If You Were Here is an innovative and scholarly exhibition bringing together the work of nine seemingly disparate artists from New York and Kentucky. These artists share a common thread in the treatment of an internal landscape in their work; an obsessive preoccupation with rendering a world constructed of enigmatic images that are amazing and, at times, unsettling. The nine artists in this exhibition are connected through an interest in fantastic, even visionary, images that construct highly personal landscapes or psychological terrain. The exhibition has been co-curated by Lexington Arts and Cultural Council President and CEO, Jim Clark, and Mary Dinaburg, an independent curator from New York.

Commissioned by The City of Kansas City, Missouri, Municipal Art Commission 160,200 square feet of epoxy matrix terrazzo floor with blue glass, clear glass, mirror, mother of pearl, and marble aggregates; brass, zinc and green plastic strip; brass, marble and stone and glass mosaic imbedded inserts. Polarities is a collection of overlapping systems as a very large, ever-shifting diagrammatic “drawing” suggesting and questioning the infinite depth of space, scale, gravity, groundlessness, suspense and flight. A deep ultramarine blue band of terrazzo is contained within a narrow black and white border alluding to mapping and measure. Wind and water currents, electrical charges, and magnetism are suggested by brass plus and minus inlays that stir this blue field and give evidence to the invisible animation of flow, the pull of gravity and the dream of release. This charged blue field is contrasted by adjacent fields of gray terrazzo with random, chaotic brass plus and minus signs . Fine brilliant green lines crisscross and segment the floor creating a volume of depth that is spatial beneath one’s feet and appear as longitudinal lines on a map or chart, or like the web of lines from the flight control radar screen. The blue field is punctuated by many images outlined in brass strip and inset images of marble, mosaic and brass.

“The Sour Thunder” blends science fiction and autobiography with hip-hop, new music, and a theatrical bi-lingual text (English and Spanish), creating a personal and surreal tale of cultural and racial identity. Musically, “The Sour Thunder” is told through a series of 23 sound-text pieces and songs. The textures that make up “The Sour Thunder” were created using digitally treated hollow body guitars, Nigerian mbiras, field recordings of environmental sounds, and electronically processed vocals.
*Armor and Flesh*
Armor and Flesh is a new book by Mendi Obadike. It is available directly from the publisher, Lotus Press, and from Amazon.com
The poems in this collection explore protective gestures (physical and emotional hardness) and vulnerability. Armor and Flesh received the Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Prize.
*SOFTSHELL*
Keith Obadike composed a companion soundscape for Armor and Flesh entitled SOFTSHELL. This composition, built from metallic abstractions and synthesized sinews, functions as a micro score to the book. It is available on a special edition transparent CD from http://Hellomachine.com.

City Lore’s Ninth People’s Hall of Fame
If you’ve followed our work over the years, you probably think you know us pretty well – but you’ve never truly known City Lore if you haven’t attended the People’s Hall of Fame. It only comes around every other year, so this is your big chance. And if you’ve had the opportunity to see us present our “tokens of esteem” (actually a large, bronze subway token) to the inimitable characters and performers who sustain the City’s grassroots cultures, and then danced and celebrated with us afterwards, we know you’ll want to join us once again.
This year’s awards ceremony will be held on:
Thursday, November 18 at 7 pm
at the Museum of the City of New York

Performance artist Annie Lanzillotto will emcee the ceremony, which will be interlaced with performances honoring the honorees, including a special guest appearance by Odetta! The Old Harlem Jazz and Blues Band will perform at the dance party afterwards, and Tina Pratt and the Swinging Seniors will hit the floor to show the young ‘ns the shim sham shimmy.
And the honorees are:
*Reverend Deacon Edgar W. Hopper, for saving the ‘Slave Gallery,’ a racially segregated area of seating behind the balcony of St. Augustine’s Church on the Lower East Side. Today the Gallery serves as a potent reminder of how entrenched racism was in the fabric of everyday life in New York, both for the present congregation, largely African American, and all New Yorkers who visit there;
*Aurelia Fernández and Margarita Larios, two vibrant grandmothers and activists, for working vigilantly for decades to preserve traditional Mexican cuisine, music, dance, craftwork, and art in New York, and for fostering the Mano a Mano Program of the Center for Traditional Music and Dance;
*Terry Marone and the Actors’ Equity’s Advisory Committee on Chorus Affairs, for keeping alive the tradition of the gypsy robe, a good luck charm for countless Broadway chorus lines for more than 40 years. Freighted with good luck mementos, the robe is passed from one chorine to the next each time a new musical opens;
*Jim Power, New York’s “Mosaic Man,” for beautifying the City with distinctive, artful mosaics for almost 20 years. The artist and Vietnam vet is now at work on what may be his pièce de résistance, a portrait of Abraham Lincoln applied to a lamppost in front of The Cooper Union;
*Tina Pratt and the Swinging Seniors, for continuing to brighten the world with their shim sham shimmy, even at ages 82 to 93. Ms. Pratt and her group of veteran pros remember the Cotton Club, Apollo Theatre, and the TOBA (“Tough on Black Actors”) circuit of road shows – and more, much more – in careers stretching back more than a half-century.

Post-Mexican performance artist/writer and All Things Considered commentator Guillermo Gómez-Peña, director of the infamous San Francisco-based troupe La Pocha Nostra (www.pochanostra.com) will be in New York City for one week. “Ethno-techno art: In search of a new aesthetic” is an audio-visual performative lecture that chronicles Gomez-Pena’s performance projects over the past five years. He uses this material as a point of departure from which to discuss the cultural side effects of globalization, the digital divide, corporate multiculturalism, xenophobia and the culture of “the mainstream bizarre” and how these developments impact the Chicano/Latino community, as well as notions of the body in performance.

Director, producer, and writer David O. Russell’s award-winning first feature, “Spanking the Monkey,” premiered at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. He continued to garner recognition with his subsequent films, “Flirting with Disaster” and “Three Kings.” In 2002, Russell was the first director honored by the Museum of Modern Art’s series “Works in Progress,” and his latest feature, “I Heart Huckabee’s,” was released to great critical acclaim this fall.
Celebrated actress and comedian Lily Tomlin has received many awards including six Emmys, two Tony awards, and the 2003 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. She made her television debut in 1966, and in 1969 garnered national attention as a cast member of the top-rated Laugh-In. In 1975, Tomlin made her film debut in Robert Altman’s “Nashville,” and went on to star in numerous feature films. She is a central character in the stellar ensemble cast of Russell’s “I Heart Huckabee’s.”

In recent years, scientists have advanced our ability to understand and control human sexuality, reproduction, and gender. These developments have been highly controversial and politicized, as witnessed in our recent election. Artist Sonya Rapoport draws from historical references such as alchemy and Jewish mysticism to construct multimedia projects that address contemporary dilemmas.
Combining ancient myths with modern technological sophistication, Sonya Rapoport will trace the evolution of her artwork through the past four decades. Starting from her abstract expressionist paintings of the 60’s to her pioneering computer assisted art works of the 70’s and 80’s. Robert Edgar summarizes her early interdisciplinary work as a “mix between Marcel Duchamp and the anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss.” Rapoport will present slides, video, and her recent interactive webworks: REDEEMING THE GENE, and KABBALAH/KABUL, that address the constitution of artificial beings.
