mech[a] and OUTPUT is a new dance and mixed media project by koosil-ja in collaboration with Benton-C Bainbridge (live video), Geoff Matters (music), and Liminal Projects, Omar Khan & Laura Garófalo (environmental design). The project explores the relationship between resistance and creativity. mech[a] is a dance of restraint, based on koosil-ja’s study of the dances of the Noh-play DOJOJI. Through rigid adherence to the original choreography of DOJOJI, she treats the form itself as the subject, rather than as a medium. Simultaneously, the group transposes the work into their own aesthetic context. In contrast, OUTPUT is a dance of expression as koosil-ja responds to and interprets over 100 video clips she has sequenced, selected from different movies thematically related to the story of DOJOJI. Her collaborators play the sequenced footage from a video pendulum set in the center of the stage, 20 ft by 20 ft in a 3,000 sq. ft. raw space, and seats the audience around. In the end, the two approaches merge as the struggles between female anger and righteousness, between physical restraint and emotional expression. Developing both pieces together over a long period in her own space élan, koosil-ja seeks a way of creating and presenting work that is congenial to its mixed media nature, in the process revisiting the premises of theater and refining it to its essence.

January 2004 will see the launch of UpStage: a web-based venue for live performance: http://www.upstage.org.nz
UpStage has been created by the globally-dispersed cyberformance troupe Avatar Body Collision and programmer Douglas Bagnall. It aims to provide a web-based venue and tool for artists to compile digital media into live theatrical events in real time, for an online audience.
UpStage is available free to artists, students, teachers, researchers, schools, and anyone interested in exploring live performance on the internet.
The development of UpStage was funded by the Smash Palace Collaboration Fund, a joint initiative of Creative New Zealand and the NZ Ministry for Research, Science and Technology, and undertaken with project management support from MediaLab South Pacific. The launch kicks off at 6pm New Zealand time on 9 January 2004, with the official bit and online demo happening from 6.30pm. After their beautiful and fabulous performance entitled ORANGES AND LEMONS (inspired by a children’s song about London Bells), at Umspannswerk in Kreuzberg, which was part of the opening of CHANGING CHANNELS in Berlin, David Medalla, FF Alumn, and Adam Nankervis will perform seven impromptus and participatory performances which will take place in different locations all over Berlin, from the nymphs fountain in Kreuzberg to the Hunting Lodge of the Hohenzollerns in the Grunewald Forest.The impromptus and performances are dedicated to the memory of Shoe Taylor Guinness, artist, dancer and singer extraordinaire.

New Year. New President? Mandatory! I see how the 41% of the electorate that is Evangelical, (i.e., the “Christian Right” which is neither, as a famous bumper sticker had it), aren’t sending their money to Falwell, Dobson, etc., anymore, SINCE THEY BELIEVE THAT GOD PUT GW BUSH IN THE WHITE HOUSE AND SO THEY’VE WON!!! Yo! This Bulloney was settled 200 years ago. CHURCH is your business. STATE is all of ours. They are not in the same family. I’ll be working up the slapstick side of this tragic American trend in these shows that were set up by my agency for producer/presenter types to peruse the talent.
However, to do what I normally do while levitating ideas while in front of judges only is not that groovy so it would be very lovely if you came too. Also, there’s only a few of the talent brokers, and this club is bigger than that. I like the Bowery Poetry Club – it feels like the Wah-Wah Hut and all those E. The anti-consumerist Church of Stop Shopping kicks off the election year with a funeral for fear. Reverend Billy confronts the sentimental patriotism of the Bush thugs and reclaims Ground Zero as a locus of peace and possibility. The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir, 25 voices strong, joyously celebrates the victory. Reverend Billy is the creation of Obie award winner artist Bill Talen. The Church of Stop Shopping is an interactive play directed by Savitri Durkee, musical director Benny key, conductor James Solomon Benn. Reverend Billy and The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir were invited performers at The Burning Man Festival and can be seen regularly at their home stage in New York, St Mark’s Church.
This show is the first installment in a national tour that will include the New Hampshire Primary, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Oregon, and California, and international appearances in Berlin, London, and Barcelona. Bill Talen’s book What Should I do if Reverend Billy is in My Store was recently published by The New Press. Reverend Billy and The Church of Stop Shopping have been the subject of numerous American and European documentaries. Tomato Records will release a CD of their work in Spring, 2004.

White Box is pleased to announce the exhibition, Dennis Oppenheim: Armatures for Projection, the Early Factory Projects. The exhibition consists of works on paper, photographs, video, and a sculpture all made between the early 1970s and the mid 1980s. The works on paper are the formal and conceptual precursors to sculptures and installations that Oppenheim collectively called “the early factory projects.” Re-contextualized in the exhibition as formally independent from his three-dimensional works, the works on paper exemplify Oppenheim¹s mastery of line that is fluid and biomorphic as it is hard-edge and geometric, and that simultaneously evinces organic and synthetic qualities.
The “early factory projects” sculptures can be generally characterized as mechanical and dynamic and are highly diverse in material and composition. Varied in formal structure, these early pivotal works by Oppenheim extend in myriad directions the psycho-mechanistic elements of Duchamp¹s Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even. The sculpture on view in the exhibition will be Object with a Memory (1983), which thanks to the Munson-William-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, will be on view for the first time in thirty years at White Box.
The photographs in the exhibition are from a series of earthworks and process-oriented installation pieces from the early 1970s that involve the use of flares. The flares were placed to make up words that were then ignited on the landscape. While an aspect of earthwork concerned the circumvention of the museum and gallery via site-specific work made outside the traditional exhibition space, Oppenheim¹s flare pieces looked ahead to other forms of site-specificity where the social context of a given space became crucial for the work’s realization. One work, for example, spelled the word “poison” and refers both to environmental pollution as well as the sulfur that emitted from the flare. Oppenheim’s pyrotechnical earthworks from the early 1970s have been very influential and this form of ephemeral sculpture/installation has most recently been seen in the work of Cai Guo-Qiang. Rounding out the exhibition will be the video Machine Gun (1974), a piece that involves the use of an automatic weapon.

Hi All!
I look forward to seeing some of you in NYC at APAP (Assoc. of Performing Arts Presenters) Conference this upcoming weekend and early next week. I’m very honored to be be receiving the APAP Sydney Yates Award for Arts Advocacy at the Monday Awards Ceremony!! I’m also buzzed to be opining/ranting/shouting-out as the Closing Plenary speaker on Tuesday.
As the new year starts, my Aussie partner Alistair and I keep hoping for a day in America when lesbian and gay couples are finally respected under law. We are hanging on by our fingernails here in the US for the present. Alistair has a few months left on work visa to teach creative writing at Antioch University in LA as well as the Santa Barbara campus. Any day we could get “a rejection of his extension” – nice sentiment – and have to leave the US immediately. We’re hopeful about Massachusetts civil marriage for gay folks ruling, but even if that goes through it could be years before that helps in terms of US immigration. Keeping our fingers crossed. 2003 was a wild ride with some good news from the Supreme Court, Canada Marriage Equality and THANK GOD for Massachusetts.

From January 9-11, 2003, PARTICIPANT INC will present biCHANCE, an installation and performance by CHRYSANNE STATHACOS. Stathacos will construct a large-scale rose mandala on the floor of the gallery, plucking roses apart petal by petal, and inviting the audience to participate in this process. The mandala will fill the gallery space by the third day.
The mandala will exist completed for one day. During the final performance on Sunday, January 11, the petals will be swept off the gallery floor, making a rose waterfall and landing on the floor below. At this time, Stathacos will read from her book, 1000+wishes (a compilation of anonymous wishes from The Wish Machine Project) comprised of written and spoken wishes collected from around the world via travel, Internet, fax, and mail. These accumulated wishes link common desires, pain, joy, and hopes in a poetic rant that accents similarities more than differences.
biCHANCE is the third installation/performance of a seven part Rose Mandala series, reflecting the process of time, birth, desire, death, and emptiness that will culminate in a video work, The Roses. The final mandala will be made in Jaipur, India (January 2005) in connection with Nature Morte, New Delhi. The second mandala is currently on view in The Invisible Thread (part of The Buddhism Project) at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, NY.
