A ‘comedy-about-hate’!
What does Vicki Weaver, a separatist in Oregon, married to Randolph Weaver, and shot dead by an FBI marksman holding her baby in her arms, have in common with Rae C Wright — a single, child-free New York artiste? And what’s so funny about that? Come to Dixon Place – join Rae and some young friends explore these moments for some of April laughter, reflection, and identification, “Vicki Weaver & I….” — directed by the incomparable Merri Milwe.

From the legendary US performance artist Ron Athey comes a major new production; The Judas Cradle, created in collaboration with operatic Soprano Juliana Snapper. Taking its title from a medieval torture device, Athey’s visceral performance creates an extraordinary spectacle of suffering, sacrifice and transcendence.

Marjorie Kouns, FF Alumn, presents Well-Lit Chess Pieces, project for Washington Square Park- NYC
“Well-Lit Chess Pieces” is a two-part project consisting of 11 large-scale chess game pieces, clustered in the Chess Corner of Washington Sq. Park, and 26 lampshades covers with dangling fringe made of glass chess pieces that will hang over the park’s four corner lampposts. Sponsored in part by Starbucks Neighborhood Park Grants Program, the entire installation will take place from Saturday, April 23rd through Summer 2005. The Chess sculptures are placed in a strategic position at the chess corner and are tests of the viewer’s choice as to where the next best move can be made. The lampshade designs are tendril-like marks similar to an artificial intelligence model called Thinking Machine 4.
I’m testing the attraction people have with public spaces and how they instinctively desire to make them part of their own property. In this case I’m producing lamp covers in a reading lamp style that you would use in your living room, making the park you very own outdoor living area to enjoy. The test of the chess topiary-like pieces is to attract everyone from novice to expert and cause each one to interact by observing game strategy, order & chance moves that essentially mimic nature and life itself.

4. John Boone, FF Alumn, announces outdoor artwork in Brooklyn
FF Alumn John Boone and Worldwide Frames are pleased to announce the completion of John Boone’s “Ten Landscapes Going Around a Corner,” a hand painted, outdoor artwork at the intersection of Morgan Avenue and Scholes Street in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Bruce Engel, President of Worldwide Frames, has commissioned this artwork to compete with the graffiti and add a different perspective to the neighborhood.
“The subject is landscape in the industrial section of East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Surrounding this artwork are blocks and blocks of brick factories, industrial structures and warehouses. My artwork is a collection of states of mind, each triggering a landscape. This work lives as a collection of prompts for thoughts of landscape in a place of urban industry where other stories predominate.”

“Ten Landscapes Going Around a Corner” is made from ten colloquial phrases, loosely reminiscent of landscape and hand painted in a fluorescent lime green digital font. The structure of digital text going around a corner has a nod to Times Square message readers with flowing text while the industrial Brooklyn location gives the project an incongruous perch.
John Boone is an artist who works with words, phrases, colloquial expressions, signatures, signs, spices, postcards, paint, glass and airplanes. He designed the digital font used in this mural as well as in all his studio work. His work also consists of permanent glass block murals in Jersey City, New Jersey, to texts being towed by planes in New England and Germany, to a spice blend called “Uh Huh” sold in specialty food stores, to paintings on canvas, paper and mylar, to postcards, to texts on building exteriors and programmed texts for message readers. He has shown in the United States, Europe and has work in public and private collections internationally including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He was a Rockefeller Bellagio resident in 2001.

Mark Your Calendars!
OK, I know this may seem early but I wanted to get the word out to my art friends that I will be having an art opening on Saturday, May 14, 4-7 at the Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park. This will be a culmination of my COLA fellowship from the City of LA. I am madly working on completing three new limited edition artist’s books. They are:
Offerings at the Crossroads, based on the video Sea of Time and about trying to get pregnant while my dear friend Mark was dying from AIDS. The text is about a journey between birth and death as Sue and I, and Mark, and his partner Roger, travel to Bali together. The design of the book is based on the traditional palm leaf books of Bali.
Frogskin, based on the video installation Once Upon a Time. The content deals with the disappearance of frogs presented as an erotic text from a betrayed lover. The book uses the snake fold with pull-out panels and the lush imagery is scanned foliage.
Marriage Matters, is based on the Sears portrait projects that Sue Maberry and I have done about redefining family. For this one we invited lesbian and gay couples to have portraits taken and then reflect upon marriage and their relationship. It also tells the story of our 26 years of love. The book contains a pop-up wedding cake.
May 14 will be the grand culmination of these projects and I will be delighted to share them with friends and colleagues. So note that date and I’ll send you another reminder closer to May 14. Thanks for your support!
