Theodora Skipitares presents TRILOGY, bringing together for the first time a cycle of works which examine the Trojan War. IPHIGENIA features events leading up to the Trojan War, HELEN examines the war itself and its alleged cause, Helen of Troy, and ODYSSEY: THE HOMECOMING presents the post-war dilemmas of the hero ODYSSEUS. 2 different plays will be performed each evening, and on Sundays, all three plays will be presented. Each play features a variety of puppetry styles, and features original music by Arnold Dreyblatt Tim Schellenbaum, and Yukio Tsuji. Gigantic ArtSpace [GAS] presents Object Lessons, a group exhibition of seven emerging artists from the media-saturated terrain of Southern California.
Part technological history, part emergent media, and part theoretical response to these media and their innovators, Object Lessons investigates the current debates of communications literacy and the extent to which we are constituted by our technologies.
Contributors:
Kelli Cain and Brian Crabtree:Almost Certified (Grade-A noise for non-discerning consumers) is a distributed network of sixteen precarious egg-tapping robots. Each individually amplified unit features a select unconventional egg. Calculated sequences emerge, conducted by beautifully rendered software on a resurrected mainframe (a sweet Mac LC3).
Peter Cho:Takeluma is an invented writing system for representing speech sounds and the visceral responses they can evoke. The project explores the ways that speech sounds can give rise to a kinesthetic response. The Takeluma project explores the complex relationships between speech, meaning, and writing and comprises several animated, sculptural, and print works.
Sean Dockray:Cabinet is based on a research project in which the recorded and archived the applauses he has received as a performer and in doing so has documented the temporary moments when we leave our isolated bodies and become part of a collective body, with its own temperament and desires. The cabinet itself is a homemade device that has been designed around its contents, much like a library’s card catalog furniture is based on the dimensions of a single index card.
Nate Harrison:Can I Get An Amen? is an audio installation that unfolds a critical perspective of perhaps the most sampled drums beat in the history of recorded music, the Amen Break. The work attempts to bring into scrutiny the techno-utopian notion that ‘information wants to be free.’ it questions its effectiveness as a democratizing agent.
Tom Jennings:Story Teller is a self-contained system for telling stories, which are stored as rows of tiny holes in long spools of paper tape. The stories are on a wide range of subjects, but they are all about text, mediation, representation and deconstruction.
The Center for Integrated Media is an interdisciplinary, peer-to-peer experiential learning and studio environment for CalArts graduate students and visiting artists wanting to explore and critique computer programming, interactive systems, the Internet, digital video and digital audio technologies as part of their artwork. The Center is designed for artists whose work has reached an advanced degree of development and who possess the desire to integrate multiple forms of media into new modes of expression, while opening up critical dialogues between artists, scientists and writers on issues related to new forms of media.
An electronic catalogue, co-produced by CalArts and Gigantic ArtSpace, is forthcoming.

From a gay teen’s head-on collision with life in a sleazy hotel across the street from the Hollywood Bowl to an ecstatic vision of a positive future on a mattress in a police holding cell, the show is a kinky and funny journey thru the beds and hotels and life on the road as a traveling salesman- oops I mean a performance artist! I was doing the math recently and I figured that if I continue to tour as a performer for another twenty years, I will end up sleeping in at least 1000 hotel beds in my lifetime on the road. For maximum poetic oomph, let’s say 1001 beds! Yikes!

I’m showing two projects at Round 23 at Project Row Houses, Houston, TX. The projects include reprinted banners from Finding Home at Deborah’s Place in Chicago, IL, banners designed with formerly homeless women with images and text aimed at the public passing by on the street; and the flags, recycled clothing (with new clothing labels inserted, consisting of questions aimed at the poor); and rubber stamps with which viewers can stamp questions aimed at the rich onto the margins of paper currency. The show opened Saturday, March 25 and runs to the end of May.

Primary Duties & Internship benefits:
The Arts Administration intern in the NYSCA Dance Program has the opportunity to participate in the myriad activities of the Dance Program. These activities include everything from general word processing and filing, to reorganization of the Director’s files, cataloguing and assignment of audits, compilation of the funding allocation master list, statistical analysis, and attendance at application review, Dance Panel and Council meetings. These meetings can afford an inside view of the artistic and fiscal workings of an organization, and the Dance Panel and Council meetings represent the funding process in action.
It is possible for an intern working in the Dance Program to learn about the complexities of arts funding, and to gain more awareness of the problems and needs of the field. Also, the intern works closely with the Dance Program Director and communicates with applicant organizations through telephone, letter and email.
The hours range from 15 to 20 hours per week and are quite flexible.

It’s a live taping for the upcoming feature documentary, Guest Of Cindy Sherman. H-O delivers a monologue from the stage. The Huron Club is located under the Soho Playhouse. No admission but must be willing to sign a release.

The exhibition, Have You Eaten Yet? The Chinese Restaurant in America opens on April 5 at the Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia (AKMP) and will be on display through September 10, 2006. On loan from the Museum of Chinese in the Americas (MoCA) in New York City, the exhibition provides a national context with AKMP adding images, films and programs featuring the rich history of Philadelphia’s Chinatown. This critically acclaimed exhibition received national attention in a September 22, 2004, New York Times review where Yong Chen, history professor at the University of California, Irvine, and co-curator of the exhibition said, “The Chinese restaurant has become part of our consciousness. It is quintessentially American.”
“Have you eaten yet?” is a standard Chinese greeting sharing the same connotation as “How are you?” Its incorporation into the daily vernacular attests to the significance of food in Chinese culture, where meals are a fusion of art and entertainment and a venue for dialogue and reconnecting with family, friends and guests. Without fanfare, Chinese food merchants over the last 150 years have successfully introduced Chinese culture to America through their cuisine. According to Chinese Restaurant News, the 36,000 Chinese restaurants in the United States now outnumber the combined number of McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger Kings.
Through menus, souvenirs, glassware, postcards, scrapbooks and vintage radio commercials, Have You Eaten Yet? explores the topics and themes surrounding Chinese immigration and the assimilation of Chinese culture in the United States. Often the first introduction to Chinese culture for many Americans, the Chinese restaurant has functioned since the 19 th century as a site of cultural exchange. Have You Eaten Yet? spans two centuries of American Chinese restaurants, from the earliest “chow chow” restaurants of the West in the mid-1800s, to the nightclub dinner shows of the 1940s, through President Nixon’s visit to China renewing interest in “authentic” Chinese cuisine in the 1970s, up through the take-out culture of today.
The Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia adds objects and images from Philadelphia’s Chinese restaurant community to the exhibition. A trunk, c. 1910, belonging to Henry Tinchin Loo, who owned the “Orient Restaurant” on 11 th Street in Philadelphia, is on display along with teapots and a lamp, c. 1960, from one of Loo’s restaurants. These items are part of the Balch Institute Collection at AKMP. Menus dating from 1925 to the present from Philadelphia restaurants such as The Golden Dragon Restaurant, Shangri-La Chinese American Restaurant, China Royal, The Golden Gate, Pagoda, King Joy Café, the Cathay Tea Garden, Joseph Poon Asian-Fusion Restaurant and Susanne Foo are on exhibition. Other photographs of Chinese restaurant dining are included in the show courtesy of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Urban Archives, Samuel Paley Library of Temple University, and Robert Skaler.
Have You Eaten Yet? melds food history, art and personal stories with an engaging design by exhibition designers Pei Hsieh and Stephanie Reyer. Hsieh and Reyer, along with co-curators Cynthia Lee and Yong Chen, examine the saga of Chinese restaurants through the collection of Harley Spiller. Also known as “Inspector Collector,” Spiller is a New York City writer, collector and teacher. The installation at AKMP is organized by Cynthia Little, Ph.D., Historian and Director of Interpretive Programming, and is designed by Assemblage, Inc.

About the Exhibition
Have You Eaten Yet?: The Chinese Restaurant in America was organized by the Museum of Chinese in the Americas, New York City, and made possible with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency, and MoCA members. About Cynthia Lee, Exhibition Co-Curator
Cynthia Lee received her BA from Vassar College and her MA and M.Phil in Sociocultural Anthropology from Columbia University. Lee oversees and integrates the work of MoCA’s Program, Collection and Education staff. She served for three years as a panelist for the New York State Council on the Arts (2001-2004), and has lent her expertise in exhibition development, oral history, research and graphics design to arts organizations in the New York area.
About Yong Chen, Exhibition Co-Curator
Yong Chen received his Ph.D. from Cornell University and is associate professor of history at the University of California, Irvine, where he also serves as the University’s Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. His research on diverse topics such as Chinese American history, United States ethnic food, and higher education has been published in various leading academic journals in the United States and China.
About Harley Spiller, Collector/Lender
Harley Spiller has been a museum administrator in New York City for 25 years. His collection contains over 10,000 menus and artifacts related to Chinese restaurants around the world dating to the 19 th century. Named in 2005 as the Guinness World Record holder for “most menus,” Spiller serves as Associate Editor of the Chinese gourmet magazine, Flavor and Fortune.
