1. Martha Wilson, FF Alumn, at New York Public Library, Main Branch, Manhattan, November 4

Martha Wilson and Anne Turyn present two ground-breaking publications documenting 1970s-1980s New York Avant-Garde performance and bookmaking.

Wed. Nov 4, 2026 6:00pm EST

Lenox & Astor Room, Room 216

The New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building

42nd Street & 5th Avenue, New York, NY 10018

Artist and Franklin Furnace founder Martha Wilson (www.MarthaWilson.com) will discuss her new book, Back to the Present: 50 Years of Free Expression with Franklin Furnace, a 50th-anniversary celebration of the legendary arts institution Franklin Furnace. This visually rich volume captures five decades of boundary-breaking art and the ongoing fight to defend creative freedom. Further, it chronicles stories by individuals from arts groups across the U.S.A. who also fought in the Culture Wars of the Reagen 80s. Anne Turyn, a New York-based fine art photographer, will share Top Stories, a prose periodical that she edited and published from 1978 to 1991. Over the course of twenty-nine issues, it served as a pivotal platform for experimental fiction and art through single-artist issues and two anthologies. Primarily featuring female artists, though in Turyn’s words a few men “crept in as collaborators,” Top Stories was recently rereleased by Primary Information.

This event is organized in collaboration with https://10x10photobooks.org/

To join | Please register for an In-Person Ticket at this link:  https://events.leapevents.com/event/martha-wilson-anne-turyn

Doors will open around 5:30 PM. For free events, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. Priority will be given to those who have registered in advance, but registration does not guarantee admission. All registered seats are released shortly before start time, and seats may become available at that time. A standby line will form 30 minutes before the program.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Martha Wilson is a pioneering feminist artist whose five-decade career spans photography and performance exploring female subjectivity through role-playing and impersonations of other people’s personae. In 1976, she founded Franklin Furnace, a New York artist-run space dedicated to exploring, promoting, and preserving artists’ books, installation and performance art, video, and online art. Her work is in museum collections including MoMA, the Met, Whitney, Centre Pompidou, and the Albertina.

Anne Turyn is a fine art photographer based in New York City. Turyn attended Antioch College (BFA), the University of Buffalo (MFA) and the CUNY Graduate Center (MA Linguistics). She was part of the Hallwalls community in Buffalo, NY, where she founded and edited Top Stories, a prose periodical and chapbook series featuring one artist per issue (1978-1991).  Her work has been exhibited at MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Kunstverein Amsterdam, among others.

2. Anh Vo, FF Alumn, receives 2026 LMCC Dance Residency

LMCC’s Dance Residency is a nomination-based program that provides artists with dedicated time, space, and resources at a critical stage between a project commission and full-scale production, while the work itself is still being developed. This year’s artists were nominated by a network of New York City presenting and producing organizations, including Danspace Project, Baryshnikov Arts Center, HERE Arts Center, New Georges, Pomegranate Arts, and Works & Process.

At LMCC’s Arts Center at Governors Island, artists have a distinct environment to experiment, rehearse, take risks, and advance their work. The residency also creates opportunities to share that process through informal works-in-progress, open rehearsals, and studio showings, inviting the public into the development of new work and creating space for learning, dialogue, and community around dance.

5. Michelle Handelman, FF Alumn, at Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, Manhattan, Oct. 28

MICHELLE HANDELMAN, Franklin Furnace Alumn, will be launching her digital archive with The Feminist Institute in an event co-sponsored by The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, The American LGBTQ+ Museum and Queer|Art. The event is free. Please register in advance or just show up!

Activating the Archive: Michelle Handelman Capsule Collection Launch

Wednesday October 28, 6:30-8:30 pm

Click here to register:  https://secure.qgiv.com/for/leslie-lohmanmuseum/event/handelmanarchive/

On the occasion of Michelle Handelman’s Capsule Collection Launch at The Feminist Institute’s Digital Archive, Handelman will be in conversation with writer and scholar Dr. Amber Musser, curator and scholar Jeanne Vaccaro, and activist and archivist Exx Nottage, moderated by LLMA chief curator Stamatina Gregory, on her historically marginalized work being introduced into feminist queer archives. This panel will discuss how feminist + queer archives, and specifically Michelle’s Collection in the TFI Digital Archive, can be activated through research, teaching, and other forms of cultural work. We’ll focus on how feminist and queer archives expand the canon by bringing into the cultural record artists whose work has been historically marginalized by collecting institutions and art history, and demonstrate how archives can serve as interventions into dominant historical narratives. Through their activation, archives become a form of information activism, creating new possibilities for scholarship, public memory, and more equitable futures.

This program is co-sponsored by The American LGBTQ+ Museum and Queer|Art.

6. Beatrice Glow, FF Alumn, at Emerson Contemporary, Boston, MA, Oct. 20

If you’re in Boston, join me on October 20 for a public talk at Emerson Contemporary, where curator Leonie Bradbury and I will be in conversation about the work currently on view in Thin Places: Thresholds of Transmission.

The story of how the work came to exist still surprises me. In 2022, while browsing a bookstore in France, I randomly picked up a graphic novel about the Batavia, a VOC ship that wrecked off the coast of Western Australia in 1629. Weeks later, I received an invitation to join a team of artists, historians, marine archaeologists and environmental humanities scholars researching the same wreck. This led to a deep dive into the ecofactual and artifactual lifecycles of material culture, visiting Perth, and three days spent “swimming” through a sea of digital artifacts to uncover the 3D contours of the Batavia. The video, 3D prints, and paintings now on view in Thin Places grew from that journey.

Textures of Time: Artist Talk

October 20 · 6:30–8:00 pm · Free and open to the public

Media Art Gallery, 25 Avery Street, Boston MA (Doors open at 6pm)

Join Emerson Contemporary for an artist talk with Beatrice Glow, in conversation with curator Leonie Bradbury. Glow will discuss Textures of Time, currently on view in Thin Places, as well as her broader practice, which begins in archives, museum collections, and field research. Working across sculpture, installation, video, performance, and scent, Glow transforms historical research into sensory and speculative experiences that invite us to reconsider whose histories are preserved, how they are remembered, and how they might be imagined differently.

Believe, a performance by Karen Finley

Friday, November 6, at 8PM

OCAD University, Room 190

FREE, this is a wheelchair accessible space

Live music by Leslie Ting Leslie Ting and food activation by Sara Baron-Goodman Sara B-G at 7:30PM

Finley’s creates a series of artworks illustrating mentors and artists  who  “believed” in Finley and gave support. These supportive individuals had encounters with Finley – professionally, as friends, as teachers, worked with, met, taught, or collaborated with Finley. There are over a hundred drawings illustrating her story that  are projected onto a screen cinematically.

On stage, Finley sits at a table handling the artwork she created that tells the narrative while a live camera  with a bird’s eye view projects Finley’s hands and artwork  onto the screen simultaneously in real time. WHile the images are projected, Finley tells the story of each “believe” encounter. The artworks act as a storyboard creating intimacy, the private made public of supportive relationships. The artwork is projected onto the screen.

Talkback with Jess Dobkin and Karen Finley to follow the performance.

8. Joyce Yu-Jean Lee, FF Alumn, autumn news

Hello:

This autumn season brings some fun exhibitions after a busy summer of travel. I invite you to see one of my shows in Washington D.C., Long Island or Brooklyn!

Out of Bounds on view at The Kreeger Museum until Dec 31, 2026

2401 Foxhall Road, NW, Washington D.C. 20007

Digital Catalog HERE

This group exhibition brings together seven Hamiltonian Artists Alumni (myself, Selin Balci, Larry W. Cook, Christie Neptune, Allison Spence, Kyle Tata, and Jing (Ellen) Xu) working across painting, photo, sculpture, video, and installation. We consider what it means to question, cross, or redraw established boundaries alongside selected contemporary works from The Kreeger Museum’s permanent collection.

Each of the selected collection artists was an iconoclast in their day: Sam Gilliam, Frank Stella, Simmie Knox, and William Christenberry. They rejected rigid geometries and traditional methods of paint application, and pushed the limits of fine art mediums and subject matter. This exhibition invites the viewer to reconsider who gets to define the rules, and who has the power to enforce them.

GEOMETRIA DEL CASO

GEOMETRY OF CHANCE

curatore / curator Gabriele Salvaterra

18 ottobre – 18 dicembre 2026/18 October – 18 December 2026

Galleria Disegno, Via Giuseppe Mazzini 34, 46100 Mantova, Italy.

Park: Parcheggio Mazzini, Via Mazzini 9.

Opening: Sunday October 18, 2026 11:00 AM.

October 18 – November 7, 2026 – Thursday, Friday, Saturday 3:00 – 7:00 PM

(from November 7 to December 18, by appointment +39.335.523.3662)

Brief introduction by the curator 11:15 AM

The works on exhibition were selected to respond specifically to the spaces of this gallery. Rather than choosing pieces that are obviously connected by a same formula, the links between these works are simple instruments such as the use of four colors red, green, yellow, blue and black and white, force of gravity, duality, clustering and scattering, cutting and replacing, the full, the void. Every single work contains its own particular emotions and thoughts. The earliest pieces are from 2008 and the latest from 2026. The objects exhibited range from three- to two-dimensional, from very small to very big and refer mostly to painting.

During the opening a foldout combinatorial catalogue specifically devoted to Lucio Pozzi’s geometry of chance will be available.

12. Davy Knittle, FF Member, new publication

Dear all,

I am writing to thank you for being in conversation with me over the past ten years as I’ve worked on a project about how the tools of planning and design shaped queer and trans cultural production in New York from 1950 to 2020.

I am writing, as well, to share the good news that this project, Urbanist Desire: Queer and Trans Survival in the City, will be out next month from University of Minnesota Press.

It is conversations with you all in classrooms, at conferences, in Zoom meetings, in university building hallways, over email, and on walks that made it possible to write this book. I was also inspired and encouraged by your own writing, thinking, teaching, and approaches to talking about your academic work. For those of you who are not academics, the opportunity to garden, organize, and live alongside you helped me think about what it means to love a city, a question that motivates all the writers and artists whose work I discuss in Urbanist Desire.

I am currently organizing book events for 2027, and I’d love to be in conversation with your students, colleagues, or neighborhood book club if this would be a good fit for your plans.

If you’d like to hear more about the book, I’ll be doing a few book events this fall:

November 18th from 12 PM to 1:15 PM in conversation with Ivan Lopez Munuera as part of the Forum on the Urban Environment organized by the Princeton-Mellon Initiative in Architecture, Urbanism & the Humanities in Princeton, New Jersey

November 19th from 6 PM – 8 PM in conversation with Erica Quinones at Huxley & Hiro in Wilmington, Delaware (Book Launch)

December 9th from 10 AM to 11 AM EST on Zoom – collaborative book event with Lieven Ameel, author of Coastal Cities of the Future in Contemporary Literature (Bloomsbury, 2026), hosted by the Association for Literary Urban Studies.

If you’re interested in buying the book, University of Minnesota Press has provided the following 30% off discount codes on pre-orders of the book (before the official publication date on November 17th):

In the US, use code MN95410 at: https://z.umn.edu/be8e

In Canada, use code MNUTPF26 at: https://utpdistribution.com/9781517918057/urbanist-desire/

In Europe/Asia/Africa/Middle East: use code MNMNGF26 at https://mngbookshop.co.uk/

Thank you all for being a part of the long process of writing this book!

Archive Fever & AI

Saturday, November 7, 2026

Parkway Theatre, Baltimore

free

The eight people gathered for this convening are approaching this question of what generative “artificial intelligence” systems mean for archives (and thus for knowledge production, for facts, and for human choices) from different angles. Some are building the infrastructure directly, rethinking institutional access and design for a digital record, and its implications. Some are working on the problem tactically, treating AI and data systems as a new locus of control, sometimes dressed up as innovation or convenience. Others are asking what gets lost, appropriated, irrevocably altered, when highly specific and contingent human output gets passed through a system whose design works on flattening and smoothing inputs and outputs. And one is working from inside the noise itself, treating signal failure and residue as the material, the differentiator, and the innately human core of the human/machine creative dyad.

Participants: Tom Lippincott (John Hopkins University), Richard Marciano (University of Maryland), Maria Antoniak (Colorado University, Boulder), George Oates (Deep Keep), Lillian-Yvonne Bertram (University of Maryland), Eryk Salvaggio (Cambridge), Mark Shepard (University at Buffalo), and Victoria Keddie (University of Pennsylvania).

Organized by Liz Flyntz and Kyle Stine, Film and Media Studies, Johns Hopkins University. Supported by the JHU Sesquicentennial Envisioning the Future Award.
