Franklin Furnace’s Weekly Spotlight is trained on Aaron Osborne’s “The Acid Whorehouse Told by D.D. Johnson,” an hour-long performance centered around the CIA’s experimental use of LSD in a whorehouse in San Francisco. Filmed at the live 1990 performance, Osborne’s narrative is presented in vignettes involving CIA scientists, working women, and unknowing test subjects. This “concert-within-a-play” is peppered with a running sermon in defense of the acts by “that infamous manipulator from the past — Rasputin”. The prostitutes are complex characters who face and grapple with the CIA agenda, their customers, and themes of truth, patriotism, sex, and abuse. (Text by Alison Siegel, FF Intern, Autumn 2020).

Presented by MASS MoCA and the Berkshire Cultural Resource Center (BCRC) at MCLA, In Session is a series of four panel discussions on anti-racist work in museums, streamed live on MASS MoCA’s YouTube and Facebook. The first two sessions will invite artists, curators, and arts administrators to discuss how museums and artists represent Black and Brown trauma in artwork, exhibitions, and performances, and navigate the resulting implications and challenges.
Tune in for the first In Session with artists Nick Cave, Shaun Leonardo, Steve Locke, and Xaviera Simmons. The panel will begin with introductory remarks by Dr. Kalima Young, and will be moderated by M. Carmen Lane.
Designed to pose more questions than answers, topics for this discussion include: What is trauma and what do we mean when speaking of Black trauma? Who holds permission to use images of violence against Black and Brown bodies? Who grants this permission? What are an art institution’s responsibilities toward audiences when hosting work regarding violence enacted against Black and Brown bodies?

WHY:
Art in Odd Places (AiOP) is an annual festival that presents visual and performance art in public spaces along 14th Street in Manhattan, NYC from Avenue C to the Hudson River each October. Active in New York City since 2005, AiOP aims to stretch the boundaries of communication in the public realm by presenting artworks in all disciplines outside the confines of traditional public space regulations. Using 14th Street as a laboratory, this project continues AiOP’s work to locate cracks in public space policies, and to inspire the popular imagination for new possibilities and engagement with civic space.

With the winter solstice comes an opportunity to actively search for equilibrium between feeling into our individual and collective eco-anxiety, environmental grief & solastalgia, and building inner resilience. Through a series of guided meditations, visualizations & creative prompts, we will explore the following themes: grounding in presence, cultivating joy, practicing self-compassion, accepting change, fostering connection and moving into action. This 3-hour retreat will support participants to maintain a sense of inner peace while fostering hope and agency to respond to the human-induced climate crisis playing itself out across the globe.

Currently living in Iqaluit (in the Eastern Arctic), Devora Neumark, PhD, is an interdisciplinary artist-researcher, educator and community-engaged practitioner with over 30 years of contemplative practice. Neumark is also a Yale School of Public Health-certified Climate Change Adaptation Practitioner. She has been a faculty member in the Goddard College MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts program since July 2003 and was a co-founder of its Indigenous and Decolonial Art Concentration in Port Townsend, WA.

Viridian Artists Inc. is pleased to present during these uncertain times, an invitational exhibit of artists exploring through their art the concept of Uncertainty, by its nature a difficult task. The exhibit will be both real & virtual and will open at the gallery premises November 18th and continue through December 5th, 2020.Ben Eastham, editor-in-chief of art-agenda and a founding editor of The White Review. writes in “The Case for Embracing Uncertainty in Art” and “On the Value of Bewilderment”. Here is some of what he has to say about embracing uncertainty in art:“Art today is less about the formal or aesthetic properties of an object than a way of talking about the intricately entangled, increasingly unstable world in which we live.”
“We should not be intimidated by uncertainty but embrace it.”
“Good art has always raised difficult questions, offended taste and challenged established categories.
Eckhart Tolle who wrote “The Power of Now” states that “If uncertainty is unacceptable to you, it turns into fear. If it is perfectly acceptable, it turns into increased aliveness, alertness, and creativity.” Tolle regards worrying about the future or regretting the past as time lost, and that instead we must live every minute as it occurs. Contemporary art, the art being made at this moment, is more concerned with dealing with ideas rather than with methods, materials or styles. For artists, the making of art often serves as a substitute for worry.For most of us living totally in the moment & not worrying is impossible. In this exhibit, the making of art has perhaps provided ways that these artists are able to deal with the fears that are currently being created in our world by all the uncertainty currently confronting us.We hope that you the viewer will also derive some comfort from looking at and thinking about this art of “UNCERTAINTY” and that perhaps it will help you to deal with the uncertainty that we are always facing, but so much more during this time of the Covid virus, the growing concerns for our planet’s environment and racial injustice, to name just a few of the maladies of our times.
