The Queer|Art Annual Party honors the graduating Fellows of Queer|Art|Mentorship and occasions the ceremony for the Queer|Art|Prize, a national award program presenting two $10,000 awards to LGBTQ+ artists: one for Sustained Achievement and the other for Recent Work.
We are so thrilled to be joined again this year by none other than the 2019 Queer|Art|Prize Winner in Sustained Achievement and 1992 Presidential Nominee, Ms. Joan Jett Blakk (aka Terrence Alan Smith), who will be dusting off her heels for her first public appearance in over a decade for a special performance!

The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation is pleased to present To Cast Too Bold A Shadow, a thematic exhibition that examines culturally entrenched forms of misogyny as a means to understand the dynamics between sexism, gender, and feminism. This exhibition, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage, features artists who have positioned their practices as acts of resistance in the face of oppressive societal conditions. Artists include Anetta Mona Chisa & Lucia Tkáčová, Furen Dai, Tracy Emin, Hackney Flashers, Rajkamal Kahlon, Joiri Minaya, Yoko Ono, Maria D. Rapicavoli, Aliza Shvarts, Betty Tompkins, and Mierle Laderman Ukeles, whose work collectively challenges the constraints women have endured across economic, cultural, and political lines.
The fourth installment of Revolutionary Cycles, an ongoing series of shows exploring art’s social and political potential in uncertain times, the title To Cast Too Bold A Shadow is borrowed from a line in the late feminist thinker and poet Adrienne Rich’s poem Snapshots of a Daughter-In-Law (1963). The exhibition posits that ‘casting too bold a shadow’ is not only a right, but a necessity, and that building on this potential for cultural transformation – namely, equality for women – will help form a more just society.
To Cast Too Bold A Shadow advocates for equity in spite of the dominant culture of misogyny. While discreet and insidious forms of gender-based discrimination remain, and proliferate, the reevaluation of social and political systems and constant activism are necessary, even after 100 years of women’s suffrage. The exhibition makes visible the experience of women transcending history, geography, and economic constraints, and also serves to amplify issues – access to childcare, immigration, and fair pay – that intersect with women’s rights. In a democratic society, having such human rights reciprocally implies a responsibility to make these essential freedoms count for others, so that patriarchal systems can be dismantled.

Art Matters is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2020 grants. The Foundation awarded 37 fellowships of 5,000 USD each to individual artists and collective teams working in contemporary art and performance.
In this year of pandemics and protests, Art Matters engaged an internal process that eschewed application labor for artists and supported both past grantees as well as new artists whose ongoing work continues to inspire and resonates with our mission. We celebrate these artists’ expression of values as Queer/Trans/Black/Indigenous/People of Color (QTBIPOC), incarcerated populations, undocumented folks, immunocompromised and/or disabled people, healers, activists, and ancestors. We want to amplify their voices and visions for radical possibilities.
“Our grantees make art that is fully embodied; art that is not risk-averse; and art that subverts structures and questions the institution,” said Art Matters Director Abbey Williams in announcing the grants. “So it was striking to engage with artists from our past and future histories. Join artist Patty Chang in a special conversation with Astrida Neimanis, author of Bodies of Water: Posthuman Feminist Phenomenology, marking the opening of Patty Chang’s exhibition Milk Debt at 18th Street Arts Center. Neimanis and Chang will discuss confluences in their respective practices in the shadow of both a global pandemic and climate catastrophe. Their conversation charts a route through messy questions of toxic embodiment, mothers and their labors, environmental justice, and the banality of planetary collapse. What, they wonder, might the shifting scale of our fears teach us about what matters?

13. Agnes Denes, FF Alumn, publishes new e-book and more
We are extremely pleased to announce the second printing of The Human Argument: The Writings of Agnes Denes. First published in 2008, by Spring Publications, with an introduction by the scholar and curator Klaus Ottmann, the book is once again available in second edition and now, for the first time, as an e-book.
Including essays, textual works, and concrete poetry from 1967 to 2007, Denes’s writings are an integral component of her pioneering body of art works that explore philosophy, linguistics, psychology, religion, mathematics, ecology, and many other areas of human endeavor.
In her insightful review in the February/March 2009 issue of Bookforum, MoMA curator Michelle Kuo wrote that Denes’s “quiet and intimate notes, her patient and logical deductions, found shape in the quivering and breathing beings of the real world.”

My mother had Spanish influenza as a baby. Later in life she developed Parkinson’s disease and died young. I have interspersed her early photographs with my later ones, animated by a recent boat trip on the Oslo Fjord – a communication over time in the midst of another pandemic.
Since lockdown I have worked at one remove – finding and filming narratives at a distance: through the window of a bus; from my 4th floor walkway looking down. For this video the “distance” was time – printing my mother’s early negatives, seeing her world before I was born, and finding evidence of our shared love of water.

The work of Kiki Smith (born 1954, lives and works in New York) is the featured subject of a major temporary show this fall at the MCBA Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts of Lausanne. Boasting a selection of nearly 100 works, some of which are on display for the very first time in Europe, this survey covers almost four decades of art-making, focusing on a theme that is central to her output yet has been little explored until now, i.e., sensory perception.
The show Kiki Smith. Hearing You with My Eyes is a rare opportunity for the general public to get to know the major themes that run through the American artist’s output, themes that spring from her observation of the human body. Since the early 1980s, Smith has been interested in the body and its workings, its symbolic and political meanings, and its representations and status in social space. She initially sought to describe it fragment by fragment. With books on anatomy serving as her guide and inspiration, she began by copying the organs and systems of the human body, turning an objective eye on a structure that was familiar and foreign to her at the same time. Smith then began to deal with the body starting at its envelope, the skin, a shift in focus that led her to human figures. She introduced a repertory of female figures for the most part, drawn from Biblical and mythological stories as well as folk and fairytales. This added a more narrative dimension to her work. These characters, to whom she has lent her own features at times, have enabled her to go back over a common cultural store of knowledge that is the basis of our imagination. With a contemporary, committed viewpoint, Kiki Smith questions the notions of nature and culture, driven by the will to assert the power of the feminine, the simultaneous vulnerability and force of humans, and our symbiosis with the animal kingdom.
The importance granted our senses can be seen in the shift from the microscopic to the macroscopic. It is in light of that shift that MCBA is showcasing today a body of work that plays out in a great variety of techniques. Smith reminds us that the senses are a means of acquiring knowledge. She points up their interconnectivity in the phenomena of perception—as the title of the show suggests—and explores a whole range of sensations, engaging those of visitors, who will find themselves fully involved in turn in confronting the works on display. Finally, even in the materials she has employed—all very tactile, especially paper—she has sought an equivalence with the characteristics of the human body.
Smith places human beings at the heart of the living once again, in connection with other animal species, but also with the plant kingdom and the cosmos. Doing so, she has delivered a vibrant plea for both respecting nature and the harmonious and joyous experience of nature that is available to all of us. Likewise she invites us to be mindful of its presence in the world and the fact that it is part of a vast whole. Her work echoes then, especially in the current moment, the growing awareness of the fragility of natural resources.

It’s never too late to say thank you. In September, with the Queens Museum and MTA Arts & Design, we launched Mierle Laderman Ukeles’ newest artwork For ⟶ forever…, both a response to the pandemic and a continuation of Ukeles’ long-standing dedication to honoring the unending labor of New York City’s public service workers through her artistic practice. Viewable throughout a network of locations designed to reach New York City’s public service workers — from transit and sanitation workers in Times Square to essential workers continuing their daily commute — For ⟶ forever… aims to commemorate their ongoing efforts and undertakings, specifically during the last several months. The work can be found on the large-scale digital billboard at 20 Times Square, the façade of the Queens Museum facing Grand Central Parkway, and over 2000 digital displays throughout the MTA subway and rail system.
Since 1977, Ukeles has been the official, unsalaried artist-in-residence at the New York City Department of Sanitation and has created pieces that encompass the infinite maintenance work that keeps New York City functioning. One of her most notable projects is “Touch Sanitation” (1979–1980), in which she shook hands with all 8,500 employees of the New York City Department of Sanitation along their routes and places of work, saying to each worker, face to face: “Thank you for keeping NYC alive!” “Now,” says Ukeles, “four decades later, in the midst of this horrific pandemic, this statement becomes newly relevant to the city’s infrastructure service workers, who are physically out there working every day to make sure our city remains a living entity.”

We want to hear you voice your wishes, concerns and dreams for a continued democracy this election cycle.
Please join us for a socially-distanced public engagement on the plaza of Central Library on October 17th, and for virtual performances from October 18-21st where you are invited to dictate messages to the next US President. Typists will use old-fashioned typewriters to transcribe your words onto postcards which will be sent to the White House after the 2020 Presidential election.
Each time slot to meet with a typist lasts 5-10 minutes and will be done on a first-come-first-served basis from 1-3 and 4-6pm. All are welcome.
I Wish to Say is an ongoing project by artist, journalist, and educator Sheryl Oring, staged by BPL Presents as part of Our Lives Our Democracy, a season of civic engagements.

About Sheryl Oring
Artist Sheryl Oring has typed thousands of postcards to the President from locations across the U.S. since launching her I Wish to Say project in 2004. Her book, “Activating Democracy: The I Wish to Say Project,” was published by University of Chicago Press. She collaborated with composer Lisa Bielawa on Mauer Broadcast, which was presented at various locations in Berlin in November 2019 for the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Other recent projects include large-scale public art commissions at airports in Tampa and San Diego. Oring is the recipient of grants from Franklin Furnace Fund, Creative Capital Foundation, the American Council on Germany, the New York Foundation for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council. She is Professor and Chair of the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History at Wayne State University in Detroit.

I’m very pleased to announce that my image Nightshift is currently showing as part of the exhibition #ICPConcerned: Global Images for Global Crisis at the International Center of Photography in New York City which opened on October 01, 2020.
#ICPConcerned: Global Images for Global Crisis presents a selection of photographs collected from the ICP Concerned hashtag on Instagram initiated by the International Center of Photography in March 2020. The images chosen by ICP staff across departments present a wide range of responses to recent events worldwide from the COVID-19 pandemic to Black Lives Matter protests and beyond.
The exhibition at @ICP in New York City will continue to grow alongside the Instagram archive in the coming months eventually encompassing 1000 images.

Jonathan Berger, An Introduction to Nameless Love takes the form of a large-scale sculptural installation that includes over 533,000 tin, nickel, and charcoal parts, Berger’s exhibition chronicles a series of remarkable relationships, creating a platform for complex stories about love to be told. The exhibition draws from Berger’s expansive practice, which comprises a spectrum of activity — brought together here for the first time — including experimental approaches to non-fiction, sculpture and installation, oral history and biography-based narratives, and exhibition-making practices.
Co-organized by Participant Inc and Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University.

Roberts Projects is delighted to announce Thanks: Collage Works from the 1970’s, an exhibition of works on paper by Rachel Rosenthal (1926-2015). Organized in collaboration with the Rachel Rosenthal Estate, the exhibition features never before exhibited collage works from the 1970’s documenting Rosenthal’s autobiographical reflection of a pivotal time in her early artistic development. The show takes its title after the artist’s second performance at Mount Saint Mary’s University, Los Angeles (1975), in which she thanked those who had actively done something important for her, with the audience participating in the familiar roles of “father,” “mother” and “friend.” The performance marked the year of her mother’s death, twenty years after her father’s. At the end of performance, each of the participants received a small box containing a unique miniature collage work from the artist.

FRANC PALAIA, FF Alum: The Woodbury House in London, will present “NIGHTLIFE”, a solo show of large-scale color photographs of Richard Hambleton’s Shadow wall paintings by “Shadowman” photographer, FRANC PALAIA. Also on view are rarely seen paintings on rice paper by Richard Hambleton. The exhibition will be at the Saatchi Museum, part of the Start International Art Fair in London, UK. October 21 -24, 2020.
In 1980, artist and street photographer, FRANC PALAIA met Canadian artist Richard Hambleton who just moved to NYC and shared a secret with Franc. He was planning a renegade street art series in 1981. He was going to paint life-sized black shadow figures all over Soho, Tribeca and the newly minted hot art gallery district, the East Village. Franc, on a lucky tip, was the first person to photo-document the shadow images and eventually accumulated over 100 shadows and was the first to compile them into book form. A short time passed, and Hambleton became the newest international art star whose career skyrocketed and Franc has accompanied Hambleton through almost four decades of exhibitions, art fairs, books, interviews, a documentary film and now a line of clothes and merchandise sporting Franc’s shadow imagery. The production fashion team , “Capsule Collection” has produced a series of items with Franc’s shadow imagery and they include jackets, hoodies, T shirts and skateboards.
