Marek Walczak will talk about the relationship between architecture, social space, and interactivity — specifically, the interactive wall for 7 World Trade Center and other urban projects. Marek Walczak and his team recently won the competition for “Dialog,” an interactive table for the Walker Art Center which includes a shared, gesture-based interface for thematic explorations (and makes postcards).
Marek Walczak was trained as an architect and worked for several years for James Carpenter Design Assoc., creating large-scale public artworks before being enticed into the Web, where he worked with Martin Wattenberg on “Apartment,” a project that has been shown in the US and Europe and will be part of the upcoming New York Digital Salon 10th anniversary exhibition.

JUDSON MEMORIAL CHURCH announces the launch of start a new arts series tackling vital contemporary issues with WAR CULTURE Thursday, April 3, 2003
Judson Memorial Church kicks off stART, a new multi-disciplinary arts series addressing the difficult issues currently facing Americans, with WAR CULTURE, a one-night-only arts event on Thursday, April 3rd. Doors open at 7:00 PM, performances begin at 7:30 PM. Judson Church is located at 55 Washington Square South (at Thompson Street). In addition, the visual and installation art works from the show will remain on display Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 4-6, from 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM. Both the performance and the exhibition are FREE to the general public.
Deeply frustrated by the U.S. rush to war, concerned artists from all disciplines are ready and eager to respond. WAR CULTURE is the forum to do just that, but more than traditional “protest art” about war, the works of WAR CULTURE go to the roots of the problem – roots that may be social, economic, psychological or spiritual.
WAR CULTURE will feature the diverse performance talents of choreographers Jill Sigman and Renata Celichowska, cartoonist Peter Kuper, actors Tannis Kowalchuk and Leese Walker, and comedian/performance artist Zeroboy, as well as a special greeting from the first lady of downtown performance, Martha Wilson (Franklin Furnace), appearing as Barbara Bush. War-themed animation from Robert Smigel and Wachtenheim/Marianetti (SNL TV Funhouse Cartoons) will be screened and the space will come alive with the visual art of Mark Beard, George Boorujy, Rachael Cole, Nathan Fox, John Jodzio, Sabrina Jones, Holly Laws, Ben Marra, Lauren Simkin Berke, Anthony Wilson, Aaron Zimmerman and others. A live DJ will spin before and between performances, and the evening culminates in “15 Minutes of Citizenry”: an offering of concrete actions by The Love Everybody Players that every audience member can do in 15 minutes
Judson Memorial Church has a long tradition of providing a supportive outlet and venue for provocative art and outreach in times of crisis. stART’s core group of organizers represent a new generation of artist-activists inspired by this rich heritage. They are: Ward Sutton, syndicated political cartoonist (Schlock ‘n’ Roll) and animator; Karen Sherman, performance artist and Judson Church administrator; Joel Hinman, documentary writer and producer of industrial films; director and producer Ralph Lewis and producer and actress Catherine Porter, co-artistic directors of Peculiar Works Project; and Sue Unkenholz, event producer and manager of SuttonImpactStudio.
stART’s goal is to present quarterly events that focus on a single issue in thoughtful, complex ways through art, dance, music, spoken word, and multi-media theater. Issues for future events include: “Breaking News” (has it broken down?), “What’s Left?”(what is and what remains of liberalism) and “June Wedding” (The spiritual, sexual and political forces behind marriage) – all with a specific “15 Minutes of Citizenry”.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, The New York Digital Salon invited a group of new media curators from around the world to create an international survey of digital art. They were asked to select benchmark works that have changed the course of new media art and music history. The results were published in a special issue of Leonardo, the Journal of the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology. This exhibition contains a selection of those works, along with a timeline of the history of digital art, presented from both an artistic and technical viewpoint. The goal of this exhibition is to help define digital art’s place in contemporary art history. Co-presented by the New York Digital Salon and The World Financial Center Arts & Events Program.

Rhizome old-timers will know Joseph Nechvatal, but those who don’t should consider researching his work. Nechvatal was a Rhizome regional editor for many years, is based in Paris and New York, and has been making art with computers and writing about technoart since the 80s. Animations, essays,and images of paintings can be accessed on his website, and I recommend Joe Lewis’ essay (reprinted from Art in America) on Nechvatal’s show at Universal Concepts Unlimited for an overview of recent projects, and Carlo McCormick’s review from Artforum in 1988 for a broader history. —

The clouds raced across the sky, the wind howled, the shutters banged — it was a queer evening…. when Dr. Dykenstein (after years of questioning, confusion, exploration, and shameful hiding out in the laboratory) finally, triumphantly creates the perfect dyke, but tragedy strikes when her ambiguously gendered assistant goes out for an extended smoke break, the creature is left alone and something goes horribly wrong. Born in Argentina, Susana Cook is a New York based performance artist who has been writing and producing original work for over 14 years. Some of her most recent shows are Hamletango, Prince of Butches, Gross National Product, Hot Tamale, Conga Guerrilla Forest, The Fraud, Butch Fashion Show in the Femme Auto Body Shop, Rats:The Fantasy of Extermination . She performed and taught workshops at The Kitchen, Dixon Place, WOW Café, Columbia University, Oberlin College, Yale University and at The Bronx Museum of The Arts.

On April 4, 1967, exactly one year before his murder, Martin Luther King delivered “Beyond Vietnam” at Riverside Church.
