“Biofeedback: Give Me Back My Lab and My Freedom of Speech!” is an energetic round-up of musicians, entertainers and visual artists who are creating loud and clear feedback in support of Steve Kurtz and the Critical Art Ensemble (CAE). This benefit will help raise money for Kurtz’s legal fees in a case of FBI harassment and silencing dissent. To date, the CAE Defense Fund has raised an impressive $30,000, but projected costs are estimated at $150,000. There is still hope that the court will realize the absurdity of the case and dismiss Kurtz of charges in December; if this does happen, the fund will be used to help others who may find themselves in a similar unfortunate position of political scrutiny.

Toronto’s only international performance art festival opens on October 20 for 12 jam-packed days of progressive and provocative new performance works, interactive experiences, exhibitions, artist talks, panel discussions, our d2d (direct to documentation) video program, a publication launch and other surprise events. For our fifth full-scale festival — still grassroots but more ambitious than ever — we offer up a stellar list of live performances by established and emerging contemporary artists from the UK, Spain, Finland, Indonesia, the Philippines, Chile, Cuba, the USA and across Canada.
Produced by a not-for-profit collective of artists since 1997, 7a*11d’s purpose is to offer a professional showcase for performance works that fall outside the traditional boundaries of established genres (theatre, dance, music etc.). We are dedicated to representing a wide range of work, and are committed to presenting both the breadth and depth of performance art as a genre.
Improvisors, peace-makers, trouble-takers, noise-makers, infiltrators, disseminators, cogitators … and mess-makers … will all be in evidence at this year’s festival, from the thoughtful activism of Cheryl l”Hirondelle, Reverend Billy and Mideo M. Cruz to the wry humour of Joanne Bristol, John Marriott or Esther Ferrer. Joseph Nechvatal is an artist who explores what he calls viractual painting: a complex numeric process which consists of a mixture of drawing, digital-photography, painting, written language, and externalized computer code – all of which is mixed and submitted to computational manipulations (including viral attacks) and then painted with acrylic paint on canvas using a robot.
Of crucial interest to ” Aventures Virales ” (Viral Adventures) is the virtual hermaphroditic concept subjected to viral attacks. The hermaphroditic visual leitmotif seen throughout ” Aventures Virales ” is created through the computational morphing of images of testicles, ovaries, female breasts, and the buttocks of both sexes. It aims to depict an imagined realm of political-spiritual chaosmos where new forms of sexual order arise such that any form of order is only temporary and provisional. The point of which is that within ” Aventures Virales ” all sexual signs are subject to boundless semiosis and attack – which is to say that they are translatable into other signs. Here, of course, it is possible to find resonances and affinities between sexual opposites through an anti-fundamentalist maneuver. Within the realm of ” Aventures Virales ” no one fathoms whether they are female or male. All rest between male and female, between straight and gay, between dominant and submissive – nothing but curves and clefts. All is in a matrix of possibilities, self-assembled out of a flowery excess of erogenous organs. It is through this molding amalgamation that ” Aventures Virales ” suggests a quasi-mythical deep continuance not unlike that found within the Tantric philosophical aspects of the Ardhanarisvara form of Siva: the form which articulates the eternal blending of male and female.
With ” Aventures Virales ” artificial life viruses are modeled to be autonomous agents living in/off the hermaphroditic image. These real time attacks simulate a population of active viruses functioning as an analogy of a viral biological system. The host for the viruses are the digital files on which the computer-robotic assisted paintings in ” Aventures Virales ” are based. Among the different techniques used here are models that result from embodied artificial intelligence and the paradigm of genetic programming.
” Aventures Virales ” utilizes a viral C++ software, developed with the programmer Stéphane Sikora of music2eye, which launches unpredictable progressive real-time virus operations that live off and transform its image hosts – hosts created by the artist using a blend of digital-photography, computer graphic maneuvers and externalized computer code.

FIDELITY follows the story of Omar, an immigrant from an unnamed foreign country who is well adjusted to American life and married to Leanne, a local girl. In a Kafkaesque nightmare, Omar is arrested and detained, but not told why. His life invalidated by government officials, he is placed in a small prison cell where the light is never turned off. He hides under a blanket, completely covered from head to toe, disappearing in order to retain his existence. This reading is made possible in part by the Manhattan Community Arts Fund/New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. No reservations necessary.

“Homecoming (Celebrating 20 Years of Dance at P.S. 122 – 1980-2000)” (2004), a new documentary film by Charles Dennis will be screened at P.S. 122, 150 First Avenue, Sundays October 24, 31, November 7 & 14 at 2 pm. Tickets are $10, $5 for students. For more information call 212-477-5288. “Homecoming” chronicles the origins and evolution of Performance Space 122 in New York City, one of this country’s most active presenters of new dance and performance art and profiles ten leading choreographers, Ron Brown, Ann Carlson, Yoshiko Chuma, Dancenoise, Mark Dendy, Ishmael Houston-Jones, Jennifer Monson, Charles Moulton, Sally Silvers and Doug Varone, whose careers were launched at P.S. 122. The film was shot in 2000 on the occasion of P.S. 122’s 20th season. To honor that achievement Charles Dennis, one of the co-founders of the space, invited the ten choreographers to return for a special taping of selected dances from their repertories. Combining new and archival performance clips, interviews with the artists, commentary by Deborah Jowitt of the Village Voice, Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times, Joseph Melillo the Executive Producer of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, former P.S 122 Artistic Director Mark Russell and P.S. 122 co-founders Charles Moulton, Tim Miller and Charles Dennis the film illuminates a portrait of a fertile dance scene that was instrumental in expanding the boundaries of contemporary dance and performance. Performance photography by Dona Ann McAdams and original music by John Zorn are also featured in the film. This project was made possible with funds received from the National Initiative to Preserve America’s Dance (NIPAD), a grant program under the umbrella, SAVE AS DANCE underwritten by the Pew Charitable Trust and administered at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, by the Presentation Funds Program of the Experimental Television Center, Ltd. which is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, a public agency and with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs Cultural Challenge Program. Flux Factory has collected artists’ books and other less formal interpretations to be displayed in What the Book?, an installation that takes to task the mass production and the mundanity of the everyday coffee table book. The exhibition space will be transformed into an interactive domestic lounge. The personal hand craftsmanship of the book and the many less conventional mediums/forms that it can take will be explored. The ambition of this show is to examine the idea of the book as sculptural object, narrative, and metaphor.

On the 20th of March 2003, in a ‘dark’ theatre in London’s West End, Bock & Vincenzi presented
invisible dances… from afar:
a show that will never be shown
It was made with Frank Bock, James Brown, Rose English, Joanne Fong, Valentina Formenti, Tim Gebbels, Doran George, Lisa Haskel, Ian Hill, William J Hulley, Nanette Kincaid, Henrik Thorup Knudsen, Gill Lyons, Navraj Sidhu, Luke Stoneham, Chris Tandy, Koen Van Geene, Simon Vincenzi & Chahine Yavroyan.
From the empty auditorium this performance was watched by one person, the poet and theatre maker Fiona Templeton. She recorded her experience of this extraordinary 2-hour long performance as it happened for an audience who would later hear it on the telephone.
The nine performers knew that if they stopped performing their audience would have nothing to describe and that if she stopped talking that the show would disappear.
The resulting vivid and poetic account can now be heard on the telephone between October 5 – November 27 2004 at any time.

Host Golda Solomon, “The Medicine Woman of Jazz,” welcomes saxophonist/flutist Carol Sudhalter and poet Veronica Golos to the program. The evening will also feature poet Alana Free and three members of Ms. Golos’ writing workshop, Kim Irwin, Ritu Kalra, and Lisa Ramirez, as well as the Po’Jazz Quartet, consisting of Eliot Cardinaux on piano, Adam Chilenski on bass, Bram Kincheloe on drums, and Daniel Levine on trumpet.
Kim Irwin is a visual and performance artist who writes poetry. She is currently working on a manuscript of poems about the inhumanity of white privilege and what this monstrous lie looks like, sounds like, and feels like. Her WE ARE SECRETARIES project recruited over 100 working women to type their autobiographies at public performances in six U.S. cities. Described as “a pro-woman pep rally,” the WANTED: X-CHEERLEADERS project, with choreographer Jody Oberfelder and a squad ages 25 to 56, has performed cheers about women’s issues from NYC to Chicago to Atlanta and got 2,000 working women to their feet cheering for equal pay. Kim has performed at Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors and at the New Museum.

Norm Magnusson’s :30 public art project is on the air! Conceived a year ago as a way to circumvent the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform act, Magnusson has brought public art into the ultimate venue: television. He has created two new pieces: “Practice what you preach,” and “Do unto others,” both :30 videos, that began airing yesterday and will continue to be shown up until election day. PEOPLES’ PORTRAIT
A Globally Networked Public Art Project
Artist Zhang Ga invites the world to actively investigate the aesthetics of portraiture in the context of speed and scale
(New York, NY) On October 27th, 2004, media artist Zhang Ga will debut the public art project Peoples’ Portrait simultaneously in cities around the world during SENI Singapore 2004 in collaboration with Multimedia Art Asia Pacific and the Dutch Electronic Art Festival 2004. SENI and DEAF04 commissioned this new work.
Five photo-capturing kiosks, including the only United States location in the Times Square Alliance Information Center at 1560 7th Avenue, will be set up globally to capture a diverse range of people in their unique environments. Every few seconds, a central server at the Parson School of Design will retrieve the portraits and display them first in time stamped order, then randomly from the archive.
People can view the display in Times Square, on the world’s largest digital display system at the Reuters North American Headquarters; in the Central Business District of Singapore during SENI Festival and MAAP in Singapore; in Rotterdam’s City Library and in the central festival location at DEAF04; as a large projection on the facade of the Museum of the Future of Ars Electronica Center, Linz (Austria); in the QUT Creative Industries Precinct, Brisbane, Australia. The Whitney Museum of American Art’s portal to the internet art, artport, and the Media Center for Art and Design in Barcelona will serve as web portals. Besides Times Square, portraits will be drawn from kiosks in Rotterdam, Brisbane, Linz, and Singapore.
As the artist’s continued search for a visual language and cultural metaphor in the age of internet and globalization, this project actively investigates the aesthetics of portraiture in the context of speed and scale. How would a public, fluctuating environment dramatically alter our notion of portraiture as the depiction of a fixed moment in a private arena? How would the “drawing out of a personality” magnified at such a scale affect the very nature of portraiture? How would a work of art in the age of internet regain an aura that once faded owing to mechanical “re-produceablity”? And how would data bytes and transmission speeds behave as substitutions for brush and paint to realize a pictorial space?
People’s Portrait harnesses the internet as a dynamic vehicle for creating global portraits of people rendered in real time and displayed instantly around the world. By presenting these portraits on colossal video walls, in public spaces, and on significant museum web sites, the project not only viscerally empowers ordinary people from all walks of life, but also symbolically connects men and women of different races and cultures, In bringing about a self-endorsed, powerful and uplifting impact realized through technologically produced artifacts in relation to the dynamics of virtuality and reality, speed and time, local and trans-local, the artist also questions the notion of interaction and authorship and expresses a humanist concern
Zhang Ga is a media artist, curator and co-director of agent.netart. Zhang Ga studied art in China at an early age, continued his art education at the Berlin Academy of Arts in Germany (HDK) with DAAD fellowship and holds an MFA from Parsons School of Design in the US. He has exhibited in Europe and America in ephemeral domains as well as in tangible spaces, curated exhibitions, organized conferences and digital salons, written on new media art practice and criticism, and served on jury duties for media art grants. Zhang Ga lives and works in New York City where he teaches at the MFA Design and Technology Program @ Parsons School of Design; he also is a visiting lecturer @ Computer Graphics and Interactive Media @ Pratt Institute. He was nominated for the Rockefeller New Media Arts Fellowship and a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts for Net Art Curatorial Initiative. He is the co-artistic director of the First Beijing International New Media Arts Exhibition and Symposium. Most recently, he co-curated the new media exhibition titled “Passage of Mirage” which opened at the Chelsea Art Museum in September 2004 in New York City.
The Times Square Alliance, founded in 1992, works to improve and promote Times Square so that it retains the creativity, energy and edge that have made it an icon for entertainment, culture and international urban life for a century. In addition to providing safety and sanitation services, the Alliance co-coordinates numerous major events in Times Square like New Year’s Eve, manages an Information Center and advocates on behalf of its constituents with respect to a host of public policy, planning and quality-of-life issues. The Alliance celebrates the Centennial of Times Square with a special historical exhibit, Crossroads of Desire, opening at the AXA Gallery on December 9th.

Synaesthesia – A NeuroAesthetics Exhibition
Synaesthesia is a term used by neuroscientists to describe a specific condition that occurs when an individual who receives a stimulus in one sense modality (e.g. sight), receives a stimulus in another (e.g. audition). For example, a synesthete might be able to “hear” colors or “see” sounds. “Synaesthesia” comes from the Greek “to feel together”. This exhibition aims at exploring the brain through different artistic initiatives. It borrows the concept of synaesthesia from the neuroscientific world to look at works that allow for crossing-over of the senses, but also traces the concept back to its meaning as a joint experience through works that engage the audience’s perceptual system as a shared function. The goal is for artists to engage with the nervous system as a communication device in diverse creative means that all affect the audience -individually and collectively- in unique ways.

Concentrating on photography and video art, Neidich’s work consistently explores relationships between perception and reality. He is one of the creators and editors of artbrain.org, an online structure open to scientists, artists, art historians, architects, writers and philosophers working with issues relating to neuroscientific interests.

voice and language are inextricably linked; letters, words rise and form in myriad ways. cultivate an open exchange between language and the feeling sound of your voiced body this lab is an exploration of the give and go of writing on air with a voice made of flesh. which basically means we will be finding ways to coax words out of our bodies through the activated voice and to find voice itself trolling for seeds of words in sounds. inventing new words, new methods of writing that doesn’t involve paper or a computer is part of our research. each session will include sensory orientation and exploration as well as techniques and approaches to take back home or to the studio or workplace.

Lynn Book is an interdisciplinary performance and vocal artist/composer whose original performance theatre works and vocal text concerts have been presented in New York at The Kitchen, Bowery Poetry Club and HERE, in Chicago at the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Goodman Theater, among other venues in the US, as well as in Europe. Recipient of NEA, Illinois Arts CouncilFellowships, NYFA sponsorships and a Franklin Furnace Award, Lynn also innovates through her teaching at Sarah Lawrence College and the Kitchen Summer Institute.
