Veteran cyber punk space cadet and founder of international Neoism Istvan Kantor AKA Monty Cantsin from Toronto, lets rip in Cardiff on the first date of his European tour.
Utilising filing cabinets with live action, sound and video MACHINERY explores the socio-mechanical bodykinetics of communication systems and their relationships to individual and collective “body-machines” extended with new technology.The File Cabinet Project represents Kantor’s observations concerning information systems in technological society. The artists interest in the file cabinet is not a simple physical fascination or aesthetic obsession with an object but rather a wider theoretical involvement with semi-robotic sculptural systems and kinesonic information mechanisms. The simple monolithic file cabinets are single bodies of a technological system linked together by computers and integrated into a giant network that functions as a world wide information reproduction machinery. The body as a transmission device, orgasmic contractions as kinetic control system, epileptic seizure of the body as information machinery. Hi. I am showing two monologues from FAMILY ESTABLISHMENT, the new play I’m writing, this Friday October 4 at Dixon Place. After this, I’m going back to the woodshed to write, write, and rewrite – the final version will show itself slowly next winter and spring. (if you’ve been to any of the previous shows this summer/fall, you’ve seen at least part of this. Of course we’d love to see you again).
FAMILY ESTABLISHMENT is a series of stories about the disappearing history of neighborhoods, storytelling among strangers, and a dusty notebook recovered from an abandoned rooming house. Location One is pleased to announce the second talk of our series Performance Contemporary: a conversation with Paul Kaiser conducted by Bonnie Marranca. Paul Kaiser is a digital artist whose work has been exhibited in performance spaces such as Lincoln Center and Barbicon and in museums and galleries, such as the Whitney, Pompidou Center and Eyebeam. His work began in experimental film and audiotape; he also studied the storytelling practices of the Tarahumara and Navajo Indians. Kaiser spent ten years in Washington D.C. teaching students with severe learning disabilities. He began developing computer programs that allowed these children to build multimedia depictions of their own minds. In 1994, Kaiser relocated to New York and founded Riverbed, a multimedia studio, in order to create cultural and art-oriented interactive projects. Kaiser created the virtual dances Hand-Drawn Spaces and BIPED, with Merce Cunningham and Shelley Eshkar, and Ghostcatching, with Bill T. Jones. Kaiser’s piece Trace (2001), a multimedia narrative installation with audio design by Bell Labs scientist Nicholas Tsingos, was seen at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of the Arts in Multimedia program. His most recent public art work, Pedestrian, a project produced by the Art Production Fund and Eyebeam, was installed at three Manhattan sites including Rockefeller Center, The Studio Museum in Harlem, and Eyebeam in Chelsea. He has received many awards, including ComputerWorld/Smithsonian Award in 1991, a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1996, and a Bessie award in 2000.
“The Wooster Group-A Dictionary of Ideas” Tuesday, November 19th 7PM Location One is please to present a slide-lecture by Bonnie Marranca on one of the most influential American theatre companies. The Wooster Group is an ensemble of artists who collaborate on the development and production of theater and media pieces. Since the early 1970’s, The Wooster Group has played a pivotal role in bringing technically sophisticated and evocative uses of sound, film, and video into the realm of contemporary theater. The Wooster Group’s members are Jim Clayburgh, Willem Dafoe, Spalding Gray, Elizabeth LeCompte, Peyton Smith, Kate Valk, and Ron Vawter. Under the direction of LeCompte and with its associates and staff, the Group has created and performed all of its theater pieces at their home base, The Performing Garage, in the Soho district of New York City. The Group’s repertory has toured widely in the US and Europe, as well as to Asia, Australia, Canada, and South America. Note: Wooster Group member Ron Vawter died April 16, 1994. The Wooster Group has received numerous awards, including National Endowment, State Arts Council, and the City Department of Cultural Affairs grants. In 1991, the Group was awarded a Village Voice Obie, recognizing 15 years of sustained excellence. That same year, Director Elizabeth LeCompte received an NEA Distinguished Artists Fellowship for Lifetime Achievement in American Theater. In 1995, Ms. LeCompte received the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, recognizing outstanding creative achievement in her work with The Wooster Group.
Dialogue with Richard Maxwell

Richard Maxwell is one of the most talked about new playwrights in the downtown scene whose work has also been produced increasingly around the country and in Europe. His recent play Joe was produced at PS 122. Other works include House, Boxing 2000, Drummer Wanted, and Caveman. Maxwell worked with Steppenwolf in Chicago where he was co-founder and director of the Cook County Theatre Department. He is now Artistic Director of New York City Players.
Bonnie Marranca is co-founder and editor of PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art. A theatre critic residing in New York City, she has written two volumes of essays, Ecologies of Theatre, and Theatrewritings, which won the George Jean Nathan Award in Dramatic Criticism, and has edited several books, including Conversations on Art and Performance, Plays for the End of the Century, and Interculturalism and Performance. Bonnie Marranca is a Guggenheim Fellow and Fulbright scholar and is currently teaching at Princeton University. She is Director of Special Performance Projects at Location One.

Susana Cook
Born in Argentina, Susana Cook is a New York based performance artist who has been writing and producing original work for over 14 years.. Her work takes on interwoven themes of segregation, based on class, race, nationalism and homophobia with an ensemble involving mainly women and transgender people of color. She performed and taught workshops at Columbia University, Oberlin College, Yale University, in San Juan Puerto Rico, and at The Bronx Museum of The Arts. Her most recent productions are Hamletango, prince of Butches, The Fraud, Gross National Product, Conga Guerrilla Forest, Hot Tamale, Rats…the fantasy of extermination, and Butch Fashion Show in the Femme Auto Body Shop.

datamap_2001.02 is a multimedia installation that records the movements and activities of artist/activist Jim Costanzo over the past two years. Photographs, video and data collected from bank and credit card transactions are used in conjunction with readings from Global Position System, video footage and photographs to map the artist’s activism and movements around the world.
In the mid 1990’s Jim Costanzo’s apartment building installed surveillance cameras, which meant that he could not enter or exit his residence without leaving electronic footprints. The following year he documented a trip through New England and Upstate New York by taking simulated surveillance photos whenever he used a bank or credit card. This work, titled “Transaction Profile” was published in New Observations #122, in the 1999 Summer Issue. As Costanzo traveled abroad, he expanded his surveillance strategy to include the use of GPS and video to track and document his movements with the intention to draw attention to the surreptitious data generated by the mundane activities of those fortunate enough to be plugged into the global economy.
Reacting to the 2000 presidential election, Costanzo changed his strategy and expanded his scope further to include images from the news industry and popular culture. Reacting to the arbitrary conclusion and the dubious activities that followed the election, he set out to record his activities during the presidential election. Along with documenting his usual consumer activities he organized a demonstration in New York City and then went to Washington, DC to protest the election results at the inauguration. In DC he also recorded additional footage of the actions of the other demonstrators and shifted the focus of the datamap from the consumer profile to government surveillance.
During and after the events of 9/11 and the resulting “war on terrorism” he documented the events unfolding on the streets and around the world via his TV screen and by downloading images from the FBI’s website. Costanzo continued to participate in and document the demonstrations of artists/activists who staged the peace vigil “Our Grief Is Not A Cry For War”, and the demonstrations at the World Economic Forum meeting in New York City. After 9/11 the work became even more resonant by drawing attention to the way this information can be used as evidence in court. datamap_2001.02, a 48 X 80 inch photo montage with over 200 images and a three?channel video, will be shown along with small prints of the more lyrical data that gets trapped in the subconscious. These soft-focus low-resolution enlargements of images taken from TV screens reflect the infiltration of media images into our collective memories.
Costanzo is a co-founding member of REPOhistory, an artist collective that created site-specific public artworks that dealt with issues of class, race, gender and sexuality. He was the creative director of their website www.repohistory.org and he coordinated the transfer of the REPOhistory archives to NewYork University’s Downtown Collection located in the Fales Library. He teaches at Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design and the International Center of Photography.

The two new pieces that she will be showing in the exhibition are works from her Feng Shui series. She applies the Feng Shui solution of sound to these works to energize the spaces around them. The sound of the two pieces Sound Coat and Think Tank, are triggered by the viewer when they are within proximity of the work. Sound Coat emits the sound of sonar from a pocket and from Think Tank are the words, think tank, spoken over and over again until they are scrambled. The form of Think Tank is an old electrical box.

“In the summer of 1998, on a research trip to Tijuana, Mexico, I met Delfina Rodriguez, a maquiladora worker who had been accused by her employer of trying to start a union in the plant. To coerce her into resigning, her manager had locked her in a room without food, water, bathroom or phone for twelve hours. She had signed a letter of resignation under duress and then, once she was released, she sued her former employer for violation of her civil rights. Her boss told the judge that she was insane, that nothing had happened and that she had no proof. Her coworkers were afraid to testify on her behalf. I was convinced that there must have been surveillance cameras recording what happened to her during her internment. Dolores from 10 to 10 is my interpretation of what the cameras saw.”

The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council has organized a juried exhibition of 23 site-specific installations and performances to be on view from October 2, 2002 through January 31, 2003. World-Wide Group, a real estate investment, development and management firm, has temporarily donated the commercial ground-floor space of the newly renovated luxury rental building, 50 Murray. The storefront works will be displayed along the block of 50 Murray Street, Church Street, Park Place and West Broadway. In addition to enlivening a full city block, the five-month public-art project seeks to engage the larger community of small businesses, area residents, commuter workers, and tourists. Looking In consists of rotating installations that incorporate abstract painting, surveillance cameras, architectural models, optical illusions, hydraulics, and kiddie rides. The spontaneity of this interactive visual cityscape invites passers-by to explore the streets beyond ground zero and to rediscover Lower Manhattan’s many cultural amenities.
