1. Paco Cao, FF Fund for Performance Art recipient 2005-06, concludes “Don’t touch the White Woman”

On January 12, 2006 Paco Cao launched his exhibition and contest Don’t touch the White Woman at Claire Oliver Gallery in Chelsea. Eighteen portraits were exhibited and a “personality contest” was conducted. The visitor was invited to be jury and contestant at the same time. He/she could vote for the portrait with the best attributes and attitude and compete in the contest by answering questions on the official form. The winner received induction into the GPS and had her portrait taken.

On February 14, 2006 the final results of the contest were released. The winner portrait was GPS VIII. The best entry was Megan Metcalf.

To watch the online portrait visit http://www.franklinfurnace.org/grants/artists_updates/cao_paco/updcao.html and click on 11/20/2006

About the project

The year is 2125. The American Empire is on the verge of collapse, its white population on the edge of extinction. Fearing continued attacks from foreign nations on its Caucasian population, particularly its women, the United States signs a treaty known as Don’t Touch the White Woman. This treaty successfully brings peace and stability between world governments, however it does little to deter attacks by rogue terrorist cells. In order to combat this unrelenting enemy, a special Antiterrorist Force is formed. An array of heretofore mythological beings – vampires, werewolves, and the like – previously forced to hide in secret societies emerges after centuries underground. These beings are enlisted and soon become the cornerstone in the global struggle to save the Caucasians. This new antiterrorist taskforce is dubbed the Global Protection Syndicate (GPS).

In the turbulent twenty-second century, the high profile nature of the GPS in ensuring security and stability creates new paradigms of beauty and style. Public devotion escalates, their images multiply and abound. Capitalizing on the newly established stardom of the GPS, some companies even succeed in marketing robotic replicas of its members. Portraits of GPS members posing in the manner favored by European masters of the renaissance and baroque periods – but in the attire of the late twentieth century – grow rapidly in popularity. As their fame escalates, “personality contests,” which allow people to imitate their GPS member of choice, become one of the most representative events of twenty-second century pop culture.

Get Ready for XXXmas at NUDE AID, an Erotic Art Making and Give-Away Event to Benefit the Center for Sex & Culture

San Francisco, November 17, 2006 — The Center for Sex & Culture, San Francisco’s “Best Emerging Sex Non-Profit” (SF Bay Guardian Best of the Bay), announces a one-of-a-kind art happening and creative soiree on Sunday, December 10th. Hosted by the legendary prostitute/porn star-turned-internationally acclaimed artist Dr. Annie Sprinkle and produced by burlesque artist Lady Monster and Center for Sex & Culture director and pleasure activist Carol Queen, Nude Aid will help CSC retire debt incurred when it had to move suddenly from its South of Market location late last summer.

Visitors to Nude Aid will pay $20–40 for admission to the event, held at 111 Minna Gallery (around the corner from SFMOMA), and will be greeted by over two dozen artists drawing, painting, sculpting, photographing, and making erotic art, live, inspired by a very diverse team of two dozen nude or fetish-clad models and muses. Admission entitles each visitor a ticket to trade for one piece of art created during the event. Multiple ticket purchase is encouraged, and each ticket can be traded for another piece of art.

All patrons can watch the artists at work and enjoy beverages from 111 Minna’s cash bar and free “whores d’ouevres.” More art is available in the silent auction, which will feature works donated by noted erotic artists and collectors. Select pieces will be auctioned live at the end of the evening.

Many notorious San Francisco personalities will model and entertain at Nude Aid, including burlesque coach Bombshell Betty, Snatchy the Clown, fetish model Madison Young a.k.a. Tina Butcher, Jukie Sunshine, Jim e Sparkle Pants, Dylan Vade, Drissana Denvananda a.k.a. Isis Starr, Lady Monster herself, and many others. Big, beautiful blues diva Candye Kane will model and we hope to convince her to make on-site, original textile art using one of her own 43GGG brassieres!

Just in time for XXXmas and all the other holidays when you might want to surprise your sweetheart or treat yourself to a unique work of art, NUDE AID will be a sexy, arty extravaganza and a uniquely San Franciscan party! Sounds provided by DJ Pantshead of the ECC and DJ PussPuss.

10. Ligorano/Reese, FF Alumns, at Printed Matter, NY, opening Dec 2, 5-7 pm

Printed Matter, Inc. is pleased to present The Pure Products of America: 1992 – 2006, the first comprehensive survey of the artist duo Ligorano/Reese’s ongoing project of political editions and artworks. Please join us on Saturday, December 2, 2006, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, to celebrate the opening of this exhibition. Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue at 22nd Street.

For the purpose of this exhibition, Ligorano/Reese will launch a new pure product entitled The Party’s Over, giftwrap that highlights the scandals of the Bush administration and their accomplices over the past four years. The Party’s Over is printed on silver and gold currency foil paper and designed using reproductions of Exhibit A evidence from the administration’s heaviest hitters, including facsimiles of Jack Abramoff’s American Express expense records and E-mails; indictments of reporter Judith Miller and Vice President chief of staff Lewis Scooter; email correspondence from Michael “Brownie” Brown; and checks from Jeffrey Skilling and Ken Lay; among others.

Initiated in 1992, the Pure Products series, which consists of over a dozen works, satirizes the marketing of politics, politicians, and religion. Each limited edition is handmade and assembled by the artists in their studio and may be incorporated into larger installations and sculptural works. Ligorano/Reese often mail their works to government officials and politicians, and the resulting ephemera from these correspondences will also be exhibited to contextualize their work within a greater political and public arena.

Nora Ligorano and Marshall Reese have collaborated together as Ligorano/Reese since the early 80s. Their work focuses on social issues through the manipulation of images and audio from print, television, the Internet, and radio.

The Party’s Over sells for $7 and will be available at Printed Matter along with other editions by Ligorano/Reese, including Contract with America UnderwearBlind Faith snow globes, and Free Speech Zone t-shirts. To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, Ligorano/Reese will be selling signed copies of The Party’s Over for $25.

We are pleased to present an exhibition of TAVARES STRACHAN’s
The Distance Between What We Have and What We Want (Arctic Ice Project), 2004-06

In March 2005 Strachan traveled to the Alaskan Arctic in search of a frozen river. Within several days he located one under the Arctic Circle. With the help of a skilled team, he cut into the frozen water to extract a 4.5 ton portion. While on exhibition, the ice sits in a glass freezer, which derives its power from a solar energy system, and so the power of the sun keeps this remnant of the Arctic intact, stable, and on view. Tavares Strachan was born in the Bahamas. He holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Yale University.

12. Candida Royalle, Annie Sprinkle, FF Alumns, at Museum of Sex, NY, November 30

The Naked Feminist
Screening/Q&A with Candida Royalle

The Naked Feminist challenges the myths surrounding women in the porn industry while exploring preconceived notions of control, pleasure and exploitation. Through candid behind-the-scenes footage, and interviews with porn stars, academics and feminists, including women who are considered by many to be The American Masters of porn: Jane Hamilton (aka Veronica Hart), Candida Royalle, Annie Sprinkle, Sharon Mitchell, Nina Hartley, Marilyn Chambers and Ginger Lynn Allen, this informative and straight-talking documentary strips away the ideological straitjacket surrounding the decades-old porn versus feminist debate by demonstrating that strong, inspirational women are found in all walks of life – including pornography.

The Naked Feminist demonstrates how women are taking control of pornography and manages to bring the discussion into the mainstream, providing a wider, more complete analysis of how this new ideology is playing out in the minds of regular Americans and culture at-large.

13. Tim Miller, FF Alumn, in Austin, TX, Nov 30-Dec 3

TIM MILLER performs in AUSTIN…NOV 30-DEC 3- VORTEX & U of TEXAS – 1001 BEDS!

Hi Folks!

I’ll be in Austin doing a performance/lecture at UT and performing my new show 1001 BEDS at The Vortex  Nov 30-Dec3 . The show is based on my brand new book of the same name. 1001 BEDS is a raucous and rowdy exploration of my queer adventures in a performer’s life fiercely lived in travels through love, politics, sex and art.  Press release below.

I will also be doing a presentation at the University of Texas Performance as Public Practice program. I will be doing a public lecture/rant/performance Friday Dec 1 at  2PM in the Winship building, room 2.112 (on the second floor). This event is called SEX/BODY/SELF and is open to the public.

TIM MILLER in 1001 BEDS
Nov 30-Dec 3 , 8PM
Where: The VORTEX, 2307 Manor Road(1/2 mile East of I-35, between Chestnut and Maple)Austin, TX 78722 On bus route #20
Reservations: 512-478-LAVA (5282)
Admission: Thursday $15,   Fri & Sun $20,  Sat $25
Limited Seating. Advanced reservations recommended.

“Tim Miller sings that song of the self which interrogates, with explosive, exploding, subversive joy and freedom, the constitution and borderlines of selfhood. . . . You think you don’t need to hear such singing? You do! You must!”
-Tony Kushner, playwright of Angels in America

From a gay teen’s head-on collision with life in a sleazy hotel across the street from the Hollywood Bowl to an ecstatic vision of a sex-positive future on a mattress in a police holding cell, the show is a  kinky and funny journey thru the beds and hotels and life on the road as a traveling salesman- oops I mean a performance artist! I was doing the math recently and I figured that if I continue to tour as a performer for another twenty years, I will end up sleeping in at least 1000 hotel beds in my lifetime on the road. For maximum poetic oomph, let’s say 1001 beds! Yikes!

The book “1001 BEDS” came out recently and  is a collection of my essays, performances, manifestos, performance touring stories from Tokyo to Chattanooga and my journals. 1001 BEDS is a fiercely funny, sexy and inspiring story based on excerpts from the book about the transforming power of art and the richness of gay identity lived out loud. Here’s a little spiel from my blog.

PANEL DISCUSSION AT MoMA
Experimental Magazines and the International Avant-Gardes, 19451975
Monday,
December 11, 6:00 p.m.
The Celeste Bartos Theater
This panel considers various aspects of the avant-garde magazine such as the nature and history of artist-run journals whose founding principles originated in early Modernism, developed through the twentieth century, and remain important to many artists and writers today. The panel looks at journals that were conceived as ongoing platforms for new works of art, for graphic experiment, and for simultaneous expression in the arts, literature, philosophy, politics, and other fields. It examines the ways in which magazines represented ideas of particular artistic and intellectual communities, even as they responded to and disseminated ideas internationally. With Benjamin Buchloh, Franklin D. and Florence Rosenblatt Professor of Modern Art, Harvard University; Edward Sullivan, Dean for the Humanities and Professor of Fine Arts, New York University; and Willoughby Sharp, independent curator, artist, and former publisher and co-founder with Liza Bear of Avalanche magazine (197076). ACCESS is a public art installation that applies web and surveillance technologies, allowing web users to track individuals in public spaces with a unique robotic spotlight and acoustic beam system, without people wearing any gear, exploring the ambiguities among surveillance, control, visibility and celebrity.

ACCESS is a co-production with ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany.

Please join us for a book launch at Orchard on Sunday December 3, 6-8 pm. At 6 pm, Sharon Hayes and Ulrike Mueller will have a conversation about performance art and politics.

OE Critical Readers in Visual Cultures #8
Work the Room. A Handbook of Performance Strategies
b-books, Berlin, 2006

With contributions by Christa Benzer, Linda Bilda, Gregg Bordowitz, Stephan Dillemuth, Discoteca Flaming Star, Marie-Thérèse Escribano, Achim Hochdörfer, Andrea Fraser, Sharon Hayes, Judith Hopf, Christof Kurzmann, Xavier Le Roi, Matthew Lyons, Sabine Marte, Mattin, Katrin Pesch, Yvonne Rainer, and Britta Scholze. Edited and with an introduction by Ulrike Müller.

WORK THE ROOM is a handbook of performance strategies in contemporary art. Investigating critical actions and the forms they take, this collection criss-crosses the field of performance work tying together threads of political investment: How can politics be performed when the public consists of those present and sharing a room? How can the space between performer and audience be activated? What if we are mobilized by our emotions more than by our political convictions?

Sharon Hayes’s work moves among multiple mediums in an ongoing investigation into the interrelation of history, politics, and speech. Her installation, video, and performance work has been shown in New York at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Andrew Kreps Gallery, Parlour Projects, the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Indepedent Study Program, Dance Theater Workshop, Dixon Place, HERE, Performance Space 122, the Joseph Papp Public Theater, the WOW Cafe, and the New Museum of Contemporary Art; and in Los Angeles at LACE, Track 16, Gallery 2102, and The Project.

Ulrike Müller is an artist currently living and working in New York. Since 2005 she has been an editor for the queer feminist art journal LTTR (www.lttr.org). Exhibitions, performances and and video screenings include MIX NYC ( New York, 2006), Diagonale, Festival of Austrian Film ( Graz, 2005), LTTR Explosion (with Marie-Thérèse Escribano, New York, 2004), and Mothers of Invention—Where is Performance Coming From (MUMOK, Vienna, 2003).
