Jacki Apple, FF Alumn, at Center for Contemporary Art, New Orleans, LA. Jan 10- March 21 Jacki Apple’s installation Aviary of the Lost1994/2004, number 4 from The Culture of Disappearance series, is currently featured in the exhibition Birdspace: A Post-Audubon Aviary, curated by David Rubin. The exhibition contains diverse works in various media by fifty artists working with bird imagery. Apple’s installation is about extinction of bird species in the19th and 20th centuries, and the conditions of extermination by physical force and economic exploitation — i.e. conquest vs. cohabitation, consumption without regeneration. A species becomes extinct when its mortality is continually greater than its recruitment. Knee deep in feathers, the viewer moves down a A 20 foot long, 4 foot wide, 10 foot high “tunnel” with a dropped ceiling at 7 feet filled with nesting, the sound of wings beating and voices singing the names of the dead. The earthen colored walls are covered with the handwritten names of 215 extinct birds and stories of their demise. Video Wall: Sara Meltzer Gallery is proud to present Barbara Pollack’s AIM. In this 3-channel video, four teenagers converse via AOL Instant Messenger. The monitors show the faces of the four participants-two boys and two girls-as they react and respond to this digital conversation. This video stems from an off-handed remark, “We don’t flirt at school, we wait until we get home and then IM each other,” made by the son of the artist. In order to capture the humor, spontaneity and frankness of these conversations about sex and dating, Pollack used micro-cameras, a type of surveillance equipment now readily available and frequently used by parents to keep an eye on their children. The work demonstrates the impenetrability of the adolescent experience, even in this era when all forms of privacy seem to have been eliminated. Dear friends and colleagues, is you have a spare moment please take a look at Oscar´s new website. It has performance scripts of our currently touring collaborative shows, The Quiet Bastard – Director´S Cut, Urban Minefields, Notes And Noise. It also has some of his published work, such as Fishing In The Fast Lane & When Is A Duck Not A Duck, and has the synopsis and sample chapters of The Quiet Bastard, his novel which is soon to be published in Spanish by Pepitas de Calabaza. The website was designed by Noelia Ruiz (based in Dublin, originally from Barcelona), who I think has made a fantastic job of it. Denise Bibro Fine Art is pleased to present Beyond the Fence, a video installation by Carol Jacobsen, from February 5 to March 6, 2004. The installation is co-sponsored by Amnesty International USA in connection with its worldwide campaign against human rights abuses in U.S. women’s prisons.
Beyond the Fence intercuts a conversation between three former inmates who were prisoner rights activists together inside Michigan women’s prisons with footage shot inside the prisons. Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the U.S. Justice Department all cited Michigan’s as among the worst women’s prisons in the nation because of lack of medical care, sexual assault by guards and other human rights violations.
Carol Jacobsen is an award winning video artist whose first person documentaries on the criminalization and censorship of women have been exhibited and screened throughout the U.S. and abroad. In addition to Amnesty, her work has been sponsored by Human Rights Watch, the American Civil Liberties Union, Puffin Foundation and many other organizations. Her writings on feminism, art, censorship and criminalization have appeared in Art in America, Exposure, Social Text, Heresies, The New York Law Review, and other publications. She serves as Coordinator of the Michigan Women’s Clemency Project, working to free women wrongly convicted. She is an Associate Professor of Art at the University of Michigan, and is represented by Denise Bibro Fine Art.

10. Lynn Book, FF Alumn, calls for participants in performance art chorus, and more.
January 24 (latest to join, January 31st)
CALL for participants in VOX RISK HOLLER, a performance art chorus founded by Lynn Book in 2002. No particular expertise required, but a willingness to explore the outer reaches of voice (singing, sounding and beyond) and performance activities that defy genres and blur borders. This is an experiment in ‘noise community’ and will be developing new material by Book (with input from participants) for performance on February 22 at the Bowery Poetry Club. Rehearsal/work sessions are Saturdays from Jan. 24th through Feb. 21st. CALL Voicelab at 212-529-8991.
February 4
Voicelab 1, the foundation workshop that runs for 6 weeks on Wednesdays, beginning Feb 4. An uncommon approach developed by Lynn Book, founder of Voicelab and on faculty at Sarah Lawrence College and the Kitchen Summer Institute. This work opens up the voice through release and engagement of the ‘voiced body’. Exploration of key concepts week to week to build a foundation, to revive a connection to voice or simply extend or complement other practices. Labs meet on E. 14th St. from 7 – 8:30 pm; come on the first night to check it out with no obligation. Class fee: $185.
February 5
The LOOP group, a creative projects lab for the development of innovative vocal performances to be produced by Voicelab in association with Dixon Place in May 2004, has one more opening for an artist participant. This is an interdisciplinary lab with a focus not only on making performance and new media work that features voice, but that also involves developing new strategies and processes within a unique feedback forum. Two phases: development – alternate Thursdays in Feb/Mar and production for 6 consecutive Saturdays in Apr/May. Don’t miss this once a year opportunity, call now for an interview, 212-529-8991.

Reception and Artist Context talk with “Voices From OUT There” artists Mia Hsieh (Taiwan) and Margarida Mestre (Portugal). Fantastic opportunity to get an inside view on the development of the artists work in their respective countries/communities and to initiate a dialogue and potential exchange with them. Find out about the process and orientation for the artists and their work that will be presented at “Voices From OUT There”, February 22 (see below info) and what artists in other areas of the world are currently doing. The International Re-Rooters Society (IRS) was founded by Jay Critchley in 1983 to reconnect, “re-root” ourselves to the earth. The annual ceremony is held each year on January 7, the day after The Epiphany and the Twelve Days of Christmas. A discarded Christmas tree/boat is burned in Provincetown Harbor at sunset.

Ricardo Miranda Zuñiga, FF Alumn will be presenting recent work at this month’s Uprgrade. The Upgrade is a monthly gathering of new media artists and curators in New York City organized by artist Yael Kanarek and hosted by Eyebeam. The talk is Thursday, January 29th, 7:30pm at Eyebeam, 540 West 21st Street.
From ice-cream cart to grocery cart to ATM, Ricardo Miranda Zuñiga transforms elements of urban life into vehicles for interaction and discussion. Melding new media, sculpture, public display and performance, Ricardo likes to investigate current and historical issues by framing his research into works that mediate public interaction and discussion. At this month’s upgrade, Ricardo will discuss Vagamundo, NEXUM ATM, the Public Broadcast Cart as well as works in progress. Ricardo’s work can currently be seen at Exit Art, and the American Museum of the Moving Image. His work has been recently shown at the Whitney Museum’s artport, the Bronx Museum, DAÏMÕN Media Center, Quebec, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Yucatan and the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. He is currently developing a new project for the New Museum’s “Counter Culture” exhibition that opens July 2004.

The show includes John Parker, Nina Sobell, Caspar Stracke, LoVid, Michaeal Jacobson with performances by Bubblyfish, Bit Shifter, North Guinea Hills, G-Stompz + Nobody, Tom Ritchford, and Jenghizkhan.
“a sound show” includes work from a variety of artists using sound as the basis or influence for their work. The work included in the show uses toys, tools, and consumer electronics that are either customized or used in a non-traditional manner.
Nina Sobell uses a hammer to create a percussive rhythm on pieces of glass in a video performance excerpt from 1973. Nina Sobell is a multidisciplinary artist living in New York. She has worked and exhibited internationally. She is a sculptor and performance artist working with media in time based work. www.parkbench.org contains the first archived streaming performances on the web and one of the earliest telerobotic installations and her current ongoing exploration of Brainwave
