2. Micki Watanabe Spiller, FF Alumn, at Flushing Town Hall, Queens, Nov. 7

Dear friends,

Good evening!

We would like to let you know that Southeast Queens Artist Alliance submitted a selection of zines/artist’s publications from our collection to “The World’s Borough,” an upcoming exhibition at Flushing Town Hall in Queens. Micki Watanabe Spiller’s work was selected because it is neighborhood based and exemplifies something about Queens (immigration, communities that make Queens their home, local history, etc). We decided to participate in the exhibition to bring more attention to our zine library and the wonderful artists who have shared work with us, beyond the outdoor events we’ve been doing since launching our mobile museum and zine library in 2019.

Opening reception:

Thursday, November 7th

Member Preview: 6:00pm – 7:00pm

Public Viewing: 7:00 – 9:00pm

Location:

Flushing Town Hall Gallery

137-35 Northern Blvd

Book Party, Exhibition Viewing, and Conversation

Exposed: The Hidden History of the Pelvic Exam

by Wendy Kline

Join us for an evening with Medical Historian Wendy Kline

and Artist Nao Bustamante

Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, 6-8:30 p.m.

“Exposed is not just a history lesson: it’s a call to action, a demand for greater transparency and accountability, and a beacon of hope for more equitable healthcare. A compelling and indispensable read.” – Rana Awdish, M.D., author of “In Shock: How Nearly Dying Made Me a Better Intensive Care Doctor”

In celebration of BLOOM, our exhibition with Nao Bustamante – which proposes a bold redesign of the vaginal speculum – Track 16 Gallery is pleased to present a public conversation between noted medical historian and author Wendy Kline and Bustamante on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024.

In 2021, after reading a review of BLOOM while it was on display at ARTpace in San Antonio, Texas, Kline contacted Bustamante and flew out to see the show. This encounter led to years of dialogue between the two centering on the history of the pelvic examination. Now, Kline has written about Bustamante’s work in a chapter of her new book, Exposed: The Hidden History of the Pelvic Exam, released just last month by Polity Press.

In Exposed, Kline uncovers the procedure’s fascinating—and often disturbing—history. From gynecological research on enslaved women’s bodies to nonconsensual practice on anesthetized patients, the pelvic exam as we know it today carries the burden of its sordid past. Its story is one of pain and pleasure, life-saving discoveries and heartbreaking encounters, questionable procedures and triumphant breakthroughs. Drawing on previously unpublished archival sources, along with interviews with patients, providers, and activists, Kline traces key moments and movements in gynecological history, from the surgeons of the nineteenth century to the OB/GYNs of today.

About the Author

Wendy Kline, Ph.D., Dema G. Seelye Chair in the History of Medicine at Purdue University, is internationally recognized for her scholarship in the history of medicine, history of women’s health and the history of childbirth. She is the author of four major books focusing on sexuality and reproduction: Exposed: The Hidden History of the Pelvic Exam (Polity Press, 2024); Coming Home: How Midwives Changed Birth (Oxford University Press, 2019, Bodies of Knowledge: Sexuality, Reproduction, and Women’s Health in the Second Wave (U. of Chicago Press 2010); and Building a Better Race: Gender, Sexuality, and Eugenics from the Turn of the Century to the Baby Boom (U. of California Press, 2001). She has appeared in the Netflix documentary, Sex, Explained, as well as the PBS documentary, The Eugenics Crusade. Her research has been funded by major fellowships, including a Fulbright Distinguished Scholar fellowship, a British Academy Fellowship, and a Huntington Fellowship. Kline is also a professional violinist, currently principal second with the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra.

About the Artist

Nao Bustamante is a legendary Chicanx artist, residing in Los Angeles, California. Bustamante’s precarious work crosses multiple mediums. Bustamante has presented in galleries, museums, universities and underground sites all around the world. She has exhibited, among other locales, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, the New York Museum of Modern Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Sundance International Film Festival/New Frontier, Outfest International Film Festival, El Museo del Barrio, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, First International Performance Biennial, Deformes in Santiago, Chile and the Kiasma Museum of Helsinki. She was also an unlikely contestant on the TV network, Bravo’s “Work of Art: The Next Great Artist.” Nao Bustamante is an alum of the San Francisco Art Institute, New Genres program and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Currently she holds the position of Professor of Art at the USC Roski School of Art and Design.

9. Kathy Brew, FF Alumn, at Anthology Film Archives, Manhattan, Nov. 7

On Thursday, November 7th @ 7:30 pm, Anthology Film Archives presents Homage to Ricardo Nicolayevsky (1961-2024): Un Poeta en New York.

Known for experimental work that delved into themes of gender and sexuality, Ricardo Nicolayevsky was an influential and multifaceted queer Mexican artist who pushed past cultural and formal structures at every turn to create his own style of transgressive lyricism. His creative endeavors spanned various disciplines, including music, cinema, video, literature, and cabaret.

Born in Mexico City in 1961, Nicolayevsky moved to NYC in 1982. There, he studied musical composition and musicology while earning a BFA in Cinema Studies from New York University. During this formative period, Nicolayevsky’s most significant work began to emerge through film. He used Super 8 and 16mm cameras to document the vibrant creative community around him—comprising young New York artists, friends from Mexico, and notorious New York luminaries of the era (hello Michael Musto!).

His films featured experimental in-camera techniques, innovative editing, and original musical scores, creating multilayered portraits that explored diverse personas, desires, and cinematic influences. His work drew from sources such as Lumière (if Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory were made while on mushrooms), the Surrealists, Warhol, Kenneth Anger, and beyond. The full impact of his work, later termed “Lost Portraits”, became evident only years later, receiving significant acclaim in the 1990s and 2000s.

This program, curated with Nicolayevsky’s close friend and creative partner-in-crime, media artist Ximena Cuevas, and organized by Kathy Brew, Carlos A. Gutiérrez, and Maria-Christina Villaseñor, honors Nicolayevsky’s enduring legacy by screening a selection of “Lost Portraits” alongside later works.

Each curator selects one to three artists to present medium-to-small-scale visual, literary, filmic, or performative works, encouraging an intimate yet wide-ranging engagement with these themes.
