CODE:RED Sector Zagreb is part of the ongoing collaborative project CODE:RED, which researchs sex work as a specific manifestation of the informal economy. The project CODE:RED Sector Zagreb consists of research into global human trafficking and the status of prostitution in Croatia, an exhibition, a roundtable discussion, and the publication of the second issue of the international newspaper SEX WORKER. The project is the result of collaborative work by the architect Anja Planišèek, Tadej Pogaèar, as well as external consultants. CODE:RED Sector Zagreb examines questions as the relationship between the global market of sex work and forced migrations, economic success in the First World and the feminization of poverty in the Third World.
Project CODE:RED Sector Zagreb is premiering plans for the production of the WORKING UNIT Z 01 module, which is intended to help sex workers in carrying out their activities. The module is mobile, versatile, and easy to transport; it can also be easily hooked up to existing power sources and water and sewage systems. It is composed of a rigid inner structure made of joined sheets of aluminum and plastic, with features in Plexiglas, plastic, and fabric. The basic structure of the WORKING UNIT Z 01 module has been designed for easy combination; the units may be enlarged, joined in a group, or linked end to end. The interior of the basic module is made up of five zones: hygiene, reception, lounge, the light zone, and the work zone. It comes with functional furniture, a bathroom, video and audio equipment, and a security-communications system. The interior furnishings are available in a variety of color combinations and materials. Three locations have been chosen in Zagreb and surrounding suburbs which meet most of the functional requirements and parameters for setting up a cluster of working units.
About CODE:RED
The project CODE:RED began in the years 1999-2000. Its first public presentation took place at the Venice Biennial in 2001, when it organized – in collaboration with the Committee for the Civil Rights of Prostitutes from Pordenone, Italy – the “First World Congress of Sex Workers and the New Parasitism”, which brought together in Venice sex-worker defense organizations from Europe, Asia, America, and Australia. The program took place in the autonomous “Pavilion of Prostitutes” in the Giardini, and the first issue of the newspaper SEX WORKER was distributed. The project continued with actions in Leipzig (center B2) and Bologna (gallery NEON). In early 2002 the “Monument to the Unknown Prostitute” was unveiled – the first of its kind in the world. In collaboration with a number of the leading activists and organizations in New York, Washington, Boston, and Baltimore, a conference was held in 2002 in New York, featuring a roundtable discussion and performances. In 2003, there followed a more intensive investigation into the problems of global migrations and human trafficking. With documentation and other assistance from the Global Alliance Against Trafficking in Women (GAATW), the CODE:RED project has continued to develop in 2003 in Graz, Austria, and in London.
Anja Planišcek is an architect who teaches at the School of Architecture in Ljubljana and is also a member of the design group Apartma. She is a co-founder of Trajekt, a group concerned with phenomena relating to urban space (http://www.trajekt.org).

eyewash presents CONSUMED.
Williamsburgh, Brooklyn’s migratory gallery eyewash presents an ambitious sculptural installation–or is it performance?–at Jack Pelican Gallery located at 487 Driggs Ave. David Shapiro’s CONSUMED is nothing less than two years of one man’s garbage. A profound quantity of garbage. As self-portrait. And portrait of an age of rampant consumption. Artist David Shapiro is director (along with sister Laurie) of award-winning documentary KEEP THE RIVER ON YOUR RIGHT:A Modern Cannibal Tale. This is his fourth exhibition with eyewash. Curator Larry Walczak started eyewash in early 1998 and since being closed by the NYC Building Dept. decided to make this exhibition space a migratory gallery in the last two and one half years.
