“p(ART)ies” is a one night only art event created and produced by esteemed dancer/choreographer Natasa Trifan and art philosopher Lionel Yoong. This event, presented in the unconventional space of a gymnasium, showcases the talents of international and local emerging artists creating a forum where all arts overlap and
appreciation can emerge.
This season “p(ART)ies” exhibition focuses on the theme of surface and includes the following:

Steed Taylor at a group show at the Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos Community College/CUNY in the Bronx. The show is titled “Down Low” and is an exploration into masculinity and secret sexuality within minority cultures, a topic getting alot of press right now: the cover story in the Sunday New York Times Magazine, 8/3/03; and, Out Magazine, October 2003. There’s some really rockin, shockin, dick-swingin work in the show…as you might imagine.

NOTHIN’ BEATS PUSSY

The Club
Actor/performance artist John Fleck will perform the New York debut of his newest, frantic song and dance spectacle, NOTHIN’ BEATS PUSSY, in The Club at La MaMa October 2 to 19. Fleck portrays his butch ex-army father, his glamour-hungry mother, a talking fist named Pussy and an entire cast of characters in this one man cabaret where, according to Fleck, “blond ambition and upward mobility rear their ugly heads.”
Developed and workshopped at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the
Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and the Evidence Room in Los Angeles over the past year, NOTHIN’ BEATS PUSSY takes its title from a conversation Fleck had with his father about being gay. After discovering an adolescent Fleck dressed in his mother’s nightgown and wearing one of her blonde wigs, his father’s only words of advice or encouragement to his son after demanding to know if he was a fruit were simply, NOTHIN’ BEATS PUSSY.
Fleck’s shocking new show explores pussy as a metaphor for the clichéd American dream his parents hopelessly groped for in suburban Middle America with their cocktails and blond beehive coifs via the bargain basement. “Everyone wants pussy,” Fleck explains with his lipstick besmeared Señor Wences-style puppet. “And everyone wants blonde pussy.”
Fleck will be appearing in a new “supernatural drama” on HBO, “Carnivále,” that debuts September 14. His character, Gecko the snake man, is part of an ensemble of freak show spectacles in a Depression-era carnival. Kyong Park is the founder/director of the International Center for Urban Ecology [1998-present], a nomadic laboratory for future cities, based in Detroit and New York. He was the founder/director of StoreFront for Art and Architecture (1982-98), an experimental forum and exhibition space in New York.
He is also a curator for the Detroit section of “Shrinking Cities”, a project that will examine the phenomena of depopulation in four developed cities around the world -Liverpool/Manchester [UK], Halle/Leipzig [Germany], Ivanovo [Russia] and Detroit. http://www.shrinkingcities.com/
At this lecture he will talk about 3 projects on Detroit: ‘24620: The Fugitive House’, an empty house from Detroit that has been reconstructed in seven cities in Europe so far and will be on show this autumn in Sheffield; ‘Words, Images and Spaces’, a language for a new city; and ‘Detroit: Making It Better For You’, a fictional video about a conspiracy to destroy a city. He will also present THE SLIDE,’ a design and simulation to build a
transparent tube that people can ride through an 18 story empty hi-rise building in Halle Neustadt, Germany.

Join us for an informal conversation with William Forsythe, Artistic Director of Ballett Frankfurt, for a rare public appearance and multimedia presentation. The award-winning choreographer will discusses his vision for furthering artistic practice in an increasingly conservative political and economic environment and the role of cultural institutions in civic life. He will talk about TAT, the 30-year old, world-renowned experimental performance venue he now directs at the converted tramway of the Bockenheimer Depot, where he seeks to foster “social choreographies”-new ways for people to come into active contact with the arts in their daily lives.
