SARAH JONES BRIDGE AND TUNNEL is the story of the American Dream as seen through the personas of fourteen characters, each with a distinct voice. A charismatic male Pakistani accountant, a Chinese mother adjusting to her daughter’s alternative lifestyle, and a young Latina with a quick wit and an even faster tongue are but a few of Jones’s gallery of characters. Dahn Hiuni, FF Alumn, presents a new performance at the upcoming College Art Association Annual Conference in Seattle. Dahn Hiuni presents a new performance at the upcoming CAA Conference in Seattle, as part of a panel entitled “Diversity in the Classroom.” Thursday, February 19th at 5:30, Seattle Convention Center.
In this new mixed-media performance titled “A Perfect Model,” the otherwise anonymous historical figure who served as model for Leonardo’s famous Study of Human Proportions According to Vitruvius, suddenly comes alive. Set against projected images and period music, the model delivers a riveting, behind-the-scenes monologue, describing his work with the great master, their lively debates, and their illicit affair which led to the artist’s three-month incarceration. The jarring incongruities which emerge between this icon of canonical Western culture and his very human counterpart, poignantly attest to the discrepancies inherent in art historical doctrines and their lingering subtext. In a paper following the performance, Hiuni makes a case for broadening conventional treatments of art historical images by rigorously contextualizing them.

Peggy Diggs, FF Alumn, has a four-component public project in a new exhibition “Borne of Necessity” at the Weatherspoon Art Museum in Greensboro, NC. The exhibition, an exploration of poverty and being without, opened January 14, 2004. Curated by Ron Platt, the show also includes work by Julie Ault and Martin Beck (Outdoor Systems), Anthony Hernandez, Tom Hunter, Marjetica Potrc, Michael Rakowitz, Camilo José Vergara, Ken Lum, Samuel Mockbee/Rural Studios, and the artists’ collective Temporary Services (with Dave Whitman).

You are invited to see the premier of my new documentary film, “Homecoming – Celebrating 20 Years of Dance at P.S. 122”, which will be screened at Performance Space 122 at 5 pm on Sunday February 29, 2004. “Homecoming” chronicles the origins and evolution of Performance Space 122 in New York City and the downtown dance scene it helped to spawn. Shot in 1980 on the occasion of P.S. 122’s 20th season the film takes a close look at 10 leading, post-modern choreographers who had created some of their seminal works at P.S. 122 – Ron Brown, Ann Carlson, Yoshiko Chuma, Dancenoise, Mark Dendy, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Jennifer Monson, Charles Moulton, Sally Silvers and Doug Varone and places their work within the context of a larger community of artists who were instrumental in expanding the boundaries of contemporary dance and performance. “Homecoming” follows these choreographers as they returned to P.S. 122 for a special taping of selected dances from their repertories and captures their reflections on both their work and their relationship to the institution that nurtured them. Combining new and archival performance clips, interviews with the artists, commentary by Deborah Jowitt of the Village Voice, Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times, Joseph Melillo the Executive Producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Artistic Director Mark Russell and P.S 122 co-founders Charles Moulton, Charles Dennis & Tim Miller, the film illuminates a portrait of a fertile dance scene and a ground breaking institution that contributed mightily to its development. Performance photography by Dona Ann McAdams and original music by John Zorn are also integral elements of the film. The running time of “Homecoming” is 56 minutes.
Following the screening there will be a discussion, moderated by Ishmael Houston-Jones. I will participate joined by various artists and commentators featured in the film. Together with the audience we will engage in a dialogue about P.S. 122 and dance/performance then, now and in the future.
