4. Billy X. Curmano, FF Alumn, announces The Greyhound Tour 2004
Here’s the latest on “The Greyhound Tour”:
Although the schedule is still coming together, “The Greyhound Tour” opens at the Winona, MN Greyhound Station on Sunday, February 15 at 11:15 a.m. as Billy X. Curmano boards #5767 and travels to Madison, WI where he will transfer to #5646 for his 5:30 p.m. arrival in Milwaukee. He’ll perform at the Bremen Cafe, 901 E. Clark, 8:30 p.m. on February 18.
He’ll lug his bags and instruments back downtown on the morning of the 19th to board #5787 at 10:45 for a 12:30 p.m. arrival in Chicago and a session with a performance class, Concepts, Proposals and Actions, at the School of the Chicago Art Institute. Later, he’ll join Environmental Encroachment for Chicago Mardi Gras antics.
He leaves Chicago on gray dog #1302 for a 17 hour run to Hornell, NY arriving at 10:10 a.m. on the 23rd and on to an Alfred visit and a performance at the Terra Cotta Coffee House on the 27th. He’ll spend another night on board #0968, #4173 and #1622 to arrive in Detroit at 7:05 a.m. on Sunday, February 29. He’ll perform at 8 p.m. in the Poetry in Motion Series at The Grand Cafe, catch a night at the Y and hop the 1:15 p.m. 4444 back to Buffalo for a #4416, 9:15 p.m. arrival and performances at Buffalo State and radio WBNY 91.3 fm.
And so it goes, for 45 days with stops in New Haven, New York City, Orlando, St. Petersburg, New Orleans, Monticello, Memphis, St. Louis and a final 10:30 p.m. concert in Minneapolis on KFAI radio, March 31st. The route was selected in a random process that continues – with detours and changes prescribed by fate. Watch for updates.

Act 4: Hospitality/Concert. Repeat. (ad infinitum or until the pass expires)
Audiences members can heighten their interactive experience by becoming ride alongs or greeting Billy at arrivals and departures. Individuals may join Billy for a portion of the journey by purchasing their own tickets. PERFORMERS:
Andrea Baker’s work is forthcoming or has recently appeared in Denver Quarterly, Fence, La Petite Zine, Lit, Vert, and Volt. She is Poetry Editor at 3rd Bed and lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and son.
Benjamin Gantcher’s poems have appeared in several journals and magazines, including Archipelago, Slate and Tin House, and are forthcoming in Grand Street.
Brian Kim Stefans has published several books and chapbooks of poetry, most recently Jai-lai for Autocrats (poems, Portable Press) and Fashionable Noise: On Digital Poetics (Atelos Books), a miscellany of interviews, poems and poetics. His essay on the political blog he created and co-edited called Circulars (http://www.arras.net/circulars/) is forthcoming in a book by MIT Press later this year. He runs arras.net, devoted to new media poetry and poetics.
Writer and vocalist, Latasha N. Nevada Diggs’ literary and sound works have been published and recorded in various publications and for music projects ranging from rock to house. She is the author of two chap-books, Ichi-Ban: from the files of negríta muñeca linda and Ni-ban: Villa Misería and the producer and writer for the conceptual audio project, Televisíon. A fellow of the Cave Canem Workshop for African American Poets, she is a 2002 Harvestworks Digital Media Arts artist in residence, a 2003 Zora Neale Hurston recipient from Naropa Institute, and a 2003 New York Foundation for the Arts fellow. She is also the lead electronic vocalist for the Zappa-esque jam band, Yohimbe Brothers, fronted by Vernon Reid and DJ Logic. She lives in Harlem.
Cary Peppermint is a performance artist involved with immersive environments of convergent media. His work flows through organic and new media technologies, incorporating live performance, interactive installations, experimental music, and the internet. At the most basic level, Peppermint’s works are concerned with mediation and the reduction of space and time. Peppermint’s works comprise some of the first real-time, interactive performance art realized via the internet including “The Mashed Potato Supper” conceived in 1995 as part of Edinburgh’s Fringe Film and Video Festival OE96 and “Conductor Number One” included in “PORT: Navigating Digital Culture” at MIT List Visual Arts Center in 1996. Peppermint lives in New York where he releases work through his performative online database of convergent media at http://www.restlessculture.net

6. Lois Weaver/Peggy Shaw, FF Alumns at BAX 2004 Women’s Performance Festival
I am very excited to announce our 2004 Annual Women’s Performance Festival. Always surprising, often uplifting, join us for this annual favorite in the BAX season! The 2004 Annual Women’s Performance Festival will feature two weekends of provocative women’s performance work and a performance dance party with Paprika and their pulsating world sound. Complimenting the festival will be a month long exhibit of female photographers curated by Angela Jimenez, a performance/writing workshop with the Obie award winning co-directors of Split Britches, Lois Weaver and Peggy Shaw, and Yoga and Women’s Health Day with Jessica Swainbank. Over the last 4-5 years Peggy Shaw and Lois Weaver have been offering performance and writing workshops based on their own creative practice. Making MORE Work is a further development of principles and techniques introduced in those workshops. We will focus on creating, performing, and writing. We will generate new material or work on developing existing material by further exploring techniques and resources such as: physical and verbal impulse, interventions into known texts, gender identity, stereotypical and archetypical character, autobiography, personal fantasy, found objects, popular culture and music. This workshop is open to those who have participated in prior Split Britches workshop or who have comparable experience. Please bring any performance drafts, ideas or raw materials for work you want to make.

OVERTONES is pleased to announce a joint project with Integrated Media at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).
CO/NUN/DRUM is a series of installation/performances curated by Overtones; Director of Exhibitions, Elizabeta Betinski, and Tom Leeser, Director of the Center for Integrated Media at the California Institute of the Arts. The multi media exhibit will be composed of three group collaborations utilizing video, sound and sculpture in a performative/installation environment.
Gil Omry-Barel is a visual artist and recent graduate from California Institute of the Arts. Ori Barel is a music composer currently studying at UCLA; he has collaborated with video artists and scored for film. Both artists have presented work in Israel, Europe and the US. Their recent collaborations presented in Los Angeles include an installation of a projected still image with composed sound and a work with dancers, video and sound. Their new work explores the interstitial space between video image and sound, the stitching together (and at times unraveling) of unanticipated meanings from their interaction. In a spirit of perceptual conundrums, this work teases the viewer by questioning his or her perception of rhythms and movement within the continuum of time and space.
BIRDS(eye view); is a collaboration between the visual artists, the Kunst Brothers, and sound/video artist Kadet Kuhne. The work mixes sound, video projection and sculpture into an installation that allows the viewer to transgress the notion of narrative and mediated truth.
Carole Kim and Jesse Gilbert will present Stethoscope, a multi-channel performance/installation exploring the interface between interior and exterior spaces. The architecture of the installation will explore spaces that can and cannot be occupied, raising issues of inclusion/exclusion and inside/outside. Through video projection and sound spatialization we are interested in sensitizing the membrane between, at times only providing mediated access through live-feed audio and/or video, probing the enhancement of perception made possible through this intended limitation of access.
OVERTONES is a Los Angeles art venue that supports and promotes creative endeavors in all artistic disciplines, with emphasis on the diversity of Los Angeles communities, emerging and mid-career artists, international collaboration and social responsibility. OVERTONES is dedicated to searching outside the confines of established art institutions and presenting work that has the potential to engage a wide range of audiences.
