Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc. and the Program Board of New York University are pleased to announce their collaboration in a presentation of the work of Grupo 609, and round-table discussion of the social and political context in which Cuban artists are working today.
Grupo 609 is a five-woman collective from Cuba. Their public performances have received much attention in Cuba as they question the repression and misplacement of women’s rights in the Third World. They aim to dislodge the ordinary notions and entrenched social ideals of gender hierarchy and many of their performances are public interventions that draw attention to the social support roles women play but that are more than often taken for granted. Yet Grupo 609 is also known for humorous parodies which implicate and question various historical and personal feminist problematics, and issues of self-identity and exhibitionism/voyeurism. Their performances have included construction site work in communion dresses, gallery and retail store human-mannequin encampments, straight-from-the-shower street interactions in bathrobes, and a performance of puppets under a bridge outside the recent Havana Biennale.
In June 2003, Franklin Furnace’s esteemed peer review panel selected six artists/collaborations including Grupo 609 to receive a $5,000 Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art awards. Artists are required to present their work in New York; letters of invitation and funds have been couriered to Cuba and visa applications made to the Department of State. But the artists will not be present on March 23rd. Instead, Franklin Furnace will screen the videotape of Grupo 609 work prepared by Conrad Gleber and Duff Schweninger as part of a larger documentary film, and Franklin Furnace’s founding director, Martha Wilson, will moderate a round-table discussion among Holly Block, Maria Finn Dominguez, Conrad Gleber, Sandra Levinson and Diana Taylor.
The Franklin Furnace Fund for Performance Art is supported by Jerome Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts. “Grupo 609 Will Not Be Appearing This Evening” is additionally supported by the Cuban Artists Fund.
The New York University Program Board is a student run organization dedicated to bring the latest and most innovative entertainment and cultural programming to the entire university community. Members of the Program Board are responsible for every aspect of the events they program, from booking talent to contract negotiation, production management and publicity. This event is being presented by the Performing Arts Committee, who produces artistically engaging performances and events, and is especially eager to facilitate cross-cultural exchange with international artists.
Franklin Furnace’s mission is to present, preserve, interpret, proselytize and advocate on behalf of avant-garde art, especially forms that may be vulnerable due to institutional neglect, their ephemeral nature, or politically unpopular content. Franklin Furnace is dedicated to serving artists by providing both physical and virtual venues for the presentation of time-based visual art, including but not limited to artists’ books and periodicals, installation art, performance art, “live art on the Internet”; and to undertake other activities related to these purposes. Franklin Furnace is committed to serving emerging artists and their ideas; and to assuming an aggressive pedagogical stance with regard to the value of avant-garde art to cultural life.
Panelists Bios
Holly Block has been the Executive Director of Art in General since 1988. She was recently appointed as co-commissioner for the US participation of Paul Pfeiffer for the 2003 International Biennale of Cairo. Block’s book about contemporary from Cuba, Art Cuba: The New Generation, was published by Harry N. Abrams in 2001. She has recently completed the gallery section for Havana for the 2004 Time Out Guide. Skowhegan School of Painting’s Board of Governorshas justselected Block to receive aService to the Arts awardfor Spring 2004.
Maria Finn Dominguez taught a writing course for Hunter College at Casa de las Américas in Havana, Cuba in January 2003. She subsequently produced the website, The Crocodile, Letters from Cuba to publish her students’ writing projects with funding from The Center for Puerto Rican Studies and The Puffin Foundation. In fall and winter of 2003, she covered the Havana Biennale for The New York Times, and wrote about Cuban Sandhill Cranes for Audubon Magazine. She recently compiled and edited the anthology, Cuba in Mind, which is forthcoming on Vintage Books June 8th, 2004.
Conrad Gleber teaches theory and the critical issues of art and design at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. During the summer he directs the European graphic and new media design program at the FSU Study Centre in London. He exhibits digital artwork, sound and video installations and recently collaborated on an exhibition of artists’ books at the Baltic Contemporary Art Centre in Gateshead, England. He serves as the editor for two academic journals of new media, the International Digital Media & Art Association and the New Media Caucus of the College Art Association.
In 1997, he began traveling regularly to Cuba for research purposes and formed lasting friendships with artists and academics there. It was an urge to share his view about the vitality and energy of the artists working in Cuba that led to a partnership with Duff Schweninger, an artist living and working in New York. The partners traveled to Cuba
in 2002 to document the present situation in the lives of the artists they met and to record the dialogue as an exchange between artists. It relied heavily on chance encounters and serendipitous introductionsincluding the meeting of Grupo 609, who had only been working together for less than a year.
For Duff and Conrad, the documentary satisfied some inkling and tested a personal notion that an artist to artist documentary could reveal a close and complex side of the motives of artists living and working in Cuba. The humor, directness and clear explanations they give talking about their work provides an engaging point of view for anyone curious about contemporary art in Cuba.
Sandra Levinson is the President and Executive Director of the Center for Cuban Studies, and was one of the Center’s founders in 1972. She is the editor of CUBA Update, a magazine published by the Center. In September 1999, she opened the Center’s Cuban Art Space, where she serves as the director/curator.
Levinson has served as project director for many Center programs, including seminars and conferences on U.S.-Cuba relations, art and photography exhibits (including the first large Cuban photography exhibit, “Cuba: A View from Inside” in 1985), and other Cuba-related subjects.
In 1993 she completed work on an exhibit of short documentary films by and about Cuban women, which is distributed by Cinema Guild. With directors Randa Haines and Lorenzo De Stefano, she co-produced “Los Zafiros: Music from the Edge of Time,” a documentary about a 60s hit group in Cuba. (The movie won the 2003 Imagen Award for best Latin documentary film.)
Levinson is an expert on the socio-cultural aspects of the revolution, and is working on a book about divided Cuban families. For this research, she has traveled throughout the United States and Cuba to interview the scattered members of nuclear families. Thicker than Blood: The Cuban Revolution and Divided Families is under contract with Holt, Rinehart & Winston.
Two years ago she organized an Artists and Writers Committee for Normalization of Relations with Cuba. She worked on a coalition which presented a U.S. Summit Meeting on Cuba in September 2002 in Washington, D.C. Her latest project is the establishment of an Artist-in-Residence program, which would bring individual Cuban artists to New York for two-three months, but the current administration’s refusal to grant visas for such a purpose has stalled the program.
Diana Taylor is Professor of Performance Studies and Spanish at NYU. She is the author of Theatre of Crisis: Drama and Politics in Latin America (1991), Disappearing Acts: Spectacles of Gender and Nationalism in Argentina’s ‘Dirty War’, (1997), and The Archive and the Repertoire: Performing Cultural Memory in the Americas, (Duke U.P., 2003). She has edited and co-edited numerous volumes on performance, such as Stages of Conflict: A Reader of Latin American Theatre and Performance (Michigan U.P. 2004), Holy Terrors: Latin American Women Perform (Duke, 2003), Defiant Acts: Four Plays by Diana Raznovich (Bucknell U.P., 2002), Negotiating Performance (Duke, 1997). She is the founding Director of the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, funded by the Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.
Performance artist Martha Wilson is Founding Director of Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc., a museum in lower Manhattan which, since its inception in 1976, has presented and preserved temporal art: artists’ books and other multiples produced internationally after 1960; temporary installations; and performance art. Franklin Furnace now exists entirely as a virtual museum on the Web. Trained in English Literature, Ms. Wilson was teaching at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design when she became fascinated by the intersection of text and image. As an artist, she has performed in the guises of Alexander Haig, Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush, and Tipper Gore. Ms. Wilson lectures widely on the book as an art form, on performance art, and on “live art on the Internet.”

The Legend of Leigh Bowery

The world’s original party monster, Leigh Bowery was a completely unique and outrageous figure. He was a costume designer, performance artist, he ran possibly the wildest club ever in London: Taboo (from which the Boy George Bway show gets its name), and he was the muse of eminent British painter Lucian Freud. Whether he was going to discos with a toilet seat as a headpiece or giving birth to a naked woman onstage at Wigstock, Bowery defined the culture of outrage that dominated London in the 80s. The film treats you to a visual feast of Leigh’s many incredible outfits and provides a peek into the London underground of that time. eyewash, a migratory gallery based in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn produces their next exhibition at the Front Room Gallery at 147 Roebling Ave. eyewash@Front Room presents PATTERN RECOGNITION, a group show of three female artists new directions in photography. This exhibition opens on friday, March 19 from 7-9pm and runs through April 18. Hours are Friday through Sunday 1-6pm-917-699-0941 & is located a short walk from the Bedford Ave. L station. PATTERN RECOGNITION curated by Larry Walczak features artists Robin Michals, Liza Phillips & Moonching Wu. Pattern Recognition is the process of identifying a correspondence between stimulus and processed information. This is often accomplished with incomplete or ambigious interpretations of the raw data. A pattern could be a description of a surface or of the juncture between light and water. A pattern orders and synthesizes raw data. Robin Michals uses images from the Internet & creates dense colorful grids in her work to convey a physical sense of the quantity of armaments such as jet fighters. In her two featured series she also utilizes images of various decaying vegetables & fruit as a metaphor for life in the 21st century. Liza Phillips makes fictional landscapes using real imagery. She creates a site-specific installation using a 40′ print that literally wraps around parts of the gallery. Moonching Wu takes photographs of landscapes through an airplane window in her AERIAL VIEW series. Sonya Rapoport, FF Alum, on March 23 at 7:30, will lecture at the San Francisco Art Institute in their Art and Technology Series. She will first talk about her transition in the mid seventy’s from abstract expressionism to computer assisted art. The second part will be a discussion of a recent web project which builds upon another artist’s (Eduardo Kac) work, as a scientist builds on a previously published scientific paper.. And the third part describes a web piece in-progress, Kabbalah/Kabul: Sending Emanations to the Aliens, derived from her presentation at a Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, SETI, Workshop for ENCODING ALTRUISM: THE ART AND SCIENCE OF INTERSTELLAR MESSAGING.

Tish Benson is an award winning poet, screenwriter, playwright, solo performance and collaborative artist. She is a Franklin Furnace Performance Grant Recipient, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Recipient in Playwriting, and a Nuyorican Grand Slam Champion. Her most recent performances have been with theatrical hip-hop orchestra 3BeanStew and appearing on HBO Def Poetry Jam (2004). Her film, Hairstory aired on Lifetime has won the Juror’s Choice Award from the Link’s Film Festival and Best Narrative Award from Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival. She is from Texas and is currently living in Brooklyn.
