and human torso. In this integration of the sacred and the profane, knowledge symbolically becomes tactile, sensual, even erotic.
Doug Beube was born in Hamilton, Canada. He received his BFA in film from York University, Toronto, ON and an MFA from the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY. He is curator of The Book Under Pressure, a private collection for Allan Chasanoff in New York City. He lives and works in New York. His work can be found in the collections of the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, ON, the Black Eagle Apothecary Museum-Istvan Kiraly Museum, Budapest, Hungary, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, NY, Double Day Publishers, Long Island. 30/30: ANNIVERSARY OF THE VIETNAM WAR’S END
During this time of WAR, there is a PEACE to remember. Thirty years ago on the thirtieth of this month the Vietnam War ended. Everyone is invited to an anniversary celebration of peace and reconciliation on April 30th at the Green Lantern, 571 East Third Street in Winona. Festivities begin Saturday evening at 8 p.m. Veterans and the general public are welcome to attend and share their stories.
The extravaganza is anchored by a simulated live radio show with “Dr. Bob” and Billy X., a Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) regional contact for Minnesota. Highlights include a report on the “Peace and Reconciliation” water ceremony and art exhibition that will bring both Vietnamese and American Vietnam War Veterans together for the first time in Homer Alaska this May. It will be followed by “Where Were You Then?” and “Where Are We Now?” audience participation segments and the always snappy house band. A concert from The New X Art Ensemble featuring the Amazing Tess Toster Tones with some very special guests will round out the evening’s entertainment.
Commemoration events marking 30 years since the end of the war are currently taking place throughout Vietnam, with special events planned to mark the dates of key clashes. The Vietcong’s assault on the strategically important town of Buon Ma Thuot (Vietnam) on March 10th began a series of military reverses culminating in the fall of the port city of Danang on the 29th and Saigon the following day. The Vietnamese celebrations will culminate in Ho Chi Minh City, the former Saigon, on April 30th – to mark the date the city fell, finally ending the brutal war.
No matter the history or your memories of the times, it’s always good when war is finally over. Chris Hedges, the New York Times war correspondent once wrote: “War forms its own culture. It distorts memory, corrupts language, and infects everything around it…. War exposes the capacity for evil that lurks not far below the surface within all of us. Even as war gives meaning to sterile lives, it also promotes killers and racists.”

Printed Matter is very pleased to announce a book launch for Volumes One and Two of Jordan Crandall’s project Under Fire: The Organization and Representation of Violence. Many of the contributors to this series of dialogues between artists, political scientists, critics, activists and journalists will be present at the event to sign copies of the book and answer any questions about the year-long project that led to its publication. Organized by Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in collaboration with V2 Institute for the Unstable Media, Rotterdam, Under Fire addresses the new forms of militarized agencies that are emerging today. It attempts to understand the nature of emergent power and the forms of resistance to it, situating cycles of violence within the modalities of a global system. It looks at the role that representations play as registers of symbolic meaning and as agents of affective change — exploring the ways that violence materializes as both act and image.
Published in two chronologically organized volumes, the book covers the conflux of battle simulation and news programming; democracy and violence; the privatization of the military; the militarization of urban space; architectures and ontologies of targeting; cultures of suspicion; the epistemology of global infrastructures; the exhibition of atrocity; panopticism and disappearance; simulated and imagined constructions of territory; and the corporate use of force.

In the project CitySellingCityTelling, artists explore various aspects of urban identity. CitySellingCityTelling will, as the title suggests, take a critical look at the commercialization of city identity and will examine how the narratives of a city are invented, controlled and disseminated. CitySellingCityTelling will also explore different alternative ways of occupying the field of culture. The ‘triumph of capitalism’ is also clear through the simplification of aesthetics and of cultural life as such produced by tourist offices and marketing strategies aiming for a controlled narrative of the city, leaving out representation of the pluralistic multitude of citizens and their histories. Instead of public interventions, one might more aptly refer to the projects taking part in CitySellingCityTelling as forms of public integration.
By inviting (street-)communities, social networks, and activist strategies and movements to represent themselves and operate within the frame of the project CODE:RED, Tadej Pogacar suggests how the activities of these self-organized networks, operating globally at street-level, can offer a better spotlight and more differentiated representation than official monuments and other semi-historical touristic motives.
When the US pulled out of Vietnam the Tai sex industry faced a worrying cut in profits. The sex business in partnership with the tourist industry and the government decide to attract new type of client, so tourists replaced military personnel. Trafficking increased.
CODE:RED Trafficking Topographies is in Berlin premiering a new board game Monapoly. The game aims to spread knowledge about trans-national trafficking in humans.

Ana Lopes is an international sex workers’ rights activist, having worked in the industry herself and being a member of several international sex workers’ organisations. She is the Branch President of the Sex Workers GMB Union Branch and she is a visiting lecturer at the University of East London, in the school of Social Sciences.
CitySellingCityTelling is part of the project Urban Art Stories that ties together Copenhagen, Berlin, and Malmö in a joint cultural manifestation comprising a total of 29 participant projects. Urban Art Stories takes shape through the joint efforts of partners in Copenhagen, Berlin, and Malmö.

CLASS CREATES ‘APRIL SHOWERS’ BOOK EXHIBIT
The Boise State University English Department’s Introduction to Book Arts class is taking a cue from spring’s rainy weather for their “April Showers” book exhibit, on view now thru May 16, in the first floor of the Liberal Arts Building on the BSU campus.
Students created books using “dissolvo” water-soluble paper, which is popular among spy enthusiasts and their instructor, Tom Trusky, who is producing a dissolving book this coming fall. The class was encouraged to take advantage of the paper’s dissolving capabilities and create books that complement its unique qualities.
For example, student Carrie Applegate created a catalog for the fictional “Queue & Co.,” an upscale spy outfitter and “suppliers of fine espionage equipment since 1952.” The spy tome is hidden inside a West Elm home catalog.
Student Kenji Hyde used the paper’s qualities to reflect an internal struggle. He used a “hidden room” structure for his book. It is constructed out of one piece of paper and contains an internal chamber. Hyde uses this “room” to house memories, images of terrible events that can’t be washed away.
