Torturous Dreams by Linda Carmella Sibio
You are cordially invited to a private showing of TORTUROUS DREAMS, a painting series developed by artist Linda Carmella Sibio.
Ms. Sibio is known for her highly charged emotional and psychological work, both as a visual artist and performer, and these paintings don’t let the audience down. Her work has been shown at The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and Franklin Furnace, New York City, among other venues. Most recently she has been sponsored by The California Arts Council for her work with the mentally disabled. She has also been the recipient of awards from The Rockefeller Foundation and The Lannan Foundation.
The imagery in the painting series TORTUROUS DREAMS, deals conceptually with people tortured and turned into technological junk. The figures in the paintings are discarded bits of society. Although the concept is dark, the works are studded with thousands of intricate images and are akin to Medieval illuminated manuscripts or Mayan hieroglyphs. The theme of torture is thus transformed into a multicolored jewel. The works are carried out with gouache on Arches watercolor paper.
The evening will consist of a viewing of the work and a talk by the artist discussing her work and answering any questions you may have about these paintings, shown publicly for the first time. There may be comments by other professionals.
In addition, the artist will be selling both the original works and archival quality prints, signed. This is a good chance to see high quality work and pick up a last minute gift!

Hi friends,
Our new “mockumentary”, based on Sandow Birk’s hysterical, “historical” artworks, has been accepted at SLAMDANCE!!! One of 19 films (out of 1600 submitted) on the bill in Park City at the same time as Sundance! Entitled “In Smog and Thunder: The Great War of the Californias”, it’s a 47 minute fake documentary based on paintings, drawings, and prints that depict a fictional war between San Francisco and Los Angeles. I cowrote the script with Sandow, did the narration, and helped direct/produce the thing. Larded with political and social satire as well as wicked jokes, goofy special effects, and lavish music, the 45 minute video has just been accepted to the Palm Springs “Festival of Festivals”, among others. (The recent California World Series, Angels V. Giants/Smog V. Fog, was an ironic life-imitating-art coincidence).

Seminal exhibition on Afrocuban Religions in contemporary Cuban photography to be shown at Havana’s National Museum of Photography. Thirteen contemporary Cuban artists with a total of more than 80 works will be presented at La Fototeca de Cuba, Havana’s National Museum of Photography, in el otro lado del alma: Afrocuban Religions in Contemporary Photography, opening to the public on February 11th, 2003. This is the first photography exhibition dedicated to the religious theme in Revolutionary Cuba. It was initiated and organized by the Austrian curator and documentary film maker, Moritz Neumueller, and will be presented by the Fototeca’s director Lourdes Socarras and chief curator Nelson R. de Arellano.
El otro lado del alma, translated as “the other side of the soul” will bring together, for the first time, those contemporary Cuban photographers and video artists who reflect the Afrocuban Religions in their work. These religions stem from West African cults brought to the new world by slaves imported to the Caribbean to work the sugar plantations. The Africans carried with them various cultural traditions, generally based on a tradition of communicating with the ancestors or deities, the use of animal sacrifice and the practice of sacred drumming and dance. Despite the slaveholders’ intentions to convert the slaves to Catholicism, they were able to preserve the essence of their religions by syncretizing these with elements from the surrounding Spanish Catholic culture. Until today, the Afrocuban Religions have played an important role in shaping the Cuban culture and national identity.
“While Cuban art must not be viewed apart from the international movements it interacts with, its Afrocuban heritage, especially the role of Santeria Aesthetics has been prominently discussed in theory and practised in installations, performance art, painting and sculpture. In photography and video art, however, this rich pattern of influences is somewhat harder to grasp, as a technical device has to intermediate in the dialogue between the imagery and its creator”, says the curator of the exhibition, Moritz Neumueller from Vienna, Austria. Nelson R. de Arellanos, Chief Curator of the Fototeca de Cuba, explains: “For political and historic reasons, that part of Cuban photographic production unrelated to the social reality of the Revolution did not find any interest for many years”. Firstly, documentary religious photography was not promoted by the art institutions, therefore lacking greater public echo. Secondly, the formal aperture of Cuban photography towards more “conceptual” tendencies did not happen before the 80s, only then allowing the development of new approaches to the religious theme.
There is a broad spectrum of how contemporary Cuban photographers work with the religious subject matter. At a quick glance, one might say that the one end of that spectrum is defined by photographic reportage-style works of those artists who document religious ceremonies and processions, while the other is marked by those photographers who inscribe the symbols of a genuinely Afrocuban language into still-lives and on their own bodies in order to produce polysemous sign systems, or those who choose a more conceptual approach to transculturation. However, this simplistic view ignores the individual artists’ profound interpretation of the collective spiritual memory of a nation that has been called “Latin-African” by its supreme leader. Historic references, such as Jose Agraz Solans’ famous series that soon became known as “Mesajero de Ochun” (Messenger of Oshun), and Ana Mendieta’s ouvre prove the complex interference between Cuban photography and the religious subject matter. The curator, Moritz Neumueller, concludes that “the fantastic iconography of the Afrocuban religions and their relation to the richly facetted Cuban photographic tradition invite a careful look at these young artists from Cuba in order to uncover new insights into el otro lado del alma, the other side of the soul”.
Participating artists are: Pedro Abascal, Juan Carlos Alom, Jorge Luis Alvarez Pupo, Raul Canibano, Elio Delgado, Ricardo Elias, Kattia Garcia, LyN, Humberto Mayol, Ramon Pacheco, Rene Pena, Marta Maria Perez Bravo, and Sandra Ramos, all from Cuba. The exhibition is accompanied by an original 20 min. documentary on Afrocuban spirituality produced by the curator and his team, and an interactive CD-ROM with all the shown works. A multilingual, 40 page printed catalog, including texts by Natalia Bolivar (one of Cuba’s most important anthropologists) and an essay by the Cuban art critic Eugenio Valdes Figueroa, will be published for the touring in Europe, Latin America and the US until the end of 2005. Blind Data:Javier Téllez In Blind Data at Art in General, Artist in Residence Javier Téllez investigates the physical and psychological space of mental institutions, a theme that colors much of his work. Téllez often explores mental hospitals as a microcosm of society at large-a community defined by its marginality and identified by its pathology. During his Artist Residency, however, the artist will bring the sanatorium to the 4th floor of Art in General in the form of a padded plywood cell in the center of the gallery. Inside the artist’s imaginative replica of an asylum room, visitors are invited to view video taken within the actual walls of psychiatric wards around the globe. In the space, the distinction between observer and observed, inside and outside, normal and abnormal is subverted.
