3 Programs of Film + Video Art in Honor of Holly Solomon
A Benefit for the Anthology Film Archives in the Courthouse Theatre
FROM HOLLY WITH LOVE is a gift from Holly to all of us. To the artists whose work will be shown, she was a friend and supporter, and to the audience these programs offer a representative selection of works that she helped to nurture. Each program begins with a 4 minute portrait of Holly by FF Alumn Andy Warhol. Shot in 1964, Screen Test, Reel 21 begins with Holly, dramatically lit in a black velvet space. An actress and early collector of Pop art at the time, it is a sultry performance. 98.5 a 16mm film was shot in 1972 that she co-directed and co-edited. It combines 5 individual films by artists she exhibited, and is titled after the alternative space 98 Green Street Loft. In it Susan Hall, Charles Simmonds, FF Alumn Gordon Matta-Clark, Ed Baynard and George Schneeman each invent a scenario, Holly appears in some of them. The Robert Kushner and Izhar Patkin films are of performances that took place in the gallery. FF Alumn Steven Watson’s digital video interview offers a rare and intimate portrait. The FF Alumn William Wegman film has been provided in its original 35mm format and is a spoof on the Hardy Boys adventure books, it stars Fay Ray and a cast of inspired Weimaraners. FF Alumn Nam Jun Paik exhibited with the Holly Solomon Gallery for decades and we have elected to show some early short works called as a whole, Video-Film Concert, that were co-authored by Yalkut. The 98 Greene Street Loft was an early alternative space, where diverse artistic activities began to develop; performances, poetry readings, art exhibitions and installations. Gordon Matta-Clark helped physically to build it, and was one of the founders of 112 Greene Street. Both alternative spaces helped to enable the development of new vocabularies that transformed the international art terrain. Holly closed 98 Greene Street Loft in 1973 and opened a commercial gallery at 392 West Broadway in 1975. Her gallery helped to launch the careers of FF Alumn Laurie Anderson, FF Alumn Robert Mapplethorpe, Sigmar Polke, Robert Kushner, Mary Heilmann, Gordon Matta-Clark, William Wegman and many other influential artists. These film and video artworks pay tribute to Holly and several of the important artists she developed and worked with over the last 30 years.

jihui – Digital Salon presents A Dialogue with Timothy Druckrey and Mark Stafford,
Fri., Nov. 22, 7 pm
@ Parsons Center for New Design
55 West 13th Street, 9th Fl.
New York, NY 10011
Live Webcast @ http://netart-init.org starts 7pm EST.
The Question Concerning Media Technology
The history of media theory has been primarily rooted in attempts to legitimize the potential of surfaces and effects as signifiers of the ‘radical’ possibilities of representation. This privileging of form, or, in the ‘media arts,’ the implementation of form as effect, creates vexing problems that differentiate between communication and expression. This ‘difference’ emerges time-and-again in the development of ‘theories’ of interactivity and so-called ‘net.art.’ Because of the intricate reciprocity evident in an ‘art of exchanges,’ a theory of media cannot adequately frame issues without a rethinking of representation in terms of its transformed function, its shifting relationship with visibility, its probing of the ‘immaterial,’ its reformulation of reception (and cognition), its understanding of the ‘mechanization of the world picture,’ or its conceptualization of a philosophy rather than a theory of communication. This dialogue will pose the issue in discursive form and on examples of works that rupture or disrupt the flow of effects…
Timothy Druckrey is a curator, writer, and editor living in New York City. He lectures internationally about the social impact of electronic media, the transformation of representation, and communication in interactive and networked environments. He co-organized the international symposium Ideologies of Technology at the Dia Center of the Arts and co-edited the book Culture on the Brink: Ideologies of Technology (Bay Press). He curated the exhibition Iterations: The New Image at the International Center of Photography and edited the book by the same name published by MIT Press. He edited Electronic Culture: Technology and Visual Representation and is Series Editor for Electronic Culture: History, Theory, Practice published by the MIT Press that includes Ars Electronica: Facing the Future, net_condition: art and global media, Dark Fiber (by Geert Lovink), and Future Cinema: the Cinematic Imaginary after Film (edited by Jeffrey Shaw and Peter Weibel) and The Un-archaeology of the Media (by Siegfreid Zielinski) both forthcoming.
Mark Stafford is a psychoanalyst and a member of Apres-Coup Psychoanalytic Association. His recent research work has focused on the relationship between aesthetic practice and the subjective experience of the boundaries of the human body. He is particularly interested in the relation between media production and the ideological implications of science. Mark Stafford teaches at MFA Design and Technology program at Parsons School of Design. He also lectures at the School of Visual Arts.
