NAJP To Host Nov. 20-21 Conference On Issues Of Free Expression In The Arts
Disputes about free expression in the arts have always loomed as struggles between creativity and repression, transgression and outrage, candor and hypocrisy. From “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” to Andres Serrano’s “Piss Christ,” the sequence has been predictable: Scandalized citizens, religious leaders or politicians fire an opening salvo of protest or funding cuts. Then artists, invoking the muses and the First Amendment, fire back, accusing their accusers of obtuseness and mindless censorship.
While high-profile shootouts at art museums and less visible skirmishes at libraries and theaters persist, overt censorship is no longer the only, or the most dire, threat to free expression. The current terrain bears little resemblance to the “culture war” battlegrounds of a decade ago, much less to what the First Amendment’s framers could have imagined.
The NAJP will address this ever-shifting terrain in “The New Gatekeepers: A Conference on Free Expression in the Arts,” Nov. 20 and 21 at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. The conference will bring together a cross-disciplinary group of participants — artists, technologists, media executives, lawmakers, museum curators, theater producers, legal experts, government regulators, free-speech advocates, and of course journalists — to explore the shifting frontiers of free-expression in the arts and search for workable solutions for the future. Lynn Book presents M=Desire, the place where mystery and meaning interrupt each other. Speculation: Site, the mouth is where the whole bungling, veering, streaming process of life blows out voice like fire that’s swallowed in reverse. Performer/vocalist Book presents hybrid compositions for voice, body, electronics and objects shifting between music and performance with guest percussionist Christine Bard.

5. Franc Palaia, FF Alumn, new mural in the City of Poughkeepsie
Franc Palaia has just completed a large outdoor mural commissioned by the City of Poughkeepsie, New York. The mural is 130’x16′ and depicts historical storefronts of famous businesses that existed in downtown Poughkeepsie around the turn of the century. One of the seven architectural facades is the Smith Brother’s Restaurant, of Smith Brother’s Cough Drops fame, who were originally from Poughkeepsie. Olde Main Street Mural is located in the center of downtown Poughkeepsie near the intersection with Market Street the other main thoroughfare. The mural faces west and is perpendicular to Main St. Franc plans to paint up to three more murals by next October.

Hi,
Please circulate this widely to everyone you know in LA . I will be doing my first shows ever in LA Friday, November 8th and these will be the only performances of whole shows. There are two.since i am unknown in LA..I could only get The Knitting Factory’s small room.seats 60.
I will perform an incredible solo version of my latest show “New York Values” An earlier solo version was a huge hit and had a great impact in Edinburgh last year. the show is 75 minutes long and those of you who know my work well know my 75 minutes flys by like some other performers 40 minutes. I promise you and your friends will laugh, have startling realizations and get at least 8 one liners you can repeat at dinner parties.I especially want industry people to see me ..since I am ready to expand into writing for others, sitcoms ,talk show host and the million incarnations that I am capable of kicking ass as!
I also want to see and meet the general public out in LA so those of you who know my work and my rapport with the public know I welcome every kind of audience member. 10. Dahn Hiuni, FF Alumn, performs in Wilmington, Delaware, November 1st, 2002
On Friday November 1, 2002 at 7:30 PM the artist Dahn Hiuni, performs Tread at the DCCA on the Wilmington Riverfront. Each year, on the occasion of World AIDS Day, Hiuni creates a piece in order to reflect, to commemorate and to gather strength. This year’s piece, Tread, is a mixed media performance weaving slides, video and spoken word. In it, the artist explores the difficulties in reconciling the beauty of childhood memories with the perplexing realities of adulthood in a time of plague. The performance is free to the public.
Dahn Hiuni creates public art, mostly in the form of performance. Educated in Israel, England and Canada-both in the visual and performing arts-Hiuni holds summa cum laude M.F.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Penn State University. Hiuni has presented solo performances at such venerable New York venues as P.S. 122, Franklin Furnace, Exit Art, Thread Waxing Space and Artists Space. His work has also been presented at the Cleveland Performance Art Festival, the Art Gallery of Ontario and Lancaster Museum of Art, and is part of the permanent collections of the Walker Art Center and Franklin Furnace Archives. Recently, Hiuni was a featured artist in The Future of the Present, New York City’s Channel P live Internet performance broadcast series. His engagement with the public crosses over into education. He has brought innovative and award-winning teaching to such institutions as The Museum of Modern Art, the 92nd Street Y, and the National Theater School of Canada, and has presented many scholarly papers at numerous universities and professional conferences across the country. Hiuni is currently Assistant Professor of Art Education at Kutztown University. He lives in New York City.

James Scruggs was awarded a grant from Franklin Furnace to produce Disposable Men, and would like to inform you that he will be performing an excerpt from this piece on November 12, 2002 at Here as a part of a group show Performance Mix. This version will be presented without video.
James Scruggs will perform an excerpt from Disposable Men, directed by Alice Eve Cohen at Here Arts Center, Spring Street and 6th Avenue on November 12, 2002 as a part of a group show, New Dance Alliance Performance Mix 2002 Disposable Men is a solo theatre performance piece with radical audience participation. The piece explores the amazing similarities that black American men and traditional Hollywood monsters share. They are both feared, have been given negative attributes larger then life, and are regularly killed in unusual ways without remorse.
James Scruggs produced a multi channel video installation called Disposable Men, a piece about the mayor approved NYC police shootings of unarmed black men. It had a private screening in DUMBO in May of 2000. In August of 2000, with Robert Penn, a documentary film they produced, Black Pride was shown at Anthology Film Archives. In May of 2002 he performed Disposable Men, the performance piece, at BAX Theatre in Brooklyn. The performance incorporates some elements of the installation, but is a very different experience. Disposable Men the performance piece, historically correct is written and conceived by James Scruggs. In June of 2002 he performed an original work he has written called Touchscape, at Here, in downtown Manhattan, it is a solo theatre piece using spoken word with video, a raw, close-up emotional snapshot of the sensual life of several contemporary urban men. In June of 2002 based on Disposable Men he was awarded a grant from Franklin Furnace to complete a major work in New York State in 2002-2003.
Alice Eve Cohen is a writer and solo theatre artist, She has toured her works nationally and internationally to theatres, festivals, museums and schools. Her fiction is published by Simon & Schuster and Heinenman Press, and her television scripts have been broadcast on CBS and Nickelodeon. She received a B.A. from Princeton University and an M.F.A. from The New School University, where she teaches solo theatre. As an arts-in-education professional, Ms. Cohen works with the Lincoln Center Institute,and is the founding Editor-in-Chief of Play by Play, TDF’s theatre journal by and for teens

Houston, Texas (November 1, 2002) DiverseWorks celebrates a decade of in-your-face activism by New York’s Dyke Action Machine! (DAM!) with the opening of “Straight to Hell: 10 Years of Dyke Action Machine!” The exhibition will be presented in DiverseWorks’ Project Space from November 1 – December 14, 2002 and will open in conjunction with “UN Real Estates,” an exhibition of sculpture by Maria Elena Gonzalez. Artists in both exhibitions will be on hand for the opening reception on Friday, November 1 from 7-9 PM.
“Straight to Hell: 10 Years of Dyke Action Machine!” originated last spring at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. The exhibition takes the form of a mixed media retrospective featuring artwork from DAM!’s annual public art projects, including “Do You Love the Dyke in Your Life?” (1993), “Straight to Hell” (1994), “Gay Marriage: You Might As Well Be Straight” (1997), and “GYNADOME” (2002).
To coincide with the DAM! retrospective at DiverseWorks, the agitprop duo will launch a citywide public campaign. Five thousand red-white-and-blue bumper stickers link the impending Iraqi conflict to America’s car culture — how many people will be willing sport “S.U.V.=WWIII” on the back of their gas-guzzling vehicle? Lucky Houstonians will find DAM!’s 2002 intervention slipped under their windshield wiper.
Dyke Action Machine! is a two-person public art collaboration between photographer Sue Schaffner and painter Carrie Moyer. Since 1991, DAM!’s culture-jamming campaigns have dissected mainstream media tropes by inserting lesbian images and content into recognizably commercial contexts. DAM!’s widely-distributed poster campaigns riffing on outdoor advertising, movie posters, and public service announcements have been a seamless part of New York City’s visual landscape for the past decade.
Jane magazine calls DAM!’s projects “awesome activist artwork,” and Art Forum notes that DAM!’s campaigns are “effectual reminders that k.d. lang is not the only lesbian in the world.” Over the past ten years, DAM!’s projects have been featured at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum; Exit Art; Le Magasin, Centre National d’Art Contemporain de Grenoble, France; Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, Aachen, Germany; The Smithsonian; University Art Museum at UC Berkeley; and White Columns.

Separated by birthdays, Jessica and Tanya were brought together after an expert in twin psychology found them living identical lives on different continents. Although initially apprehensive, the girls soon realized their shared levels of experience and expertise in all areas of arts curation, promotion and administration. They gave in to fate and joined forces to create Art Pimp. Their mission: to bring art into commercial public spaces throughout Manhattan.

Susana Cook
Born in Argentina, Susana Cook is a New York based performance artist who has been writing and producing original work for over 14 years.. Her work takes on interwoven themes of segregation, based on class, race, nationalism and homophobia with an ensemble involving mainly women and transgender people of color. She performed and taught workshops at Columbia University, Oberlin College, Yale University, in San Juan Puerto Rico, and at The Bronx Museum of The Arts. Her most recent productions are Hamletango, prince of Butches, The Fraud, Gross National Product, Conga Guerrilla Forest, Hot Tamale, Rats…the fantasy of extermination, and Butch Fashion Show in the Femme Auto Body Shop.

The projet MOBILIVRE-BOOKMOBILE project is a community arts initiative founded by the BOOKMOBILE collective, a diverse group of emerging North American artists and community activists. The project aims to introduce communities to the world of independent publishing and production and equip individuals with new skills for self-expression. During their U.S. and Canadian cross-country tour, BOOKMOBILE project collective members facilitate zine and book-binding workshops, conduct artist talks and create educational forums for communities to learn more about independent media.
The project debuted in 2001, and traveled across Eastern Canada and North Eastern and Midwestern United States. This year’s tour plans to cover much of Western Canada and the West and Southwest of the United States as well as several stops on the Eastern seaboard.

A Technolecture. An Exposure. A Seance.
Our operation will commence 11.08.02 at 20:00, #56 Water Street, in a converted warehouse beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. There will be two of us. We will synchronize our watches. We will arrive on time. We will identify ourselves as “Conductor Number Seventeen.” We will say, “This is a Technolecture. This is an Exposure. This is a Seance. Now Everyone get down on the floor.” We will occupy the location with consumer technologies. We will apply creative solutions. We will use these technologies beyond the limits of their prescription. We will set up conditions. However, we will maintain an openness toward negotiation. Some witnesses may resist, some will inevitably be lost. It is our hope that some will recognize our call and apply memory toward others who came before us and who demonstrated in a similar faith and understanding. We have accepted failure into our design. We are not “playing to win.” The moment may not hold us. History may call us traitors. History may not call on us at all. These are the dangers of performance. These are the risks incurred by dividing time so succinctly. This is the terror of decision making.
