Banana Craze
Please visit this link:
https://bananacraze.uniandes.edu.co/language/en/
Banana Craze / is the first major study of how a natural resource such as the banana has shaped the past and the present of a continent, and how this phenomena finds expression through culture. Banana Craze brings together almost 100 pieces of contemporary Latin American artists in which the banana is the main feature. Starting with Cuban photographer Raúl Corrales and his 1960 piece Caballería (The Cavalry), in which a group of men ride on horseback celebrating the revolutionary government’s expropriation of United Fruit Company plantations, Banana Craze stretches to the present day and will continue progressing into the future. An artistic, cultural and philosophical approach is used to analyze these pieces and to allow a greater understanding of how the mass cultivation of bananas contributed to the growth of social inequality in Latin America, changing traditional ways of life and transforming the landscape and environment of the region. Not to mention how the banana trade contributed to the formation of xenophobic, racist, and sexist stereotypes of local inhabitants.
Banana Craze is curated by Juanita Solano and Blanca Serrano.

John Kelly Performance 2023 End-Year Update
Please visit this link:
Dear Friends,
After the success of last year’s sold-out production of Underneath The Skin at La MaMa, we’ve gone through a period of reflection, regrouping, and planning for what’s next.
Please visit this link:

The good news is that I am now a Baryshnikov Arts Fellow at Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, at Tivoli, NY. This residency will be the first steps in creating a new work that will be developed over the next couple of years.
Please visit this link:
https://kaatsbaan.org/baryshnikov-arts-at-kaatsbaan
However, my November 2-week residency at Kaatsbaan had to be canceled, as an unexpected and debilitating sidewalk/cellar accident resulted in me fracturing my humerus (upper arm). Being right-handed, this has curtailed most of my activity. Seven weeks in, I my physical life is still on hold, but I am mending without the need for surgery or a cast, and hope to soon begin physical therapy. (The residency will be rescheduled for next spring)
This Saturday December 2nd – the 100th Birthday of Maria Callas, Mabou Mines (https://www.maboumines.org/the-history/) is celebrating with an in-process reading of a new libretto by Mallory Catlett called Barcelona, Map of Shadows (https://www.maboumines.org/production/barcelona-map-of-shadows/) (that Callas plays a mysterious role in). The cast for the reading includes: Lauren Flanigan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauren_Flanigan) , David Greenspan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Greenspan) , John Kelly, Lindsay Rico, & Ching Vladez. Music will be composed by Mikael Karlsson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikael_Karlsson _(composer)) . (Workshop 2024, Premiere 2025) This event will also include a screening of
John Kelly & Anthony Chase’s 1984 film The Dagmar Onassis Story (https://www.moma.org/collection/works/322683)
(which is in the permanent collection of MOMA)
This 7:30 event is free – for more info and RSVP email: info@maboumines.org
Looking back on 2023:
October 5th I was the Master of Ceremonies (with Autumn Knight) for the Foundation for Contemporary Arts 60th Anniversary Gala (https://www.foundationforcontemporaryarts.org/60th-anniversary-gala/) , with honorary Chairs Agnes Gund and Jasper Johns. As a former Grantee, I love this organization – FCA (https://www.foundationforcontemporaryarts.org/about/) remains the only institution of its kind: created and sustained by artists to benefit artists.
I am in a new band called Rimbaud Hattie, an experimental/investigational art song collective involving chanteuse and actress Heather Litteer, performance artist John Kelly, and Julie Hair and Doug Bressler, two members of the pivotal 80’s art rock band 3 Teens Kill 4.
Playing original songs and covers by Brian Butterick, John Kelly, 3 Teens Kill 4, Destructo, and Oscar Wilde, Rimbaud Hattie was formed out of the deep love for Brian Butterick, also known as Hattie Hathaway, whose drag persona was born at the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge. Each of the four artists in this band had creative relationships with Brian, whether it was music, poetry, theater, or performance, and they share a mission to keep the spirit of Hattie alive through an ongoing collaboration of music and performance.
We’ve already recorded 2 of our original songs for Never Records – you can see the video on this link – Never Records at BAM

So in my enforced healing time I’ve updated our website and started planning for an eventual archive project, including 40 years of performance documentation (video, audio, photography, ephemera), journals and workbooks, and performance-related artwork. That’s a history of over 60 performance works!

BANG! Mark Your Calendar!

Everything in New York Goes BANG!
A Vigorous Reading by Robert Galinsky
New York NY: Following a sold out one-night performance in Hollywood CA, Galinsky brings a vigorous reading of his newest solo show “Everything in New York Goes BANG!” to the Jefferson Market Library. 425 6th Avenue, New York, NY 10011212-243-4334 jeffersonmarket@nypl.org
In this much-anticipated-one-person show, Everything in New York Goes BANG!, Galinsky recounts his journey from childhood in the suburbs of Connecticut, through his interactions with hipsters in the Lower East Side of New York City, to his work with young people incarcerated on Rikers Island Jail. Expertly embodying multiple characters through storytelling and rock-star level poetry, he explores the harmony and turmoil of living in New York City from his arrival in the late 1980’s to his exile and banishment from the notorious Rikers Island Jail in 2022. Everything in New York Goes BANG! is executive produced by 5 Time TONY Award winning producer Terry Schnuck. The running time is 60 mins.
Please visit this link:
http://www.everythinginnewyorkgoesbang.com/
“Galinsky’s ‘BANG!’ is touching, sweet, grungy, and saturated with humor. The word play has a musicality to it that is likened to the beat poets of the 50s and at times, dips into the coolness and complexity of a Charlie Parker bebop jazz piece.” Mark Schoenfeld, Creator of “Brooklyn the Musical”

18. Suzanne Lacy, Susan Mogul, FF Alumns, at Redcat, Los Angeles, CA, Dec. 5
Primary Source/A Conversation
DEC 5 | 7pm | REDCAT
Last performance by Suzanne Lacy
December 5 | 7pm
Susan Mogul & Linda Vallejo in conversation with students of Professor Jenni Sorkin from UCSB
On December 5, I am presenting Primary Source/A Conversation, a performative action designed to interrogate feminist art pedagogy and the process of encountering, interpreting and preserving women’s contributions to art.
On each of the evenings, two different artists involved in the early days of the Los Angeles performance and feminist art movements will bring a box of archival material to the gallery where they will participate in a staged conversation, led by students from CalArts, USC, and UCSB, that explores how young researchers encounter and interpret artists’ archives and how the artists respond to these interpretations.
The conversations explore differences in how learning takes place in the presence of the artist, through writings about the artist, and through the artist’s archives.
The archives of the presenting artists are being collected now, bringing up issues like whose work is worth preserving. How is information about art practices communicated? How accurate is “received” knowledge – what we learn from the writings of others – and do archives offer different insights, materially representing what the artist prioritizes?”
Each event is informal and intimate, revealing an improvisational construction of in-situ learning environments. Underlying these sessions are questions about erasure and misinterpretations in the work of women, the working class, and people of color and the value of independently-led study versus received knowledge.
Primary Source/A Conversation is an extension of the artwork The Performing Archive, made collaboratively with Leslie Labowitz Starus and included in the exhibition The Feminist Art Program (1970-1975): Cycles of Collectivity.
